He planted beets, carrots, lettuce, radishes, spinach, arugula, parsnips, & cilantro
As a fellow Michigander, I really appreciate your videos. It’s nice to know when I can plant things with our weird weather!!
This Fella is Wonderful. Planting a Garden is like printing MONEY! He would make a wonderful Fed Chair, but would become Board very quickly! Hand Sowed 600 seed Onions the Soil yesterday with the two dogs that tolerate me. Came in contact with one snake, a bee, centipede, cricket, and hordes of Earthworms just a few inches down in the Soil. Oh! did I mention the untold infinite Health Benefits of interacting with Dirt? Priceless! And to think on last Monday morning it was 1 deg F here in Wyoming. Spring is coming.
I learned about high-intensity gardening from this channel and have been doing it for a couple years now. I know it sounds weird at first, particularly when you're used to reading and following the back of a seed pack... but it absolutely works. Try it and you'll understand and never go back.
Also, MIgardner seeds are fantastic and you can't beat the price!
That is awesome! Thank you so much!
I love ALL MIgardener videos!
Thank you!
@@MIgardenerwhat area of Michigan are you in? I’m in Clyde, MI
I am in the South and we planting spring crops. Its amazing to see the other parts of the country weather is like. I love this channel its taught me so much.
I just planted Kale Lettuces Spinach and Carrots today in my Greenstalk ❤
Allegan,Michigan
You can grow carrots in a green stalk?!? Awesome! I want to try that
Thanks Luke for the push to plant now. I put peas in old gutters yesterday in the garden under trellises. I hadn't even thought about starting anything in my beds yet. I will be out tomorrow morning planting in my garden, here in Manistee area, in Northern Michigan.
The yo-yo weather is making me so skittish about planting outside. Snow last Friday; 50F+ today. (I'm in zone 5b)
Zone 5b also, the weather has been crazy. (Northern Maine). Last week I was working cleaning up my garden, today I have snow. 😫
@@nettierg I'm in the Midwest. I'm going for it today with some carrots and a salad mix in a raised bed. 🙈
I'm in 5b as well....UPstate NY -we got two feet last weekend and supposed to get another foot coming Wed-Thur! I'm also a little nervous to put anything Out yet! Crazy weather! 🤪🌱🌨❄🌞🌞My compost is a slimy frozen mess!
@@jodygrindstaff825 @nettierg Black nebula carrots and a salad mix went into a raised bed today (the carrots protected under a board). Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
@@mercurybard9794 Good Luck hunny! I'm still waiting....did get More snow on Thursday -now it's just wet, freezing and miserable outside! Can't wait for Real Spring to come! Thank goodness for the new greenhouse! At least I can pretend (for now) Haahaa!😄
Luke, im from Wisconsin and im here to tell you that is indeed a flurry. Its not a snow shower until it accumulates on the ground.
Great direct sowing tips!
Man I need to expand my garden.. again lol
I rent, and at first I just had the garden beds... Then she let me put raised beds in... Now I'm putting a pollinator strip on the west side of the house and clearing out some old fencing and cleaning up the creekside.
@@RealBradMiller Aye, whatever she’s fine with 👌🤣
@@RealBradMiller if it wasn’t for my wife and dogs, my entire backyard would be a food forest
Luke, you are my favorite ✨🌸✨
I planted carrots, beets, lettuce, turnips, broccoli, snow peas and potatoes outside. In the greenhouse kale from last year is growing great. Happy Spring!!
Thanks to a couple of storms this week in Maine, my beds are under snow again. However, I checked my soil before the snow hit and it was soft and fluffy. My onions and garlic have sprouted so excited.
@MIgardener - I really am on board with pretty much all of this but I grow not that far from you and in a similar climate. I'm trying to resolve the matter of bare soil vs mulched. I get the benefits of mulched soil but there is one... very major problem. As soon as I began mulching... as everyone seems to preach these days.... the soil remained perfect and moist... definitely healthy... Only problem is that it made a perfect habitat for earwigs (and other plant eating pests)... which made a great meal of the (previously) healthy crops. The more the mulch the more they moved in. They destroyed so much. in the end I think I've been better off without a mulch layer and adding more water.... not what I want... but the bugs are ferocious... especially when they have a perfect home under the plant..
I'm wide open to ideas. But mulching for me has been building a habitat for the things that prey on my plants.
I agree the mulch created a breeding ground for me too in my pots last year and I used cedar chips. This year I will just have to be diligent about watering in the hotter days
Hiya, Luke! ❤ Love that you’re out there sowing as snow is drifting about. 😂 Thank you for another enjoyable, motivational video. I will definitely sow something this weekend! 🥰🌱❤️
Just went out and sowed more carrots, radish and Swiss chard!
Luke's got it going! I'm in Zone 5 like you. I plant my parsnips in 2 inch soil blocks. Just because of germination rate. It works well. Just plant the blocks as soon as you see germination to prevent forking. I sometimes do carrots and beets this way too for spacing.
Can we start Swiss Chard now? Or leeks?
My hisband is a farmer, not far from Port Huron. He no till farms.
He has told me that sun needs to get between the rows to avoid fungus and pests that thrive in dark damp places. This avoids the need to use anti fungals and other sprays.
So I understand growing the plants close together, but maybe some sun between the rows may be beneficial?
We are still planting in milkjugs to get a good start outdoors. Zucchini and cucumbers are next. Hope it works so we don't have to drag plants in and out of the breezeway.
This is just the motivation I needed to get out and film the first real garden video of the year!! Thanks for the constant uploads! You’ve inspired me to try my best to be more consistent!🌿🫶🏼
And thank you for reassuring me I can grow everything everyone says I can’t outside my apartment! Can’t wait to show everyone!🌿
My garden beds and compost pile are under snow but, it's melting.
Michigan weather be Michiganing lol... I'm in Indiana, but less than 100 miles from Lake Michigan, so I get it!
I grew up in the Detroit area so I know all about that weather. My husband and I moved down to Ohio and it is not much different.
I love watching (listening) to your videos while I'm working, makes for a great day and you describe well
Thank you! This video takes away some off the mystery as to what to plant hear in this early Spring.
That baby amount of snow is cute 😂 i wouldn't even consider that a flurry where im at in alberta Canada
Just purchased our first batch of seeds from yall. Should get them any day. Looking forward to it. Thanks for all of the knowledge throughout the years. I've earned so much from this channel
Thanks for sharing, Luke! It's encouraging to watch.
Is 3b/4a too cold for this? Also, I am starting raised rows(raised without the boards) can I simply put down 6-8inches of hay then top it with compost and plant as you did?
Just planted cool weather crops today
Are you getting snow today. We are in Luce County. Rain later and snow after that. Our last frost date is June 12th.
I enjoy watching your videos even if it doesn't apply due to my different growing zone!!!!
Hard to argue it's to early with someone planting while it's snowing😂
I sewed a bunch of Siri g seeds today as well. Indiana. Zone 6a. At least it wasn’t snowing here. 🤭
can you use green leaves from a tree as mulch for plants
Awesome!
Man time for me to start the garden next week.
Do you water after planting? new MN gardener here.
Thankyou!!!!!!!!
Thank You
Thank you, Luke. 😊
Hold up, can I put out my seedlings? Now? Thanks for the video, Il put some herbs along with the beet seedlings and arugula and lettuce seeds, I am in the same zone, Charleston West Virginia
Thank again Luke Grow Big __ __ ____, our bigger.❤😊
Definitely learned from you today!
So tempted to do this with the odd weather this spring but know I got a couple weeks before I can seed in ground as it’s still to cold here. Getting beds all ready to go so when time comes we can hit the ground running
Thank you Luke
Hey, I'm freaking out waiting for those raspberry plants.I hope there are plenty
I love MIGardener and MIGardener seeds. Such great germination since they were in the small ziplock bags.
Love your videos! Such great content and great advice 💚💚💚
When I buy MI Gardener seeds, is the recommended plant spacing already adjusted for high intensity densities or is it traditional less intense spacing?
Good idea thank
Sounds great I’m waiting patiently now from seeds I ordered from you guys I’m excited for when they finally arrive to get gardening started for 24 seasons..

Hello to all Michigander. I live in Macomb county. Where can i find good compost for my raised beds that doesn't come in bags?
I'd like to know also
I just came in from planting the majority you mentioned. S. Of Lansing mi too. So excited to play in the soil.
Yay! Happy gardening!
Question: do you water these seeds now, or do you wait to water? I live in NJ with similar weather as MI and I wasn’t sure if I should water now or not. Thanks Luke!
Lol “tomorrow will be bathing suits!” Yep
Starting seeds this weekend! But will try planting some things in tje garden next week too and see if they will come up! Thank you for this one! Love your seeds by the way! Buy most all my seed from you!
Wishing this came out yesterday with all the sunshine we had today but forecast cold made me nervous about planting. Maybe the rain will hold out tomorrow and i can still get some seeds in the ground. Thanks for the motivating.
I am in upstate NY and our weather is as unpredictable as Michigan 😂. Will try to put in spinach and carrots this week. And peas. Ground is usually too frozen to work it but mild winter this year has ne accelerating my plans despite my age slowing me down. Rain expected all week but perfect temperatures for these crops.
HaaHaaa....I don't know where in NY you are-but we got 2 Feet of snow last weekend in the Adirondacks and another 6inches+++ Thursday then freezing rain ever since :( ground is a frozen, wet soggy mess! I can't wait for Real Spring to come!
Was out getting my deer fence started today. I wont lose to them this year
Still a little early here for some of the things you planted. But I have started a new asparagus bed a week ago and today inter planted some strawberries in the bed.
Went to a Seed Exchange today... I'm ready to get started!
Happy gardening!
Curious about your take on the approach of covering where carrot seeds are planted with boards, or cardboard?
Also, it would appear that you did/do not pre-soak your parsnip seeds?
I have radishes sprouting from when I planted them...3 weeks ago. Yeah, I know...but hey, they started! So unfortunate the snow, but at least it's some moisture.
Can you plant parsnip in a pot indoors ,love your videos very helpful
Do we have the same climate? I live in South Central Kansas.
How early is too early to sow some of these crops? I'm in Michigan, we're still high 20/low 30s at night and high 30s/low 40s during the day. I'm hesitant to start things like broccoli or carrots just yet
I'm in S.E. MI and will be transplanting lettuce and other leafy greens out this weekend. I also plan to sow some radishes.
He’s in Michigan, and it is snowing in the video. These crops are supposed to be cold-hardy, so probably in the next 1-3 weeks at most.
(I’m in SW PA, zone 6A. I’m not quite as brave as he’s being about starting that early!)
@ MIGardner ...Ok so many questions. This will be my 2nd year trying to grow. Last year was mostly failures and I am trying to learn from those mistake. I tried lettuce in a kiddie pool but the seeds barely germinated. The rows were about 6 inches apart but seeds very close. Maybe it was over crowded? could have been lack of nutrients in soil as I had watermelon in the space prior which could have taken all the nutrient out of the soil? The 4 watermelon plants didnt grow either. The largest only got to about a tennis ball size but then burst. Had 16 bush bean plant and only had a few small handful on beans....tomatoes never produced....however the start I have so far this year seem healthy. I bought 3 or 4 variety from you guys so we will see how that goes. Even my multiple attempts at radish never produced anything but a few woody small radish.
Great video !!! 😊I don't make compost I live in an apartment ... what brand is good to buy ?
Luke can you do a video on building a cold frame, help us get stats out sooner. Thx Tim
We have one in a cold frame :) about 4-5 years ago
Woot! First! 💚🌱
Yes you are!
@@MIgardener we are still frozen solid here in Ontario. List ready to roll.
I'm trying to find out about putting alfalfa pellets on the garden. They use herbicides on alfalfa including roundup ready. Do you use it?
Luke when do you plant your peas?
In about a week or two.
I always plant pea on good Friday, from south Michigan
In Michigan when do you start rutabaga?
Luke Can I start with my bak choy now thanks
can you do a garlic in the spring video? I've never done garlic before and planted in the fall and am FULL OF GLEE that it is coming up! what do I do now? mulch or no?
Mine is coming up (6 inches tall now) and I leave them until July when I harvest it. You amend the soil when you replant in the fall I do that on October. Hope this helps.
Is there a book on high intensity spacing? I’m aware of “square foot gardening”, is that the same??
I’m a new gardener so I’m learning a lot from you.
I’m just wondering if there are any books I can buy that discuss your method. I’d like to buy a book. You should write a book on if there isn’t one out yet. I see how successful you are with your methods 😊
What did you use for those beds are they 1x6 or 1x8 that's what they look like? Was looking to make a few beds this year and those would be awesome.
How do you keep squirrels and other nuisances out of your garden without having a fenced in yard?
That's what I want to know, too.
A fenced yard won’t help, but fencing around each bed has kept the deer and woodchucks out of mine. I put it all the way around and zip tied it to stakes EXCEPT for the last section. Make the last section long enough to overlap the first stake. Use the end of the overlap to “hook” it closed like a gate, so you can get in and out.
Great show. Can I plant pansy flowers (bought at store) outside right now in zone 6a? And can I direct sow pansy seeds right now also?
Yes, absolutely
Hi can you sell some single plants of the double gold and are the royal raspberries gone already?
Hey Lukey Luke!
Heyo!
I'm confused... In this video you are planting carrot seeds in March. In your video last August about carrots, you said the best time to plant was late May/early June. So which is it?
This is my second year of using my greenhouse, and am trying to estimate what “zone” it is. I think it’s not too far from what your outdoor temps are there. Would I be okay to start these in the greenhouse? I can keep the temp in there above freezing most nights. Outdoors I’m in zone 4a and there’s still a lot of snow on the ground.
Why not sprinkle the lettuce across the top of the whole bed?
Thanks for showing the process ❤💪🙏 Makes me want to order more seeds Of Course!😉 Spring Fever Kicking In.🤒💻👀🌷☕🎊So Ready for Sun. 😎🌞
I. bought Slobolt, Bronze Mignonette, Red Romaine, and Oakleaf lettuce seeds from your online store a couple months ago. Are these good for dense spacing in this video? What lettuce cultivar did you sow in this video? Thank you.
It would’ve been nice to see how all of those small/short root crops would have survived in a Greenstalk instead of herbs and lettuces, which would obviously survive in a Greenstalk. I don’t think they require a lot of sunlight, so maybe the indoor grow lights would work as well. I saw a video the other day of someone planting zucchini and peas, etc in her Greenstalk. The roots seem to be coming out so those crops would probably not be healthy over a period of time, although hers looked OK. Those small root vegetables, even onions, I think would be OK in a Greenstalk. The challenge is mimicking the soil from the ground when it comes to potted plants.
QUESTION: do you hook your hoses back up at this time of year to water these frost-tolerant plants? I'm afraid I'll get a frozen/busted faucet, so I never plant early enough.
Just disconnect the hose after you are done and you will be good to go
I bought the coco coir with perlite. Can I use it for the outdoor bed or is it not best?
3rd time starting seeds, keep getting gnats
:(
Thanks so much, Luke!
Mosquito Dunks in your watering can, even crumbled and mixed in the soil, for the larvae, and yellow sticky traps for the adults, but only indoors, will catch good insects outside.
Coco coir with perlite will be fine if moistened and mixed in to soil, or planted with plugs of seedlings... But laid on top dry or even wet, will quickly blow away.
@@RealBradMillerthank you!
@GPDarius a video is posted here just recently where he discusses many ways to to control them. Eggs in the soil ,not to far down - advices sand on top layer. Check the video out its in depth.
@@gferraro8353will do-thanks!
Low 30s at night mid 40s day good time to plant carrots?
A great time.
@MIgardener thanks. I'm in SE wisconsin. Alot of rain next 4 days. Too much rain bad for carrot seeds? Or would thru be fine under some cardboard? Thanks!
@MIgardener I had no clue! 3rd year gardening and second year doing carrots. All my reading up on carrots last yr and I never came across how much they love cold weather! Unreal! Amazing videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Cheers
We're in Lapeer. Where do you get your compost from?
What about peas? Is it too early?
I kept thinking you were meowing, until I realized you were saying "ya know" 😅 12:15 all I hear is meow 🐱
can you direct sow cilantro right now (same climate)
Absolutely!
Don’t know if it’s genetic like cilantro tasting like soap, but arugula tastes like Diesel fumes to me. It’s so bad I don’t want to smell them.
Cilantro and the brown marmorated stinkbugs smell the same. Nasturtiums when crushed smell like fuel to me.
Arugula has that bitter, spicy, fuel taste to me, too. I wondered if that was from heat or watering stress.
Are you not worried it will freeze again? Or will they be ok if it gets below freezing?
They will be ok
They will be totally fine. Probably healthier actually!
@@MIgardener thanks Luke. I live in SD and we are expecting a couple inches of snow tomorrow and then We’ll be in the 40-60 range for awhile but it will definitely be freezing some nights. Love your videos!
