  • Starship IFT-4 is less than a week away!
    The goal for this flight will be to survive reentry.
    IFT-3 proved orbital velocity, but SpaceX is aiming for SN29/B11 to have a targeted spalsh down in the Indian Ocean.
    Leave a comment with your prediction for this monumental 4th flight!

      Ellie, are you aware that there's two sets of island in the Indian Ocean where it may be possible to view Starships planned re-entry point? One is Diego Garcia, which is a UK territory that is solely used by the US Navy as a major base of operations,... so no chance of going there to watch.
      The other is called the "Cocos (Keeling) Islands", it's an Australian territory, but not too many hours flight from Indonesia. Sadly I don't have the means to get from the other side of Australia to an island off our west coast with my camera and live stream gear, but maybe if we put the word out, someone in that area might have enough gear to film and upload the re-entry!

    SpaceX is 0/3. The heatshield is the critical point of failure and is likely to remain so for any reuseable rocket. It may take new technology to solve the heatshield issue. Starship will never achieve fast turnaround with a tiled system as all the tiles will need to be checked before any relaunch just like the space shuttle.

    The tiles are a problem, and taking into account that the vehicle is built from steel, not aluminum, part of the NASA achievements do not apply. Clearly, the space shuttle was doing far better. The vibration was far more severe (solid busters) and the tiles did not fall the way they do on a starship. Starship also has the worst possible shape for the tiles to stay put on this side of a sphere or a random shape. The other point is the insistence or increasing the cargo capabilities of the Starship. If you want something cheap increase security margins and leeway. Build a truck not an F-1 Ferrari. We barely have loads heavy enough for the Falcon Heavy. Cut the mass to LEO by half and use that to create a secure TPS and a proper scape pod.

    • @Asterra2
      @Asterra2 4 місяці тому +1

      The industry is already adjusting to the reality of 100+ tons and a 9 meter hull. There are at least three different space stations in the works, all of which are depending on being able to take advantage of all that room and payload capacity. Fast forward five years and the entire idea of having to design satellites that meet certain weight specs and require intricate folding will be absolutely quaint. Also keep in mind that SpaceX are primarily designing Starship for themselves. HLS is a side job; space station lifts for customers will be a cute bonus; even the military's interest in the ship's capabilities will be secondary.

  • @patrickmcginnis7

    No it will not. I have 0 confidence in the leading-edge tiles or control surfaces. The flex of the main body is too much. Last launch it didn't even look like the starship knew which was was up and couldn't correct even tho it looked like it tried at one point. They'd better get back at least the booster this time. So my answer is no. I'm not a SpaceX hater by any means. #1 I think they need some old school programmers like myself, and #2 probably need nVidea as a partner for better sims, and #3 re-engineer the platform. I mean u got... booster )engines{fuels}nose How much protection does a payload need? re-engineer the payload part of the cylinder, or make the cylinder part of the delivery to orbit, just return the parts u need: booster, then engines+fuel+nose. They'd have better luck launching a Godzilla sized turtle. there u go - Starship 5 GoTurtle and let it bounce off the atmosphere a couple times just for fun. ;)

    I think it'll reach orbit (if the motors do not ignore the mission and come apart in flight) but I am skeptical of re-entry. That's a different job that the rocket hasn't had to endure totally yet.

    Traction on UA-cam will be hard because everyone is doing Tesla and SpaceX updates. If you’re going to be Ellie in space, cover all of space. Like Scott manley or Fraser Cain, if you’re trying to be like Marcus house or what about it I just don’t think you could take that audience. But you have to have passion for it, if it’s just another praise musk channel they’re everywhere. Starship development is going to take place for the rest of the 2020’s, people will slowly lose interest. Falcon 9 launches get hardly any interest unless it’s a crewed launch and starship might launch 4 times a year. It’s just a lot of dead space to fill with speculation and repetition.
    Just my thoughts, I subscribed because I like the short and sweet approach.

  • @Asterra2
    @Asterra2 4 місяці тому +1

    Quick guess: Almost certainly not. IFT1, IFT2 and IFT3 all met their key goals. But the key goal in IFT4 is to survive maximum heating during reentry. Because this is completely contingent on there being zero missing tiles, I simply do not see it happening. SpaceX hasn't done anything new with the tiles. It's presumably something they'll begin addressing in earnest with the Block 2 prototypes. Anyway, this just about guarantees tiles will fall off in the usual places, such as around seams where they're merely glued on. All this having been said, they probably already know all this, and are basically sacrificing one of the two remaining Block 1 crafts just to see what reentry can do to a craft missing tiles. I hope they have an internal camera set up for it!

    It would be mindboggling/awesome if we get video of Flight test 4 all the way through re-entry.
    I think Ship 29 will make it through re-entry as long as it has good attitude control/in correct orientation during re-entry and most/key heat tiles stay on. However I have concerns with possible fuel issues preventing the engines re-lighting properly for the flip maneuve/landing burn.
    The flip has never been done with a raptor 2 engine.

    Funny how much Ellie looks like a Texas girl....🤭
    I think they will do better on re entry this time, heard Elon describe whats required, and not doing a re entry burn also gives me a clue.
    Basically if they nudge it downwards with thrusters in the coast phase, should get some air resistance in very thin air, and numbers drop from near orbital velocity.
    Thin air, less molecules, over more time/distance means less heat, but if you are doing a long distance,
    that resistance would add up over time, and result in reduced velocity. Without ever over heating.
    Basically a ratio of velocity versus air density to create drag.
    if that is tried, the next step would to be give the ships increased lifting area, and control surfaces for that kind of flight. So the high altitude could be extended longer via glide ratio against gravity.
    Have to wait and see, but every little bit helps, and less intense heat would mean more options on heat shield.
    Also thinner air less likely to rip off tiles... or other shield surfaces.
    And less heat intensity less thermal expansion differential with the hull.

    The booster will be relatively easily reusable but any vehicle with heat shields will not be rapidly reusable. They're going to need way more shots than boosters to maintain a rapid launch cadence.

    Very happy to hear that you’ll be there for the fourth flight. In a couple of years, it will be like catching a bus.

    I stay at Margaritaville and toured Boca Chica. It was an awesome experience. I did not have the money to stay until the launch.

    You know what a fairing stay bracket is? Its a structure added to the main structure so that you can attach more things. I think the Heat tiles will need more than just pins. It needs its own version of a fairing stay bracket, It will be structural just like the frame of the Starship but not nearly as strong. It only needs to be strong enough to hold the tiles in place. It would add considerable weight but it would also make those tiles far more reliable. Imagine being able to remove all the heatshield in one shot because they are all attached to the fairing Stay Bracket and the entire Bracket can be removed from the Starship. This might be the way to go.

    Hi Ellie. I know what these heat tiles look like on the Star ship. What do the other heat tiles look like on other SpaceX ships.

      @@codetech5598 somehow we managed to get there in 1969 with one rocket. Now it takes one rocket plus 12 other rockets full of extra fuel. I don't get it.

      @@dupre7416 Well, the NASA explanation is that they took risks and cut corners in 1969 in order to get to the Moon before 1970 as JFK promised. They will say that now they want to be extra careful and also bring extra baggage so now they need more fuel, etc.

    Nice update. The two objectives: hover the booster over the gulf landing spot until it runs out of fuel, and have the Starship survive re-entry and maybe soft-land in the Indian Ocean. And do all of this without injuring stage zero.
