(Lyrics)
See that girl, barefootin' along,
Whistlin' and singin', she's a carryin' on.
There's laughing in her eyes, dancing in her feet,
She's a neon-light diamond and she can live on the street.
Hey hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day.
Well everybody's dancin' in a ring around the sun
Nobody's finished, we ain't even begun.
So take off your shoes, child, and take off your hat.
Try on your wings and find out where it's at.
Hey hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day.
Take a vacation, fall out for a while,
Summer's comin' in, and it's goin' outa style
Well, lie down smokin', honey; have yourself a ball,
Cause your mother's down in Memphis, won't be back 'till the fall.
Hey hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day.
This is one of the only songs that *best* sums up the 60's hippie culture - "There's laughter in her eyes, dancing in her feet, She's a neon-light diamond and she can live on the street"
What a time, what a time!!
Spyes23 yes a great time for stupid young bitches to be drugged and used for sex because they were convinced it was cool only to give way to STD's and unwanted bastard children and the tearing down of the fabric of society with feminist bullshit and social justice retardation. What a time ... what a time.
1967 was an especially special year in planet earth history.
Bruce Wendell only for you fucking baby boomers that are about to die off thank fucking god. Be done with you ass clowns! The World doesn't give a shit about 1967. May it burn in hell with the rest of your souls.
Definitely the best year for music of all time!
In 1967 when my sister turned 18 and left home, I was 7 and inherited her album and 45 collection. She had this album and I fell in love with it from the beginning. I was the only kid my age who loved this type of music; the others were all nuts about stuff like the Osmonds and Bobby Sherman, lol. Thanks to my sister I learned good taste in music.
If I left, I would take my treasure albums with me no matter how heavy those were.
sounds like almost famous!
I went to a Rat Dog concert in '97.During a brief pause, I yelled "Golden Road!" from 30 ft from the stage. B. Weir looked @ my KISS t-shirt, smiled & I yelled it 2x. He didn't know if I meant 2 describe Dead's longevity or asked 2 have G.Road played.Later we knew that he wanted 2 preserve the memory of ONLY Jerry's voice w/ G.Road.G.Road captures patience, freedom, sense of humor & civility of hippie movemnt in 60's--the dance/rap music mainstream movemnt of 2day & kids can learn from this...
wow... really? is that why trey anastasio and bruce hornsby sung it together and sounded like white guys clapping on 1 and 3.... to a song in 7... after being up for 5 days on meth... and i mean the bad version of that. yep, it was at the last dead show. maybe jerry’s death wasn’t enough heartache for the band, and their growing taste for blood (or mediocrity) inspired them to murder the song as well. or perhaps bobby weir thinks trey has a really soulful delivery, uhh? wowie! what’d ya think?
yeah, born in '93 and i can hardly stomach anything past the 80's
long live cream, the who, CCR, doors, zeppelin rush and the dead (my three personal favourites)
Isn’t that 7?
@@richdebene wow, a reply after 10 years! Perhaps I ought to have shoehorned in an 'as well as', but hey pobodie's nerfect
Panic just Slayed that
Face Melted !
❤⚡💙
Still my favorite of all Dead songs. Brings back memories of junior high teen dances.
When the Dead first got a recording contract they did this album with the hopes of being a psychedelic garage band sound with the unlimited devotion of the Beatles fans. And in a way all that came true and more.
The 'call and response' vocal on this has always been KILLER. Mercy! FYI I just love this, if you care.
They nvr get old..glad I was able to see emm a few times in the 90s..suprised i even remember.lol
Love this early Greatful Dead tune!
@danaa927 Good for you Dana, I'm an old fart, 57 in November, 2011. I remember when Jerry & Friends played the Capitol Theater, Passaic, NJ (now, a Pizza Hut and R & S Strauss auto parts/service store) back in 77, 78, 79. Little tiny & intimate joint, but inside we smoked Big Joints, How many Grateful Dead fans does it take to change a lightbulb? NONE, you let the bulb burn out, then you follow it around for 40 years. Look at the colors at that pigeon, FAR OUT MAN !!! Have A GRATEFUL DAY !!
I've always sung " ... have yourself a bowl. Cause your mother's down in Memphis, smokin' crack 'till the fall."
One of my favourites
Neighbors in the Haight 3 doors down, across the street. Still love this song.
Its a hoot
I still love this Dead song the best.
Yes ditto.
The word is LOVE, SPREAD THE WORD...
Final verse I have always heard as "Summer's comin' in, Winter's goin' out of style" which makes sense to me as well. I believe I bought this in the UMass (Amherst) bookstore in 1967.
Just played on my oh so evolved radio station (WEXT97.7)...still one of my favorite Dead songs/albums...
True preachen' for the young at heart.
This is my fav dead album...they were soo cool..their sound engineer and technican is a total legend!! I had a video of this song years ago and it turned me on to the "dead"... We would love to see it again!!
You mean the bear? Owsley?
@@skeletonkey6 Of course !
Apparently, this song's album is sadly underrated by Deadheads. I'm trying to become a deadhead... and so far, from some songs I heard on the radio and this song, I'm impressed.
This is what the GRATEFUL Dead is all about.
Dont much listen to this band, love this song and "the movie" performance. Always on my list, this one.
FIRST DEAD CUT I EVER HEARD FLOATING AROUND AT SCHOOL FROM A BUNCH OF MY FRIENDS MOMS VICODIN. SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN UN-LIMITED IN MY DEVOTION TO THE DEAD, AND DOPE
How could they have only played this only 8 times live???
That’s real?
Maybe it was kinda hard to recreate live or something. I'm guessing but it sounds like one of those songs that was recorded in a unique way and things are happening almost accidentally that are kind of magical.
I first heard this song when I was 11. Wow. Still great!
That last chord... It’s like a fun little beach party and then one of the kids gets attacked by a shark.
Lmao 😂😂😂
I couldn't have said it better John!
That wasn’t really there...
Yes! Kind of Zappaesque, imho - almost expecting to hear Frank say, "but what about Mary Lou?"
Ya a land shark man
wish someone would put the entire first lp on youtube...truly a masterpiece of a "time and place"...very good time and place...thanx for this tune...
read long strange trip. its the inside history of the grateful dead. they needed a single for warner brothers because that was the thing to do in a record companys mind. so they slapped this together. the funny part is that its actually a good song for the reason for making it. they just wanted to convey the feeling in the air of the time.
hey hey, come right away, come and join the party, every day.
My first album turned on to me by my pops. Also got the Jimi Hendrix Experience. A righteous man with turned on values.
Jerry was a rosecrution if you didn't know , look at the album covers .
And we're off ... ... ... !!!
The Grateful Dead🤸🤸🤸🤸
The Dead made this album all hopped on STP, a kind of speed in about a week and Dave Hassinger, the producer had trouble with the Dead almost from day one. He just didn't understand their sound and tried to make what he thought should be a conventional rock and roll record. Phil Lesh would say years later in an interview "We weren't ready to make an album. We hadn't really came together as a band with a true sense of who were we musically and what we wanted to sound like.''
Awesome Song.. love it!
I wish i could find a live version of the that was longer awesome tune though, one of my favorites!
Always thought it was "lie down smokin, have yourself a bowl"
:(
With that song, you have to use your imagination!!
This song is about the Earth revolving around the sun from the Vernal Equinox->Summer Solstice->Autumnal equinox
God I love this song!
Fun song, & love the bass work!!
this is my personal favorite dead song. that and maybe alice d millionaire.
everybody's dancin their way around the sun, nobody's finished we ain't even begun.
The thing about this album is that you hear one song and then you've got to hear another...I kept waiting for "Beat It On Down The Line" to start playing...still waiting...
It blows your mind to think how many people became hippies because of this song.
Who would look up or come across a dead song and dislike it?
The first song from their debut album is one of my all time favorite songs
this is their best song why isnt it more fammous
See that girl, barefootin' along,
Whistlin' and singin', she's a carryin' on.
There's laughing in her eyes, dancing in her feet,
She's a neon-light diamond and she can live on the street.

I feel like this is the opening song to the Monkees
Gr8 song!
Like the one and only Dead song that I really liked. First song on their first album..it was all downhill from there.bahahahaa
Too bad they didn't keep this one as a regular show opener...😔
WMG, if u pull this, ur toast!!!
Everybodys dancin' in a ring around the sun
bobby and the right hand corner man however who when he was out front it's tough
YES, they were so "swinging !" lol
@gtz1975 it is, Gathering of the Vibes 2010
rock ON
HEEYY PARTYY EVERYY-FKN-DAYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!
@danaa927 I totallly agree with you, I'm the same age and all this stuff my friends listen to I just can't stand. It really is embarrassing that the type of music that's the most popular today is hardly even music. I find myself listening to the exact same things my grandparents once danced and partied to because it is simply the best music out there. Long live the dead, (:
heyhey--you gotta party everyday you just gotta.
what a song title.
Take a vacation. Fall out for a while...
Nobodies finish we ain't even begun! haha
I'm going to take off my shoes and fall out for a while... 🍺😎👍
RIP Jerry Garcia
1942-1995
@2007MelodyMaker same here
jerry said he was embarrassed by this--'we were on speed and played too fast.'
really? can you give me the source?
zero dislikes for a reason!
I am sorry for what my generation has done to music, but I am sure that in the next five years, there will be a movement. It's happened through all periods of music. For people my age, I agree with steelwizard, I think people just need to be introduced to great music - and not just one kind, either. Every kind! I love every kind of music as long as I think it sounds good, and i think people just need to be enlightened. As for this song, I love it. It's my favorite Dead song. Jerry
Well that didn't happen. And never can again. The music industry is a buy-in club and the marketing people are scientists of culture manipulation. The movement is created in a lab now.
@Shukaku900 One of the best happy joy joy party songs of all time.
Steeeemmpy!
Oh my gosh. You guys really are not listening to enough Dead if you're worrying about stupid sh*t like people saying they're 19. You're right, nobody really cares, except for apparently you who took the time to spread negativity over something most people wouldn't take a second glance at. And look at this, you're pulling me in, too. Take a deep breath and SMILE
The golden road to unlimited devotion is only 2:16 long.
Rotflmbo!
Happy anniversary of the day Jerry Garcia graced this bright blue spinning ball with such bright energy, love, talent...
@HempForVictory It's on the CD titled "(The Bobs) Cover the Songs Of". Don't know if it's available online. Hope this helps.
nice to see at the young can still RECOGNIZE good music
good writing, good tunes - I was wondering...
The Cosmic Big Bang of Hippiedom born in 2:12 seconds.....TJ STRUSKA
I'm more than embarrassed of my generation, but disgusted, but this kind of music takes all the stress away
That doesn’t make any sense there’s wonderful people in every generation.
what, no dislikes, wow thats a youtube first,..wait it's the Dead, that's why! :)
San Francisco in its better days.
acidic intro
joe atkinson use ph down or a little alkaline water
1st dead song i heard 'em perform
me as well, but it was a cover band that performed. they are known as the schwag. they have a festival called schwagstock durring the warm months of the year into October. first song I can remember them playing back in 07
DoubleRubberbands i 1st saw 'em in 1967 at the masonic temple in portland, oregon. kesey & his merry pranksters were there passing out paper cups full of electric kool-aid. whatta night.
you saw them in '67? Wow.
Robert Wright that’s insane. Insanely jealous.
@Logik420films im 19, a lot of the teenagers i know that like modern music also like the classics like the stones, zeppelin, and sabbath.
@OspreyD40 I always heard that verse saying
"light out smokin' "
booyah
@danaa927 yea our generation doesn't know what good music is. the fact that almost every teenager out there posts this same comment on every video that was made before 2000 shows we are all listening to lady gaga, ke$ha and Rihanna and ignoring the classics
I wish Jerry didn't ditch this song.
Then he/she just listening and enjoy
i would love there to be a videoooo
This is my favorite Dead album because they never really sounded sharper than this. It might have been because they were all gakked on Ritalin, apparently.
@danaa927 same man! i'm 16! this is where it's at.
Jah Herb Jah Jerry Jah love Jah hash from Tucson Arizona Sonoran 🏜️ desert 🍄🌵🇯🇲🇺🇸🌍 Afro Viking 🇬🇳 here Rastafari praises Africa Ethiopia Addis Ababa Selassie I 🐊🐠🐍🦉🦒🦛🐫🦏🐪🐘🦓 Africa one people one planet one love chant down Babylon that way Zion I this way.n
Back when freaks were freaks
i have the mono lp
could have gotten another one
what can I say-Ilija the Cat (I call him cat 'cause he's cat) won't eat if Dead is on. His favourite is Casey Jones, and sometimes Scarlet Bebonias. Did I mentioned that Ilija is She?
@danaa927 your generation will get it when they get a bitolder.....not everybody "gets it" at 17. i was raised with the dead. went to a show at 7 with the 'rents. still didnt listen till i was 21. prolly didnt "get it" till was 23-24....still dont fully understand but the mind is open. it is promising to see a 17 year old keeping the torch alive.
@danaa927 Right along with ya brother.Never stop jammin' to the dead!!
@danaa927 do you know that you can get good crisp shows from bt.etree.org. many, many, many dead show torrents along with a couple hundred other bands. downloaded 40gb of music two weekends ago. :)
For all you Dead haters this totally groovy! 😁
I checked on several lyrics sites and those all had the same lyrics as written hered, however, I also think it's not "come and join the party" I'm hearing "join and come party everyday" I think I'll have to d/l and time stretch this to really pick out exactly what's what.
This album represents Warner and the dead producing a solid accomplishment that will endure into eternity.
This sucks. I had an original Golden Road poster complete with black holes and The Dead morphing in and out of reality and it wound up stashed in the attic when I moved. Very bittersweet.
