  • Nichols was created in 1905 by the Nichols Phosphate Mining Company that housed their workers & their families.
Company owned phosphate towns began to phase out during the 1950s. As the companies grew and our infrastructures were improving and with more people buying automobiles, workers didn’t need to live close to their jobs.
January 1960 residents of Nichols were given notice that the town was closing. The company homes were sold to employees as operations continued at the processing plant.
By the 1980s, phosphate companies were experiencing layoffs and temporary closings. Nichols shut down temporary in 1986 due to deteriorating supply and demand for phosphate fertilizer.
Eventually, Nichols was sold in 1996 and with other companies that were struggling and making bad business decisions, Nichols was shut down permanently in 1998.
