    Since I started decluttering, we have extra space in our crawl space now. Now, when I make a purchase, to be sure I needed that thing, I will put the receipt and box together in the crawl space. Once I have had the item for 30 days and actually have used it, I will give myself the OK to recycle the box/receipt. If I did not actually use that thing, I actually do the return now! I get the money and the space back in my house from a thing I did not actually need. Just something that works for me :)

    I have so much trouble with the leftover retail therapy habit. I am 100% a minimalist, so I tend to start looking for things to need. It isn't hard to find something that will improve your quality of life in some way, even though I have a lot of careful criteria. My strategy will be to slow down my shopping.
    Likewise, almost nothing is a need in my life anymore. (I recognize how lucky that makes me. I hope everyone can have that.) The only things that are really needs are food and ongoing therapy.
    I absolutely love getting creative about repurposing things to fill a new need/want.
    I'm not going to sell my shopping habits to a company, sorry. Nothing is free. You are giving them your info in exchange.

      The point about looking for things to want is such a good one! I used to work in retail myself, so I would often find excuses to buy this or that.

    With lockdown we have all been on a spending freeze 😜. I keep a lists on my phone of what we need for our home, clothing for myself and my husband and one for my daughter. On Tuesday I bought her 3 new pairs of pants because she has outgrown several pairs. This morning I went through her wardrobe and I have taken out what is too short for her, when she gets back from school she will look at those clothing items and decide if she is ready to say goodbye to them. We pass on her outgrown clothes to younger cousins. I need to get better at thoroughly researching what I'm going to buy, my husband is fantastic at that.

  • @TTaddicted
    @TTaddicted 3 роки тому +3

    Like you I have a list on my phone. I have it in an app that I can change around the order of the items and even make different lists (ex. Kid clothing, things for the house etc.) This way can prioritize which I want first. Then if something comes up and I am thinking about purchasing, I just think, "Is this item more important than the items on my list? I will have to wait longer to get the items on my list. Is this purchase worth that?" It has helped me so much!

    I should have done this with my sofas. I was debating between two equally expensive brands and didn’t like the colors offered by one, so I went with the other. Even though the brand I passed on had custom slipcovers and you could buy more. Five years on I ended up using slipcovers on the couches I bought, they don’t fit well, I can’t buy custom ones, and if I dislike the ONE color they come in I’d have to dye them. Taking an extra few months to think things over might have made all the difference.

    I buy clothes because I'm not happy with how I look. I just feel like if I can get that one top or dress or jeans that makes me look the way I want, I'll be happy. Of course, nothing I buy actually changes anything and most of it ends up being donated. It really sucks, especially because I can recognise what's happening, but I just don't seem to be able to stop, even when I try and make plans and budgets. It all goes out the window in week 2.

    "Don't ever go into debt to buy anything" this whole past year going through custody court with two kids with food allergies and being unable to work as much.... I have amassed some serious debts literally only buying needs. I am on my way out of it but have a very.long.way.to.go. sometimes idk why I still watch these vids... all 3 of us live in one hotel room. I desperately want our situation to change and not sure minimalism is the answer. Only not sure what to do next. My kids are gravitating to the "I want" materistic US culture and I know its because we have some needs that aren't getting fulfilled. Only IDK how to tackle it all right now. It's like slowly drowning

      @@AtoZenLife you speak Chinese!? Wow, Amazing! And now learning german! That's so cool! Your children will be trilingual! :)) that's awesome! By the way, a lived in Germany for 6 months, close to Frankfurt on Main. I loved it but the language at that time was not very appealing to me. Europe is very beautiful, esthetically and culturally and I liked it even more than the US. My husband immigrated to the USA in 90-s from post-soviet Ukraine. We are both Ukrainians and we met in the US. Lived here for a while but had the feeling that this is not our home. Due to the pandemic and loss of our business, we decided to give it a try to live in Ukraine, despite the Russian conflict and economic distress. My family and relatives still live there. We will see how it goes. It might not be the last destination but we want to give it a try for a year or two. We are puzzled about what to bring or whatnot. We decided to ship a few boxes of our stuff (including food) that we might not find there. We will try to keep everything in the boxes unless we use it. If it is not used in 6 months we might just sell it or give it away. We are struggling with our stuff. We are selling, giving away, but also getting other stuff. It is different when you move to Germany you can find pretty much everything, via Amazon/eBay. Unfortunately or fortunately (depends on how to look into that) Amazon and eBay don't deliver to Ukraine. Anyway, I have been binging on your videos because I just love your story, your new simple and almost empty (echoing) home :)) Our story is very similar since I am a hoarder myself and I am trying to change my mindset by watching stories like yours and listening to podcasts on minimalism. It is so hard to change a mindset (growing up in a post-soviet country when you didn't have enough..) But I can see how slowly it is changing me and how differently I look at the "stuff".. In our family I want to keep everything and my husband like: "I am leaving everything behind (not even selling) and taking only two suitcases..." But in reality, out of the 5 suitcases that we take, I occupy only 1 suitcase, the rest is my husband's. I had to ship my stuff because my husband took my suitcases. (he is a tech guy, who is carrying his toys with him). The story of my life.. )

    so I used to think incentivizing my kids in the store to behave was a good idea... I mean... it was only $1 each right? well... then i started to realize, they would ONLY behave for that time frame. When I stopped doing this... it was hard for them at first, and the first few shopping trips were AWEFUL... but then they started to realize i wasn't giving in, and now they ask for things to be on their wish list... which I would also like to stop... but that is a battle for another day.
