- Alexa found a cancer-causing chemical (methylene chloride aka dichloromethane) in her RO water purified by the Waterdrop A1 Reverse Osmosis Hot Cold Water Dispenser. There was also a second group of chemicals (xylenes) found in the purified water which have been linked to causing nervous system damage. Alexa tells the full story in her video - make sure to watch till the very end!

Our Testing & Lab Testing
The product or products covered in this video were tested under real-life conditions and on our specific water supply. As such, lab-testing was limited to those contaminants present in our water supply and at their respective concentrations. A product may perform differently when used on a different water supply. Furthermore, lab testing for water contaminant levels is subject to variabilities and inaccuracies. Our test results may not represent the product’s performance in other areas or under different conditions.
100% reduction means a contaminant could not be detected above the minimum detection level.

This is a pretty significant issue. Very unfortunate. It's great that you suggested others at the end.
content quality is amazing. thank you for your work!
Thank you for being honest ❤
I was thinking about getting this exact system. Thank you
Thanks for saving me, I was about to buy one! 🤗 Thankgod I do my research.
Hello, thanks for your video. I cannot understand why such products are release with this kind of problems...
Thank you for this and your other excellent videos! It seems as though the concentration of the chemicals decreases over time and I wouldn't be surprised if they disappear completely after a while.
I purchased a CoreRO C1H just before it was discontinued. When I turned it on, I saw that the initial rinse of the RO filter created very foamy waste water. Thanks to your video, I was aware of the potential problem and flushed the device three times. I now handle it in such way that I discard the first new filtered water after a prolonged pause (e.g., after the night). Of course, I can't say whether this is sufficient, but I'm not going crazy about it. I wouldn't be surprised if this problem also affects many other RO systems, as there probably aren't that many manufacturers of RO membranes ...
Again, thank you for your great work! Greetings from Germany!
Glad you like our videos. You can check our latest video where we tested 10 countertop ROs. Only very few had issues with chemicals. But I would agree that you are probably right: The chemicals should eventually vanish.
Thank you for your work in this area. I just purchased a simpure Y7. Perfect timing. 😂 Did that allow any VOC? Also the report you read said as the membrane wears out it releases VOC ?
We tested the SimPure Y7 for more than 40 different VOCs, and none of them were detected in the filtered water. As for your second question, we're not 100% sure how the 2 chemicals ended up in the filtered water. First, our theory was that the chemicals originate from the membrane manufacturing process. But Waterdrop said they come from a disinfectant that the A1 uses after several running cycles.

I tested my water and it's high in nitrates. The modern castle video and another tester showed the clearly filterd pitcher does not remove nitrates in water . After running my water thru a clearly filtered and a simpure I sent it to be tested. Simpure removed the nitrates clearly filtered did not. Yet clearly filtered said there lab tests show it removes nitrates. The only way to know is to test your own water after you run it thru a system.. Your channel has been helpful. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Rob. We're doing a big review of water filter pitchers right now including lab testing for nitrites/nitrates. The Clearly Filtered is part of this review just like many other pitchers.
Thank you for sharing!❤
Great Videos! Keep em coming! Looking forward to the Waterdrop N1 or K19 reviews. I'm still undecided between a Waterdrop or The RKIN U1 Countertop RO.
We haven't tested any of these yet so I can't really provide any advice at this point.
Hi Alexa, thanks so much for this. I own a k19 and I’m now concerned, having using it for 5 months. Have you tested yet? I’ll stop using it in the meantime
No, haven' tested this one yet. I've added it to our list!
Great Video. Do you use ETR laboratories for all of your testing?
Usually, yes!
Wow, great great video! Thanks for sharing! What do you use for your family's water needs?
Glad you liked it. :) I'm using the Clearly Filtered under-the-sink filter.
@@boswater6065 hmmm...I'll have to take a look at the Clearly Filtered. Currently, we have the waterdrop G3 ro system and I am concerned with it putting nanoplastics in the water. I'm thinking one of the stainless steel gravity ones might be able to solve it. Berkey seems kind of questionable with the whole lawsuit and refusal to do nsf though. Any recommendations for a gravity system?
We are working on a big video for the best/most popular gravity water filters right now. But it'll take a few weeks until publishing. What I can tell you from our research so far is that with this kind of system, there doesn't seem to be a single model that has official NSF certifications for a considerable amount of contaminants. What some companies have done is their own testing against NSF standards, though.
@@boswater6065 I will keep an eye out for the video. Thanks again!
Thank you we are using aqua true
Perhaps the disinfectant tank is contained within the filter and would get replenished when the filter is replenished? If so, they could fix the problem by redesigning the filters.
Good thinking. I'm just not sure how the system would make it so that the disinfectant is only released every several running cycles as stated by Waterdrop.
Thank you for your work. Looking forward the RO comparison. Would be very interesting also to compare the micro and nano plastic content after RO depuration. Particularly if we consider that the 2024 NIH study on plastic particles in bottled water proved that many of those particles derive from water purification processes
I agree. Unfortunately, testing for mircoplastics is extremely expensive. And testing for nanoplastics isn't even an option that labs offer at this point.
Based on the study you guys linked, it's more than likely that the chemicals are from the manufacturing process. Methylene chloride seems to be prevalent in membrane/polymer manufacturing, and it's either remaining in the membrane material or not removed properly as part of quality control. Have you looked at other RO membranes? It seems this might be a widespread issue and not limited to Waterdrop.
We tested about a dozen RO systems so far and found a few more with issues.
Would this apply to the G3P600? I ordered one last week before seeing this and had planned to install it today but am now planning to return it. I watched several of your videos and enjoyed them. Thanks for your help.
It could apply to it, but we haven't tested it yet. We will hopefully have a video on that in the near future.
Thank you
Yep, never depend on private water firms. HIgh-quality, highly-tested public water supplies are the way to go, especially through a refrigerated, NSF-certified pitcher like ZeroWater. There's no TDS of 7+ or EPA-prohibited levels of contaminants after that.
I'm not sure what you mean by private water firm, but ZeroWater is one too. Also, most public water supplies meet EPA standards. The question is, are set standards high enough?
Alexa, thank you very much
You're welcome 😊
Can you guys please do a review of the Pro One water filters?
We are finishing up a big review featuring the 11 top water filter pitchers, and the ProOne is one of them!
Thank you for this!!
I have a Waterdrop G3. Do you think it is overkill to buy the Waterdrop Remineralization filter and combine that with the Waterdrop UV light?
Based on our testing, we're not sure if those UV lights really help. The lab data still shows total bacteria in the water. So while these bacteria aren't harmful, the UV light doesn't seem to kill them all - far from it. I think adding remineralization to RO is always a good idea.
@@boswater6065 UV will not remove or clear bacteria, but will break their DNA so they will no longer be able to replicate. In addition, unless you operate in lab biosafety cabinet and use autoclaved container, you will always get bacteria contamination.
Thanks for sharing. I'm aware that UV doesn't remove bacteria but simply prevents them from multiplying. But I assumed that the test for total bacteria count is some kind of growth test(?), so allowing the bacteria population to grow for a certain time. If that is true I assumed there should be a difference between UV and non-UV-treated water, but I might be totally wrong...
I doubt it was a growth test, more likely a test to find out whether the bacteria is present. Total Coliform and E coli. are certainly detrimental, but bacteria in drinking water are not all necessarily harmful, so it is also important to understand what kinds of bacteria are in there. A lot of variations could contribute to the final test results so please keep these in mind when interpret them, particularly when all data are from a single source (i.e. a private test company).
Thanks for sharing!
Looking forward to the outcome. Any update on when is it going to be released?
Which outcome are you referring to?
Thanks. If possible can you test the waterdrop k19? to see if it affects all their RO machines potentially or just the A1.
I've added it to the list. We're testing their C1H system really soon, which is a countertop RO system. So this might show that it only affects the A1 or maybe other systems, too.
Search Waterdrop K19 on youtube, I saw several youtubers have tested K19
Hi, I tested the water with a simple home kit and didn’t find anything. Wouldn’t such a high concentration of those two substances be captured even by a simple home test kit? Perhaps not specifically but wouldn’t something look off even on those kits?
Did you test for those 2 substances specifically? I doubt that it is possible with a home test kit. We are talking ppb (parts per billion).
@@boswater6065 no, I didn’t test those chemicals specifically. I’ll stop using the k19 for now, looking forward to seeing your review of that. I wrote to Water drop asking for clarification and reassurance, I’ll let you know what they reply.
Can you please test the Bluevua RO system.
We did and we will publish a video on that soon!
yikes... great review. Is there a stainless steel RO unit that is worth looking into? What about all these plastic components leaching over time?
Thank you. There are a few stainless steel ROs, but at least those that I know are only partially stainless steel. So for example, they still use plastic filter cartridges, so not really ideal. There're also systems like the AquaTru Carafe that collect the filtered water in a glass container. But again, plastic components are used, too. It's always food-grade plastic, but I understand your concerns.
Can you test the waterdrop D6? We just bought this system!
I've added it to our list!
I liked this video. I must be water nerd. LOL 🤣
I am searching the best undersink RO system and Waterdrop X series was under my radar....Now, I dont feel comfortable to purchase X series. What is your recommendation of undersink RO systems?
We always used to recommend the Waterdrop G3 series, but never had any lab testing done. We are working on a larger under sink RO comparison video, but it'll take a while to complete. Sorry, this is all I have right now.
Please post or reply with the website for the lab you used to test the water so we can pay to have our water tested too! Thank you!
Sure! We used the Premium Water Test Kit by ETR Laboratories: etrlabs.com/product/premium-water-test/
Would you test their new K19?
It's on our list!
Do the water drop RO under sink system have the same issues?
We will test this asap.
Great question. I just bought their G3P800 and am concerned if it has the same issue.
The fact that the A1 adds a chemical to the water and the company doesn't tell us is scary. I really want to buy the k19s model. Do you know how I can find out if the k19 model has the same harmful setup?
Please remember that this is all just a theory. But if our findings are indeed correct, I think Waterdrop simply didn't know. But they've reached out to us recently and took their A1 model off the market for the time being. They said they are doing their own testing right now. The K19 is another reverse osmosis system, and our theory was that this might have to do with the reverse osmosis membrane leaching the chemical. So yes, it could be possible that other RO systems are affected, too, but we did NOT test for this yet.
does this affect the waterdrop G3 from your previous review?
Unfortunately, we haven't lab-tested that one yet. But we're planning to do so asap.
Please let us know I´ve bought it , and using that water for my baby@@boswater6065
I´ve been giving Waterdrop G3 water to my newborn , please do the test for it, if you want help funding the test let me know
It will be at least a couple of weeks before we can do the test. So if this feels really urgent to you, then maybe better conduct your own testing. This is the test kit we are using: etrlabs.com/product/volatile-organic-compounds/ - there isn't anything that can go wrong really, as long as you follow the instructions precisely. Just make sure to flush the system for a minute or so before taking the water sample so that you avoid TDS creep.
@@boswater6065 looking forward to this. Have you looked into testing nanoplastics in water with the RO systems? Most of them are built with plastic but it's been recently identified that this is a big issue with nanoplastics being linked to heart attack, stroke and early death. A quick Google search shows you the recent data.
This is so scary to see. I was just about to order the k19 unit from water drop. Now I’m worried about poisoning my family.
You might be interested to learn that Waterdrop is looking into the issue. They are testing the exact same unit we tested. We will publish an update as soon as possible.
Where do you send your water in for testing?
etrlabs.com/product/premium-water-test/
Have you tested the Sans water purifier?
No, we never even heard of it. But I've checked it out and it's on our list!
Looks like they stopped selling this? Can't find it anywhere suddenly.
Correct. This was confirmed by Waterdrop. They told as they are looking into the issue which I think is the right approach.
thank you! What RO (under the sink)water system you recommend? I'm temporary using Brita elite water pitcher + brita faucet filter.
We used to recommend the Waterdrop G3 for tankless and the Aquasana OptimH2O for tank-based. But the Aquasana OptimH2O isn't being made anymore and we never tested the G3 in a lab. So I don't really want to make a recommendation at this point in time, also because we are comparing about a dozen under sink RO systems right now including lab testing. But it will be at least several weeks until the video comes out.
@@boswater6065 Are you testing more countertop ones soon? If so, I'd love to get a timeline on the results. We desperately need to buy one as the machines we usually use were broken into and no longer work, but I really want to make an informed decision. Thank you for doing this, there isn't enough information about these!
We are shooting a top X countertop RO video right now. Will release as soon as possible - hopefully within the next 2 weeks if there aren't any bigger issues.
What system you have tested and recommended?
We will publish a video featuring the top countertop ROs really soon (the AquaTru came out on top). As for under sink ROs, we are working on a video on that topic as well, but no lab data yet, so I'm hesitating to make a recommendation at this point.
isn't the carbon filter supposed to captured those VOCs?
Yes, but if our lab results are correct, we assume those VOCs were added after the carbon filter.
@@boswater6065 I mean there's a post RO carbon filter for most systems, maybe this watedrop system doesn't have that?
Correct.
Why not get multipure. That's supposed to be the best on the market. Stainless steel, nsf certified and only change the filter once a year
We haven't tested this one yet.
Please test waterdrop x12
This one is on our list and we're testing it asap!
I just realized that the WD A1 system as well as the WD-A1-RO filters were both discontinued, as in they're both out of stock in the WaterDrop site as well as Amazon. I wonder if this has anything to do with it. Either way, Waterdrop should won their mistake and do a proper recall. Isn't the FDA supposed to force them to do it? How can they sell their system in the US and just leave it like that?
It's not coincidence. Waterdrop is looking into the issue as has pulled the A1 from all their channels. We're planning on posting an update on this once we know more.
@@boswater6065 yeah praises for them to look into it (i.e. for them to do their job), but their communication (or lack thereof) couldn't have been worse. They need to do an official recall rather than this blatant deservice.
I see your point. At the same time, they said they already did their own testing a couple of months back and didn't find any issues. So I also understand that they are skeptic about our lab results.
@@boswater6065 I understand and accept the skeptcism, but it doesn't justify the lack of proper communication to their customers... 😞

@@boswater6065 Is your water utility LADWP?
No
@@boswater6065I’m interested in this too! Thank you!
So you don't know, even though you have the unit, if there is a "small tank" inside the unit that has a "disinfectant" in it?
We don't think there is, but we also didn't want to make any false claims.
@@boswater6065 Why not take the unit apart? It seems weird that there would be a tank of fluid in the machine that isn't accessible.
I agree, that would have made sense. But we wanted to make sure that the system still functions in case we need to run another test. Also, we weren't really convinced that there is such a tank. Anyway, Waterdrop is currently looking into the issue and we will definitely publish a video update as soon as we know more.
Which system do you use?
I use the Clearly Filtered under sink water filter. But this is not an RO.
@@boswater6065 do you have a video explaining your reasoning? I would like to see if there is something better than RO. I’m considering the under the sink AcquaTru
I just happen to like the filter and how it works. It has an inline design so is much easier to install and use. There are pros and cons to reverse osmosis. But if you want the most effective water filtration method, then reverse osmosis is your #1 option.
@@boswater6065ok thank you.

My water is about 55% poop. I'm not really worried about it.
I'm curious - where do you live?
click bate its only about a specific reverse osmosis device
I see your point. However, based on the study we covered in the video, it is quite possible that more RO systems are affected.
