It's tomato thinning day and I needed this video for emotional support 😅
🙏
😂 Right there like your baby's 😢
Nooo!! This is how i ended up selling tomato plants every spring. I can never kill them!
I separate and replant as best possible..
I prefer to separate and repot. If they live, they live, (and if I have too many after that, I give them away), and if they don't, then it's off to the nursery for a plant start. But mostly they live. I gave away so many tomatoes and peppers last year & had a couple of friends who were absolutely thrilled to receive not just free plants, but free heirloom plants they couldn't find at a nursery. ❤
Blessed are you.💕
me too! I try to separate everything and have as much seedlings as possible and give the extra ones away to family and friends. I treasure the seeds so much because I don't have that much money and all seeds cost something if you don't happen to own a seed company... I even separate salad seeds (that I pre-grow indoors to get earlier harvest) to carefully place them in rows so that everything has enough space to grow in "cut and come again" style. Now there's no severe frost ahead in 10-day forecast so I think I can put my salads outdoors now that they have germinated...
@@noora7773 This is my thinking, too. I don't want to waste a seed. And I love having extras to give away to family and friends. Last year I gave plants to a couple of friends. This year I've increased that to 4 friends plus my parents, and all because I refuse to cull my precious seedlings.
Just tonight I ran into my neighbour at the grocery store and we struck a deal - she'll trade me some of my dwarf tomato seedlings for some of her raspberry plants. Extra seedlings can be a great thing!
I don't know. In my view, every seed has the potential to produce valuable food - in some cases, quite a lot of valuable food. And these days, that matters quite a lot.
I'm starting to put my lettuces out, too! 😊
I HATE thinning. I want to keep everything that grows. Thanks for the encouragement, Luke!
I have been growing for 30+ years and I still DO NOT have the heart to thin my plants..lol
I didn't know brassica seedlings were prone to failure. I feel so much better knowing I might not be the reason they don't thrive.
I know that's not the point of this video, but it was something I certainly needed to hear! I'm so relieved!
In the back of my mind, I'm thinking 'plant eugenics.'😮 I heard you speaking in Klaus Schwab's voice. I can't do it. I only plant 1 or 2 seeds per container and will up-pot the babies. Truly enjoy your videos.😊
This! ❤
Oregano and basil I plant many of, but then separate together in bundles down the road.
😅
So funny but sadly accurate description of those people
Whoa an incredibly based Klaus Schuab comment in a garden video? People are waking up! You will own nothing, and be happy.
Thinning and pruning is hard, every bit of growth feels like a success to me!
I love the seedlings up against the side of the tray. They are usually easy to pull out & put in their own cell. Just cuz your thinning, doesnt mean something needs to be discarded. I keep my thin outs & double the amount of plants I have. Little secret: more often than not when thinning broccoli the LITTLE one out grows the bigger/"stronger" one...in my experience...so I keep doing it. Need not waste not folks.
Glad I’m not the only one. I replant those that come out easily 😊
My Babies!
I feel you 😂❤
I don’t trim, I transplant. Waste not want not. But I’m retired so I have time to do the labor.
As i sit and watch you while in a lovely environment as your greenhouse, im wearing my migardener tshirt and drinking coffee in my grow big or go home mug...
Im soooo ready to get into the garden with my lil babies growing in my spare room...
I set up 2 shelf units with lights and 7 trays of my little lovelies ❤❤❤
How dare you don't use MIg seeds . 😂 j/k
@@theoneandonly1158 lolols MOST of my seeds are MIG
Perfect timing! I may be a week or 2 late. I'll do this today! Hopefully all is ok. Thank you
Last year instead of thinning I just pulled out the seedling and transplanted it into cups and it worked wonders. I ended up doubling my seedlings by chance.
I am an OLD gardener who hates thinning for many reasons! Yes, you are right, I have to do it if I want nice strong plants. 😩
This is a beautiful video from Gardening with Kirk
Perfect timing for me!! Thanks, Luke!
Always enjoy your videos! Especially today snow and ice. Yesterday I built a new raised bed worked play sand into the native soil then topped off the bed with compost and planted purple asparagus. Today watch gardening videos.
Hi ,I hv ?. I bought play sand on accident, w all info I found ,not recommended. Hv you used playsand before? I already open bag of sand& would like to use it. I'm in zone 5. Ty
@@saraleclerc2455not this brand but it’s what the store had. Luke in his planting video uses play sand. I used it to mix with the native soil because it is clay. If you don’t need sand to help drainage then you may not need it. Planted in almost 8 inches of compost, wanted to give the roots an easier time going down and help drainage.
I can never thin...If I have to..I will just plant them in my yard. if it dies..it dies but I just cannot thin.
I went out and thinned some of my seedlings. It was hard to do! I watched each come up and it was so hard to clip them off. 😮
I was literally telling my husband earlier today about how I either have to, with sorrow, thin my tomato seedlings soon, or have 16 tomato plants... a few too many, as I don't have enough grow light space and just can't use that many or give that many away... ugh... germination rate was too good for the MIgardener seeds, lol! Next year I won't plant so many seeds per cell. I guess I shouldn't complain though because at least they are growing well! 🌱🌱
facebook market them for free or for money than :) i know someone will love getting them :) heck i have no spending money this year to get more seeds, so i went to my library and got some from the seed library :D and been keeping an eye on facebook market for my area too :)
Perfect timing for this video because I just thinned all my seedlings this morning. I also do t up pot my plants so I thinned my 72 cell 1020 tray. Hope I didn’t mess them up. Thinned tomatoes, peppers, and watermelon seedlings that are about 1-2 weeks old
I have a question for you, Luke, your tomatoes and peppers are already out in your greenhouse, what temperature is it in there, day and night? I live in Canada, so I do not dare take them out there yet, but I would love to know what temps you think are ok to bring them out there. Thanks for the great videos! Love them all
Again, a great video. I look forward to you potting them up and fertilizing.
Please vote in your local elections... There have recently been attacks on small farmers and even small vegetable gardeners forbidding or seriously restricting them.
Vote good freedom loving American Patriots who share your values into your local government.
It's getting out of hand! I just pray humanity will soon realize we need less government/three letter agencies to dictate our Source giving freedoms!!! Stand up America!
Yes! Vote for Food Freedom!
I cant thin them i ended up with 40 cabbage plants last year and even more tomatos 😊
Just read through the comments Luke.. Many lovers of life.. They appreciate the tender things in life..
May God protect and guard over them.💕
I do get sentimental about my plants and it's hard, sometimes to thin out but I did it last year and my tomato plants really benefited from it so I highly recommend thinning. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁
Always learn something coming in here. Bought most of my seeds from you this year and so far i'm thrilled with the germination rate! Y'all rock. Thanks for your wisdom and this channel.
I need to thin my celery. I was apparently heavy handed with those seeds!
Thank you for sharing ❤
Do you have/can you do a video talking about how to be successful with red spike amaranth? I had beautiful seedlings last year but they didn’t last long at all. Thanks, love your tips and channel!!
Thank you!! 🙏🙏
I got tired of planting on those trays, now I just plant a bunch of seeds on half gallon containers and I separate them when they graduate to a container of their own or a bigger container, depending on what it is. The trays are time sensitive, with the containers I get a bigger time window to give them a bigger home.
Could you just instead of cutting them would they grow if you pull them out & plant them in another pot ?
Depending on what type of plant it is and how big they are, it can disturb the roots of those staying behind and some absolutely hate that.
I’ve done that with tomatoes and peppers before and had no problem. It works best when the plants are spaced a bit apart in the container and don’t have tangled roots.
You absolutely can, but if you want to avoid disturbing the roots, it can help to soak the soil plug in water and gently tease apart the roots instead of pulling them. I try to salvage the soil as well.
Only if they’re ok with root disturbance.
Charles Dowding has some great videos on multi-sowing seeds and which ones work best
Great advice!💚
You have so many plants ready for warmer days.
I wouldn't say im a beginner but I didlike thinning and do what I can to avoid it. It is a necessary evil in some cases. But typically tomatoes i get seperated and they thrive so that helps. Last year i had way too many tomato plants because they survived. Lol
If the tomato seedling looks good I keep. They are so forgiving I separate and give them their own pot
I planted basil in small cells, and they are pretty dense. Can I just tear the cell apart and break it into a couple bigger containers?
I hav3 done it. Some survived some didn't.
Great vid Luke! Have you ever just bought full grown lemongrass and then plunk them in some water until they put out roots? That's what I do and I get a TON of grass! I've started from seed too, but this way is just so much easier!
This hurt to watch! Since I’m in zone 5b I know I am up potting twice so I rarely do thinning. Didn’t know about brassicas; now I know why I don’t get many. Fourth year putting to grow them; each year they have bolted.
I love thinning, I have a nice little snack with some of the sprouts lol
Amazing info
I knew it was going to be thinning. I never thin.
In fact, the little runt plants get special attention. 😅
More power to those who can do so!
I love ALL MIgardener videos!
Thank you!!!
I struggle with thinning. I only have a small garden so I have enough room to only do one seed per cell.
Also, your glasses are giving Malcolm X, I like ‘em. 👓
I made soil blocks this year, and have been pleasantly surprised by the success I've experienced.
They've made breaking up seedlings a lot easier, with air pruned roots.
Thanks Luke!🌻
You're so welcome!
I absolutely hated thinning this year, but I started growing multiple different types of crops to where I had no choice, but to thin as I went through the process.
Empty cells are my motivation. You can seed a bit more and thin but it’s hard to seed an empty cell and have it catch up. It won’t.
I didn’t thin my carrots last year and my harvest was tiny. I am thinning 1-2” this year and trying to replant the thinned carrots. If they want to live and grow, they will.
The way I’ve been able to reconcile thinning is to eat the thinees as microgreens. Then I don’t feel so guilty.
I’m ruthless. Survival of the fittest, baby.
Luke with plants like Lemon Grass would they get a better grow rate using soil blocking?
niceee right on time with this Luke cause I going to need to thin my marigold seedlings 🌱
Good seeds from MiGardener They all look healthy and was a high germination rate, the crackerjack marigolds 👍
Yes it encouraged me. Still don’t wanna. I can hear them screaming. 😭
You too? I just thinned the lettuce and escarole.
Great video ! Where do I find those clippers you used to thin the plants ?
Ha. Impeccable timing. I just came in from doing a long thinning session. It’s one garden chore I don’t enjoy much. My biggest tip, is to go slow, and have patience when seeding! I try and do one or two seeds tops per cell . Ideally id rather have 70-80% percent germination, a few missing cells, but then not have to come back and thin anything. I didn’t do good last planing, and I’m kicking myself for it. Super important to stay on top of either way
Thanks
Ack that's me, I hate killing little baby seedlings that want to grow. But I'm better this year.
Once true leaves start, do we pinch back any seedlings to make a bushier plant? My neighbors do that and plant the best looking little bushy plants, I'm jealous. 😮
"Fingers in my ears" naaanhaaanaanaanaaah not listening ! 😂
lol 🤣
@migardner is it the same for strawberry seeds in smaller cells are they good in the smaller ones since they grow slower?
I had a seed that floated. But I didnt give up. Put paper towel over it. It sank to the bottom of the glass at 11 hours. Bagged it. It rotted at 3 day mark. Plamted. 2 days later. We need to rethink viability.
seeds are so expensive i dont put more than 2 cell, often just 1 & i save seeds & grow open pollenated crops mostly.
I can't kill mine, I repot the whole lot.
How are your seedlings are short not leggy?
More importantly than any of that, though,...where can I buy those cool snippers?!
Love you and your videos but personally I quit going from tiny to bigger don't have time energy, patience or keep them watered properly. I just plant a whole planter box they live in there as long as they need easy to keep watered and just transplant when or if I choose to. Actually grew cayenne peppers in the boxes last year. No thinning necessary.
It’s the one part of gardening that makes me sad! They’re all my babies😭
I haven’t started my seedlings yet because last year they all got leggy before weather was warm enough to plant. Should I start veggie seeds now or wait a week or two?
Where do you live and what are you growing? It’s best to wait and start your seeds about 4-6 weeks before your last frost of this Winter season. Get seeds growing, thin. Don’t plant in your garden until the soil is workable & warm - especially for tomatoes and peppers. Cool weather crops like kale, radish, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage can go in earlier. Squash, pumpkins & cucumbers a bit later.
Is there a reason you can't just make sure to place only one seed per cell?
Many times with seeds that might have lower germination, 2 seeds are recommended. Also sometimes with seeds you accidentally plant 2-3 seeds unintentionally.
8:50 I think a more productive method to mention is trying to pluck out duplicates for a poor germination. Pluck out cells will multi seedlings to transplant and recover any cells that did not germinate.
Anyone can help me? Ive planted zinnias a some indian blankets in between some veggie rows, is it a good idea? Im hoping to attach polinators.💐🐞🐝
Accuraseed 😉
Interesting concept. I have never had a problem separating multiple plants in the same pots. I usually look for them when I buy starts at the store. All thrive, and as far as I can remember, I have never lost any. I also use larger cells to start my plants. If I end up with more plants than I can accomodate, I am left with 2 choices. Re-home the extra plants or make more space in my garden. I have always done both with good success.
I don't have it in me, I'm sorry. 😭
I am very sad to have to take them out. 😢
Exactly why I plant just 1 seed per cell. 😅
I was wondering about disturbing the other plant. Thanks for replying. I'm gonna watch this video again, I know I have several trays that I should think but I feel like I'm taking a life. But I think Luke is giving me courage by watching him. 😊
@@maryloublouse8578 The plant that's left will definitely benefit so do it. Next year plant 1 per cell. You can tell pretty early which cells aren't germinating so just reseed those cells.
What does “dampening off” mean?
It's a fungal disease that targets seedlings and is common in overly damp soil.
@@eklectiktoni Thx much. What does it look like?
Just for once I disagree. Why multi sow brassicas? These are the ONLY seeds I expect 100% germination. I don't even bother with cells now, just go straight to Costco cups and from there to the garden.
You're a monster. A monster!
I eat meat, yet I can't kill a seedling😳
I accidentally thinned out a few random irises today while trying to divide them. 🥹 The guilt and grief is real!
