It always looks like you're doing the impossible when I watch your videos but starting from a dock is probably the most impossible looking thing I've seen you do. Thanks for another fun video.
I wish I were better at dockstarts. I still wipe out more than I land it! There’s some folks who are amazingly good at dock starts and even done them in swimming pools! Thanks for watching. I hope I’ve ignited your passion for human powered flight!
Really good instructions. What is the smallest wing you think it is possible for dock start? Does one have to have a 60-70 cm mast or 100 cm would be better?
I like 60-75cm. Not too big that you feel like you’re foiling on stilts and not too small that you risk breaching the wing at a moments notice. I think a 190lb person could dock start a 1400sqcm high aspect ratio wing and a 2100sqcm low aspect ratio wing. With great skill, I bet someone at 190lb could start at even smaller wing
Thanks for this I have a pool- but it’s only 33-35 ft long Do you think it’s feasible to learn a dock start in a pool? I realize I’d be at the end in no time But I’m terrible at pumping and the only time I can work on pumping is when we have waves- so I have long dry spells where I can’t work on anything Little worried about banging the wing on the bottom but my Armstrong has held up pretty well so far …or banging my head- but I’m more worried about the wing
😂 yes that should be enough room. How deep is the water? I’d say it needs to be at least 2m unless you’re ok hitting wing against bottom of pool. can you learn pumping behind a jet ski / boat?
Great video, thanks! Quick question, I do have the foil slingshot 99 with a fanatic board 6'11 for wingfoiling. I am 87 kg for 1m90. I would like to buy a board for dockstarting. I am considering a board wide to avoid touching the wing then I feel. Do you have any board recommendation? Do you think I could find a board that I would be able to surf on small waves as well? That would be the best since I come more from surfing then foiling at the beginning! Thank an lot!
I use a 3’6” Dwarfcraft from slingshot. Love this board because it’s so small/light, but it’s great for behind a boat and pumping / dock starting. Wouldn’t work great on the ocean as it’s 11L! I’d try a small board (less than 4’8”) that’s 30-40L. Would be nice for starting behind the boat. I’m looking at a ride engine escape pod right now as a possible board to serve the need of surfing small ocean waves and for use with my dock bungee start (I need a more buoyant board for super small wings)
@@WakeThief sweet thanks for your replay! I didn't know this brand, I'll have a look! You probably know it already but I was having a look at freedom foil boards, they have a team rider pretty impressive and boards seems nice as well (as far as I know) thanks 👍
Another excellent video :) I've never tried the sport. I would like to someday. Question I have is do I first learn to foil via a tow start or can I learn how to foil by starting with a dock start? Lets assume I have a dock and the correct foil for me and the conditions I will be foiling in.
Thank you! I’d recommend learning behind a boat or jet ski and clocking 10+ hours before starting to learn from the dock. That time will let you get good balance and learn pumping which is necessary after you land during a dock start. When you’re ready to get into the sport, I’d be happy to help you figure out equipment, etc based on your weight and what you’d like to do. Pls reach out when ready. Wakethief@icloud.com
Hi, Looked a lot this video! Was just wondering if you had any tips on when you look at what (dock, feet, board, horizon) ? Peope who surf say eye direction is very important for balance. But on dock start landing your feet at the right place seems critial so I focus a lot on this...
Irwin - That's a great question. Before taking off, I look to see wing is just under the surface. Then I look at the board when I'm taking off, and then once I've landed my feet where I want I shift focus to the look at the water just ahead of the board to be sure I keep the right elevation while pumping . Send vids over and maybe I can help you. wakethief@icloud.com
@@WakeThief Thank you, very clear, on the video, it looks like you look far away where you are aiming to go, as if the hight of the foil was instinctive for you. Bit it is not the case, at least when you learn :)
@@WakeThief Hi, I emailed you a couple of weeks ago but did not get any reply. No harm taken if you are busy but just though it was weird as you always reply fast here.
Do you find that jumping off of your front foot is necessary? I'm also goofy foot but jumping off my right foot feels like it's going to be awkward. Of all the videos I've found I only see one who jumps off his back foot but he does make it work. Whichever I go with I know it's going to take a lot of practice and a lot of tries!
I actually had to rewatch the video because I didn't believe that I was jumping off my front foot ... I was! I think you should do whatever feels most comfortable. I do know that landing with back foot first is key. Great catch and thanks for the question.
Certainly. High aspect ratio wing of over 7, with an area that’s good for your weight. 1300-1500sqcm for 60-80kg, 1500-2000sqcm for 80+kg. ua-cam.com/video/yUgfmvJLGy0/v-deo.html
Yes. It really depends on the wing. If the wing had enough lift at low speed to support your weight, this works. Near the end of the wing I tried it here. A big mast helps: ua-cam.com/video/PLbul8IqEZA/v-deo.html
@@WakeThief If you were to set up the dock for the 2-foot jump, what would be optimal for an i99 wing? What length Slingshot mast? And how high off the water would the dock deck be--height of board relative to deck? Jumping up or down? I would build a "starting block" to ideal height. Remember we're talking newbie here :) And it looks easier than run or bungee. Is it, with right setup? Thanks...you rock!
The 99 is a good wing. I’d go with a longer mast, maybe 30-36” as it will let you start higher in the air. I’d recommend you make the dock 3 ft off the water so you don’t have to jump up. Pls check out Dominic Hoskyns on UA-cam. He starts from a boat or a ladder and is very good at the starts where you don’t run.

Soo good man!!
I have axis 920 + 440 for winging I wight 75kg, can I practice dock start with this?
Yes, I think you can pull it off. Would be much easier with a foil with an area of >2000sqcm however, so more like the 1020 or 1120.

Like wide and thin ones, or fat and short ones?

Awesome
You really need to try the Armstrong 2400 with 300 tail. Seriously
Thank you, James. This foil has been suggested to me, but I haven't tried it. Thank you.
