Hi, sorry for late reply. The orange thing is Glowing Fibre, it's a special "metal mesh" which you can put on the flame for the glowing effect. Just another accessory that could make the fire look more interesting.

They certainly add to the warmth of the room. We advertise them as secondary heat source as most people have central heating, but on average a bio or gel fireplace produces about 3kW of heat (comparable to electric) and has a lovely real flame, which you can't say about electric...

I'm certain there's an obvious reasoning behind this... I know the gel fuel burns longer by design than the straight bio-ethanol liquid, but can the gel be used safely in the elongated burner? Is it because the longer burners have a wick like material in them? Some gels now have a real to life crackle or fireplace popping sound, which adds to the ambiance. I've noticed other companies making statements against the safety of the gel fuel flame going out of control and the fluid boiling. Is it possible to use a flame controller such as the type used in chaffing canned fuels to prevent this? Just curious if anyone has tried or experimented doing these things before I go outside and burn my porch down ;-)

Katharine Velardo Pebbles should always be put around the burner so that they're not touching the flames or you would be getting an unpleasant smell. You can find more answers to our frequently asked questions here: www.biofires.com/content/7-faq!
