  • In this video I use two failing #olive #trees as a case study to investigate why they are failing, diagnose the possible causes and take essential steps to bring them back to full health. The key points when caring for your Olive Tree are:
    1. Ensure very good drainage by adding crocks and gravel to the bottom of the pot.
    2. Olives are hardy but enjoy light (direct sunlight) and warmth in the growing season.
    3. Don't over water the olive tree. Let it ALMOST dry out between watering then give a very good soaking.
    4. Leave a space at the top of the pot so that the water does not run off when watering.
    5. Feed weekly during the growing season with liquid seaweed food.
    6. Prune during the growing season, don't be afraid, I took over half away and was rewarded with hundreds of new leaves, you can see this in the video.
    7. Repot when the leaves show signs of distress (fading colour, dropping off), but first ensure that it has not been over watered because that might be the main problem. Probably needs repotting every other year.
    8. It is hardy but try not to let it sit in very cold wet conditions.
    9. when pruning, open up the centre of the plant to let light in. Where there is light there will be growth, this will help it to thicken or 'bush' out.
    10. Apply a gravel mulch to suppress weeds.

    Most of the olive tree videos here are from Australians or Americans. This is SO English. "I bought these two from Morrison's & got £10 off". . Great stuff.
    I love olive trees for the same reasons that you do - & I have 3. . One is very large (cost me £300) in a huge pot (I'll never be able to repot it if I have to !!) I had a big scare 3 years ago when, after returning from a holiday, I found it dried out & I lost all the leaves ! I cut it right back &, within a few months, the shoots started coming. But they were SO green & looked like hedge branches & leaves ! After a year, they finally turned silvergreen & it's now back to its former glory.

    Thanks a million for your interest in olive trees. For sure they are not to be dealt with as flowers, they are in fact legendary and number one in survival, they survive a dry pot and a dry season as well: they grow as a child, fight as a teen and live for countless days or years; yet their rewards are endless for you, your kids and theirs as well.
    Simply because her shyness prevents her to be Not Green. She discharges her leaves unnoticeably .. for us to forget the autumn rule, to be happy forever… AN OLIVE TREE IS A QUEEN.

    good in depth olive tree information , thank you . I bhave 10 new potted trees 1.5M high and have very shallow soil in the garden .
    Beneath the soil is sandstone / rock which will not drain well . Would it be a good idea to place the trees as far into the soil as possible and build up a soil mound around the root ? Would it give enough nutrition ? There are steel bars driven into the sandstone which the trees will be tied to for vertical support . Soil depth is around 200mm only !

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK

      Hi there. It sounds as if yours should be ok. I would give it a try and keep an eye on them. If the drainage is poor the idea of raising them on a mound seems like a good one. My olive plant came in a similarly looking crappy plastic pot but with good drainage. I repotted it into a larger terra cotta to match the size of the treetop. Within days all leaves curled up and dried out completely. Watering hasn't helped, letting it sit in the sun without water hasn't helped it either. When I made a small cut into the bark, it's perfectly green, it's obviously alive, but the leaves all curled up and died. I haven't been able to find any help for this, has anyone ever encountered such an issue? :(

    Hi there. I’ve been given an olive plant in a pot. Quite small. I am a new gardener and would like to know if once I put it in a bigger terracotta pot how long can it stay on the patio for in north of Scotland. It’s a south facing garden and the ere is a lot of warm sun pours in the kitchen windows. It can be windy tho and we do get more than our fair share of rain. Any advice greatly appreciated I want Aphrodite to do well Thank you

      I'd leave it out all year. Perhaps shelter it from strong winds. Repot every 2 years or so. I think it will do well. Mark

    Help me! I live in USA Florida. I just got my first Mission Olive Tree this summer. I repotted as instructed. But now something is eating the leaves almost like a web like material is left were bits of leaf are clinging to the material and branches...its also eating the outside does not seem to be eating inside the branches near the m as in stem. What can I do to discourage these no seeums from snacking on my future olive snacks!

      Hi there. That's worrying isn't it. I'm afraid i can't identify the pest with seeing it. Could it be wooley aphid? In which case wash the plant with mild detergent water. Then spray weekly until gone. Or perhaps it is a fungal disease. In which case you require the correct fungicide. Perhaps take a photo to a local garden centre? First thing i would do is thoroughly but gently wash the whole plant with a mild detergent water. Keep the plant well fed to resist disease. Mark

      @@MarksHouseandGardenUK Thank you. MARK. I wasn't sure I should still feed it going into its dormant stage of course. I will use Dawn Dish soap and water. It's what us Americans use to clean animals caught in oil slick accidents here in the US. It should be gentle enough. I appreciate your suggestions. I do not believe its a fungus definately chomp marks on the leaves even if I I haven't seen the culprit. I truely enjoy your presentations thank you for doing them. I will continue to watch of course. Bye for now.

    Hi Mark. My potted olives have developed a white stringy substance on them. I also see a lot of flying bugs on them. I’m gonna buy some insecticide to spray them but the leaves are changing colour etc.
    What do u think I can do? Do I need to totally prune them back?

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK  Рік тому

      Hi zaakir. Sounds worrying. Although it may be that the leaf change is unconnected to the infection. If it was mine i would apply the insecticide as soon as possible following the manufacturer's instructions. Is it potted or outdoors in the ground? Mark

    No compost in soil. Mineral-based soil for olives. No pots with one hole. Absolutely no gravel on the bottom of the container. Use air pots for a healthy root system.

    Hi, i am Richard. I just wrote to ask some advice regarding my olive tree. I have cut the roots of my olive tree and repotted it in well draining soil. However, it has lost a lot of leaves and am hoping that i could revive it. Can it still be saved? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK  Рік тому

      I believe so yes. Don't over water or over feed. The leaf shedding may be a natural reaction and it may in the end be rebalanced. Where in the world are you? Is it warm?

Hope you could give me some advice on how i could save it. Thanks a lit in advance.

    Hello Mark, I have been watching your UA-cam videos and they have helped me alot thank you, big fan of yours. If I may ask for some advice on my olive tree, unfortunately, i didn't cover my olive trees in the winter and sadly one of them is dead. I'm trying to save the second tree, I took it out of its pot like you said and removed all of the compact soil around the roots and re potted it, I have also pruned it all the way back as you said, when I scratch the bark there is green on the main stem and some green on the smaller top branches, the inside of the twigs on the head are white with a little green does this mean it will grow back again? Any info would be much appreciated. I have sent you some photos on Instagram. Thank you, Freya.

      I believe it may grow back. Don't overwater it until it gets going. And don't give up on the dead one just yet. Be patient, all things in moderation and be hopeful. Is my suggestion. Mark
