I was working on a Mini Cooper S. I usually use this sight/feel method to align the clutch disk, but this time the kit came with an alignment tool. The transmission input shaft would not align and I had to back the whole thing out. After redoing according to this method, the transmission slipped right in - super easy. This method is better than using an alignment tool!
Get another socket that fits well between the center socket and the clutch fingers all around, and feel around with it; YOU SAVED MY DAY; I've been around youtube, searching, but i'll stop here; we both ,together, did the trick. This 1999 freelander i am working on(changing the crank,a hell of a job!!!)) has no pilot bearing(and no pilot on the shaft) and the hole in the crank is way bigger than the ID of the splines; on top of that i can't sight it,the chassis is on the way, imagine that; But now,i think i found the solution. I will also wrap some electrical tape around the socket to ensure it fits snugly in the splines and does not droop much.
exactly what you said, like puting sometin in that holl and at the sie with your vinger and i searched on youtube what he means and i end up here and now i know THANKX ALLOT!! this is really helpfull!
THANKX ALLOT!! my friend had a swift we tried to replace the clutch bu we couldnt fit the gearbox so eveuntully he send the car to waragage and I just bought a nissan sunny from a guy for 100euro its a very good car and in good condition but the cutch was very bad, the crdoesnt move and i replaced once a Golf 4 transmision but that was Autamic and that was a succes, now i know why it didnt fit in the swift it is very hard to find a clutch allignment and my teacher told me the same...
I think my clutch is slipping, under harsh acceleration power skips for a second and he rattles slightly when engaged. I'm guessing this is clutch? Recently bought 1998 1.4, owned by a gran all it's life so not ragged but not cared for either. I was wondering how to change the clutch over as i've all the work needed myself so far (and on previous car, which was exactly the same make and model) and was wondering how hard it'd be. I'm not looking forward to tackling that gearbox. I only have jacks
These day they are so many useless tool. I have been fitting clutch this way all the time, never had a problem. The only difference is that I don't used my eyes, as it can be, sometime, difficult to be right in front of the clutch. I use my finger on the side and it is dead easy...
Hi, thanks for the video Will try a change over weekend. My question is on my fiesta tdci the clutch has become so heavy my backside and students legs are hurting (driving school car) because the clutch has become really heavy . Shall I just change the pressure plate or all of it. As I just changed it all 40k ago. Baby has 150k on it now.
hi could you help me i have a vauxhall combo van and the clutch has gone in it so i got a mechanic to do it for me he took it with no problem but now he got replacement for it and he now says it will not fit are they all same size or different my van is a 2006 diesel he say he cannot find the right cluch for it any help would be much appreciated thanks barry
The clutch not being aligned properly shouldn't be the cause of this. The only reason it has to be lined up is so you can get the gearbox on. The fact that your mechanic was able to bolt the gearbox on and you are able to drive it, tells me he had no problems lining up the clutch. As for the noise it seems to me there might be something wrong with your release bearing.
hello Phil, i watched your video for aligning the clutch.I'm asking what happens if it wasnt aligned properly. The reason im asking is that im driving a 2004 seat ibiza en recently had renewed gearbox and clutch .when i drove the first time and i kicked in the clutch there was a scraping metal-loose sound i didnt had before.I went back to the mecanic and he told me that he put he in an oil additif .This didnt work and the scraping was still there. Can you tell me what you think this is ?
So I'm simply trying to align the friction plate to the crankshaft spigot by eye....BUT the friction plate isn't aligned with the pressure plate.....what's going on!? Going to cry in a minute.
When you bolt down the pressure plate, the disc will not move. That is the clamping force an unreleased clutch you should be working with. Something is gravely wrong otherwise

Good man, great refresher. Don't want to heave that gear box up there twice because of bad alignment!

if you managed to get the gear box in without it being lined up it means that its now lined up, as it wouldn't go in if it wasn't
I know the feeling we didn't always get it right first time but 6 hours is probably some sort of record !
thanks dude. It's been a while since i've done one and this was really helpful.. reduces the fear factor eh.. :-)
It could also be the clutch disk installed backwards. Sometimes it fits but hits heads of bolts, etc. under certain conditions.
thanks for the video. I bought a clutch kit and it did not come with the tool. great job!
Thank Man i was so weary for that tool, socket save !!!

Dude did you do a video of geting the gear box off this?
TA
Whoops this is an old enough comment.I hope you where able to get it sorted by now.
Are they not supposed to be easy? apparently made to change quick for racing purposes?
So I'm simply trying to align the friction plate to the crankshaft spigot by eye....BUT the friction plate isn't aligned with the pressure plate.....what's going on!? Going to cry in a minute.
Thanks! saved me from buying another useless tool haha!
What happens/ what can I do when I bolt down my pressure plate and remove the alignment tool and the clutch drops down?
When you bolt down the pressure plate, the disc will not move. That is the clamping force an unreleased clutch you should be working with. Something is gravely wrong otherwise
ive been doing a scooby wrx clutch all day only got the gearbox half back on lol
