This is the first episode of Lore Bits, a new series I started where I cover obscure and interesting facts found in sources like dev interviews and art books but also in general. Since a lot of lore is pretty hard to come by since it's not... in the actual game, I'm hoping to make Splatoon lore more accessible with this. I hope you enjoy!
i like the idea that tartar would’ve use the phone as a disguise and then later reveal his true form as that weird blender with eyes and a mouth that was in concept art.
yeah, though I can see why they didn't go with this design lol But I think there's potential that there could still be another, actual true form of Tartar we haven't seen yet. I like to believe that the goop on the phone was basically just a representation of Tartar, with a central machine housing the actual AI being hidden somewhere else, that could be interesting to explore in future games
@@ardnin in the Tower of Order trailer there is a quick flash on the screen of a dark picture. After managing to pause it at the right moment I was baffled of what I saw. In that picture I could recognize Commander Tartar's old phone disguise, sitting in a dark room, with those same bulging eyes that have just enough of small light on them in the picture to know it's him. He's also attached to some tentacle machine in that same picture. That reminds me of one of the early concept art of him looking like a horrible machine with lots of tentacles. So maybe he will show up in his form like that in the Tower of Order dlc, why else would Nintendo tease such a quick but obvious and dark picture in there? Can't wait to see it happen lol
Tartar: (assumes a crude disguise in order to gain the trust of the strange creatures that now inhabit the earth) Every octarian: AYO!! THIS GUY'S POGGING!!!
this also brings up a funny cultural thing! in japanese cartoons and picture books they often depict octopus as having a tube-like "mouth" on their face, possibly due to the water siphon on their head (think like, the pokemon octillary or any octopus from animal crossing) which may be why the soldier octarians have those puffy lips, and why they mistook the speaker of tartar's phone for an octopus face
And this is common throughout nature too From flowers imitating insects to attract pollinators to fresh water mussels mimicking fish to get their larvae into the gills of actual fish I like to think that the core from the concept art is Tartar's true body hidden either within the telephone or elsewhere
NEW ARDNIN SERIES LET'S GOOOOO clear, concise, and great production quality, and that logos looking Crisp! I'll be looking forward to seeing more of this series
Love the background where “LORE BITS” shows up in all the different scripts! All the footage and editing here is high quality, keep up the excellent work!!
This makes so much sense actually, humans aren't even exempt from this when you think about it: or why else do these random combinations of symbols resemble faces? ^^ :D Looking forward to seeing more of this series!
also it's "mouth"/the actual phone part? resembles the way the siphon is often portrayed in cartoon versions of octopi, that being just a cartoonish version of its mouth smack dab in the middle of its face. first examples to come to mind are the octoroks from zelda and octillery from Pokémon. maybe this is obvious but the video and comments only mentioned the eyes so I thought I'd point it out.
It's the music from the telephone booth in the Zelda Link's Awakening remake. The arrangement was made by one of the Splatoon composers Ryo Nagamatsu who also made Commander Tartars theme. He probably reused the "denwa" sample for this and it's pretty cool this track let's you hear it in clearer quality than how it's used in Splatoon lol
1:13 genuinely cannot find anything about this anywhere (probably because google is stupid and plagues the search results with reviews for the game), what? can you elaborate on this
It's just some early 3d models of the deepsea metro the devs left in the game files in some specific versions of the game, I think they removed it later. I got the files from a data miner who ripped the models when they were still in the game data and I then put them into Blender and set up the shaders to make these camera shots

Thank you!! I'm also looking forward to making more of these, I already have a bunch of ideas that should fit really well with this format
octarian pogs at sight of tar-tar
Some of the octo expansion concepts are so cool! The mission on top of the train especially.
2:15 HELP 😭😭😭

By the way, the text at 1:46 reads “lore bits.” how fun

O.O = octarian friend, apparently?
( O ͜ O) hello octarian fellow
OoO
With this in mind, it makes a lot of sense.
Guess that also explains why Kris fell for Spamton plan in the first place.

Thank you for helping me with my eternal hunger for splatoon lore.
So excited for this new series!!
OCTARIAN POG
2:15 😩
Concept art has the green telephone too. What if the one on cuttlefish’s house used to lead you to the dlc
Good insight.
But what is that jingle at the end? I've never heard it before and it sounds very much official.

@@ardnin To think that the modern version of Link's Awakening would make even more references to other Nintendo IP...

Hey, where did you find the early deepsea metro map?
