Thank you for reminding me of names! I live in western Washington state and our climates are similar, and, in my mere 2/3 acre garden, I have many of the same plants as you in Ireland. I’ve collected plants over decades, and some of their names escape me now and then. Bye for now…time to get out in the garden.😍

Speaking of controlling plants or plants controlling you, I just finished with the help of my husband digging up my Wisteria. What a big job, the plant was definitely controlling me, at the age of 70 it was beyond my energy level. The root system was insane, but in the end I’m thinking we were successful. Love your videos, I’d loved to follow you around in your garden. Thanks for sharing ,the best 👍❤️😊

I'm lucky to live on an old estate near stonehenge, the owners let me plant stuff anywhere, I've got lots of space so I can buy anything I like the look of and find a place for it ..
When I see you running out of space John I realise how lucky I am ..
Ideally you needed twice the space you have ..
I only plant shrubs and trees because I haven't the time to weed stuff. .
This year I've planted the fastest growing tree in the world a foxglove tree..
Also this year I've planted 4 mulberry trees and several yew..
I notice you have some royal purple smoke bushes John and I've got 6 of them growing individually around the estate after hearing you say they should be planted apart to avoid making the garden appear dark..
Your Irelands national treasure, and not only do you plant things you enjoy doing it..
I don't do the detail John I leave that you experts, but I can tell you 1 thing as far as gardening goes knowledge of plants is 25% the real art to gardening is putting the right looking and right size plant in the right place ..♡

96 degrees (35.5° C) here, 6 inches below normal rainfall for the year (marginal drought) .. 1pm in the afternoon and a deer was eating my shrubs 15ft away from me 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️ ... some days it's tough being a gardener.

Thanks John , your garden is looking great . I must visit sometime . Putting muck on cut branches to hide them - I’ve done that in past .
Regarding plants that destroy gardens ….
I’ve seen pendulous sedge completely take over several gardens , in fact I seem to be seeing this more & more . ❌DO NOT PLANT !!❌
Anyone who does should be sent to gardeners prison !!

"If you don't control a plant, it will control you", best garden quote I've heard.
I cut out a rugosa rose, the same one you have and it almost killed me.
Now we have 3 standards but not performing well at all.
They were bare roots...do I give them another season or just watch the branches continue to die????
I think they were bad rootstock to begin with.
Love dogwoods, esp the weeping cornus...can look like a waterfall of pure white flowers. There s a few around.

Seek Hydrangea quercifolia Snowflake. The doubling florets stack up like strings of seashells to form a 15" panicle. A beautiful beautiful shrub, especially with the dripping seedheads of the grass Chasmanthium latifolia (though deadhead the grass in July to avoid seedlings, and it makes a beautiful dried stem).
    Lilies also as companion.
Oakleaf hydrangeas will make deep roots, unlike H. macrophylla.

It’s funny that you say this because there was some Achillea that was almost the same color and I thought that’s what it was! Next to the Lychnis. And I have bunches of those growing together kind of by accident.
