Would an 88 4.3 have the same intake shape and design as the swirl port. If you swapped to Vortex heads, you'd need the matching intake, which I assume requires something other than a throttle body. Do you then need the ECM from the newer vehicle. I'm thinking unless you're going for a lot more power, some minor porting of the original heads and a decent valve job would be less of a headache and still give you some gains.
Recently found a good 350 Vortec to rebuild. Gonna take it to .040 over and put in the 395 cam, a good carb and an hei distributor. Looking to get about 400ftlb of torque 👍
Hey buddy, thanks for all videos! Question... do you think I can modify a stock TBI intake to fit vortec? So I can drop vortec block in and go, thanks!!
The GM vortec's that say made in Mexico are an upgraded casting thicker they rarely crack and there's a ton of them out there they were sold over the counter from GM and used for merc/marine vortec's and warranty work at chevy dealer to replace the carack prone production version
The question I have is can the the 350 TBI heads breath enough to exceed 400 ft lbs of torque with porting and valve jobs if intake system is also capable.
Have a 93 model delivery box truck with tbi heads. Been want to change to vortec heads but seems my truck would be down too long to make the change. I realize they make an aftermarket intake but have heard stories about having to make a lot of changes idk 🤷♂️ love your videos 👍🏻
you need to keep air fuel ratios and fuel mapping in mind,, MAF and Map values,. fuel pump pressure, ect.. the computer has to get along with the changes.. ive seen this same scenario MANY times, and they cant get it right, they spend thousands more than planned, and end up selling it, in defeat. sometimes the ECM programming has to be modified, and you really dont know what changes they made,, not worth the hassle on a fuel injected, computer controlled engine,, if your going with carbureted, then yes, you can dick with the timing and carburetor until u get it to run good. you may have to get a stand alone Efi set up, with its own computer. THEN you must consider transmission inputs.. if the automatic transmission doesnt see the input values it wants, it will go into limp home mode, or worse burn it up.. if u want a votec motor, buy a truck that already has one in it from the factory.
Hi! My name is Vince . I built a 350 . .30 over . With a stroker crank. Flat top pistons . With the vortec 906 heads. Modified to take a 5.25 lift cam. My question is. Would this set up need a 750 cfm carb or less . I had the engine built buy good friend. He said should make 400hp . Thanks for your advice in advance . Love your videos !
The vortec is the same as early 350 chevy some of the manifolds flex when removed there was a 350 head in the 80's that had both bolt patterns but the TBI and the vortex are definitely the same ex bolt pattern
Ok guys need a little advice! I have a 94 cheyenne 4x4 swb truck with a 5 speed and a 4.3 in it. I have a 305 tbi block, my question is will i gain much power by bolting a set of 350vortec heads on it? Also it will be carburated and a little bit of a cam. Any advice is greatly appreciated guys
that swap has been done and every one has seen very good results , you need to swap in flat tops on the 305 to maintain compression if that’s a concern . other than that put in a nice cam and you’ve got a great little runner
I have an '88 Chevcy 3500 with a 350 TBI. It has 191 heads on it. I also have a set of 882 heads. If I leave the block alone, and not have it bored, would you recommend the 191, or 882 heads? If I have it bored 40, which head would you recommend? Thanks Greg
With the prices of aluminum performance heads coming down, it makes no sense to fool with a set of cast iron units that more than likely will need machine work prior to installation.
Kinda true, but most aluminum heads shouldn't be just bolted on. They still need to be properly checked. Also, I wouldn't be buying them with hardware already installed.
What I like to know is , what company makes good quality mild roller camshafts for Chevy TBI engines . I mean long lasting camshafts and lifters. Thanks for your great Videos
What's the compatibility look like, can a tbi intake setup go rite onto a set of vortex heads with just the 4 bolts on each side & loaded with silicone in the center
You cannot put a TBI manifold on these heads. (I've heard about guys modifying these intakes to do it... but it sounds like a nightmare) I put a set of 906 Vortec heads on a TBI short block with the Edelbrock RPM Performer manifold (for Vortec heads). Topped off with TBI unit from SPR Performance on top of their adapter plate. Challenging but apropriate build for a beginner. Aftermarket cam plus these heads required tuning though.
It's amazing what a 193 TBI head can flow with some trick porting.
Agreed. I love a good tbi headed setup.
@@CarGuyV8 I'll stick with the Vortec head. You're starting with a better head and they have much more potential.

what kind of horse power did you get with that "trick" porting? ive got a 95 tahoe with the non vortec heads... what exactly did you do? thanks!
Will the porting keep if from falling on its face about 4000 rpm
I love my 94 350 tbi Silverado. She won’t pass a snail nor a gas station but she can pull a house down.
Same for my 89 Sierra. If the 700R4 was tougher, it’d be unstoppable.
Same with my 95 2 door tahoe

I have a 98 5.7 vortec in a GMC. Bought it new , daily driver , 326,000 miles on original engine .
Excellent information. I've been on the hunt for a true Vortec motor and keep finding TBI engines instead. Now I know what bolt pattern to look for.
Look for a number on the engine block 880 last 3 digits

Got an asshole lossing head bolts on the outer small bolts of my vortec Chevy engine got a tip to prevent that?

they make an intake so you can use your TBI on the engine with vortec heads

I got my modded '93 TBI pickup (with Vortec heads) tuned with the help of Dave @ Old School EFI.
Truck runs great!

Which carburetor did you decide to go with?
@TheBossenable a 750 vacuumed Secondary Holly
Any issues putting 96-2000 Vortec heads (which used roller cam/lifters) on an older block using a flat tappet cam/lifters?
Is there any major differences in the 062 and 906 heads? Enough to justify looking for one over the other?
The Vortec does NOT have a bigger port than the TBI , factually untrue !
When ported correct they Flo 320 at 800 lift 260 at .500 lift.
what about the 193 head 64cc chamber 215cc runner i thank they are Camaro heads?
Hey man get the cam with flames on the box those 193 will scream lol
I bought a Vortec engine from a junk yard. 880 block, 062 heads. Supposedly from a '99 Chevy Tahoe,
