    For anyone wondering why the video disappeared for a few hours, it literally got blocked because of the Fairy Tail segment. So i'm currently setting up a Patreon where you can watch the video in it's entirety without any problems, this minor block probably killed the momentum the video was getting but I'm grateful that it managed to get 40K + views.
    Thanks for watching and thanks for 1000K subs and the video will be up on Patreon soon ~ T.R

    I'd be more sad about this if mangaka could actually handle the stress of long running manga, but even with decades of examples to learn from, artists will be lucky to put out 200 Chapters before breaking down.

    I always say this isn’t a problem. Mangaka having the opportunity to finish their mangas on their terms when they want instead of being forced by editors to keep it going (dragonball) or needlessly extending a series length well past the manga quality dipped long ago (naruto, bleach) is a good thing. Makes for more happier mangaka escaping the horrible throws of mangaka work lifestyles and ending their art on their terms when they want it to end. That’s not bad

    Bro you are completely right about long running shows, I fell in love with bleach in middle school and I’m now 22 years old, I have girlfriend who loves anime and we watched bleach together and it’s one of her favorites, one day she was crying at the end of the original series where everyone goes to an ice rink for fun and she just started crying out of nowhere and when I asked why she said it’s because everyone looks so much older. Even she, as someone who had only been watching for like a year felt like she grew with these characters and it really does mean a lot to the people watching

    You kinda have to give it to seasonal. When continuously dropping episodes it’s harder to keep the anime behind the manga which either rushes the source material or forces filler episodes and arcs while they’re trying to put out chapters. Seasonal relieves stress on creators in my opinion and like you said when given time they can do great things.

    • @tyronsredux
      @tyronsredux  10 місяців тому +12

      Agreed, but some seasonal anime are catching up way to quickly to the manga source material, look at Bungo Stray Dogs, Spy x Family and The Case Study of Vanitas. They all got so popular to the point that the anime caught up to the manga and the mangaka haven't had enough time to create more chapters or because of the way they drop chapters, it's going very very slowly.
      I'm not saying this as an excuse to put out pointless fillers that drag out the story for no point btw, filler was, at least from my POV, always used to help mangaka with on-going stories to get far enough ahead that the studio didn't have to start pulling shit out of it's ass just to meet the weekly quota, it's one of the reasons why the bleach adaptation is an abomination for manga readers to watch.

  • @Zac_Frost
    @Zac_Frost 10 місяців тому +141

    It's not really a problem, honestly. Modern mangaka are just "maturing," if that's an appropriate word to use. They're realizing, "Oh. There's not much more story to tell. Let me finish so I can move on to my next idea." It's honestly a good thing. Don't let staff bully you into continuing a story long past the ending, and don't just milk the story until there's nothing left, even for a sequel. Dragon Ball and Naruto are perfect examples of each of the scenarios I mentioned.
    Strike while the iron is hot, but once it cools down, stop hitting it.

    • @tyronsredux
      @tyronsredux  10 місяців тому +27

      Exactly, I think Mashle: Magic and Muscles would be a good example of a series that knew that it was going to jump in and jump out (pun not intended). It got what it wanted to get across and the mangaka knew despite how popular it was, he wasn't going to milk it.
      Tokyo Revengers is a bad example of this, a genuinely good long running series that the author milked the hell out off right at the end even though it was long past it's run.

      This is sao in a nutshell lol.
      First 8 or so episodes were amazing, top tier, they were about sword art online as the name suggests. After that they just milked it with all those random arcs and games and stuff.
      If sao was literally a 12 episode anime with the sao arc + a little nice happy ending with asuna and kirito in the real world it would be one of the best animes to date. But they ruined it and now its just a joke.

      @@bleachinmyeyesplsfun fact about SAO s writing: a lot of those first episodes were written at different points of the series as flashbacks with the original game being even shorter in the source (episode 2 s events were written after the series was finished for the anime as one example).
      So the reason why the fairy game arc is pretty shit is because you went from the author at some of his most experienced to the writer when he was still new to writing.

    8:45 It was shown that cursed users and cursed spirits exist beyond Japan, but they don't know about eachother and usually go solo. This is because there isn't that many jujutsu sorcerers who know about their power and the country probably sees them as mentally insane and they go into mental asylums.

      To be fair, a lot of Jujitsu sorcerers (which is redundant considering that, and I looked this up, "Jujitsu" means sorcery in Japanese) are insane or have gone insane. You would not want to deal in such things in the real world lest you, to quote Christopher Lee, lose not only your mind, but also your soul.

    My biggest problem with new era 12 episode seasonal anime is that everything happens so quickly, there's no build up, barely any world building. They peak really early with no buy in. I don't even know the characters and they're dead already. There's no incentive for the viewer. So you only get a mid forgettable story experience.

    I feel like the reason we don't get long running anime anymore is due to the age of streaming, because the same could be said for TV series. Before when you had to wait to watch your favorite show, we used to get 24 episodes per season and like 8,9,10 seasons of a show. But with the way we consume media now, if something isn't great then it gets canceled without any consideration to fix or better the mistakes that were made in the first season. As a relatively new anime watcher, I personally didn't like the art style in One Piece but I kept watching and I began to enjoy the world building, character development, new crew members, and the art style.
    But unfortunately that cannot be said for new shows, it's either a hit or a miss. And it's like they want to keep the story short so as to not lose viewers with too many filler episodes.

    Another problem too is something that we don't want to meet is the complaint about filler The reason why a lot of shows back in the day were long running is because when they will catch up with the manga they will have to create a new arc out of nowhere to hold over until the artist can get a little bit further ahead so they can animate it so that's another problem with the long-running series formula is that there's no in between and that's been a problem with the manga since the very beginning we can have an arc where we go through all of these emotions and these cool battles or whatever and then there's no downtime or we jump right into the next arc without any lead up that be the problem and I think that's why we kind of do need a little bit of filler just to either give the cast a break or to transition. Until the mangaka artist can catch up and do more when you have the seasonal animes you're literally holding out until the manga artist can draw a lot of chapters so they can animate it and that's the reason why you see my Hero academia and jiu jitsu kaizen taken you know these long breaks because of the fact that they're not putting filler in it and that's great after a while but eventually you're going to have to put some kind of filler into these animes in order to keep them going for a long time to keep them in the cultures like guys to keep people from for getting about the anime and the manga itself

    Anime production shifted to seasonal mainly because of IRL stuff like business and the production itself. Besides, long-running anime are actually seasonal too. The rights to produce and broadcast didn't get sold as a whole (from the start until the series ended), they got renewed, usually per certain episode or arc. That's why the DVD versions of Bleach, Naruto, etc. were released in seasons.
    Also, world building isn't just about places or areas. It includes everything like setting, societal norms, characters, and/or organization relations, etc. A world in One Piece is filled with pirates and ruled by a single organization called the World Government, that is also part of its world-building. and yes, it exists in seasonal anime like JJK too.

    From an anime watchers perspective I like the shorter ones. They are easier to watch and get caught up on. So I can avoid spoilers. The animation tends to be much better, and there is little to no filler. But in my opinion it is sometimes a bit harder to get invested in a character. Sometimes. As where a long running anime like One Piece. Of which I've watched 580 episodes. There is lots of time to get invested in the characters, and you can often times grow very fond of a character. Also because you've seem so much of these characters in a longer anime, you can often predict what they might do next. Which some people hate that, but I personally like it. It kinda feels like you grew up along side them. It's kinda like a sibling in my eyes. You've been around them so very much that you can sometimes practically read their mind. Which I find fun.
    So, yeah. In short. I like shorter animes. For the most part.

    It is interesting that TV series becoming shorter isn't just happening in Anime in Japan, but also in the US from Hollywood.
    There are DIFFERENT reasons for each. Anime, the long-running Battle Shonen anime, are based on Manga. With the evolution to adapt Manga with as little filler as possible and the movement to seasonal anime...there is less of a pressure for Manga Writers to just keep going endlessly to feed a year-round anime production cycle.
    In Hollywood...it is becoming a bit of a "budget and method of consumption" thing. LOST had 24+ episode seasons for the first 3 seasons. Something like Dexter had 13 episode seasons. Game of Thrones had 10 episode seasons but by the end had 7 and 6 episode seasons.
    Now a lot of the common Netflix or Amazon Prime shows have 8 episode seasons. A show like Jack Ryan finished the entire show with only 30 episodes after FOUR Seasons. 20 years ago a show like LOST had ONE SEASON with 25 episodes.
    There is more and more of a pressure on TV storytelling to feel more cinematic. So...more money/impact/emphasis put on every episode being important and being key to the story. No room for weird one-off episodes or unique side stories...they are being treated more like "Multi part movies" instead of having the typical "TV structure"
    In the age of streaming people aren't watching shows once a week for months, having a different episode of a different show for each night at each time...instead...people want something they can binge in its entirety and then move onto something else.
    I think that is making "short anime" have more appeal as well....people want to watch something in full, then jump to the next thing. People are less interested in just being absorbed completely by one long-running mega-franchise.

    It strongly depends. I think the sweet spot from my evaluations might be somewhere around 40-100 episodes as being ideal. But then again look at HxH how do you tell an expansive amazing story without it being longer than 100 eps. Whenever Bersek finally gets a proper no CGI laden adapation it will be another longer than 100. I think people saying that shorter is better are somewhat incorrect. Rushing through scenes and not fleshing out ideas is just as bad as stretching it out too long.

    Bleach thousand year blood war arc proved that seasonal adaptation is the best way for shounen. Imagine a seasonal Dressrosa arc and it runs for 2 seasons with the pace of the manga and amazing animation. I know it won’t happen because Toei won’t stop milking it and there might be actual backlash from the Japanese fans. Even though Wano had good animation for the most part the pacing was horrendous. Atleast the newer shonen have seasonal anime adaptations. Demon Slayer, a super mid to decent manga plot and character wise, benefitted so much that it feels like a missed opportunity with One Piece and DBS. F*** you Toei!

    South Africa is definitely not the only country that had to deal with ad breaks and waiting for hours to watch an anime episode. Other than that though, agree with you about your sentiments with long running anime. When ppl use the excuse of OP is too long to justify not watching it, how come it's never used for other shounen then? If you're a OP fan, you know it's actually too short. It's really the garbage pacing that weakens it (at least for the anime)
    We're in a timeline where there are anime fans who haven't grown up watching shows like Dragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, etc. in a weekly basis. While OP has a greater quantity of episodes compared to these series, bottom-line, all of them have WAY more episodes compared to the typical seasonal anime relatively speaking. And that's the important part here. While all these 12-24 ep anime are great since you get a concise story, you'll have to wait a year minimum for a new season. At least for me, I forget so many of the characters, their names, the events etc. that took place. As much as I love my romance stuff like Toradora, Ao Haru Ride, Kimi ni Todoke, etc., it's been years since I last watched them and pretty much need to rewatch them again if I wanna remember the overall story.
    When it comes to the long running anime like Naruto & OP, they just stick with me. I get lost in the world building & the environments. I get invested in the characters and their relationships. Atp, the battle aspects of the battle shounen just supplement the story for me or hitting those dopamine rushes cause of how hype they are. Ofc, seasonal anime offer this experience too but it's just too staggered for me imo. AoT & JJK are great examples of that. This is why I prefer reading the manga over watching the anime.
    Then there's the whole aspect of "what do I watch now after x show ended?" when it comes to the seasonal shows. I always suggest OP but like I said in the beginning, ppl disregard it for such a baseless reason. There's always that post depression feeling when it comes to finishing a series. You're sad that you're not immersed in another world and their characters. Well, long running anime can provide that same experience over a consistent and lengthy duration. I get that committing to a long series is hard in general (not just anime) but if you're genuinely loving the experience, why does it matter that it has x amount of episodes? If you're having a great time with the series, then you're gonna wish it never ends. This is what OP fans try to convey to ppl but i get that the community is pretty toxic online.
    Finally, ik long running anime isn't sustainable when it comes to the anime/manga industry. We're seeing it firsthand with Oda & OP. The working conditions are gruesome. All we can do on our end is provide support and hope the industry reforms over the years. Sorry for the long comment LMAOO but I genuinely miss long running anime. Just really had to express my thoughts about it

    Seasonal anime is the best thing to happen to the industry - I grew up watching anime during the heyday of the early 2000s, I was going from high school to college when hulu and crunchyroll were just illegal anime streaming sites. Long running shit is full of still frames and wasted chances for hype, and I say this as someone who loved the big 3 growing up. But with most seasonal works, every encounter is eye candy, a motherfucker tearing open a loaf of bread can be one of the most entrancing series of frames you've ever seen.

    • @tyronsredux
      @tyronsredux  10 місяців тому

      Ngl, that bread metaphor you made would be great if Studio Wit animated Food Wars lol
      That aside, I completely agree with your sentiments, seasonal anime has been a great thing for anime since it began, like I mentioned in the video, more time allows studios to actually make great quality shows and because of this we get shows like AOT, Made in Abyss, Ranking of Kings, JJK etc. I even mentioned it in my video about anime being better than manga during the Made in Abyss section that I'd rather wait to get a high quality show rather than read the manga. I don't mind waiting, infact if the quality of the material that is being adapted is high enough to match length it took to make it, then I don't care if it's a seasonal anime.
      Long running series have their own benefits too, people can grow with a character, if you feel like you are at a very turbulant time in your life it's nice seeing that with the same character you are growing with. It can get people who love obsessing over characters for long periods of time, like, despite how much people shit on Boruto, there are actual people who love the anime, shocking I know but there are people who like the series despite how bad some people consider it to be.
      That's why I said it's good to just enjoy the memories you share with the shows you grew up with, and enjoy the new landscape of the anime world we are living in

    Unlike with seasonal anime, you’re mostly able to read manga every week/biweekly depending on breaks, so you have much more time to grow with them, unlike seasonal anime where you’re just kinda
    Watching for a bit
    Decide if you like the series or not
    It ends
    Happiness/sadness occurs (sadness normally for slice of lifes)
    So if I like an anime, I tend to just read the manga unless I can’t be bothered to, or if I just get spoiled for a series a bit I’ll prolly read the manga to avoid more spoilers
    Also, with reading manga, it’s great when a new anime becomes one of your favourites, you read the manga, a new season is coming out and then you can’t wait to see some specific moments pop up
    So yeah
    Manga’s great

The decison to star focusing Mikey's "Dark Urges" was were the story decided to jump off the peak that it had reached. I don't even mind that Ken wanted to focus on Mikey but why not earlier during the manga, Mikey has always been a volatile person so having an arc before the Tenjiku Arc to get to the root of Mikey's problem would have been a much better way to conclude his arc. Then after the Tenjiku arc the story would end after the wedding and with an Epilogue chapter.

After I realized what anime was, I also realized I had known the existence of several others in passing like Naruto, Pokémon, Yugioh among a handful of others. Just through the cultural zeitgeist I had picked up through osmosis. In the end, I decided to watch all of these. If I liked one anime, I might like several others after all. Loved all of these. Though, I never did go back and watch Pokémon. I adored it, but I let that one be just a nostalgic memory from childhood. It did become clear why I loved Avatar so much growing up and preferred many of the other cartoons that were highly influenced by anime or were literally anime like Pokémon. The 2000s especially was quite the time. So many things were influenced even if creators weren’t always forthcoming back in those days. It was kinda hush hush, I think, that’s why many weren’t forthcoming. It wasn’t cool for authors and other creators to admit they were influenced by foreign sources. Not yet. People often talked around the issue even when they were trying to be more forthcoming w/o literally saying it outright.

    Also started losing interest in anime the shorter they all got, even though I’ve also watched a lot of 12 episode anime’s over the years they were more slice of life and more grounded in our world, so I didn’t feel the need to know more about the world etc
    I’ve read a lot of manga and manwha now doe and even light novels
    Also feel like animation got too polished, there was a certain charm to animation style back in the day that just felt more charming to me. I didn’t even know anime was a thing till I moved to America at 13 and fell in love and watched so many but somewhere along the way I just found myself reading Manga more

      FT is mostly just hated for the popularity and other superficial reasons like it's too similar to OP. In-fighting between the different anime fandoms within the anime community is not anything new. People complain about the power of friendship, but that is in plenty of other anime. It's a staple of the battle anime genre and of the ideals Shonen marketed stories are meant to provide to young people.
      I wouldn't say FT is hated anymore than anything else that gained immense popularity.

    in terms of manga there do seem to be shonen stories that will last for quite a long time if all goes well. 2 great examples i would say are blue lock (thee current top selling manga) which has the potential to pull a timeskip after the next big arc that is coming up to show the characters playing professionally, another great but slightly more niche example is 'welcome to demon school iruma kun' the manga has like 34 volumes and still a lot of room to grow. it has crafted a pretty interesting world with it's own politics. i am sure u can find even more shonen manga and anime that have the potential to last for years if you look outside of jump

    • @tyronsredux

      I swear, I thought I had responded to this comment lol. Yes I agree, there are plenty of shonen manga and not even just shonen manga but different genres of manga outside of Jump that have the chance to be long running. I'm glad you mentioned Blue Lock cause I see Blue Lock as one of thee only sports manga that might do Hajime no Imppo numbers. If not, then it can get to 500+ chapters
      Also Iruma Kun is probably one of my favourite Shonen-Isekai stories, it feels like Isekai Harry Potter with demons and I feel like we haven't even scracted the surface of the actually story and we are what? 200+ chapters in. There definetly is more then just the shallow pond of manga/anime I chose to swim in for this video and honestly that's kind of an error on my part lol🥲😷

    This is a concern I’ve been having recently. The weekly anime formula is what made anime so popular in the first place, knowing you’ll be able to watch your favorite anime on the almost every Saturday while eating breakfast is a great and nostalgic feeling and it’s not something you get with seasonal anime. You know your time is FAR more limited with this series and when it ends your stuck possibly wondering for years if that show you liked will get a season 2 or 3. At that point why even bother get invested in the anime if it’s likely your time with this show will be a measly 12 and less likely 24 episodes. Shonen become popular because people love seeing the MC go from a loser to a well respected warrior. It’s much harder to get that feeling with the uncertainty of seasonal anime.
    I understand the value of seasonal anime, like animators have less work and we receive higher quality anime but the 12-24 episodes with a less then 50% chance of a continuation formula could kill shonen.

    I'm personally game seasonal is becoming the norm. I get your point about growing up with anime series cause I did too but having to sit through awful filler arcs that last for weeks or a year, filler moments to pad out time, and some episodes just looking like dog shit cause the animators didn't have enough time to cook is something I'm fine with not going through anymore.
    If Black Clover was seasonal and gave animators time to animate the craziest cuts of animation it would have probably taken off way faster than it took with the long running weekly episode that have mostly okay animation with a few episodes of stand out animation.
    I will miss manga series going on for decades but as much as I love series like Naruto,Bleach, and Dragon ball the story in the last arcs or last handful of chapters take a nose dive in quality cause the author is burnt out, Get sick from overwork, and probably didn't imagine the story was going to be this long and didn't plan it out. I'd rather take every manga ending on their own terms with a bang than ending in a sad whimper cause the author is just DONE with their own series.
    I read through the Tokyo ghoul manga which was roughly 300+ chapters and the final arc felt so weird and different from the rest of the manga and that was because the author fell out of love with his own series cause of all the stress it was putting on his body.
    Honestly that's depressing to hear.... imagine having your dream job and telling your dream story and you fall out of love with it due to your body giving out and the stress of the industry

    • @tyronsredux
      @tyronsredux  10 місяців тому +1

      I agree a 100% with everything you are saying. I do think it varies from series to series thou, take JJK, Black Clover, Chainsaw Man and Fairy tail for example. JJK as an anime and manga has always been fast paced (when it isn't waffling about the power system) JJK tends to always get into the action very quickly, there isn't really time for fillers or for the world to slowly build, the story is always moving forward so of course the animation quality would probably be as high as possible.
      One Piece, Fairy Tail and Black Clover are very more focused on the adventure aspect of the shows and they save the budget for the fight scenes, if you've watched the last 10 episodes of Black Clover, you can tell the budget went up drastically cause they were fighting most of the time, it wasn't focused on the adventure side.
      Also as someone who recently read all of Tokyo Ghoul recently for the first time, I can also tell that Ishida-Sensei was cleary way to burnt out from the weekly release formula. I'm glad Ishida gets to drop chapters at his own pace for Choujin X

  • @tam2071
    @tam2071 10 місяців тому +2

    Hmm, i can agree on hating the 12 episode format. Less an issue with it being a short span and more it being a forced span. If you've watched some seasonal anime then you'll get the gist of the pacing for every show by the end of episode 1. Gets stale fast.
    Series should be as long or short as they need to be. Cyberpunk works great as a short series, does everything it sets out to do. One piece works as an epic as thats accomplishing what it aims to do.
    As for the future all the current gen series are coming to and end and we'll just get something new. I'm old enough to think anything post 2008 is brand new still so seen plenty come and go. It'll be great for the industry and i think what ever comes next will be closer to the spirit of one piece than anything else, we're due a new adventure.

People forget it was a montly thing, and it is well written enough that you were an anime only (like me) you would find that narratively it has the feel of the harry potter novels.
