My local Walmart left a 36 inch black stone in rain and it oxidized as result. I was able to haggle them to 50% off.$120 for a brand new griddle with some rust on the griddle top. This video helped me tremendously make it look new again. Thank you!!!
Nice! Yeah, people fret out about the tops rusting. Just some wire brushes or a paint/rust remover on a angle grinder, and it's good as new! Like a bad hair cut.
Glad to see the term “jack leg” being used. I coined that phrase myself back in the 90’s. Of course I’m telling the truth. Out of that whole video why would I comment on this guy calling himself a jack leg? I too am a jack leg as I did this same thing to our griddle or whatever it’s called. Completely covered in rust. Been through two batteries on the cordless for about 2 hours. Almost done. Such a pain in the ass. I’ll get it later won’t be uttered out of my mouth when it comes to this grill again. F that. Lesson learned.
Excellent video, I’m picking up a blackstone this week. Outside and unused 3 years. 100.00 of new 899.00. Needs this treatment and as on old construction worker wanted to do it this way but unsure. Thank you for letting me know I will be doing it the professional way. An old griddle down to bare is always best, then take care of when you own it.
good video. i have been a welder for 5+ years use an angle grinder for the large area and the wire wheel for your grease trap and sides it will cut it down to a good 25-30 min. plus you dont need to keep switching brushes
I actually re-did another one and used the angle grinder with a paint and rust wheel. Wow, worked a lot better. The brush changing was me thinking something else would work better. Playing ping-pong in my mind you know?
Good video, Hussey. That's the part that scared me when I got my 36 inch Blackstone a few months back, but I figured out a way to make things simple by taking tips from Todd Toven and a few others. My initial seasoning was three or four thin coats of cheap Canola oil, followed by a roll of sausage. After each cook, right after turning off the burners, all I do is gently scrape off any excess debris (and hit any sticky stuff with water), then wipe with a paper towel. Then I take two more paper towels and rub on a thin layer of Canola oil. THAT'S IT! I don't like cleaning either brother, but it takes maybe two minutes to do it that way. Then pop that hard cover on. I heat up on high for 10 minutes before each cook, and it sanitizes the top and starts to burn off that oil. I say keep it simple. :) Good luck with the re-season, looking forward to the video.
Chris, canola as a seasoning worked well. You could see in that's video much of the spots were hard to come off. The problem was me and I'd cook something with some acid in it and not clean it up well or none at all, and let it sit. Not good. Hope I didn't misguided folks in thinking of myself seasoning with lard as not to use canola though. I'm doing lard as really an ode to what our family did back in the day. Just to see how that goes.
Got halfway through the video, had to get up, run out back and clean my grill! Seasoned it again while I mopped the deck floor! Thanks for the reminder!
@@thehungryhussey Yep, not only did that grill need a GOOD cleaning (not the lick and a promise I sometimes give) but the natural collection of dust on the floor (being outside and all) just irritated my feet so much I had to mop the floor too!! So, got two for the price of one!
Hey man i had one then sold it and bought the new one in the Spring the big one this time. I did the same thing. The heat of summer and lots of rains too didn’t use it for about a month and rust started.
I had to do the same thing 😢. The Blackstone cover let's water sit on it like a pond and the water gets through the cover. Mine looked worse than yours. I used a wire wheel on a grinder then sanded it. That was a lot of work. Now I'm cutting a piece of wood to sit on top of the hotplate on an angle so the water doesn't pool on top of the cover.
Just made your BANG-GOOD (GREAT!) Mongolian Beef and I was so disappointed that my veggies had some black stuff in it which didn't happen to your veggies. I've only had my BS for a few weeks, so it's still working through the initial seasoning I suppose. Regardless of the black stuff, this dish was amazingly good! I kept debating on whether to sand down the BS like I do my cast iron pans and, since the solution came to me as I slept on it, I purposely searched for THIS vid on your channel. THANK YOU! This was just what I was looking for. I will tackle this job today!
I just got my griddle today... and after watching this... I PROMISE ... I will clean and oil after each use... so help me God! Lol... But.. Very instructive!! Thank you for the lesson!!! Btw.. Love the channel... you are one of the reasons I bought the griddle.
looking good. I just did mine. The bigger areas, I used a 60 grit flapper wheel on an angle grinder.... stripped it to bare metal in literally 2 minutes. The corners/tight areas i used the wire wheel on the drill. worked great.
I had the same issue with mine, but I plugged the drain hole and poured vinegar onto the flat top so there was about a 1/4 inch deep and lef tit there for about 2 days, and then wire brushed the rust and crap off...... Went way easier than what you are doing.......
I just got a blackstone recently and decided to strip and it and give it a new seasoning. I've done cast iron reseasonings since I was a kid, so I thought I could do this. This is basically how I did mine, except I just used the wire wheel. The pencil pusher comment struck home; I haven't really used my hands very much since graduating college and last night I really found out just how long it'd been lol. What I wish I'd had was an angle grinder with a bigger wheel. I used grapeseed oil, since that's what I use for cast iron, and while it didn't get black everywhere, it's got most of the surface done. Going to try cooking on it today, and the rest just takes time and some effort.
I've done this a another time and used a angle grinder with a paint and rust wheel and that zipped the stuff off much quicker. Being a pencil pusher is tough bro. Haha.
Good job cleaning it up you made the rite choice with the wire brush those square corners are a pain just food for thought next time if you don't own a 4 1/2 inch side grinder buy you one they make wire brushs to fit them and will work a lot better for stripping the surface down to bare metal i used them a great deal welding if it's really stubborn you can also use a flapper disc which is made of sanding paper you can buy different grit disc and they work on the same 4 1/2 inch grinder keep it going prayers from South Carolina.
Thanks for being so darn honest! Truth be told this will happen to most of us at one time or another. Life gets in the way of fun sometimes and now we know how to fix the problem! Thanks again!
I just did mine with an abrasive pad from harbor freight that goes on an angle grinder. Took me only 30 mins to get to look like yours. Try it next time!
I had to strip my blackstone and reseason. I used an angle grinder and wire wheel on my drill for the corners. Used an orbital sander to get it smooth. With stripping and reseason only took a couple hours total.
It’s a laborious duty but needed. Also can use a angle grinder with paint and rust wheel and that comes off a little better. I did that later on, but didn’t video it.
I really enjoyed watching you clean the ole BlackStone, you did very well and she looks beautiful! A lot of people don't understand you have to clean griddles every time you cook on them, the one at work awe cleaned every night. Thank for letting us watch and I am allll excited bout the reseasoning video!...keepem Coming Bruthah!
Goodness ... Great day!!! U wore me out. I just got a blackstone and I'm terrified of messing it up. I've been watching video after video and this is a good one! I LEARNED YOUR LESSON!! 🤣 cuz I have my " I'll clean it later" moments too. Not with this sucker I won't... No way. When u gotta buy drills and grinders just to clean something .. that little 2 minute cleanup ain't so bad after all🤣🤣🤣🤣. Love your videos love your beautiful family. Thanks a ton, especially for this vid!
Looks great. As you know prevention is the best possible way to keep rust off. The idea of using sandpaper was genius. Ensure you keep a light cost of oil on your cooktop to prevent rust in the future. Good job
I got mine not to long ago. Getting some surface rust. I have the grille that comes with a cover also have a weather proof canvass Blackstone cover. Still got some rust. I live in VA so humid and griddle is outside. Any tips to stop this? Some people said leave grill cover open a little? Also I got some of the dill grillos pickles per your recommendation. OMG. BEST ever. Thank you
I would have to agree with the other guy that said the grill bricks. Absolutely. Don’t know if he would take care of the rust but it would most certainly keep everything very very very clean. Great video brother, you just started back from Ground Zero that’s awesome as well. 👍🏼💪🏼🇺🇸
I watched this while I was drinking a Bitburger (German Beer). It was so satisfying to see you working on that Blackstone. I think it was about Time doing this. And as always - you did it very well. Now season it and start doing videos - I'm HUNGRY!! :-) ;-) :-) GBYAYF
Bro! Take it to your local paint/powder coat shop and pay them to sand blast it. Saves time! I bought a used blackstone for $25 that had tons of rust and now looks new.
That's what I was going to do brother however the time took to take it to the shop to do that and pick them back up I could have already had it sent it down myself
How did it get in that bad condition? Did u not use it for a while and left it outside? I don’t clean mine after I use it but when I do use it again, I turn on all the burners and add water to scrape off all the old stuff on it. Mine is garage kept
Many things. I wasn't doing cleaning like I once did. Then I cooked something that was very acidic and didn't clean it. Just put the cover on it and left it. Bad move.
Thanks for the reply Hussy. So after you used it, covered and left it. How long before you uncovered and saw it in this condition? Just wondering how long it takes before I need to prevent this from happening to me. Thanks
In the market for a Blackstone or a Camp Chef myself. If you clean and oil it well after EVERY use this won't happen, right? What happens during the winter when its not in use for 3-4 months (I would have it covered), will it get rusty from non-use? Thx!
It’s hard when those kids are little but soak that time with the kids up while you can. You can replace that grill. Those kids will be grown before you know it. Mine will be 19 and 20 this year. It pisses me right off to think about how much time I wasted cleaning my grill and my deck, and my car, and my barn at this point. You did do a really nice job on that grill though. I will probably do that to mine now. Godspeed.
My Blackstone was in the exact same shape as yours in this video. I followed another video and tried using a grill stone. No luck. I'm glad I came across this just now and will follow yours. Especially if it only took you 1.25 hours. I can't find you re-seasoning video though. Did you not make one?
Hope you and your family remain safe during Florence. I'm sure you're well away from the coast, but I expect you'll get quite a bit of rain. Stay safe!
Thanks for posting this. I try to clean and oil my grills after I use them, so far so good. I also cover the grill with the metal top but I also use the soft covers too ( They are in the Garage now ). The soft covers are heavy duty and seems to be of high quality. We are on Generator power now, 500,000+ without power, Flood Warnings issued for just about all of ENC........
Dang, see there always someone out there to show me up! Haha 😂 just kidding buddy. My lazy self cannot seem to clean the thing more less put saran wrap on it too.
Do you keep it dry when doing this? I just got a griddle from a friend. Two griddles, on new one old and rusted. Would like to keep both and refresh the rusted one.
Try washing next time with vinegar. It will eat the rust. If I were in your shoes, I would have laid a towel down across the entire cooking surface and drenched the towel with a 5% vinegar. Then you need to check on it every few hours and rub at the rust spots to verify that you've left it long enough. Once you're happy with the results, simply clean it with soap and water. I've soaked cast iron skillets in the past that were completely covered in rust and after 12 to 18 hours the skillets were 100 rust free. Depending on how deep the rust you have will depend on how long it takes. Additionally, on smaller items like pans, dutch ovens, or smaller griddles can be put in a self cleaning oven to strip away all the old seasoning so you can start over. Cheers and good luck!
HH you are the man. I picked up my Blackstone at my lakes dumpster site. Previous owner didn't want to put in the time to clean it and bought a new one. (The box for the new griddle was also at the trash site.) Got everything but the drip tray cup. :) That said, It does have rust spots on the surface. Looking for a way to strip the surface without all the work. Any suggestions?
To put a really smooth, non-stick surface on your Blackstone, try 2 more small steps. Use 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper with water. Once done with that, take 0000 steel wool and finish it off. You'll find it's as non-stick as any cooking surface once you've properly seasoned the top. Good video!
Thanks for the video. I had my 28" on the balcony for the winter but, some small areas of the coating were coming off in the fall (always keep a cover) and now looks like rust. Do ya think I will have to resurface the entire grill or just the areas affected? Your ideas much appreciated!
Use an angle grinder with the paint and rust wheel instead of the drill. Works way w better. I actually didn’t care for the way the seasoning was going with the lard so I stripped again and started over.
I did another one using a angle grinder with a paint and rust disc and it worked really well. I’d say strip in 15 min or less. Send me an email hungryhussey@gmail.com if you want a picture of the disc.
I just got mine and I use it down at my weekend place at the lake. How do I store it at the end of the season so I don't come back to this? Thanks in advance, Max
Ya done good brother. Go with Lard, heating the griddle to when it turns gray. Repeat. Make some groceries. PS. I'm almost afraid to look under the cover of my Blackstone 28". I'll handle what ever is there. Smart move using corded tools.
I just bought one today and that looks about as rough as yours. I'm not looking forward to going through all that But that's what I'm gonna Have to do to Make it smooth and new again.
Really, a great job at some good old fashion elbow grease, and like you admitted at the start of your video it all could have been avoided if you had just done the usual clean up after cooking. Takes a strong will to admit when you've made a mistake and then take action!
You know what works great for restoring is an orbital sander and 80-220 grit sandpaper. Works really fast. Just hand sand the corners with a flat sanding block.
subbed cuz you sound like Elvis. also, as a new blackstone owner im having a hard time gauging heat, especially with multiple things that cook at a different temp or needing to put something to the side to keep warm. i have the 4 burner version. any tips?
I felt i was going to have the same problem, so i got one of the digital readout thermometers that (what do you call them?) you hold at a distance, and it has a laser dot and everything... anyway, i've noticed differences between one burner and the next. I have the three burner grill with the deep fryer attachment. This helps me figure out which is most likely to have higher heat than the others. for mine, the middle produces the most heat. Not sure if it's because the other two have end heat releases or whether they all contribute to the middle, or both.
I don't know how I missed this video, but oh well. I will have to find the seasoning video. Looks like you did a good job. If you ever have to do this again, I might suggest you try a sand-blaster. They would be great on a job like this. Probably be able to do a job like this in minutes. I bet you could find one at Harbor Freight. There are different styles and sizes. :)
Well, I actually didn't like the way lard went, so I zipped it off too, but used an angle grinder with a paint and rust striper wheel. It did far better than the drill.
I use a grill & cleaner from sams club in the kitchen i work in. I get there in the morning when the grill is cool and let that soak for a good 30 min then i use a paint scraper and it just takes everything off with ease
Hey thanks for the tip my friend. You're probably working on a surface that is just stainless steel and a thick piece of that not a seasoned piece of cold rolled steel. On a Blackstone you want to season it and not seasoning every time.
With the drill, not long, I'd say 30-40 mins. Now, I did another one, with angle grinder with paint and rust disk and it whizzed it off in 10 min or less!
Whew! Looked as tiring as you did after finishing. Now that it’s cleaned, be sure to cover it tightly. You’ve got a lot of rain coming your way compliments of Florence. Prayers for you and your family to stay safe. 🙏🏻
Hussy in your opinion do you think your cooking surface was even better now after resurfacing it than when it was new? PS it was really cool to see you and Todd Toven at your place 👍👍
Thanks HH for this excellent informative video, much appreciated bro. Mason would be proud of his cool papa. Have a nice day my friend in the Great State of North Carolina : )
Carbon grill bricks are a much better way to clean it. Or buy some good strong decreased and get the grill super hot and pour it on and scrub with a steel wool
Another great video myvfriend🙏 I have a question maybe you could give me some advice on? My Blackstone is new, however when I clean and scrape it I’m putting some scratches in it. Is this something I should be concerned with? I’m trying not to push too hard on the scraper. Anyway, I thank you in advance for any help or suggestions you could think of. Thanks again🙏🙏
I've been dreading having to do this with mine too. I cleaned it every time, but left it for a month after cooking/cleaning it. Now it bloomed like crazy and I am not looking forward to the strip and re-season process.

I did, but honestly I didn’t like the lard seasoning, so I stripped again and went with canola.
Hope you and your family remain safe during Florence. I'm sure you're well away from the coast, but I expect you'll get quite a bit of rain. Stay safe!
Brian, thanks for the kind thoughts. We're doing well so far. A lot of rain and some wind gusts for the most part.
Dang pal! Hope all is well. Let me know your status.
We're all good still. Power is good and no trees down.
Be safe buddy. Prayers sent your way.
Did you wash it with soap and water before seasoning it❓️
Been so long, I'm not real sure.
I keep mine covered in Saran Wrap after every cook..it works very well.i never have a rust issue .
Dang, see there always someone out there to show me up! Haha 😂 just kidding buddy.
My lazy self cannot seem to clean the thing more less put saran wrap on it too.
Just buy the powdercoated cover, no?
Needing to do the same to mine. I will probably wait until I see your seasoning video so I can do it all in 1day.
Good video
Seasoning video will drop soon my friend!
You're the man!
Just gotten mine from the box, thanks for looking out , Blackstone's can be refurbished !
Looked hard work but you did just great. Well done from sunny England.
Was hard work but worth it in the end for sure! Hey thanks for watching all the way from England! That's awesome! Some day I'd like to visit.
Great video brother! BLACKSTONERS!
Thanks Jason!
Interesting take. May try that next time.
so the entire thing was rusted the black areas too or just the red area ?
Just the red areas.
Love the beats!!! Good workin tunes!!
Pencil Pusher eh? Would've never thought. Great video. If mine ever gets bad I'll use this as a reference.
Haha... I look like a farmer?
The bottom of my griddle is really rusted. Should I take care of this rust or just leave it? How do I clean the bottom???
Hi Paula! I just leave mine as is.
@@thehungryhussey won’t it eventually rust through or no?
Time well spent! It looks great.
I live in SW Florida. I will be oiling mine as soon as it’s cooled, and putting in inside a tied off plastic bag. Rust is horrible here
Bet it is!
That looks awesome Hussey this is the video I've been waiting for can't wait to see how you reseason it Thanks Bud
My god that looks like a job. Glad I went with the 17 inch.
I learned a lot from then. Using a angle grinder and a rust wheel helps and does better.
Use an angle grinder with a paint and rust pad on it. Takes it off in 15 min or less.
You now have the Chrome addition !!! 😂😂
😂 Yes sir! I took it to the bare metal my friend!
That was oddly satisfying to watch... LOL! Good stuff brother!
Well humm.... Thanks brotha!
Good video!
I have a Blackstone brand new, so should i use this smoothing ,method before or after seasoning it???
@@sonofthunder1983 I wouldn't. Just season really well.
@@VanBoy OK thanks
My buddy got his sandblasted. It'll cost you a few bucks but it turned out really nice
Yeah, that's an option too.
I have the two wire bits using a battery powered Dewalt. I can get it to come out as silver. Any advice? Thanks
Not sure I follow. You mean you cannot get it to come out as silver? I'd say it's okay.
Thanks for the video. I had my 28" on the balcony for the winter but, some small areas of the coating were coming off in the fall (always keep a cover) and now looks like rust. Do ya think I will have to resurface the entire grill or just the areas affected? Your ideas much appreciated!
You could spot treat first to see if that works. If not, you can do a full restore.
Matt, can you use the burners independently of each other? Thx Traci
Yep. I cycle them all the time.
Matt thank you so much for getting back me. It would be so great if you could do a short video on the burners thanks so much your friends from Florida
That griddle is looking great again and I hope you decide to keep it that way and not let it get that bad again.
Sidney, I'm going to try my best. We shall see! Guess now I know what to do! 😂
Good video. I seem to have this problem now. Good fix!
Use an angle grinder with the paint and rust wheel instead of the drill. Works way w better.
I actually didn’t care for the way the seasoning was going with the lard so I stripped again and started over.
That will be a Mobile Business soon, I would charge 100 bucks to clean it like you did Huss dirty job that takes commitment Great work bro
I can see some folks wanting that service done for sure!
Hungry Hussey Mobile Blackstone Cleaning!
Definitely a good ideal for side money, but $100? You do know you could buy a brand new top for $100 right? Maybe $50 tops
Good job on restoring the Blackstone! Looking forward to more video's, maybe on re-seasoning the griddle.
Yep, I have that one dropping next brother!
I used a grill brick on my Blackstone. Didn't work very well. Now I'm trying it this way.
I did another one using a angle grinder with a paint and rust disc and it worked really well. I’d say strip in 15 min or less. Send me an email hungryhussey@gmail.com if you want a picture of the disc.
Do you think oven cleaner would have worked on the old seasoned areas?
I'm not sure I'd want that on something I put food on to eat.
The Hungry Hussey I agree!🙌🏻
I misspoke, I should have said Grill and BBQ cleaner.
I just got mine and I use it down at my weekend place at the lake. How do I store it at the end of the season so I don't come back to this? Thanks in advance, Max
You'll want to make sure you clean and oil the heck out of it. You'll want a hard cover over it to avoid any moisture on it.
The Hungry Hussey hard cover on order. Thank you
Take the top off at the end of the season, oil it, & store it in the house on a towel.
P Webb a year later, I figured it out.. thanks
That was definitely a job and a half lol I don't know why I was squinting every time I seen the dust fly lol.
Great job will tune in tomorrow 😁
Thanks Renate! Hopefully I'll have the seasoning video up soon. Not sure if it'll happen tomorrow or not. Haha.
Good video Brother I just got mine up and running today
Nice brother! You’ll be cooking up some good groceries soon!
Ya done good brother. Go with Lard, heating the griddle to when it turns gray. Repeat. Make some groceries. PS. I'm almost afraid to look under the cover of my Blackstone 28". I'll handle what ever is there. Smart move using corded tools.
I've seasoned already with the lard. Hopefully it took well. Have that video dropping soon!
I know it’s an older video but thanks for sharing! I need to do mine sadly
Yeah man, I let it get way nasty
Thanx for the video. I’ve been wanting to get one. I’ll be leaving mine in the weather too! Good video! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
You're welcome pal! Main objective is clean and oil it well after each use.
Yes, grill bricks made of porous stone....works like a charm, apply oil an scrub then just wipe clean.
It takes the seasoning off though?
I just bought one today and that looks about as rough as yours. I'm not looking forward to going through all that But that's what I'm gonna Have to do to Make it smooth and new again.
Get and stay disciplined Hussy. Gratz on the new boy! My first son is on the way after 3 girls! Stick with it brother!
Hey thanks my friend for the great comment! I pray all goes well with your new addition on the way.
Really, a great job at some good old fashion elbow grease, and like you admitted at the start of your video it all could have been avoided if you had just done the usual clean up after cooking. Takes a strong will to admit when you've made a mistake and then take action!
Absolutely. Just gotta roll the sleeves up and get to it! Thanks for the kind words my friend!
Nice work man. Looks good.
How much time did it take start to finish for the grinding/sanding?
With the drill, not long, I'd say 30-40 mins. Now, I did another one, with angle grinder with paint and rust disk and it whizzed it off in 10 min or less!
Whew! Looked as tiring as you did after finishing. Now that it’s cleaned, be sure to cover it tightly. You’ve got a lot of rain coming your way compliments of Florence. Prayers for you and your family to stay safe. 🙏🏻
Yes sir, it was tiring, but worth it. I have it covered with the hard cover and plenty oil. Should be good to go!
Flap wheel on a 4" grinder works great
You're right. I used a paint and rust wheel on my cheap angle grinder on another one I did and it worked way better.
did a good job dude not bad for a pencil pusher
Thanks pal! Haha 😂 hey I'll admit I'm soft.
Senior Hussers, you need to come do both of mine! Chop Chop, pencil pusher! Lol
I'll be right over brother!
How long from first use to when you had to strip it down?
Two years
Hussy in your opinion do you think your cooking surface was even better now after resurfacing it than when it was new? PS it was really cool to see you and Todd Toven at your place 👍👍
Not really, honestly. Main thing is to just get it seasoned well.
Thanks HH for this excellent informative video, much appreciated bro. Mason would be proud of his cool papa. Have a nice day my friend in the Great State of North Carolina : )
You're welcome brother. Thanks as always for the great support!
We're hunkdered down in NC waiting for the hurricane!
Carbon grill bricks are a much better way to clean it. Or buy some good strong decreased and get the grill super hot and pour it on and scrub with a steel wool
Very nice man, I got some spot on mine that seem like it peeling. I might have to do this one day. Thanks brother.
I'm thinking maybe if I get a spot or two if you could spot treat as they pop up? Not sure, but think one could.
Let me know how that works out.
I’m going to try this on my blackstone, thank you!
Thank you !!!
I actually need to do this
Another great video myvfriend🙏 I have a question maybe you could give me some advice on? My Blackstone is new, however when I clean and scrape it I’m putting some scratches in it. Is this something I should be concerned with? I’m trying not to push too hard on the scraper. Anyway, I thank you in advance for any help or suggestions you could think of. Thanks again🙏🙏
You’re good. That’s probably just gunk you’re scratching.
I've been dreading having to do this with mine too. I cleaned it every time, but left it for a month after cooking/cleaning it. Now it bloomed like crazy and I am not looking forward to the strip and re-season process.
I wasn't looking forward to it either, but I was missing it badly. I'm glad we're up and running now!
