Mine is very active at night. She lives in a 55 gallon tank and makes use of the full tank. You are right about finicky eating and in the first year it was hard but as she got older it was less of a problem. My advice is get away from live food asap. Great video I enjoyed it.

It's so crazy that you had such a bad experience w/ BPs in the past. I have 13 BPs and have never had a defensive or bitey one. I have had most of them from baby stage. I just love them, obviously. We also have a Blood Python, who is also a sweetheart. I guess we've been lucky so far. Now that I've said this, my next snake will be a devil. Now I've done it.
I feel I have been very lucky with the ball python I adopted a few months ago. He's my first snake, and with the exclusion of nipping me when he was getting used to being handled, has been an absolute sweetie. He switched to f/t immediately and has taken every meal since. I feel very fortunate, as I feel I might have been discouraged from snake keeping if I had encountered more challenging eating problems when I first got him. This is part of why knowing your snake's history is so important! Thank you for bringing more awareness to proper ball python keeping. :)

Honestly I wanted a ball python for so long until I did more research and found out they are not the species of snake for me. I admire their beauty the most but I am not wanting to deal with the stress that may come with a bp. Research changed my mind and prevented me from getting a long lived animal that wouldn't have been a good fit for me.. thank god for research!! Still love them from afar though 💛💛

I feel really lucky. I got my first BP last month and he has ate all four meals since I brought him home. I was concerned because the breeder said he was on live but assured me I could switch him over and he wasn’t wrong (f/T) He’s not defensive actually quite calm just a lil head shy and I handle him ever now and then but havent been over doing it, when I first held him at repticon it felt like we had an instant connection so maybe that’s it but idk 🤷🏽♀️ 🥰 his name is Paul btw 🐍 (like the alien 👽) I just added some new things to his enclosure today he’s out exploring now
I’d love to have one of these beauties in the future
Just recently got my first ball python. It’s a banana looks very similar to yours and he has been great. Eats like a champ and has such a great personality. But I do agree I would have been panicking if he wasn’t eating. Great video!

I also second that ball pythons are not recommended for a beginner. Even with proper husbandry, humidity, rack system, small and dark enclosure, my youngest ball Peaches has been my problem child since I’ve had him for over a year. He’s super picky and will only take live or prekilled. When switching to frozen, I figured he won’t eat anything that’s wet so I have to thaw out his meals separately from the others to keep it dry. Bps are definitely very rewarding pets but their pickiness with feeds is the sole reason I don’t recommend them for the novice.

Yeah I have to feed pre-killed he won’t eat frozen and he is 3 years old.
I've had my ball python for 14 months now and he has yet to refuse a meal. So far, the whole owning experience has been absolutely chill and I would definitely recommend them as first fine pets, couldn't have asked for a better one myself.
I do think it depends on the individual :)
toni Boni expect him to go off feed at some time because during breeding time they tend to go off feed, and since your ball python isn’t mature yet he won’t go off feed, but in a couple more years expect him too.
That's why your supposed to get them when there about a year and 4 months.

I purchased a ball python on monday and was told wednesday was her feeding day. Left a frozen thawed small mouse in her tub and within 30mins she had taken and eaten it. She was hatched last september on the 16th 😊 She's absolutely beautiful.

my bp lives in a 6ft-5ft-5ft vivarium and i use a basking lamp because heat mats cook them alive and they can get burns with it. lamps also do a day and night cycle and if they are always in the dark, it can shorten their lifespan. otherwise, great video

I agree that balls aren't for the brand new snake owner. Mine was my second snake and the picky eating used to cause me so much stress. It would sometimes take me an hour to convince mine to eat his food. He was switched over to frozen very early on but he still was stressful to feed for about 8 months until I got him to finally start regularly eating. It was especially hard to get him to size up his meals because he'd be scared to take bigger prey.

My ball python is one of my most mellow reptiles ever. He’s 4 years old and I had him for 4 years
I have a 2.5yo GHI Mojave. Had Salazar since he was 3mth (the breeder want them to eat at least 10-15 meals before selling them). Such a beauty with his dark greyish base color and pale yellow spine spots 😍 during my 1st year I changed from wooden with heat cable and CHE enclosure to glass with UTH and sphagnum moss. That change made him definitely more exploring and I guess generally more mentally stimulated. BP make OK animals for racks, but a decorated tank will always be better for their mental stimulation imo.
Planing on getting a blue eyed lucy, purple passion and coral glow in the future. If possible even setting up for each a bioactive enclosure.

For the size of the tanks, I think that it’s ok if your tank is rather small, as long as your snake gets taken out often to exercise and stretch and get the right circulation that’s needed for the noodle

I love your videos!! Always so much good info! So funny how different peoples experiences can be though haha. Ive personally had multiple ball pythons and corn snakes and i can honestly say every damn corn snake i have had is a grumpy bastard, and all of my balls are wonderful, amazing feeders, and in my *personal* experience i found my balls way sweeter and more pleasant than my corns!
Also if your ball is spending alot of time 'soaking' in its water bowl i would highly suggest checking for mites because thats not a normal BP behavior haha (for those who experience this, not directed at you because im sure you know this lol😊)

That is so true, every snake ive owned all has such different personalities, they're my favorite reptile to keep honestly, even the ones with a little more personality then one would like 😂💕
My baby ball python eats frozen I had to rub the mice in used mouse bedding from the pet store but that did it for her might work for others

Very informative video, but most expert keepers would disagree about heating solely with a heat pad. The ambient air temperature needs to be about 85 on the hot side, and its hard to do that with a heat pad outside of a rack system. Radiant heat panels are a great choice. It's also a myth that they must have belly heat. Balls have no ability to sense heat from underneath. It is an effective heat source, but not what they are built for. They are built for radiant heat.
I researched for five years before I finally got my ball python! My only issue I've had is keeping the humidity up.
Britney Skinner You’re lucky you have a great eater! Plastic tubs do wonders for keeping humidity in, if you have a tank with a screen lid, try misting the enclosure and then keeping a towel on top of the lid! 💕
Reptilian Garden yeah! The reason the humidity is messed up is because I'm having to supplement heat with a ceramic bulb (I have a heat mat also) to keep his temperatures absolutely perfect. It's cold right now where I live! I also have a humidity hide for him. I figure the humidity will level out in the summer.
Britney Skinner I hear ya! It’s such a struggle this time of year! I’ve heard putting a heat mat under your water bowl is a great way to increase humidity too

Got mine in a glass terrarium. Mixing 30% shpangum moss with 70% of coco substrate made the trick for me. Still need to mist every 2-3 day depending the season, but it's more stable with the humidity dropping never under 50% whereas before it was every day back at 30%.

@@reptiliangarden very true, I got lucky, and my two have each eaten frozen thawed without a problem since day one, and have never skipped a meal. However since they're all so different and some are so picky, I agree with you on that they aren't the best beginner snakes.
Thank you for this! I got my first BP the week before xmas from a friend. I am still searching for the best substrate as I keep hearing different things from all the people I know. what do you recommend? I was told Aspen, coconut fiber, and a few other things so Im up in the air.
Coconut husk is a good looking substrate that works really well for keeping up humidity. Aspen doesn’t tend to hold it as well and may be prone to molding at the humidity requirements that balls need. Coconut fiber like eco earth or plantation soil can get stuck in their heat pits. Reptibark can stain your snake red. I use a rack and find it’s easier to do paper towels or newspaper. Makes it a lot easier to do full clean outs when they soil their enclosure.
@@StickyFeets Thank you for some different insight. :) I have him in a front opening 40B so the paper towel newspaper wont be a great option for me.
Cypress mulch works wonderfully as well, especially for keeping humidity! Aspen tends to be a bit to dry, and in my experience not humid enough for proper sheds but ive also had friends successfully use it. Depends on where you live and your climate as well as the humidity levels in your house as a whole etc :) i agree no coconut fiber/eco earth or finely milled substrates because of their heat pits, as well as if it becomes too dry it can cause respiratory issues too!
I use Forest Floor for my BP, and it seems to work great. I just have to mist a bit more often because it doesn't hold humidity as well as coconut fiber/eco earth. I got an automatic misting system (ReptiRain) and it works great for keeping the humidity up when I'm not home for a bit.
Coconut fiber, and forest floor are the ones I hear work best. I’m still using paper towel and deciding myself! I do know that aspen is way too dry for them and I have not had good experience with reptibark either, so I wouldn’t recommend it.

I never owned a snake but when I move I want to keep a green tree python and a mexican black kingsnake. I know that gtps are not the best beginner snakes but I need one in my life as fast as possible.

I resonantly learned that a ball python can get over hydrated. Like if they drink to much water then they can leak out of there mouths

So I never had a reptile so I'm a beginner but I rly like the ball python but now u said that they are not that great for beginners idk what I should do becus my first choice was a leopard gecko but they sound more difficult than a ball python so I'm confused. HELP ME GUYS
When we all fall asleep, where do we go? HONESTLY, as long as you are willing to do the research and understand humidity levels and are ready to have a challenge when it comes to feeding a ball python, then you can go for it! Leopard geckos are WAYYY easier than ball pythons! I think that would be a fantastic option. If you really want a snake, I personally think corn snakes are easier to care for! 💕

Radiantaliy They can be, I just wouldn’t recommend them to everyone because I’ve seen so many beginners have no clue how to deal with humidity and they get overwhelmed when their snake won’t eat because there’s a lack of research.
