The 12 inch+ pine champherboard fascinates me too. North Ipswich (near the timber mill) has an unusually high proportion of them.

Very fascinating stuff! I grew up in Oxley and just like you I had friends from school who lived in the Centenary suburbs and I never knew why the area was called that 😊

Just came across your channel and loving the episodes on the history of suburbs and homes etc... gr8 work. Your helping me with my family history... I have a 1st cousin 4 x removed who married in Spring Hill owing quite some land I believe that went from the corner of Boundary and Fortesque streets and went midway to Leichardt st and Gregory Tce in about 1865 until they moved to England in 1882. So watching your series is helping me to try and find the right sources hopefully in finding more about the history of that area... I've walked it and now its just businesses and other buildings... still researching when I'm in from Charleville... love your work...

Only learned about you from WalkaboutRob recently. Love your work. Have you ever mentioned Gray St. West End. My grandparents owned No.9, Hillside and I would love any information to add from the Heritage Page on the Brisbane Council Website. I believe Gray St. had its fair share on early Brisbane Movers and Shakers.. Cheers

Hi George! No I haven't researched any places or mentioned Gray Street West End (yet!) Your Grandparent's house sounds fascinating though!!

To add to your Centenary Story there was a first that had to be subsequently undone and became a legal precedent and Govt policy for land development to this day. The highway and bridge was funded by Hookers but with them not owning the land on the northern bridge approaches or what ultimately became the Western Freeway, it was resumed by the Government. In the legal action prosecuted by the land owners that followed in the years after, the Court declared the Government didn't have the authority to resume the land on behalf of Hookers or to benefit a private entity. This was irrespective that it ended up as a state road/bridge. The ensuring policy meant land developers then had to acquire by private negotiation, not rely on resumption for any external land necessary for supporting infrastructure.

Oh my gosh, how absolutely fascinating!! Thank you for adding that great info! Incredible to think what an impact introducing that policy has had on the development of Brisbane!

We have a relocated queenslander and it was so fustrating trying to find any history of it. All we really got from the neighbour was it's been here for ages. We went to the council and Qld archives who have only been able to date our place judging by the windows. We have some unique features so we think our house was some kind of government owned house when it was originally built.

Ugh yeah they are so hard to date! It should be mandatory that their original location is carved into the timber somewhere! 😂

In the 50s my grandfather told my father to buy land at what are now the Centenary suburbs. He said a bridge would be put across the river there. He didn’t and regretted it since,
