Hey, Mark! I'm in South Carolina caring for a very small olive tree cutting that has taken root and I wanted to be certain I was caring for it properly. I am so glad I found your site!
The little olive tree I have was given to me by a friend who air layered it about 4 years ago.
. Have you ever air layered any of your plants? Demonstrating thuis technique of propagating plants would be so useful as one can obtain a nice -sized plant at the very start.
Thank you for your excellent gardening tips!!

I had a fleece protective drawstring bag left over last winter so I put it over our olive tree leaving it open at the top and bottom. When we took it off in the spring it had lost almost every leaf inside the bag, but the top growth which was exposed still looked okay. I think this happened because it was a green bag and the lack of light was the reason. The good news is that it’s completely recovered and is covered in healthy green leaves.

Thanks Mark. In which season you prune Olives to get back buds. I have a young Olive tree planted it i the ground to thicken the trunk to try to make a Bonsai.
I pruned a branch for testing and the buds grow right on top of the branch. I need buds further back on the branches ?
    Thanks Mark 🍃🍃

Hi there. In theory they will grow from just below the cut. So if you want lower buds you would need to cut back down the stem further

Hi Mark, great to see the new trees going so well. Have you changed your watering routine with the larger trees, in past videos you have mentioned giving them a good soaking every week or 2 rather than each day?

Hi Tony. Until these get established and because they are free draining into the ground I am watering more for the first few months until they become established. Mark

Hi mark, cracking video 👍I’m new to gardening and planted my olive tree in the ground before doing much research (or finding your videos). The drainage is probably not the best and it’s showing signs of soggy roots, do you have any tips to retroactively add drainage? It’s young so it’s not an expensive mistake, but I’d like to sort it out if possible

Hi Jamie. Thank you. You could uplift it and put gravel beneath and also plant into a slightly elevated mound like I have done. If you have a thick bed of clay I'm not sure if any other solutions. So the elevation might be key

Hi Mark, thanks for your video. Do you have any advice for those of us that find yellow leaves with black spots? Recently bought a similar sized tree to yours, but its still in the pot. Thanks !

this might be peacock spot and I believe it is harmless, you can treat them with a proprietary copper solution in the winter/spring. I understand it does not hurt the plant.

I have a straggly potted olive about seven years old. Would it be ok to prune it now? ( I know it should usually be done in Spring). I am about to repot it as well. Thanks

Hi Mark. My little olive tree after winter storage by a window in the garage had half healthy and half yellow/brown leaves ie each leaf was half and half. It has been growing well in its pot in a sheltered space on the patio but the new growth are showing the same thing now. Not all,of them but quite a few. Any ideas what is going wrong. I can’t find the answer on google Many thanks Gail

Hi. I had a similar problem. I think just be patient. Keep caring. And consider repotting whilst there is still some summer left. Don't over water. Mark

@@MarksHouseandGardenUK thanks Mark. Good of you to take time to reply. I think it’s hard to find a spot in my garden that gives Aphrodite some shelter from the North Scotttish wind and rain. It has been a very wet winter, Spring and summer so far. I’ve picked off the yellow leaves , giving her air in the middle and we have had no rain for 2 days. I repotted her at the end of last season so maybe she can stay like that for this year. I’m determined to help as much as possible but it might just be that I can’t provide enough shelter outside. She didn’t do well in the sunroom so moved her into the garage by the window. I’ll keep watching your olive tree videos and thanks again.

These big trees depending on variety should withstand winter cold without any protection if temperature does not exceed -10-12 C'

    Hi Mark,
I could do with some help please, I recently bought two small olive trees online ( , 100 cms ) one turned up with lots of leaves all over the branches and a nice shape, the other has, bare branches at the bottom no leaves,, with very sparse leaves to the very top of the tree, the leaves that are there have brown blemishes on, i have contacted the seller with photo's, they tell me tree will be ok with care?
I'm not convinced, I have pruned a couple of the bare branches down but the wood is dead , so I am reluctant to prune hard in case it's all dead wood lower down, I feel it needs to be cut back to promote new growth and get a better shape, ? Any suggestions?

      Hi Carol
You have done what I would have done. I might take it back where you bought it? Alternatively, yes, prune and care. Don't overwater, sunny spot, dry out between watering, consider repotting it. Ensure it has good drainage.
      I hope that helps?
      Mark

You need to be careful with those plant pots buried in the ground as I know in previous videos you've mentioned hedgehogs do visit the garden so there's a risk of one falling in & becoming trapped.
Not sure how deep they are & maybea full size adult hog could climb back out but younger, smaller ones & especially hoglets could never get out if they fall in.
