Hi Everybody. They got salt licks in their forest. The Moose was abandoned from his mother from the day he was born. So this guy took care of him. So he sees him as his mother, thats why he licks him, he doesnt lick other humans, the other moose dont lick any human. Its not a salt lick thing, its a mother and baby thing 😊
When she came back in with the head for another hug @2:10, gave me a cuteness overload. Excellent work with your pointy ponies my man, brings a warmth to this Mainer's heart.
Lets think about this differently. You raise an animal, it is used to you. You put some food in your hand and hold it out, the animal eats from your hand. Someone else the animal doesn't know tries this, and the animal doesn't eat out of the hand. Does that mean that eating is how the animal shows affection? It shows that the animal is comfortable with the person that raised it, and feels safe eating from his/her hand. It is a show of affection in the sense of feeling safe, but the actual act of eating isn't a show of affection. The same goes for licking, the moose is driven to lick salt and minerals, they are extremely vital for all large animals, but the moose isn't going to just lick random people for that salt.. it needs to be comfortable first. So, yes, the licking does show that the moose is very trusting of this person, and some temporary licking is part of the process of "making friends" at least in deer, but the amount of licking going on here is really for nutrition. We have to look at ALL of the animals behavior when deciding it's emotional state, and not just one behavior. Having a salt lick also wont stop it, moose, deer, cow, etc are naturally wired to seek out salt, and even if they have blocks of salt, they will still lick another available source. Now for a random relevant fact that may save your life one day...a moose standing and staring you down while licking its lips is generally a sign of aggression and a precursor to charging...they sometimes clack their teeth also, this only applies when the moose is staring at you and licking it's lips.. not licking other things. Spent 15+ winters in North woods of Michigan peninsula & volunteered with DNR for counting & tagging deer & moose before & after hunting season. Not an expert in ungulates, but did learn a lot more than the average person.
Moose are such huge majestic creatures. It is truly heartwarming seeing this side of them being lovingly socialized and not stomping the crap out of a target.❤
