40:1 - The Battle of Wizna - Sabaton History 001 [Official]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 січ 2025
- Sabaton wrote a song about the Battle of Wizna, called 40:1. When the Germans invaded Poland in 1939, they met determined and fierce resistance. Multiple battles show the steadiness of the Polish defenders, in contrast to the common narrative about the Polish defence. One of these Battles is the Battle of Wizna, where a Polish defensive force managed to hold off a much larger German army for several days.

BAPTIZED IN FIRE 40 TO 1.
PREACH IT TO ME, BOYS!
One of my very first sabaton songs
I just want to say thanks for the amazing start of an amazing show heva a nice day
You have it a litte bug the bar at the end of link makes an error.
When I saw the title I felt as if the winged hussars arrived
@@LyricalStarr We remember, In September
I can't wait to see Indy explain how the Winged Hussars were a tiny proportion of the cavalry charge described in the song, and that most of the fighting was done by Imperial and Polish infantry. By the time the Polish Cavalry, including the Hussars, arrived to the battlefield, the Ottomans were already retreating under sustained fire, suffering massive casualties and wavering, on the verge of routing. The charge didn't turn the tide as much as deliver the coup de grâce.
It never ceases to amaze me how the German and Austrian forces, who made up almost two-thirds of the army that beat the Ottomans and did most of the fighting, has been completely forgotten in the popular mind. Even the Polish Infantry, who thought like fucking lions for twelve hours straight against the Ottomans, have been erased from memory.
Jen'ari-asha well they weren't on the verge on routing. They were regrouping and preparing for an all out attack WHEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVE. And even then the Ottomans still held a numerical advantage. But I do agree that we shouldn't forget about the Austrians and Germans who also fought in the battle.
@@davyprayoga4276 Imperial forces had captured two key targets a full three hours before the charge, the villages of Oberdöbling and Unterdöbling. A combined assault from the three powers had taken the main Turkish fortification, the Türkenschanze. The Grand Vizier himself had been forced to abandon his position and retreat to his original headquarter in the camp since the Ottoman troops were getting pushed back so quickly that he would soon be in danger himself.
A full two hours before the charge, Ottoman units were beginning to rout from the battlefield.
Make no mistake - The Ottomans were losing the battle, and they were losing it with exponential speed as their frontline was being pushed back. They were exhausted, demoralised, and on the back foot. The cavalry charge didn't *turn* the battle, it *finished* it
Jen'ari-asha whether or not the winged hussars were there didn't change the outcome of the battle. Sure the Ottomans were losing but they weren't defeated. The winged hussars actually saved the lives of countless imperial and polish infantry. If the Ottomans were able to make an all out attack on the infantry they would still lose but the death toll would be a lot higher. So the winged hussars didn't really "end" the battle nor really "turn the tides" but merely accelerated the battle.

@@zacket-fj8yr Hold My Army!
Hold my trenchcoat!
Brilliant
The best crossover was when north koreans made ships in Poland to Denmark.
The Poles never gave up. Even while occupied, they secretly designed and mass-produced a sub machinegun.
I remember reading that Polish lancers actually did make a few cavalry charges against the Germans, but only when it was appropriate (never against tanks - that one didn't happen) and usually very successfully.
Some Polish pilots in France were given an obsolete plane (to be fair, the French also operated that design) that during the battle for that country, French command ordered those fighters grounded because they were so out-matched by German planes. The Poles flew them anyway, and still managed to knock German planes down.
Do not tell a Pole he can't kill his enemy. He'll find a way.
Poles invented , improved anti tank gun , which was a great hit in the September campaign .
There goes the story of Polish Ulans (Horsemen ) fighting against tanks ... It was a mobile Cavalry equipped with such guns , They made an escape , using flank fire against Panthers , passing by and bombarding with tank grenades .
No one , with the right mind , charges against tanks ...
immikeurnot Amen to that.
Pete Grusky Us Poles are crazy man... as a Polish American, 4th Generation, I’ll do something like that. Americans are crazy, Poles are crazy. Just a crazy combo.
Also the RAF Polish units, which were some of the most successful fighter units of the war. Poles fought throughout the war and they fought hard. There is very much a narrative of Poland rolling over to Germany which is just not true at all.
Or, you tell them they can’t, so they will do it to prove you wrong, and the enemy will be dead.
As an American, all I can say is I'm glad Pulaski and Kosciuszko were on our side in the Revolution.
We Poles always sympathize with revolutions, uprisings... freedom. Even when Napoleon sent Polish troops to quench the uprising of French Haiti. Instead they joined the uprising and stayed. Fun fact: this is why even now you can find Haitian people who have dark skin colour but piercing blue eyes.
@@aleksanderczechowicz9155 I always wondered about that!

The poles were like the Finns, they got free after WWI then in 39 got invaded by their previous overlords again and fought back, both lost their wars. They both fought a war they could not win and both fought ferociously
Well, Poles defeated Soviet Russia back in 1920, but hey came back in 1939 to stab Poland in the back. Both Poland and Finland showed great fight spirit in face of overwhelming enemy force.
Polish fought bravely against overwhelming enemy like finns. Unfortunately they lost and were opressed by Soviet over 4O year. Great at one song can unite whole nation so strongly.
Sadly only one of them got their independence back. Both kicked ass fighting like hell though.
@@pacthug4life so, attacking in the middle of civil war despite gaining independence by soviet government for free is "Poles defeated Soviet Russia back in 1920", while reconquering lost lands with huge Ukrainian and Belorussian population is "but they came back in 1939 to stab Poland in the back"? The hypocrisy of poles and their sympathizers is ridiculously stupid.
@@s4le First of all, Poland gained its independence from Germany not Soviet Russia. Central-Easter Europe was under German control according to the Treaty of Brest. Soviet Russia could not give Poland independence, because it had no control over the entities that constituted reborn Poland: The temporary Kingdom of Poland, Republic of Lublin and Duchy of Cieszyn. Second, Polish-Soviet War started with Russian attack on Vilnius (04.01.1919), it was Lenin who stated that "The road for the revolution to reach the west leads over the dead body of Poland", "We must direct all our attention to preparing and strengthening the Western Front. A new slogan must be announced: 'Prepare for war against Poland". When it comes to Polish eastern border, it is much more complicated than that, Symon Petlura gave Western Ukraine or Galicia to Poland in exchange for help against Soviet Russia (the Kiev offensive). After Ukrainians gained back Kiev, they failed to construct any state or army structures that would help prevent Russia from taking Kiev back, they put little over 24 000 troops, while Poland in 1920 put almost 750 000. Most of major cities in eastern Poland, like Lviv, Grodno, Vilnius were in majority Polish, while the countryside was mostly Ukrainian and Belorussian, that created a situation where creating a ethnic borders was basically impossible, one village was Polish, next one was Ukrainian. To avoid instability, Poland resigned from taking any major cities without significant Polish population like Minsk.
Third, Yes, Soviet Russia did stab Poland in the back, because it attacked Poland without a declaration of war, breaking non aggression pact, Treaty of Riga and many other international treaties.
I would call Russian historical revisionism "hypocrisy"
PS. Why do all Russians who I meet on the internet are insulting everyone they disagree with. Cant You guys have a normal conversation?
Im not even polish and the song gives me chills
@Jörmungandr Nice name bro xD

Imagine being one of those 700 poles defending Wizna against 40,000 Wehrmacht Soldiers and holding on for 3 days with only 12 bunkers and a few pillboxes with little anti tank weapons and machine guns. Just imagine the bravery of those soldiers. To bad the officer there killed himself with a grenade I would have loved to hear his soldier but I think sabaton did a wonderful job at visualizing that
Raginis had no other option. Germans said that they would kill polish POW if he didn't surrender, he chose death over surrender.
@@matthewr3584 thats only heresay and as Indy said its out of charactor for Guderian. It sounds to me like he was just a stubborn bastard far too proud to surrender
@@Legitpenguins99 It's hearsay as mentioned, but it also could've been a lower ranking officer than Guderian who came up with it.
The Germans did kill many of the 40:1 Polish soldiers. Quite a different treatment from the Belgian 'Resist and Bite' Company

The poles were definitely one of the fiercest fighting forces of the second world war, even if they were outnumbered, outgunned, and didn't even have the proper supplies to defend against an invasion. The REAL history channel
Just think about it. Left all alone, with two powerful military forces attacking from two sides, poor Poland, having only recently regained independence, had to stand at arms again. They fought bravely, until they couldn't fight anymore. One of the soldiers who fought in defence of Poland in September 1939 was lieutenant Franciszek Wacławik, my great great grandfather. Along with many other Polish soldiers, he managed to evacuate to France. He enlisted in the Polish Armed Forces in The West. He fought in the French Campaign and after France fell, he returned in 1944, taking part in Operation Overlord. He was promoted a few times during the war, making it all the way to colonel. The war was won, but my great grand father couldn't return to Poland. The newly installed communist regime considered the soldiers who fought in the name of the fatherland to be "traitors, western spies and enemies of the people". Along with many of his brothers in arms, he couldn't go back home, under the threat of imprisonment or even death. After Stalin's death, Poland declared amnesty for the soldiers who fought in the west and he finally returned. He spent the rest of his life hoping for his country to regain freedom, but passed away too soon to see Poland liberate itself from the communist rule. He was laid to rest in a suit, but his belt had a really peculiar buckle. It came from his field uniform and bore the words "Bóg, Honor, Ojczyzna", meaning "God, Honour Fatherland". Rest in peace, Colonel. We will never forget our brave soldiers, our ancestors.
Thanks for sharing your story with us. Putting a name and a face on someone who took part makes it easier to remember the events that unfolded so many years ago. May his memory never be forgotten!
Chwała bohaterom
Now if only Poland didn't prevent the Soviets from protecting Czechoslovakia, all of this shit could have been avoided.
@@comrademcsalty7676 except it would have happened to czechoslovakia and inevitability poland after... you seem to think the soviets and nazi's could be satisfied with what they had but fail to realise it was their downfall and the whole point of their war intentions. Should be a good enough indicator that those evil cunts were going to be evil regardless and poland was always in both cross hairs.
Seeing as how we live in a world where both lost their power, it could easily be argued that in the end it was a much better result than giving one or the other power which hypothetically could have aided their cause, keeping them alive today. Think before you speak.

I had wanted an in depth Sabaton history tyhing to happen for real, Having followed the Great War for years I knew Indy was gonna be a perfect fit as a host for the channel! And boy I was not disappointed.. This might fast become my new favorite histroy channel! Keep up the Awesome work!
This channel is like a history buff/metal head's dream come true! Just one thing: During the Battle of Wizna, up to 720 Polish soldiers fought an onslaught of 42,200 Wehrmacht soldiers and some 350 tanks. This left the Poles outnumbered almost 60:1, making Raginis's 3 days of resistance even more impressive and heroic than Sabaton's stated ratio of 40:1! I hope to see more content like this from this channel in the future, Indy Neidell and Sabaton are a match made in Valhalla!
Sabaton is Great!!!

This video made me remember that about 2 years ago I was working with a man from Poland and in one of our brakes I hear a familiar sounding song from his phone. That song was indeed 40:1 so I asked him if he knew the band witch he didnt all he could say was ''They are singing about Poland'' and he was really amazed by the song and its lyrics.
Awesome! Did you send him this video?
