That's very interesting - I wonder if Zippo is trying to diversify a bit due to the decline of smoking brought about by vaping?

Good thing to have in your backpack if you like being hassled by TSA.

Things this could be used as, paperweight, fishing weight, window breaker, projectile weapon for self defense. Lots of things, just not as a bit driver.😂

Would be neat if they made something that was more of a knife maintenance insert. Something along the lines of a Work Sharp Micro. The design itself currently kind of limits its use, maybe a pass-through slot (where the flint wheel would be) for a small "extension" bit, which would give it some clearance.
The idea of using Zippo cases as an EDC case does seem like it has potential, seeing as it's just the right size for the "5th pocket" of a pair of jeans...and smaller format than altoids tin with more standardized carrying case/pouch options (as belt accessories or whatnot)...can see maybe 3D printed flat bits (leatherman) holder, alternative "dry" fire/lighting options and/or tinder/starters, mini-first aid, etc (general EDC stuff that benefits from having a case)

Unfortunate for the business model that the very reason some of their customers might be regular avid users also causes them to "age out" earlier.
The most obvious space to expand into is already taken... The peanut-style lighter I EDC uses this mechanism (flint+fluid wick) precisely because it's small and reliable but it has to be a sealed design because I otherwise wouldn't use it often enough to notice when the fuel dries up.
This hints at a promising direction: building on the brand for rugged pocketable containers/kits with some fidget value. This just needs to be a better driver *or* bit storage instead of middling at both.

Zippo bought out Ronson a few years ago, now all you can find otc is Zippo flints and lighter fluid...I wonder do they still repair lighters for free ?

Will this work with leatherman bits?

I like the novelty, especially for a generation that's vaping rather than smoking now, but it's made in China! What a wasted opportunity.

Very interesting tool in this zippo format. I have a little zippo collection, I will search for this insert. I'm interested in the little adapter for 4mm bits,is it part of a set? Or you can find it separately?

I assume that these got delayed in shipping, and were supposed to be available at the start of the month.
I have a souvenir zippo. I use a lighter too rarely - it runs out of fuel between uses. A butane lighter suits me better.

The Zippo brand is perfect for the exploding world of EDC. They need to avoid gimmicks like this though. This is a cheap chinese novelty at best when they could produce more well designed and fabricated EDC.

Do you think Zippo and such old American companies still have any development resources?

Zippo is another victim of changing times. I can only assume they have scaled back the company by 80% over the last 10-15 years.

    Two major issues for me.
    1. It is practically useless. Anything is better than nothing but this thing…wow.
    2. It is made in China and looks like it.

    • @champ8605

@@scotts4125 exactly the same. I feel guys who EDC want to look special and "prepared". If you have a need for tools you'll have far better quality ones in your toolbag, rather than the crappy little EDC versions of them.
