Just finished replacing my starter clutch,I'm not the most mechanicaly inclined person out there but this video gave me the confidence to do it myself and it turned out great,I'm very proud of myself lol Thanks for posting the video!
This video would have been nice about 4 months earlier. I searched all over and couldn't find an install video. I ended up getting an L&L extreme starter clutch and got it all installed. The only thing is now its leaking oil so I guess I need to get a new gasket.
Very good video understood everything my turn to work on mine I also have a question I have a 01 raptor 660 and now it's starting to leak oil behind the chain is there a video that I can see to change out that seal?? Please help thanks
I have a similar issue with my 03 660. only the starter wheel will only turn freely forward and itll have a hard time back. (I used a scredriver to move it back no damage just used 2 hands) I put a new starter thinking it was that since the previous owner got a new starter clutch and wheel set up BUT as soom as I put my new starter on and everything back together it would make my starter stuck so I did the stupid thing of bump starting it only to find out the wheel was pushing my starter back and made a little metal shaving mess in there. Any help would or comments would be awesome I keep looking around for answers and nobody seems to have ever had he problem I have. I have made 2 oil changes ever since my electric start gave out and have never found metal gush of any kind in my oil thankfully so I hope its something minimum. HELP?!? IM GETTING BORED OF BUMP STARTING AND I MISS RIDDING
Find someone who has already worked on a bunch -- or a dealer even - you just may be much better off spending the money now rather than later - PERIOD !
What all do I order. Starter clutch is bad do I order the one way bearing do I order the whole thing with the gear and do I need some kind of special flywheel tool
You should order the kit to replace it all. The gear is always bad by the time it quits working. A puller of some kind will be needed. The ones sold specific for the raptor work well
***** There is one large spring that goes around the outside of all little cams that will get weak or break. Then some of the little cams start to slip and start tearing up the surface on the gear hub. The wear will accelerate from there. Other than metal shavings in your oil you wont be able to see anything unless you remove the starter clutch and inspect it. It will make a different noise and will have trouble engaging all the time.
I was making them just for the 660 because they are so difficult to remove. Not sure you will find one like that for anything else. Should be some adjustable Automotive ones that will work.
when i go to pull the flywheel everything spins with it? is that what i need a strap wrench for? i dont understand the use for it in ur video? pls help thx
llextreme ahh got it, thanks for the quick response! one more thing, would u say gear lube is necessary or can i use some oil i have in the bike already to lubricate the bearing and gear?
+Jeffrey Wheeler You can get the clutch from my dealer the link raptor one way. At this time we only have the clutch for that model and don't stock the gears.
what are the signs of a bad starter clutch? I dont know too much about bikes but my 2003 wr450f recently stopped turning on. The kick start is stuck all the way up, moves freely a couple inches than is jammed. The electric start just clicks and doesnt do anything. And I have a rekluse z-start clutch so I can not roll start the bike. I do not know what to do. I live in a small town off the road system and there is no shops here that work on dirtbikes.
Signs of a starter clutch going out are the starter spinning without the clutch engaging and turning over the motor. Sometimes it is intermittent or spins for a moment then grabs. It sounds like you have a different issue other than the starter clutch.
Sounds about like a locked up motor to me if the kick or electric start won't turn the engine. I mean kick starts always move easy then get to a real tough spot as the piston compresses so if you've never kick started a bike before maybe you just didn't know what to expect? Usually you get them to the tough spot then jump with full body weight up into it to crank the motor over. Some bikes have a compressing release you can use that makes kick starting easier but it's possible for these to get stuck and make you loose a little compression which I had happen once on a Honda 3 wheeler. But on a 450 you may need to use it. Compression release should be a button or something right there on the head usually.
+llextreme Thanks for the quick response. 2 more questions...when replacing the one-way, is it a given that the starter gear needs to be replaced? I believe mine looks ok but I do see some burn marks near the holes. Also, what solution do you use to clean the screws? Thanks...by the way, great video...it helped me decide to give it a shot to replace it myself...quoted $700+ by my local repair shop...ouch!
+Ed Sterling If clutch has symptoms of going out the gear is most likely bad. Look at the hub on the gear ( where the starter clutch rides) it is what goes bad. It needs to be smooth and not chewed up at all. I tried to show that at one point in the video hard to see though. Just use a solvent to remove the oil. I just used gas.
i try turning it over, starter works fine. when it grabs the gear it will crank the motor over and when it doesn’t grab or slips/clicks nothing happens. the machine is in mint shape except for this problem🙁
Is that what is wrong with mine you think ? Here is a link to what mine sounds like. The battery is good and so is the cdi. ua-cam.com/video/dtBRzaT1vqs/v-deo.html
@llextreme Mine is doing the exact same thing. But it happened all the sudden except for a couple times right after starting going in gear i did hear a short grind. Should i get the whole starter clutch Kit.

is the flywheel puller needed or is there a way to do it without it?
Thanks, showing the shear key was helpful, mine shattered when I was pulling the wheel.
Great video it helped me every step of the way. Actually would find it very simple if I had to do it again. Thanks for the knowledge
could you guys please consider making a one way for the 700 current raptor? Oem are still faulty to this day, yamaha cant figure it out.
I wonder if the washer plate behind the starter gear is only applicable to the years that used the bronze bearing?
There is no difference in the gears dimensionally.
holy shit, did you use enough thread locker??? My god, you should use no more than 1 DROP.
Una pregunta
De cuantos imanes el el flywheel de la raptor 660 2004 de 12 o 18
I know it's been 8 years, but has it gone out yet?
No longer have it. Would be interesting to get a thread going to see the average life span.
I parked it a year ago or so and I need to get back on it!!
so....time to fix. Thanks
nice video, i thought it was totally understandable. glad i checked it out before i did this. not near as bad as i anticipated
If you find metal shaving in the magnet what Could be cause that bike running fine cranks every start
A stock starter clutch can shave metal for a while before it finally fails.

Great method, but I probably would have only used blue thread lock instead of the red. Awesome vid still.
I live in Maryland and looking for a qualified mechanic to do this for my 01 Raptor near BWI.
so what is it that goes wrong with the original? mine needs changing but I would like to know what I am looking for. thanks
