At least Crystal Skull gave Indy a happy, satisfying ending with a marriage and a son to live out his life. Now in this his son is dead and his marriage is strained. Nothing is sacred with these legacy characters anymore

Stupid looking charisma-free Ryan Gosling makes the film even more irritating. It's just visually gorgeous but it brings nothing new and Hans Zimmer's score is so bland compared to Vangelis' timeless music. Hollywood is so creatively bankrupt...

It wasn’t an “idea” at the time it was just reality of where special effects where at in the early 80s. If GL had access to CGI at the time the early trilogy would have been full of it!

@@davidgeisler9885 I don’t think so. They wanted to make it like the serials of their past. We all have seen so much CGI extravaganza in recent years that it’s just boring and soulless. @@davidgeisler9885 No, Lucas went crazy with CGI in later years. It just wasn't the core concept of Indiana Jones.
I just think that people go to see an Indy movie and expect a few things: a fun adventure, a few scares, low-level "realistic" effects, and a cool James-Bond-like hero. Take these things away and it will fail as an Indy movie, just like KOTCS. Indy must never look like a parody of himself. It needs to look believable. In this regard, I don't think the aesthetic of the new movie fits the bill. It looks fake. It looks like somebody is playing Uncharted. Indy5 is too fast and too furious...

Red letter media and Roger Ebert said it best, the appeal of these films are the high quality action set pieces, travelling to different places and watching Indiana being a badass. You don't really care about his character or relationships that's not the point. If it was about the character then why does he still wear the same clothes at 80 years old.

While normally I agree that a film should be watched before passing judgment, I’ve thrown too much money at Kathleen Kennedy’s Lucasfilm already. Frankly I’ve seen enough of the “aged, broken, depressed iconic hero” trope to know that it’s no longer worth an overpriced movie ticket. Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Willow, and now Indiana Jones. I just think paying for these kinds of films just to “give them a chance” is a waste. This movie doesn’t sound very fun, and that why I watch Indiana Jones.
I’d say I’ll wait until it goes to streaming, but I probably won’t do that either. Kennedy’s Lucasfilm has polluted enough of my childhood memories.
The way I see it, if I keep paying to see these films, I’m giving my financial approval of every decision Kennedy has been making. Money is the only language these people speak. You can’t complain about and keep paying to see it.

A lot of reviewers are saying if the first 15-20 minutes were expanded into a movie they would make a great Indy film, but when they flash forward to the 60's everything goes downhill. So can they still make a decent Indy movie, it seems they can from what we see in the opening scenes, but then they throw that out the window.
Also despite people lauding Ford's portrayal of Indy, Phoebe Waller Bridges character seems almost universally disliked with even those giving the movie a good review saying she is annoying, and not in a Willy Scott, Temple of Doom way, but in a 'she needs no man' sort of way. Hardly surprising when it has been rumoured that Waller-Bridge was allowed to 'punch up' her dialogue. I think if perhaps they had made her a relation of Marcus Brody the fans would have warmed to her more, but introducing Indy's supposed best friend cold in the opening minutes then expecting everyone to take to her was a tall order.

I wish I could agree that this was a better send off for the character than what Indy 4 did. But the film couldn't justify its own run time and then it was just an abrupt ending. (Must have been hasty reshoots) This was not a satisfying conclusion when compared with 3 and 4. It's just sad to see Indy in his twilight years being so broken down and sad, I don't really think that's very 'Indy' at all
He felt like a side character by the back half of the film. I know they had to workaround Ford's age, but the action sequences were lacking because it was filmed with that fast-paced modern shaky cam style so didn't feel like the predecessors. Williams' score wasn't really stand out either

I agree with you on many aspects but this is what you get when you go more "realistic" as the director said he would make HARRISONS age a factor in the story. Growing old can be sad when you outlive everyone and the world has deemed you obsolete. Imagine how many people die alone. Yet that isn't what an Indiana Jones story is about. It is action and adventure about discovery and good beating evil.

This is supposed to be an adventure serial about an archaeologist hunting for artefacts and punching Nazis, we didn't need to see a deconstructed 'grounded' take on the character. That's where it falls apart, Indy was never meant to be viewed from that standpoint. I get what they were going for, it didn't work. Also, don't introduce time travel in the same story arc, as it's a direct contradiction to that. That and an extended cast of characters no one gives a fuck about

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny are essentially epilogues. There’s no rule that says there can be only one epilogue as one of the greatest video games of all time Red Dead Redemption 2 has 2 epilogues since the central storyline is about Arthur Morgan and once he dies, it includes two epilogues focusing on John Marston struggling to live a normal life but is sucked back in to his outlaw lifestyle followed by him building his own home and farm.

Oh dear, when you list that many negatives about a film and then say it was good ... eh.
You don't have to completely hate the film and can avoid the obvious political stuff surrounding it (although the studio pretty much made that a point), but let's not overcorrect in the opposite direction.
No, Helena is not to be his replacement but lets not act like we can't see the pattern of Disney's Lucasfilm continuations and remakes. It might not matter anyway because if this movie doesn't succeed wildly, the studio is looking at $1B in losses in one year. No amount of positive spin reviews or ignoring the causes of this decline will change that.
Yes, it's a decent adventure film about a grumpy old Indiana Jones. The problem is: do I really want to see an old Indiana Jones? If you do, this is the movie for you. If you'd rather have your hero stories end with optimism for that hero's future, which is kind of the point of this genre of films (hence the "happily ever after" motif), then no. I'll stick to the first three movies being the actual series and the last two as being fan faction.
Regardless, I'll just chalk this up as an "agree to disagree" moment for a channel I otherwise find reliable for sensible movie reviews.

Not to mention to the CGI for Harrison Ford and the train chase. A couple of problems I will have is that the action felt a bit too prolonged and everywhere. Some of the film didn't really know where it was going. Particularly the Morocco and New York scenes. I also think the villain should have clearly have been killed at the start with the train chase too. Other than that. It was great. 7.5-8/10

An article I read yesterday said that Jurgen said some 'racist microaggressions' to a black butler, but I heard nothing of the kind. I loved the nods to the previous four instalments. The second trailer had some lines which were whipped out of the final cut, which annoyed me.
This was the second time I saw an Indiana Jones photoplay in the cinema. My first time was when Raiders Of The Lost Ark waa re-released just afore Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull was released, and it was a dream come true watching this action adventure in theatres. I had seen it multiple times on videocassette and then on DVD. But viewing it for the first time in widescreen was amazing. And I stayed through the end credits to hear the music written by John Williams. I did the same thing when the credits began for this fifth (and sadly final) adventure. But the franchise ended on a high note, even though I would have loved to see Steven Spielberg's original vision when he waa still going to direct it. I wonder what Renee Wilson found so 'offensive' about her final scene that she asked James Mangold to change it. I wish the lines in the second trailer which were not in the final cut had been kept in. However, I loved this instalment.

I just don't like the whole concept of the dial. Since when is Archimedes linked to any mystic powers and where dose the whole dial-concept come from?
The past movies always played with ACTUAL legends and myth (well as actuall as ferrytales can get but still) and there are so many more things in one of the thousands religions mankind went to in the last millenias that could be used for an Indy-Flick (Asian or midle-eastern folklore could have been a cool bit, things like Babylon or japanese stuff maybe...and don't get me started on the fate of atlantis ;) ).
instead they make up this nonesense...

I agree, big part of the Indiana Jones charm is that they actually focus on ""real"" artefacts. Even the Crystal Skulls, while fake in their origin, had a big mythos around them and the ancient aliens theories have also been there for a long while, which I thought they combined quite well. This movie has like one deadly trap, the final tomb is located next to a tourist attraction instead of some ancient lost place, and the villain dies not because of the wrath of any god or because the artefact he searched for rips his flesh trough space and time, no, he just crashes his plane. These might seem like nitpicks but they are part of what sets Indiana Jones apart from other adventure movies

The dial concept in this movie is the Antikythera mechanism which is an Ancient Greek hand-powered device, described as the oldest known example of an analogue computer used to predict astronomical positions and eclypses decades in advance. It was found in 1901 in the sea in Greece. There is no evidence to suggest however that it was made my Archimedes in reality.

    • @lupo1185
      @lupo1185 11 місяців тому

@@mrjohntheo154 yes, I know of that device and was also guessing it inspired them for the movie but still: no myth or legend around it in regards of any magic or whatsoever.

George Lucas used the ending from one of the episodes of Amazing Stories titled "The Rift." The WW2 pilot flies his plane through a rift in the sky back to the past after he ends up trapped in the future. The whole Dial of Destiny was a lazy writers tool to attempt a time travel element and waste money on de-aging Indy when it wasn't necessary. The role should've been re-cast. If Kathleen Kennedy actually did her fxcking job and searched for good skilled acting talent (Brandon Sklenar), this series could've gone forward with some new adventures. I love Harrison Ford. Always have. But he had a great ending in Crystal Skull, even though that movie was a bit of a turd. He gets married to Marion. Mutt seems to be back on track and he's walking out of a church wearing his hat. It's all good.

The whole purpose of movie trailers is to sell the movie. If the trailer looks bad then people usually come to the conclusion that its bad. The trailer and everything ive see and heard about this movie looks bad. So people who haven't seen it can have and share their opinion on this movie. Its kinda like crack. I've never tried crack but from what I've seen/heard it's bad. Don't think I or anyone else has to smoke it first before having a opinion on it.

The cgi has got to stop.... or sparingly used just to fill out scenes and touch up work...its absolutely horrible..it allows directors to rev things up to 200mph but looks absolutely horrible and allows people to do such unrealistic things inside of a effing cartoon basically..and you can obviously see that...back in the day things were in shot ,really there practical effects and miniatures and things slowed down but really done with stuntmen look so much better... like the action in the Last Crusade or James Bond The Living Daylights that era into the mid to late 90's movies like Dantes Peak were the last great era of special effects for me

I like your videos and recognise the work you put into them, but have to disagree on this one. I saw Diarrhea of Dysentery yesterday and was very disappointed, and that was despite going in with low expectations. The opening sequence is the best part of the film by far, but the de-ageing of Harrison looked off just enough to become a distraction. From then on the film becomes a turgid slog of globe trotting interspersed with action set pieces but it felt by the numbers and stale. The two big action scenes are nothing new, we've seen tuk tuk chase in Octopussy, and seen the hero ride a horse through the city in True Lies. Those scenes were very CGI heavy and too easy to spot what was effects work and what was live action. Indy was sidelined and upstaged too much by the Helena character, who wasn't very likeable and certainly never came across as charming. I'm not a fan of Phoebe Waller-Bridge and although the character was never going to appeal, may have come across better if played by another actress such as Kiera Knightly, Holiday Grainger or Natalie Dormer for example. The films biggest let down is the final act, to say it's a bit far fetched is an understatement - it was utterly stupid! The film also lacks the look and feel of an Indy film with Steven Spielberg at the helm, they do a reasonable job of copying the style, but it never feels quite right. Although Crystal Skull was a vastly inferior installment in the franchise, I much prefer it to Dial of Destiny - which I'd give 4/10 and that's mainly for the opening sequence.

To me, your reviews as an early 40 year old, have taken that place and you are my only video review channel I watch. I can remember watching the Last Crusade review live on the BBC! Now here I am watching your review of another Indy film all these years later. I told myself I wouldn't go see this film, but then I decided that would be silly. I enjoyed it. Good adventure film. Was a bit long but didn’t drag. I also found it very loud in places. I feel it was done well and I certainly didn’t come out of there disappointed. Music was great. The cgi of him young was amazing. They could nearly pull off a whole film based earlier if they really wanted so given a couple more years or so for the technology to really hold out. The Nazi scenes were great, really felt like an Indy film. I’m glad they did it, although I’m a little sad it’s the last one. I’ve grown up with these movies.

With the exception of the first 30 minutes which were great, This movie didn't feel like an Indiana Jones film. The character of Helena is so annoying and pointless that she absolutely ruins the film and Indiana Jones feels like a broken old man. She's really mean and rude to him throughout. It was painful to watch and at points the film is just way too long. It should have been called Indiana Jones and the Abusive Care Giver.
