Prepare to qualify! Here is a video review of Namco's 1982 arcade game, Pole Position. This game was distributed in the USA by Atari of California and was the game of the year in 1982. This video features my original dedicated machine. I like! :)

Remember playing this at The Ground Round restaurant while waiting for my Buffalo chicken wing order in the early 1980's. It was a fun game back its day. Thanks for the memories! 😃
That’s my favorite classic arcade game I’ve ever played. I really want one in my basement.
Hey I remember this video! This was the first racing game I ever played. I still love it as well as Pole Position II. Awesome review!
I owned one of these for years. One of the customs/graphics chips were fried. Everything rendered fine, but all you saw of your own car was the spoiler.
Bought it for $90, just for the sound/voice samples. couldn't sell it for anything. heh. Ended up giving it away to some old friends.
Pole Position II (our version) has billboards for Dentyne gum, Tang orange drink mix and 7-Eleven food stores.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech This arcade got ported to Namco Museum game and it's sequel.
This is a really awesome classic i used to play it as a kid all the time
My favorite. I've beatin it in the day at my local corner store in Philly.
I've wanted one of these since I was young
I've always loved Pole Position! You can't go wrong with classic racing games! I never knew how many problems it gave keeping it running, though.
I think John still has this game
You can convert an original Pole Position to a Pole Poistion II with just a chip change. I did it while working as a video game tech for Chuck E. Cheese back in the early 80's. It required a lot of chips to be changed out and many techs would have problems with seating the chips properly. The chip legs would fold up under if you were not careful causing all sorts of issues.
This is the game that stands out most for me as a kid. I spent a lot of quarters on this when it was brand new, at the age of 6-10 .. Nothing looked better for years, until Outrun, Cruisin USA and the others came out in late 80s, early 90s.
Ha! My dad tried to teach me how to drive a stickshift by giving me $10 in quarters for the sit-in Outrun game, at PuttPutt Golf & Games.
Did the trick! Miss you Dad.
What about Atari's San Francisco Rush 2049 from 1999?
Great vid as usual John. You ought to put a multi-taito in that cab...
See thing about pole position arcade i can fairly say is that in 1990 during the birth of 16 bit home systems this game, despite being from 82, still drew in the 11-13 year old crowd for an hour at the skate rink. So the graphics and gameplay had to have been ahead of its time to stand that simple litmus test.
You should get a game called Zero Wing. One of the most underrated arcade space shooters of all time.
This is a really awesome classic i used to play it as a kid all the time
The water slows u down for couple of seconds so u got to avoid it
by the way great video glad to see you back!
Great job getting this game wed
LOVED this game, which was at THE local hangout spot:"Skate-Around-USA"
I challenge anyone to rock at this game, on a smooth surface, wearing rollerskates!! (the "gas" pedal can be tricky). Prepare to qualify!!
Nice cabinet!
I always wanted to see one in real life, played the plug in play version of it. I want to see if I can someday find one
a restaurant that I go to a lot while since I was a kid has a Pole Position same stand up machine but the shifter looks different than yours
I have a pole position it comes on & plays , but have a half screen & when I turn knob to adjust to full screen it fuzzes out turn knob back half screen what do you think is wrong John master of video , really like what you do bro it helped me out a lot!!
This is one of my favorite arcade games ever. Maybe it's because I'v played to the end or maybe it's because it's simply a kick ass game. It's probably both.
They had this game at a local grocery store when I was a kid. I'd hang out with it while my mom was shopping. Sometimes she gave me a quarter.
I still think the fanfare it plays when you drop a quarter is one of the most exciting sounds in any video game. Maybe that's just because of how excited it made me as a kid, but really, I wouldn't mind hearing that jingle at key moments in everyday life.
I love the extremely long high score list in this game. I think it goes up to 100 places. It makes every game played feel more important. As a kid I would finish badly like 57th or whatever, but I thought it was awesome to see my spot in the rankings no matter how bad I was.
If I were to ever buy arcade machines, I would definitely love to have PP. It's disappointing to hear that they are unreliable.
I love Pole Position, I have one myself. Awesome game!
In 1982...
Namco: Come On, Atari! Let's Team Up!
Atari: Okay!
Namco And Atari: Let's Team Up To Make An Arcade Cabinet!
Namco: What Should We Name It?
Atari: We Will Name It Poll Position!
Namco: Poll Position? Is It A Racing Game?
Atari: Yup
Bally And Midway: SHOWOFFS!!!
That is definitely the best moment ever in 1982.
Caffeine. Lots of caffeine. ;-)
I played this game a lot when I was kid. My name was almost always at the top of the charts back then. I remember getting into it so much that I was sweating by the end of the race. heh
I swear, this game is hard.
To win the game, you can't crash or screw up even once.
POLE POSITION ROCKS WEEEEEW ERWEEEEEEEE I love the voice when it says
".... Prepare to qulafiy ...."
cool game I have one does not work did that new board for pole position come out yet I thought I heard you mention in another video there was a new board for that game coming out.
+Defonze88 Not yet. Maybe early next year.
Isn't it hard on the machine to store it in the garage?
@boverhof3 Printed Circuit Board. It's essentially the game. The motherboard, kind of.
nice mahine.
you should do a review for galaga/ms. pacman
Do fix mother boards for pole position 1 or 2
Where do you buy most of your arcades? Just Craigslist?
OMG I SEE THIS CHANNEL AND YOU'RE AWSOME
THANKS! :)
just bought the same upright version, however destroyed the monitor😂 What would be a good replacement crt monitor? I believe it is a 19" monitor.
Emulation maybe??? Would it work on Mame?
I suspect that the it would be possible to fix by putting a PC running MAME in it.
That Pac-Man has been there for a long time...
Ahhh, classics, and i load off spare monitors :-)
I prefer Turbo over Pole Position. Turbo has different types of terrain and different times of day and night as well as city and country scenes. And of course the ambulance that you must get out of the way of.
this is the only racing game that i played in my life wher i have never been able to complete one lap..is that difficult...
Games I spent the most quarters in, in the 80s:
Pole Position
Joust
Track and Field
Pac-Man
Tempest
Battle Zone (With the HMD-like view port)
Centipede
Galaga / Galaxian
Then the 90s came along and nearly ruined arcade gaming for me with games that cost a buck to play. (meh) About the only thing I regularly played then was TMNT and the Neo Geo cabinets.
"Printed circuit board". :)
PCB?
wow, I thought I was excitable, but you take it to new levels!! (in a good way) Loved the video, subby wubbied ;o)
i played pole postition once at the gamescom in 2012 and didn´t really liked it because you can spin that wheel endlessly and just spin it without any force =/ maybe i´m just to spoiled by sega´s arcade racers wich all had force feedback since outrun came out^^
cause if you once played a racing game with ffb, you just can´t go back =)
MetalTiger88 I have Outrun. Pole Position is more fun. :)
well i´m a lot younger than you and grew up with games like daytona usa and most of the 90´s stuff. i appreciate all the older games aswell, but i think that most people always like that stuff they grew up with the most =)
POLE POSITION 2 in my opinion is better than this one but if not for this one Pole Position 2 never would have been made
stop yelling, John.
shut up
dose any one know where to buy this cheep under $1000
+the offical grams shooter yes. Their was one for $500 on my forum
the gay-rawge ?
