- One of the most often asked questions is what are the best catfish baits to use to catch catfish in America. Fishing for catfish requires the right tackle and the right catfish bait. Picking the best catfish bait varies with where you are fishing in America. In this video I talk about using gizzard shad for catfish bait, bluegill for catfish bait, chicken for catfish bait and using nightcrawlers for catfish bait.

My fishing buddy wraps sewing thread around chicken liver the first time I saw him do it it was on the Mississippi river. I laughed at him and told him no way that would work will he made me eat my words. He caught 3 to 4 fish to every 1 I caught and I was using mona and Asian carp for bait. I never would of believed how will it works if I would not of seen it with my own eyes now I keep a sewing kit on my boat always. As always great video keep up the great work.

We use hotdogs with minced garlic also and they work really well. Cut bluegill is a favorite up north and we use it often.
I will say I absolutely agree with your bait choices.
Currently live by Lake Lanier but grew up on Lake Sinclair in Eatonton, Ga. Grandpa taught me how to use a cast net by the time I was 12. Very effective for bream, shad, and the ocean for bait fish.
I’ve caught some keepers catfish, crappie, and bass occasionally too in the by mistake.
Skipjack aren't just west of the Appalachian mountains, we get them regularly in the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers. They seem to be almost everywhere. Great bait choices, those baits are my top 5 as well. Large creek chubs are great too. Just much more work to collect.
Those rivers are both in the Ohio river drainage system which is west of the Appalachian mountains.
Been using cooked medium size shrimp and garlic powder with huge results! I freeze what I don’t use, and stays on the hook great.

Here in the northwest where I live big grasshoppers are super hot! And just as hot when you can find an outbreak of them are Mormon crickets! The fish go insane over them! I have caught so many big catfish in only an hour, l had to stop fishing! I use a 2 oz egg sinker above a two way swivel. 30 inches of the same line below, topped off with a number one Owner hook! Sharp as hell, and very rarely lose a fish!

White perch is my go to. Easy to catch and catfish love em.
Skipjack have surprised me never used them when I was young. But any big fish I've fished for love them. Ive caught huge drum, lake and shovel nose sturgeon, and of course striper, and all the big cats. I'd bet money muskie would like them to, but alive I would think.

My local butcher sells chicken hearts for roughly $6/#. I cut them in half lengthwise then put 10 half hearts into a ziplock baggie and freeze them until the morning needed. They stay on the hook well and work great.
From Romania exclusively to America, the top two cat fish baits: fen cricket and a 🐛 worm by the size of the small hand finger that grows inside the willow. Eats it inside…all willows by the river I used to grow up were cut by fishermen back in the ‘90’s. Now we only have bushes. No more willows.
Nice video and unfortunately for me I haven't fished for catfish beyond the local lakes and rivers in my area along the upper texas coast. From my experience of nearly 70 years of fishing I've found where you fish, type of catfish, size of catfish all determines which bait works the best. The closest lake near me produces good catfish up to three or so pounds on nightcrawlers or fresh dead shrimp. A lake a bit farther produces more catfish using threadfin shad ( live or dead). Local small lakes give me better results on beef liver and it stays on the hook reasonably well. In slow flowing streams blood bait will pull in lots of small catfish. For larger catfish in the lakes live perch or even large brackish water mud minnows work really well. I've also seen some fair sized catfish caught on live crayfish. Trolling for striped bass with hellbenders and pet spoons I've even picked up catfish that hit the spoon. For patient fishermen live minnows work well for medium sized catfish in most areas. In other words catfish aren't really all that picky here but the right bait will ensure better action. My summer hot weather fishing has dwindled to night time fishing for catfish and I chum with milo to pull in catfish and then use shrimp for bait. Shrimp stays on the hook well, doesn't make your hands as messy, and deffinitly draws catfish. When I first married my wife had never been fishing so I took her up to a nearby lake at night, anchored the boat in a couple of feet of water fishing a nearby channel in the lake. Dead shrimp and each cast was quickly met with a fish trying to take the rod away from you. No need to set the hook just reel in your fish. After my wife had caught half a dozen or so quickly she turned to me and said I don't know why people say fishing is so difficult.
Chicken and liver and night crawlers are great bait for eaters or fun size. Skip jack by far is the best bait for the trophy fish. Live and cut bluegill are second best in my times fishing with them!

I have used feeder mice or fuzzy alive I have had some of the best luck using them and it don't take cats long to bite
here in Georgia spotted bass are a problem on some lakes. 12-13"- no size limits - ever cut them up and use them?

HI Dieter, Man I really like your videos. Dieter, I fish Lake Glenville. It used to be Thorpe Res. . It is gin clear most of the year. I have only caught one catfish so far from this lake, locally called the "dead sea" because it is so tricky to fish. the cat I caught was 29 inches long and delicious. I caught it on some Bass gill and throat meat. I have fished many times now with garlic chicken and have not had so much as a bite. Please give me encouragement. What would you use? thank you, George.
My Grandfather used to cut my grandma's old nylons into squares about 1 and a half inches square . He kept some in his pocket when fishing and used them to tie up chicken liver sacks . They held the liver and were tough enough for hooking . Worked like a charm .

How many times can I refreeze these bait fish before the scent gets foul for the cats? I buy frozen shad and take 3-4 out with me. Sure they thaw out quick. I have been refreezing but they sure don't smell fresh

Most of the lakes in so cal. Seem to only catch cats on shrimp, nightcrawl 9:59 ers, or mackerel.
Here in Michigan it’s illegal to throw a cast net in inland lakes so shad are hard to get panfish are legal bait if caught on hook and line by legal method we can use chicken or worms so I’m good ha ha-smelt is also a good bait !

I've had luck with chicken gizzards. They stay on the hook really well.

Agreed! One of the best channel cat baits out there. Very tough and they ooze scent when you hook’em.
I heard that a sponge covered in peanut butter would also work as catfish bait.... What do you think? or have you ever tried it?
Here in CA state is illegal to use bluegill as a bait.
I have tried chicken...both plain and with jello. I have also tried chicken gizzards which sem to be bite sized and tough, but they do not seem to be very good bait. Anybody else tried gizzards?
Here in Maryland, peelers are the king of bait. Ain’t nothing in these waters that don’t love peeler.
What is a peeler from maryland never heard of it we mostly use bluegill or shad
@@mattp2391 Peelers are Blue Crabs in the molt stage right before shedding. It’s the step right before they become soft crabs. The soft crab has formed underneath the shell but they haven’t come out of the shell yet.
@@DitchP1ckle where do you get your peelers from? I got some from Walmart the other day and it wouldn’t stay on.
Just so you know, In Indiana using live gizzard shad or carp is illegal. They are native to Indiana, but they can mess up some fisheries and nature preserves so Indiana has made them illegal so they are only allowed in areas where there already established populations. These will be posted on info boards. But any legal - *hint on legal* - fish you catch is okay to use as bait. But the DNR does ask that if you catch an exotic species of fish, before you use it as bait please take a picture and measure it then forward the info to the local district fishery biologist.
I use Bloody Red Steak or Red Roast buy a Brisket and turn it into a Roast cut it into Quarter's and use it as fish bait
The perch(sunfish) are amazing baits. When I was younger and my grandfather dad and I would spend the weekend on the lower Colorado river and we’d almost solely use live sunfish for drop lines and trot lines, especially for Flatheads(yellacats). Though 9/10 times we’d catch channels and blues, some channels into the low teens.
Live bait is prohibited in the state of California. I use dip bait, Anchovies, Sardines, liver, and different flavored catfish dough balls.
California is so lame, in so many ways.
One place Skipjack is not legal is Santee Cooper..

Using live bait on rod and feel is legal. Not legal on set hooks (trot lines, limb lines, etc)

How do you keep them on the hook. Every time I try them they won’t stay on and I’m not even fishing big water or current.

I fish the Patomac river in DC. It’s Livers. I catch them so fast I can’t leave my rod. Thighs and breast are less messy, but not even close. Everyone knows this. But if you want to be lazy and catch some fish it’s fine. J know my guy knows this

Use pantyhose for liver. Dollar tree for a buck a pack then just cut pieces and tie it off.

I love when I totally agree with an expert… Plus he’s telling me what I keep punishing myself with… I hate using chicken livers.. First of all, they are usually leaking when you pick them up off the shelf at your local grocery store. Then, once you open them you realize there’s more liquid in the container than needed… It actually seemed like the chicken liver suppliers have figured out a way to put more liquid volume into a container than it can physically hold.. 🤮.. Anyway, thanks for the tips.. specifically the one on using chicken breasts or thighs.. 💯🫡
