I have done this repair on two of my toilets and stopped the water from running. This is a great video to watch. I used the complete set from Korky that I bought from Home Depot. If you have old shut off valves, don’t touch them, turn water off at the main, old valves may leak in the on and off positions so I didn’t mess with the old shut off valves.
Excellent job, Roger. Of course, you had the toilet sitting up on a workbench so you're not wriggling around on your knees and back. At 70, my problem is just getting down there to work!
Roger. thanks for showing us how to take apart a Kohler canister style toilet. I have one of those. I like that style better than flapper style. If you don't have a wet/dry vac handy, a big car wash sponge, or even a terry towel is good to get water out of the tank. Wring the sponge out into the bowl. You can get rebuild kits for angle stops if the angle stop is a problem. Much easier than replacing the angle stop if the access is poor. Always give a good look at the toilet supply hose assembly and if you have any doubts about it, replace it now. I always replace the ones with plastic fittings or if the hose is getting not too flexible. How do toilets know when the store is closed and to act up then?
This is helpful for me. It is almost Christmas and my toilet is running intermittently and I don't want to spend extra money during an expensive time of the year, so I was planning on letting it run for a few months and fixing it in the Spring. You have given me a few things to try.
A great video so that most diy'ers have to call the plumber in to fix their cock-ups! I fail to understand why the whole cistern has to be dismantled for a very quick fix?? 99% of the reasons that the there is a running WC is that the fill valve seal is perished or there is debris on the seat. All that is required then is to turn the water off to the cistern and then open up the fill valve insitu - there is certainly no need to remove the whole valve assembly and risk future sealing problems with the valve and the cistern. The valve seat should be cleaned and the seal replaced as it is a very cheap item. Here in UK most of our cisterns have traditional syphon flushes that are almost 100% reliable and vary rarely need to be replaced or even serviced. The only point worth noting is that when setting the float height for the fill valve be aware that the fill valve can dribble water after it appears to be closed until the pressure on the float is high enough to ensure a seal. It is therefore worthwhile initially setting the float height a little lower and then monitoring the water level and adjusting it over several days.
Before you do anything take the lid off the toilet and then flush. Watch what’s happening. In my case the little chain was just getting caught under the flapper. So I adjusted the length. Done.
One thing I ran into with a running toilet. The hose coming from the fill valve to the overflow tube needs to be above the water line. If you put the hose too deep into the overflow tube, it will cause a siphon affect. It took me a while to figure out why my toilet kept running after replacing the flapper and the fill valve.
This is what I needed when I found you months ago. Super helpful, thank you! One request...get closeups of the whatever you unhook, tighten, pop off, put back together, etc.

I always recommend replacing the stop to a ball valve quarter turn instead of a gate valve those always seem to leak even when I tighten the packing nut what do you think?
That was fascinating I’ve been dining plumbing for around 30 years or so mostly I’ve had calcium deposits on the water inlet float and the flapper valve after a few years the rubber starts to get rotten usually it’s better to replace the flapper and the water level valve because it usually needs more help than just a gasket as for the flapper assembly you showed I’ve never seen that model sold in any plumbing stores or even HomeDepo or Lowes stores I’ve seen a few variations of modules but they were a big pipe opening with a couple different kinds of flappers and a pipe coming up behind it that the fill hoses goes into the chain goes to the flapper which has a big round dome on it to trap air in so when you turn the handle as soon as the flapper lifts off of the drain fitting it floats up until most of the water drains from the tank then the flapper drops back down blocking the water in the tank allowing it to refill till the float valve shuts off the water the running problem happens for a few reasons one of the most common I’ve found is they get older some times the flapper will drop a little faster or the hand has gotten a little loser sometimes the bar on the handle has gotten a little loser and the chain has changed a little anyway the extra length of chain will go over the flapper an get between the flapper and the drain pipe so water keeps leaking into the toilet causing it to keep turning the water on and off. The other main problem is sand or something in the shutoff valve which you mentioned or a bad gasket so it can’t shut off the water another main problem is the fill hose or something is touching the float or it just doesn’t float as good as it use to sometimes the hight or the float level will get moved and it will just not shut off if you can lift the float a little and the water shuts off adjust the rod hight on the float so the water shuts off just before the water gets to the top of the overflow pipe like a 1/4 inch. If those fix it don’t go dismantling your toilet 🚽 I’ve found taking the tanks off can cause problems remember the are made of porcelain like a flower pot if you over tight the bolts or drop the tank sometimes just wiggling the tank you can crack it they have built in spacers to hold them in place but sometimes the gaskets are a little to thick and sometimes a little to stiff the seals on the water inlet and the big drain in the middle aren’t much of a problem but the bolts are make sure you put a rubber gasket on the inside of the tank on the bolts some have gaskets that go through the tank to seal like the one he was showing but most don’t as I said the tank is porcelain if you have a metal bolts turning on it without a rubber gasket it can shatter like glass and if you break the tank you will have to replace the entire Toilet sometimes you can glue it back together but if your doing somebody else’s toilet they probably won’t be happy and I doubt that you can find a replacement so be careful. Remember if it ain’t broken don’t take the tank off it the tank is leaking around the top of the toilet or the flapper seat has to be replaced or the bolts are rusted out you will have to take it off but 90% of the time you can just replace the flapper and or the water shut off float mechanism and your done don’t make a big job out of a little job I realize if you’re a plumber you want to charge a hundred or so for tearing the tank off so it takes an hour and then finding broken things then having to replace the toilet for another $150 - 300 or more plus’s another couple hours labor and getting the toilet or having them get it for you then go right a head but remember that’s why people have to get drunk because they can’t sleep at nights because of the things they do and then bragging that they did it. Probably a little to preachy but it bothers me the things people do and then try to pretend there smart

Try an toilet auger.sometimes pieces of paper, dental floss etc get hung up in the toilet trap and act like an wick causing the water to slowly leave the bowl
Do not forget to install a main valve and a few more on strategic places of your watersystem in your house first of all. This will save you time and money over the years.
Roger sometimes depending on the age of the installation and the water quality just changing that rubber seal will not do the trick. After graduating in Engineering and doing a building porter´s work for more than 10 years, I learnt that once the installation is more than 5 years and leaking then just change the whole system saves time and unhappy clients, though it´s abit more expensive
@@OCC_Plumbing_and_Restorations Agree that It sounds rediculous but when the water is hard and you find calicium depósitos and brown or green alge around the mechanism just changing the part which fails will definately mean a recall for another failure on another part. After 2 experiences it became cheaper to change the whole mechanism than going back again to look for the new leak
@@OCC_Plumbing_and_Restorations Only valve mechanism. Whole toilet!!! no way too much work. I enjoy doing optimal work not unnecessary work. By the way nice educative videos for homeowners, though I know that handymen will learn a lot from you
My toilet does the opposite. It won't fill unless I mess with the fill valve. It was so annoying I had to put in a dog collar that the user has to pull on just so the fill valve would kick on.. I already have a new fill valve, but my water shutoff is stuck open.
Fill valve failed. Solution? Replace the fill valve! Why mess with the tank and flush valve???? Additionally, you are causally removing the tank at waist height. Homeowners are on their backs in an awkward position taking the tank off for what? Anytime you remove something, resetting something needlessly you create a possible leakage problem or possibly a cracked tank if the non-plumber over tightens the bolts when putting it back on.
Usually leaks are caused by the flapper or fill valve, maybe the handle, and rarely anything else. It is usually pretty easy to tell just by pulling the lid off and staring at it for a few minutes.
How to fix a oil leak o your drain plug of your engine. Remove your engine from your car Completely disassemble every bolt and part of the engine Put it all back together and install engine in car Remove drain plug and install a new washer Tighten drain plug The leak is fixed

Be sure to check your vacuum cleaner is "wet and dry" 😀
I had the same thought 🇺🇸😛😛
Do not forget to install a main valve and a few more on strategic places of your watersystem in your house first of all. This will save you time and money over the years.
As soon as he said “3 bolt tank” I immediately got flashbacks of the dreaded rusted 3rd bolt that’s too close to the wall to grind off.
Mini bow saw is your friend 😉
I have had to remove those but usually they are the cleanest ones because they never get splashed by bad aim!
Change the whole thing after 5 years? That's ridiculous!
@@Micheph Are you talking about the whole toilet or the whole valve?
@@OCC_Plumbing_and_Restorations Only valve mechanism. Whole toilet!!! no way too much work. I enjoy doing optimal work not unnecessary work.
By the way nice educative videos for homeowners, though I know that handymen will learn a lot from you
@@Micheph Thanks! I've heard of people replacing the whole toilet when a part goes bad. I'm glad you're not one of those people.
I thought you were gonna say "shut the water off" 😄
Over 15 minutes to explain? You just flushed me out of here.
There are chapters, so you can just click on the time code that best resembles your problem and how to fix it.
@@RogerWakefield thanks Roger
My toilet does the opposite. It won't fill unless I mess with the fill valve. It was so annoying I had to put in a dog collar that the user has to pull on just so the fill valve would kick on..
I already have a new fill valve, but my water shutoff is stuck open.
Strange. Do you have a Fluidmaster 400LS by any chance?
I've watched the index pic and laugh my ass off :D
Any alternatives to the chain, mine gets kinked and the toilet runs... Jiggle the handle and it stops. Just annoying
Adjust the chain so there is less slack.
90 per cent of the time its a bad flapper no tools under two minutes.
True, or the fill valve.
is your toilet running? well you better go catch it!
3:29 anyone giggled at this part?
😂
✋
I'm Watching this on a toilet :)
Shut the water off too the tank!
Do a video on why people doing plumbing (service or construction) should NEVER wear a wrist watch lol.
Nobody who does plumbing has a sense of humour in 2022 or is it just me?
4 times over last 16 years all it was tis rubber flap.
Jeez you have some hard water

Going to save this for when we go back to our other house.
It runs like a MFer and I can't figure out why.
Try diagnosing the problem to avoid having to take the whole thing apart.
My toilet is running right now and I'm tired of hearing it turn on and off.
Change the flapper valve
Find what is leaking
I jumped at this video the minute I saw the title. But I was stymied in the first couple of minutes as my vacuum cleaner isn’t meant to vacuum up water. So now what?
I did watch some more of the video but there doesn’t seem to be anything easy about it.
If you keep it BOLTED to the floor, it wont run..... LOL
I tried but my dyson didn't get the water out. It just started smoking.
Roger Rules 🤟
The only way to stop a running toilet is to tackle it and keep it from running away from you or you'll never find it then you have to buy a new one and tell the clerk that the old toilet ran away from you and never found
Shut off the water supply to the toilet??
Yes
WTF Roger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At 12:30 he actually tells you how to fix the toilet.
I've found the best way to stop a running toilet is to tie its legs.
