I'm 58, and learned many years ago not everyone feels the love for this band that I have. That's cool, not everyone is supposed to get it. When you meet someone who does its like a fraternity, a brotherhood. Chances are that person doesn't have room in heart or mind to hate. Only love. Each year there are less of us. Hoping dead and company will turn on some younger fans to keep the magic going. Peace.
I'm 22, and I absolutely love this band, I hear ya man. I cherish every moment my ears are graced with their mellifluous voices and they're melodic instruments. Much love for you, this band and to anyone who loves this band and anyone who shares views of equality, love, solidarity, world peace, compassion or any cosmic or hippie ways. even common deceny which seems to be scarce these days. I wish the whole world could love this band and just love each other, and not be violent or dastardly to one other. Not be discriminative, not shoot people, not bombard a nation, just be good humans and treat everyone as you'd want to be treated. "Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything." Plato ....I'm done, just wanted to share what was on my mind, peace man.
Very refreshing to know there's young people that look at life the way you do. You seem to understand the message of Garcia and the dead. People need to take their own path in life. Regardless, its what's inside that matters. Curious at your age, what got you interested in this music, and to be so enlightened to what's really important in life?
We are all the same type of people, iv'e noticed it...it is a brotherhood I can almost be certain that I like them if they listen to the Dead, I love you all
I'm 20, I got into grateful dead when I was 16 while researching/and studying life.. I haven't met anyone who really listened to the dead besides myself. I like going to the tribute shows!
When I was 17 and mentioned to my dad that I was going to a Dead concert he gave the usual "dope smoking hippie " speach. Along with " you better not be doing drugs blah blah blah. When I bought this album and played it I noticed he would get closer to my room.Dad being a lover of classical music actually liked it wouldn't admit it but I knew he did. And when ever I would go out I always imagined him putting it on while searching my room for paraphernalia. Rest in peace Pops I miss you.
Ha! This was the first Dead album I ever heard. I was 17 when the record came out and was visiting my Aunt in Georgia. One day I was driving my first car, which I had just bought, out in the woods outside of Athens. I got really lost. Suddenly from outta nowhere there's this older dude walkin along the red dirt road. I asked him if he could help me. He said, "Sure. But first we have to stop by my house." So he hopped in and we went to this little shack in a clearing. He proceeded to pull out a bong and....well, one thing led to another. The next thing I know I'm sitting in this bean bag chair, stoned to the bone and he's crankin both sides of Terrapin. I still don't remember how I got home that day. But I was hooked!!!!
Great story brother...I used to listen to this on cassette every night to put me to sleep. Had the fortune of seeing them twice before Jerry died.. as a black guy growing up in 80s long island it was a huge relief to go to a concert and not even think of what color I was. Music and atmosphere this good brings people together.
D Sarg Yeah, growin up in the western burbs of Chicago I saw no racism. I had, and still do have, several good black friends. We moved here to Ft. Myers FL in '99 and there's a lot of racism. In fact, you can draw a line right through the center of town and that's what separates white from black. Still, I try to be as friendly and normal as I was back in the Land of Lincoln. Unfortunately, there is a lot of crime here and it's almost all on the 'black side of town'. I think it sucks. I'm not sure why it's that way in so many cities. But too often the behavior of a few seems to stoke the fires of "victimized" stereotypes. Not sure how we got off on this but you're right, you would never see an inkling of any type of racism at a Dead show. Especially back in the good ol' daze. I started kinda late too. My first show was in '81. I went to over 50 shows in a short period of time, but I thought the band started going down hill around '89/'90. It got harder and harder to catch the boys on a good night, thanks to Jerry's constant struggle with drugs. Well, glad you caught 'em before it was too late, Sarge. Peace. And have a great new year!
Mark Halassy Actually he was only a couple years older than me. I think he was a dropout from the university. But I remember getting so stoned that I got kinda paranoid. His little place just reeked of patchouli. As I recall he walked me out and explained how to get through the woods back to the main highway, but I burned a half tank of gas trying to find my way out. When I got back to Chicago in the fall I went out and bought Europe '72. Still didn't start goin' to shows til '81 at Alpine Valley. After the first of 50+ shows I realized that all these studio records were total shite, compared to the real thing...
I remember 20 years ago when you wanted to listen to something like this you had to go find the casesset tape. Now you come to UA-cam and its like a kid in a candy shop with this MUSIC!
I totally agree. This particular record, Terrapin Station.... it took me about two years to find it at an "antiques fair" or something, back in 1988. To make things worst, as I don't live in USA, tehre was only half a dozen people in my hometown who had ever heard about The Grateful Dead. And now everything I've ever been interested in listening, anytime and anhywhere, is just a click away.
Yeah. Really neat this device called, "Internet". I can go with spirit and walk out of this library so much happier than I was when I walked into here. All the love that I can remember . . . still alive . . . like God intended. Been homeless for 35 years now. But the library keeps the love alive. Just like an opera house does.
Can’t believe UA-cam put a ad in the middle of this masterpiece. This is by far the best song ever written by man. Period...., Just look at my play list. Nothing comes close ....
It definitely won't brainwash them lol I did the same for my daughter, n she's not the biggest grateful dead fan, it's not as if we're forcing a lifestyle on them....just a good way to relax and the slow gd songs make great lullaby's...my kid still loves those but she's def not a hippie child, shes not forced into anything. Though hopefully that comment wasn't serious.
My mom said that I was a very still and calm baby while in utero, but when she’d listen to the Dead I’d liven up. I’m 23 now and was raised on the Dead. Till this day they are still one of my favorite bands. Each and every song I hear of theirs brings back so many calming memories of my mother and I when I was young and when things were perfect. Maybe your daughter will be blessed with the same.
The instrumental section at 6:30 always send me to another dimension and almost everytime I end up in tears from sheer amusement, how did someone compose such beautiful peace of music? It's like they selected the right notes, the right timing, the right changes, everything is perfect. I have no choice but replay it 15 times until I finally can return to the ordinary world.
melonhead34 I was playing this for my wife and I noticed the similarity to my favorite band, Jethro Tull. The rhythms, instrumentation, flutes and general composition sound just like them. I like!
Amber Relph The best thing the Dead did. It's baroque textures are very English Chamber Music also, and is driven by the drum and bass arrangements I like the pseudo-mariachi bit in the middle as well.
Not sure, so did I. We should make sure we are not infultrated by aliens and then stand next 2 the window Michell...oops. Darn it all, my camera's broken!
OH My! What a crispy version!! This is so tight you need not apologize man, this is a blast to have, a true treasure, thanks for the upload. And the band played on...
This was my first Grateful Dead album. It somehow appeared in my record collection when I was 14. I was astounded by the lyrics. It inspired me to go to the last Dead show in my area. I never got to the concert because public transportation closed before I could make it all the way and I had to return home. Jerry died a year later. Now the music is part of me. This album feels like home. It gets better with age. It is pure magic.
My first and only GD album. Always wondered in the 80´s what GD was about and saw the cute terrapins dancing on the sleeve so I bought it without listening first. Ended up as being thankful for discovering one of the absolute best rock albums of all time. It is so special that it holds many of those 'are you experienced?' qualities to it. Too bad for new listeners this upload is terrible audio quality.
"See the Turtle of Enormous Girth" "On his shell he holds the Earth." "His thought is slow, but always kind." "He holds us all within his mind." "On his back all vows are made;" "He sees the truth but mayn't aid." "He loves the land and loves the sea," "And even loves a child like me."
So much negativity on the comments. Just relax.. enjoy the tunes.. and be happy. Who cares what some nameless face has to say over the internet? Who cares if there are poser hippys, or regular hippies, or people hating on this music.. there are so many people who love this and THAT is why this is posted. For people to love.
I'd say I'm a hippie, even though I personally gave up drugs some years ago. I think it's all about loving each other, and everyone else, period. That's what my parents taught me growing up, marching against the Vietnam war, supporting the United Farmworkers, anything that demonstrated love to each other. I still try to do that, though it's pretty hard sometimes. But hey, it's better than the alternative. Peace, everyone. Love each other.
Terrapin is an absolute masterpiece. Great music is not meant to be fully understood. Robert Hunter and Jerry together were something from another realm which many will not understand. Thats the beauty in GREAT music. Its there for you to take the reigns and paint your own picture
When I got to South Korea, back in Apr 12, this was what I rolled to to get over being away from my lovely wife and 2 year-old daughter "a soldier from the looks of him" so-to-speak. Here I am again on NYE listening again. Thanks Jerry, for help through the hard times. Even Move Me Brightly wasn't enough, although it was awesome.
LADY WITH A FAN Let my inspiration flow in token lines suggesting rhythm that will not forsake me till my tale is told and done While the firelight's aglow strange shadows in the flames will grow till things we've never seen will seem familiar Shadows of a sailor forming winds both foul and fair all swarm down in Carlisle he loved a lady many years ago Here beside him stands a man a soldier by the looks of him who came through many fights but lost at love While the storyteller speaks a door within the fire creaks suddenly flies open and a girl is standing there Eyes alight with glowing hair all that fancy paints as fair she takes her fan and throws it in the lion's den "Which of you to gain me, tell will risk uncertain pains of Hell? I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance" The sailor gave at least a try the soldier being much too wise strategy was his strength and not disaster The sailor coming out again the lady fairly lept at him that's how it stands today you decide if he was wise The storyteller makes no choice soon you will not hear his voice his job is to shed light and not to master Since the end is never told we pay the teller off in gold in hopes he will come back but he cannot be bought or sold TERRAPIN STATION Inspiration, move me brightly light the song with sense and color, hold away despair More than this I will not ask faced with mysteries dark and vast statements just seem vain at last some rise, some fall, some climb to get to Terrapin Counting stars by candlelight all are dim but one is bright: the spiral light of Venus rising first and shining best, From the northwest corner of a brand-new crescent moon crickets and cicadas sing a rare and different tune Terrapin Station in the shadow of the moon Terrapin Station and I know we'll be there soon Terrapin - I can't figure out Terrapin - if it's an end or the beginning Terrapin - but the train's got its brakes on and the whistle is screaming: TERRAPIN AT A SIDING While you were gone these spaces filled with darkness The obvious was hidden With nothing to believe in the compass always points to Terrapin The sullen wings of fortune beat like rain You're back in Terrapin for good or ill again For good or ill again
Those who weren't struggling to make it through the hell of the 1970s can't really understand the deep spiritual healing the Dead offered then, when much of the good of the 1960s was dying or dead and much of the bad was increasing. This album and "Shakedown Street" helped some of us make it through that time.
im not a big dead head fan, but I really like their music. it's so calming whenever you're stressed. I swear one time I was so stressed out, I turned to the Dead and actually felt like a skeleton.
I don't know if there's a better song to be heard... I'll never forget the time I FINALLY 'HEARD' this song in all its glory. INSPIRATION, move me brightly! Light the song with sense and color. Blow away despair!
You nailed it. I love the layering of music that both the Dead and Zappa have in their sound. I routinely come back to listen to these two great artists/bands from time to time.
The best thing about turtles is they don't talk, they just listen to the frogs and the crickets play their songs. Happy are they who listen and don't speak. Is there really anything to add to this magic? simply be silent and enjoy.
FishLocal My Friend, Everything living draws strength for they who pass. Our time in this life is short, our legacy can be quite long...if wisdom guides our thoughts and Grace humbles our soul; then, and only then, might we softly offer words.
FishLocal My friend, I find it has grown inside me. Holding others with an open hand, lifting them up, never clutching them to stay. Freedom offers strength.
Best studio cut of anything they ever did, both music and the phenomenal lyrics. And live....Oh My GOD...that seeming endless coda to fadeout at the end that you wanted to last forever, as it just got better and better. So many memories.... You are SO missed, Jerry. RIP.
Dominique D'Amico wow! I was listening to the song and reading comments, the exact moment your comment appeared this section of the song started, crazy coincidences happen with crazy music lol cheers

Raquel Duehlmeier Fukingroovin! The grateful dead were truly,,, innovative ,,, outside the box band! They proved it again on the 4th of July... they showed this on the back drop while they played their encore... www.dead.net/features/50th-anniversary/us-blues-empire-state-building-takeover cut and paste... and turn it up to 11! Peace!
Thank you for posting! I just listened to this track for the first time in ages (I have the LP, but haven't played a vinyl album since 2003 or so!) Beautiful.
I am not a Deadhead. I grew up and suffered on the streets of NYC. I don;t know what this song means. A friend who was passing through my life played this song once or twice while we were getting drunk and high, Clearly it resonated with me as I'm listening to it now twenty years later. Still don't understand it.
it's just about the journey of life I think. various opportunities we are presented with and the choices we make. but that ultimately we end up at the same place. maybe it's an afterlife. maybe it's just death. that's my take anyway. no idea if that was the intent lol
Listened again today, same blessing and message....we are loved and have great value! you're obligated to spread His message of joy to children of all ages, give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those....
thanx for the upload. a unique, one of a kind combination of lyrics and composition. been listening to it forever, never tiring of its beauty, truth, soothing power...
If you don't open the door and go through, no one to blame but yourself! The door is inside your heart, it leads to the light of lights... GOD is it's name, so much more to gain in life comes thru this door!!! the door to so much more! LOVE IS IT.... don't be left behind. You will kick yourself like crazy!!!! we LOVE You
This has to be one of the greatest compositions in modern music and it is in my opinion the Dead’s best song ( objectively and subjectively - many contenders though - and my personal top 10 list shifts around a lot ) because it covers all of the bases in what their music is about in one song . The reinventing of an old folk legend and story , otherworldly spaces and places of the imagination open to interpretation , tight playing balanced with places open for jamming and musical interpretation , complex rhythms and diversity of style and emotions , soft / folk rock , hard rock , multi- cultural influences , and all of their other genre influences , and an incredible , inexplicable quality to it that only they can express , that sets them apart from all other bands . Live in concerts it used to take me to so many places , but listening to it and playing and singing it on keys it’s still does. My gratitude for what the music of this band has done for my life and spirit is beyond words .
Cognitive Dissonance: Sometimes people hold a core belief that is very strong. When they are presented with evidence that works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted. It would create a feeling that is extremely uncomfortable, called cognitive dissonance. And because it is so important to protect the core belief, they will rationalize, ignore and even deny anything that doesn't fit in with the core belief. If you are ready to overcome your cognitive dissonance and learn the truth of life, Google *_Truth Contest_* and read the top entry. The truth of life has been revealed, an open mind is required. This is truth the evidence suggests, truth you can and should check for yourself.
I have always always been in love with this Song either studio or Live What a tale it tells..When I was a teenager and this song came out i use to Act it All out ,while dancing..
Strategy was his strength and not disaster.. Indeed. Listening to this beauty while watching a storm manifest off the coast of Panama City beach..its so profoundly beautiful words simply fail.
sweet thanks for the complete song great vinyl i've got but a friend stole the turntable and last year is buried now - no mourning - we all got reamed without a cocktail first last year and for many years so i'm celebrating my thriving comic career and all my new friends as opposed to any complaining :) fo a minute lol - the rant about 'public servants' needing to take min wage and pass humanity tests to see if they're worthy of 'service' and the privilege of their 'power' albeit the abuse petty and demeaning and wounding to those of us who've lost vets and so much more death - of loved ones - leaving no family but one and one so be kind assume goodwill share the wealth already it ain't brain surgery dangit
although I was to young to see jerry perform my favorite song while I was growing up, I feel honored that I still have the chance to see further perform it.
I'm 13 and here from my dad. I'm a girl... but Idk.. I like this music. I'm slightly ashamed but fuck it. Who cares I'm drawing the skull for my dad, and I'm here just to get that Grateful Dead vibe ^^
Im 16 and i love this music. I grew up hearing it from my dad and used to not like it but its really grown on me. And honestly i'm proud of it, the Dead have such deep and enlightening lyrics. My point is be proud to be unique and rock on Sista! Good vibes to you
Levi Ackerman You're ashamed? Of what? Whenever I get a taste for a band that I find out very few of my peers have heard of, I get excited. And then, when I eventually do meet someone who has heard of the band, it's like a celebration, and we rejoice and we feast on the body of the band and we drink the blood of the music and there is peace across the land. Tell me what sets u apart from the rest of them that like The Weeknd? I like him, he's a great singer, very talented, and yea it's good to have stuff in common with people, but for me, liking a highly talented, not widely known musician is like being in the Illuminati....
Don't be afraid to be yourself and like what you like. You only have one go at at your life, and it is too far too short. That's what the Grateful Dead/Deadheads are all about. :)
So many songs, and versions of songs,so many shows and visions of shows, I loved it then, love it more than ever now, and when I am gone I want to hang out with Jerry cause he will be where the GOOD jams are.
The masterpiece!!! The orchestration is amazing. I cooked many...too many...times while listening to this album. It gives me flashbacks just hearing the notes.
I was a pretty big Grateful Dead fan however, I just recently heard this song for the first time and this might be my favorite. I feel like I have a lot of favorite Grateful Dead songs...
Dave, I too am 58 and what you say is so true. The world let alone the U.S., needs more Dead Heads, more peace, more love & kindness. If we could have the time back, if more of us could have turned on to a peaceful Dead existence perhaps things would be better. This music stands the test of time. I still get off on it. Magical
I'm the same age as you guys and went to a bunch of Dead shows in Chicago throughout the Seventies. I just dug the music so much and absolutely loved the band. Then I went to the Rust Never Sleeps show and became a huge Neil Young fan. Lucky for me because I got to see the Dead at their best and when they were winding down I got to follow another brilliant artist for the next 40 years. I highly recommend Neil & The Horse for more of those magical moments. Neil is still putting out new stuff, rocking very hard and in his prime. I listen to GD when I'm feeling nostalgia but when I'm ready to come back to the here and now, it's Neil. Highly, highly recommended.
March 25, 1986, The Spectrum in Philly, they did Terrapin Station start to finish. Other than my marriage and my kids being born, it was the best night of my LIFE!!!!
Happy 50Th birthday D.Paul. your musical talent was always uplifting. different from the rest. known to me unknown to where it truely belonged. On the figgin stage . love you terrapin the compass always points to.., my heart
it is so hard to hear it like this, violins swaying away like Barry manilee. but sometimes...... some fall! but at the end of the show, we just keep grinning, screaming TERRAPIN!!.
I've always been a deadhead...loved "the wheel", and it became the theme of my life. I didn't hear "Terrapin station" 'til recently....when a friend dug out a studio cassette for my antique '94 jimmy suburban. My wife and I were greatly amazed at something so great....missed for so long. It's all she plays anymore. She thinks terrapin station is a spaceport.
I would pop this tape in on a sunny day and drive to our favorite spot, probably near a slow flowing stream, be with a good buddy and some good converstation, some good weed, etc. Man, I miss those days! Thank god for Flashbacks!!
I went to see Furthur in Alpharetta GA July 3, 2011. Day before both mine and Jerry's Birthday. The band played this. My personal favorite Dead and Jerry song. The Strange Trip still moves on Furthur
This was my first Dead album and favorite to this day, title track included. The title track is so wonderful to enjoy as the great story unfolds. It's so unlike any of their albums and flows so very smoothly. And the cover art, well it couldn't be more fitting...
For a real treat check out Robert Hunters version on the Jack of Roses lp..A totally different and beautiful take on the same story..Hunter/Garcia were a great songwriting team,if you hear Hunters stripped down version,it makes you realise how deep and complex the story is,also highlights the amazing job Jerry did with the arrangement musically, its a proper masterpiece..way more than a mere rock song.

+Bill Beliakoff This brought a tear to my eye. Your father is kicking it with Jerry right now.
+Bill Beliakoff Hilarious great story!!!
cool memory..my mom hated "are you experienced" by Jimi, but i caught her enjoying it.she just couldnt understand it
What a great song by great band and I'm 23 and don't like today's bs music
+Michael catalano Hey age mate, for me this song is also the best ever
I genuinely think this is one of the most brilliant compositions of the 20th century. An honest-to-God masterpiece.
I so agree!!!!
I have stared into fires and seen doors opening....such great, visual lyrics...
my absolute favorite!

Really? Where do you live? My area had all kinds of ethnic groups represented at the shows. It was great!
Great story. The way you described the details, I can just picture the dude as Leo (played by Tommy Chong) from That 70's Show!
Mark Halassy

Playing this for my baby girl right now. Having her first grateful dead experience in Utero
mine too!! start them early!! good taste in music is so rare these days I feel like..
hey .......well said my dear.......I love hearing this kind of dialogue about those musicians who are so much a part of a good life!!!.....lates!!!

Till this day they are still one of my favorite bands. Each and every song I hear of theirs brings back so many calming memories of my mother and I when I was young and when things were perfect. Maybe your daughter will be blessed with the same.
love the Dead since im 15yrs old . they are fantastic & even better at 55
loving it
When I was a teenager I had this whole drama dance routine I would do to this song
FeelingShred I'm not a Deadhead, but you are right. That is an exceptional piece of writing and playing.
Well said!!
melonhead34 I was playing this for my wife and I noticed the similarity to my favorite band, Jethro Tull. The rhythms, instrumentation, flutes and general composition sound just like them. I like!
Amber Relph The best thing the Dead did. It's baroque textures are very English Chamber Music also, and is driven by the drum and bass arrangements I like the pseudo-mariachi bit in the middle as well.
Amber Relph :)
The Grateful Dead is THE best band that EVER was. Seen them 30 times and ALWAYS had a GRATEFUL time always. Missin u Jerry
I just heard this song for the first time on the radio. One of the most beautiful songs I've heard in my life.
This was my first Grateful Dead album and remains my favorite to this day.
Why did I wake up with this stuck in my head?
***** A reeeeaaally grate day
yer lucky
Not sure, so did I. We should make sure we are not infultrated by aliens and then stand next 2 the window Michell...oops. Darn it all, my camera's broken!
Because you woke up.
tyler D LOL
OH My! What a crispy version!! This is so tight you need not apologize man, this is a blast to have, a true treasure, thanks for the upload. And the band played on...
The movie "Music Never Stopped" brought me here, and what a great finding this band is. Cheers
That's a great movie with awesome music👌
This was my first Grateful Dead album. It somehow appeared in my record collection when I was 14. I was astounded by the lyrics. It inspired me to go to the last Dead show in my area. I never got to the concert because public transportation closed before I could make it all the way and I had to return home. Jerry died a year later. Now the music is part of me. This album feels like home. It gets better with age. It is pure magic.
lovely
My first and only GD album. Always wondered in the 80´s what GD was about and saw the cute terrapins dancing on the sleeve so I bought it without listening first. Ended up as being thankful for discovering one of the absolute best rock albums of all time. It is so special that it holds many of those 'are you experienced?' qualities to it.
Too bad for new listeners this upload is terrible audio quality.
Its is my First Grateful Dead Album
RIP, Robert Hunter. I know you're on your way to Terrapin now. Thank you for the beautiful art and inspiration.
Terrapin station one of the prettiest songs ever
i swear this song get better every time i go a couple days without listening to it.
Beautiful. Where did you get that gem from? Lol

GREAT WORDS....
Ka
So much negativity on the comments. Just relax.. enjoy the tunes.. and be happy. Who cares what some nameless face has to say over the internet? Who cares if there are poser hippys, or regular hippies, or people hating on this music.. there are so many people who love this and THAT is why this is posted. For people to love.
My mom and dad made shirts of the line "where the crickets and cicadas sing a rare and different kind of tune" and sold them at banaroo
I'm 28 , and grew up listening to the the dead. best earliest memories of my life. family influence, love.
How can one not love this? Hunter and Garcia... lyrical genius and guitarist extraodinaire .... what a story... what a song!
2:35 - One of my favorite guitar solos ever committed to tape.
ael Anthony Smith
Terrapin is an absolute masterpiece. Great music is not meant to be fully understood. Robert Hunter and Jerry together were something from another realm which many will not understand. Thats the beauty in GREAT music. Its there for you to take the reigns and paint your own picture
Never been a dead head. I always liked this song/album a lot though and had it as a kid. It seems more like Jethro Tull meets the Dead.
Good description above...met too.
This song does seem to be the Dead's most Prog work to me,and I like it !
Thank you for enabling me to revisit this track. I am conducting my orchestra on this, and the arrangement is by the great Paul Buckmaster.
LADY WITH A FAN
Let my inspiration flow
in token lines suggesting rhythm
that will not forsake me
till my tale is told and done
While the firelight's aglow
strange shadows in the flames will grow
till things we've never seen
will seem familiar
Shadows of a sailor forming
winds both foul and fair all swarm
down in Carlisle he loved a lady
many years ago
Here beside him stands a man
a soldier by the looks of him
who came through many fights
but lost at love
While the storyteller speaks
a door within the fire creaks
suddenly flies open
and a girl is standing there
Eyes alight with glowing hair
all that fancy paints as fair
she takes her fan and throws it
in the lion's den
"Which of you to gain me, tell
will risk uncertain pains of Hell?
I will not forgive you
if you will not take the chance"
The sailor gave at least a try
the soldier being much too wise
strategy was his strength
and not disaster
The sailor coming out again
the lady fairly lept at him
that's how it stands today
you decide if he was wise
The storyteller makes no choice
soon you will not hear his voice
his job is to shed light
and not to master
Since the end is never told
we pay the teller off in gold
in hopes he will come back
but he cannot be bought or sold
TERRAPIN STATION
Inspiration, move me brightly
light the song with sense and color,
hold away despair
More than this I will not ask
faced with mysteries dark and vast
statements just seem vain at last
some rise, some fall, some climb
to get to Terrapin
Counting stars by candlelight
all are dim but one is bright:
the spiral light of Venus
rising first and shining best,
From the northwest corner
of a brand-new crescent moon
crickets and cicadas sing
a rare and different tune
Terrapin Station
in the shadow of the moon
Terrapin Station
and I know we'll be there soon
Terrapin - I can't figure out
Terrapin - if it's an end or the beginning
Terrapin - but the train's got its brakes on
and the whistle is screaming: TERRAPIN
AT A SIDING
While you were gone
these spaces filled with darkness
The obvious was hidden
With nothing to believe in
the compass always points to Terrapin
The sullen wings of fortune beat like rain
You're back in Terrapin for good or ill again
For good or ill again
Until my tale is done
Thank you 🙏🏾
WOOOOOOOOW, such an amazing song.
15 minutes of pure magic, PUT DOWN YOUR MAINSTREAM MUSIC AND LISTEN TO THIS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!!
this is some 17th century, Bill Shakespeare story tellin type shit. great fucking tune...
i love that you called him bill
Summer of 1996 and 1997, one of my most listened to songs.
Those who weren't struggling to make it through the hell of the 1970s can't really understand the deep spiritual healing the Dead offered then, when much of the good of the 1960s was dying or dead and much of the bad was increasing. This album and "Shakedown Street" helped some of us make it through that time.
Well said! lived it. Been their. Just another old rocker; 55 and am dam proud of it! ~M~
Being at the shows healed me, sure as shit it did. Miss it allot and I could really use that wonderful magic about now
Just one of there greatest song using the band and a whole orchestra in this song. One of my favorites I listen to it each day.
im not a big dead head fan, but I really like their music. it's so calming whenever you're stressed.
6:34
I absolutely love those riffs and melodies.
This song definitely has hints of frank zappa - bloody love it. I've just started getting into grateful dead and im so, so grateful!
I think it also has hints of Gentle Giant and King Crimson....even some Yes!
Larry Coryell, too.
You mean those riffs at 9:21
You nailed it. I love the layering of music that both the Dead and Zappa have in their sound. I routinely come back to listen to these two great artists/bands from time to time.
I missed this group in the 60's, found them and never will loose them again. Better late than never. Took me back to the place where life was good.
The best thing about turtles is they don't talk, they just listen to the frogs and the crickets play their songs. Happy are they who listen and don't speak. Is there really anything to add to this magic? simply be silent and enjoy.
Oh the Turtle of Enormous Girth, Upon His Shell He Holds the Earth...Stephen King "Dark Tower Series"

My Friend, Everything living draws strength for they who pass. Our time in this life is short, our legacy can be quite long...if wisdom guides our thoughts and Grace humbles our soul; then, and only then, might we softly offer words.
Yes Friend, Being humble is the quiet wisdom of the soul giving us grace and peace. Many seek it but it comes to those who do not.

My friend, I find it has grown inside me. Holding others with an open hand, lifting them up, never clutching them to stay. Freedom offers strength.
Love the key & time changes. Shows their true musical prowess.
Amazing song. The section between 6:35 and 8:45 is as triumphant as a Beethoven symphony.
Best studio cut of anything they ever did, both music and the phenomenal lyrics.
And live....Oh My GOD...that seeming endless coda to fadeout at the end that you wanted to last forever, as it just got better and better. So many memories....
You are SO missed, Jerry. RIP.
I was just in the shower and started singing "inspiration! move me brightly...etc" thats what brought me here.
What kind of shampoo do you use?
Dominique D'Amico wow! I was listening to the song and reading comments, the exact moment your comment appeared this section of the song started, crazy coincidences happen with crazy music lol cheers

Such a magical sound! I love and miss, Jerry! I'm so grateful to have had you in my world.
grateful dead was inspiration and will never die. god bless all the deadheads out there!
Right on. Raquel!
Raquel Duehlmeier
Fukingroovin! The grateful dead were truly,,, innovative ,,, outside the box band! They proved it again on the 4th of July... they showed this on the back drop while they played their encore...
www.dead.net/features/50th-anniversary/us-blues-empire-state-building-takeover
cut and paste... and turn it up to 11! Peace!
Thank you for posting! I just listened to this track for the first time in ages (I have the LP, but haven't played a vinyl album since 2003 or so!)
Beautiful.
I am not a Deadhead. I grew up and suffered on the streets of NYC. I don;t know what this song means. A friend who was passing through my life played this song once or twice while we were getting drunk and high, Clearly it resonated with me as I'm listening to it now twenty years later. Still don't understand it.
lmfao. either way.. it worked
it's just about the journey of life I think. various opportunities we are presented with and the choices we make. but that ultimately we end up at the same place. maybe it's an afterlife. maybe it's just death. that's my take anyway. no idea if that was the intent lol
Did you used to hang out in Strawberry Fields?
Don't worry, you will :)
I just reread this. Really awesome. Much love to you all
Listened again today, same blessing and message....we are loved and have great value! you're obligated to spread His message of joy to children of all ages, give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those....
"A soldier from the looks of him, who came through many fights but lost at love"
love this line. many troops come home from war only to have their family torn apart
thanx for the upload. a unique, one of a kind combination of lyrics and composition. been listening to it forever, never tiring of its beauty, truth, soothing power...
I am not a Dead fan but this song is beautiful!
this song is gorgeous! Oh my god, the climax just brought me to tears!
Bottom line folks, If you dont get it ,you just dont get it !!! A rare and different tune.....
..
smoke some weed then try again.
Yup...either you get it or you don't...very well said
Too many top 40 and American Idol fans
If you don't open the door and go through, no one to blame but yourself!
The door is inside your heart, it leads to the light of lights... GOD is it's name, so much more to gain in life comes thru this door!!! the door to so much more! LOVE IS IT.... don't be left behind. You will kick yourself like crazy!!!! we LOVE You
Too all who don’t understand, It-don’t matter to me? Been their. Just another old rocker; 55 and I am dam proud of it! ~M~ should have been their…
My senior year in high school and Terrapin Station made me a Dead Head forever. Played it till the needle wore. 68 now and it still brings me back.
192 Dead shows, 22 states, 3 countries.....I get it...happy trails to all that dig it
5, 3, 1.
45/15/2 I had ticks for the Toronto show the year Jerry passed. The show was like 3 months away.
Long may you run on still geoff
Loved this over 20 years ago. Love it now. Exquisite.
Where do you hope Terrapin is? We are all gonna end up at Terrapin Station. The whistle is screaming its the end of the line.
Not sure if it's the end or beginnig. could be birth I guess.
terrapin is a state of mind
Looking forward to a titanic Terrapin tonight at Soldier Field #GD50
If you come to a dead song to cause controversy and start riots, why are you here? Just enjoy the music.
+Pink Floyd I am ready, I stand alone without beliefs!
+Pink Floyd How pretentious.
wake up! be self aware!
Who gives a fuck.
Cult recruiters are getting creative I see.
I have always always been in love with this Song either studio or Live
What a tale it tells..When I was a teenager and this song came out i use to Act it All out ,while dancing..
Tripping station
amen lol
+Rene Mesones Good one
+Rene Mesones Heroin Station
+Rene Mesones because I heard jerry first tried heroin the year they were recording this
Strategy was his strength and not disaster.. Indeed. Listening to this beauty while watching a storm manifest off the coast of Panama City beach..its so profoundly beautiful words simply fail.
sweet thanks for the complete song great vinyl i've got but a friend stole the turntable and last year is buried now - no mourning - we all got reamed without a cocktail first last year and for many years so i'm celebrating my thriving comic career and all my new friends as opposed to any complaining
:)
fo a minute lol - the rant about 'public servants' needing to take min wage and pass humanity tests to see if they're worthy of 'service' and the privilege of their 'power' albeit the abuse petty and demeaning and wounding to those of us who've lost vets and so much more death - of loved ones - leaving no family but one and one so be kind
assume goodwill
share the wealth already
it ain't brain surgery dangit
although I was to young to see jerry perform my favorite song while I was growing up, I feel honored that I still have the chance to see further perform it.
Good vibes to you
Thanks! Same to you too
Levi Ackerman nothing to be ashamed of!
2002, found original lot of this in UP, MI thrift store with a dozen more Dead albums and a turntable to play them all on! This was. favorite.
this music is so good it makes me want to play with my genitals. Just kidding, calm down.
So many songs, and versions of songs,so many shows and visions of shows, I loved it then, love it more than ever now, and when I am gone I want to hang out with Jerry cause he will be where the GOOD jams are.
the best dead.period.(this record) Plain and Simply a great record.
+Dave Graczkowski Yup !
Best studio album by far
The masterpiece!!! The orchestration is amazing. I cooked many...too many...times while listening to this album. It gives me flashbacks just hearing the notes.
The first time I heard this song I was tripping face at the concert woohoo
And I bet it was one of the best times of your life...
a fine description of the creative muse, gracefully rendered...
That's a beautiful song.
Quite simply, this song gives me goose bumps every time I hear it, studio or live.
I was a pretty big Grateful Dead fan however, I just recently heard this song for the first time and this might be my favorite. I feel like I have a lot of favorite Grateful Dead songs...
Man nothing ever beat this song right here.. ugh yet I want to hear others like it
Dave, I too am 58 and what you say is so true.
Thanks so much for putting this here.
It's great to be able to hear it straight thru.
it is so hard to hear it like this, violins swaying away like Barry manilee. but sometimes...... some fall! but at the end of the show, we just keep grinning, screaming TERRAPIN!!.
Very well designed. One of the best songs ever.
She thinks terrapin station is a spaceport.
my fav could listen to it 1000 more times
I'm glad youtube now allows longer videos.
Thank you for uploading this.
The brilliance of the last four minutes!..
This was my first Dead album and favorite to this day, title track included. The title track is so wonderful to enjoy as the great story unfolds. It's so unlike any of their albums and flows so very smoothly. And the cover art, well it couldn't be more fitting...
truly one of the most majestic pieces of music ever conceived...
What can I say? Our college station up here in Duluth,MN used to have GD hour every Sat. but they discontinued it, oh well, we still got YT!! THANX!!
