    I think I know a lot about what makes a portfolio successful in the eyes of employers by now, but the problem I'm facing is that I feel almost chained when I primarily try to make art *for my portfolio* I become this perfectionist and I don't want to make mistakes so I either don't even start or just make really bad images...

      Ive been there where you loose all motivation and you feel your art is worsening.
      What i found was 2 things were happening physically and 1 thing was happening mentally. The first 2 was you were probably rushing the bad images due to feeling your going to produce bad work so your wasting your time so you might as well rush but THATS what makes the bad work. The second is because your probably not creating art frequently your skill might be getting rusty too.
      The mental thing was you had probably lost love and passion for your art, for the next few weeks only draw things you want and use plenty of references as well allow your self to almost start from square 1 and build up.
      A side note is you might be in a situation that might be killing your motivation as well for me it was the university i was at. Second i left the passion came flooding back. Put your self in a position to be inspired.
      Of course it might be different for you but this was what happened to me and it was agonising but there is a way back to it just dont give up

      I am in a college that I didn't want to pursue as well, and I feel like I got no community around me that is even slightly interested in what I do.
      I worked for DC Comics just so recently as a Coloring artist and everyone is impressed with my work, however I want to go work into the animation industry and this industry requires me to master my draftsmanship of 'Drawing' and not necessarily painting.. and whenever I try to make a character sheet so I could start making my stories come to life... I just get stuck and stop.
      Just yesterday I found a channel on youtube that inspired me to go back and read the Andrew loomis books because I've noticed that I suck at posing character (even though I've studied tons of real life references) so, I was convinced that I really need to take it slow and start from ground zero again.

      @@ameyjoshi225 same. I had a professor that told me something similar to what Tyler said above. It doesn’t need to be perfect, just make sure you feel good about it and move on

    I went through a phase that lasted years and not finishing my artwork. Turn out doing iterations was slowing me down. I went back to trusting my gut and creating one version of my vision and now I can finish my work. I already work full time as a teacher and already sleep only 5 hours a day and barely have time to do my artwork. Don't waste your time doing iterations if you are doing art for yourself.

    ah so, in short, u have to show your rendered finished artworks and the drafts and sketches on how you planned it, so that they could instantly know how capable and skilled u are

    I would say my "RPG" role is the painter, but I've noticed that a lack of design skills hurts my painting portfolio as well. I get compliments on my rendering but never get call backs or lose the job to other artists more shape heavy than me. Concept art skills still need to be showcased if you're just painting. It all feeds together.

    I stan for this man for having a Xenoblade wallpaper. And thank you for sharing us these great advices and tipps. This video is very informative and helpful for those who wants to improve on or encourage to submit their portfolio. It is better to convey and show the essence and/or what they really good at to the employers rather than having a "perfect" portfolio, even tho their art may look wobbly or unfinished. For me this mindset is better and healthier than striving for, like I said, a "perfect" portfolio.

    This is the video I'm going to watch often to memorize those advices and check if I'm following them well. I found it very informative. I'm currently working on my portfolio, children's book illustration . Although it is different than doing concept art, the values are similar: show how you solve problems, show your thought process, present your style and be consistent in it.

    *_Most portfolios don't really require any restrictions. Most of my work is inclined to Anime, not so much to realism. If I did do a bit of realism, expect it to be just a hobby, because that's not what I intend to go for naturally._*
    *_If anyone is struggling with making one, don't be afraid to show what you can do, even if it ain't perfect. We all have diverse styles._*

      I agree with you on that! I've started learning photorealism and now that I'm getting further into it, anime seems far more daunting. I used to mistake it's design simplicity for how easy it was. I see now I couldn't have been more incorrect because there is so much technique and subtle details in each frame. Yeah every style has its own learning curve and focal points.

    “Kill your darlings” sentiment; don’t just go with the first iteration, even if you eventually choose the first design, don’t settle for the first design.

    17:02 THANK YOU! I’m a GREAT idea person, but I’ve always wondered Why all the iterations?? I know this one is Great! (Because I have a great eye in art and composition) But a client wanting a gun, for instance, yes! I can pump out TONS of ideas for shooters. That makes everything a lot clearer. I’m great at drawing characters, but I think because they’re mine, I KNow what design they should have. But, for a job, I need to stop thinking like that. For instance, I need to think “I need a rabbit character.” I need to make tons of iterations of the BASE idea! Took a lifetime for me to GET THAT! 🤦🏽‍♀️🤣🤣

    Great tips! I've always felt that I was an idea person, but didn't think I could ever be that person without strong skills in everything else. In college, friends always came to me if they were stuck because they knew we could bounce ideas around for ages. What can I do to work towards being a better idea person? And what kind of job position would that be?

      Well it’s a concept art position so you would be tasks with doing draw overs, call outs, iterations and endless sheets of ideas!

    My biggest struggle is knowing how to market my work/kind of art.
    I understand solving a problem, but I struggle to understand the real world application. What exactly does that look like?
    I gave up trying to make a living from my art because there was always that disconnect for me.

    Thanks alot for this video. Im also going through the same experience with trying to find my first job in the industry. One of my biggest problem is consistency. How can I have my work consistent when every piece is rejected? how do I know which one is suppose to be appealing to the employer. its sounds like a stupid question but this is an exhausting period when you're constantly criticized and rejected while following every bit of advice

      You never know which one will be the most appealing . Images will hold appeal to different people. You have to make lots of work and aim to improve a small amount each time. For consistency try emulating a successful process by a professional. Get a good tutorial follow it through and implement it. Then do that again dozens of times. Stick to 2-3 different subjects or genres so you can measure your improvement. When yo sure stuck join a good community and get feedback.

    here's what I catch:
    *Consistency: The first one being consistency is not without reason, show an artwork that is consistent like the art style
    *Intention: Having a backup idea/alternative idea with what you're working on. For example, planes. Have a different angle of the plane, how the design is like that
    *Process: this one is not a doubt, you HAVE to show them the step-by-step process of creating the artwork you've shown, so the viewer can really tell, you're the one making it, not AI
    *Adapt: Show an artwork that is flexible with all design language (idk but I think this one contradicts with the first one)

    Thanks for the video, I will have this tips in mind when making a portfolio but I still have a doubt in my mind, how many projects should I put in my portfolio if I'm just starting? Should I post everything I work, even if is just the donut 3d render or should I just post the more complex ones at the risk of making my portfolio to smol in comparison but more professional looking?

      At least 3 projects with 7-10 images. Do not put the blender donut in it for all reasons I mentioned

    I'm a game art student starting my second semester now. In the summer I have about 1 month where I have nothing planned and I wonder if you can give a tip what would give me a lot of value. Should I search for a short internship or should I take up a bigger personal project or something else? I wanna go in the concept art direction. Thank you very much.

    What if you had multiple themes or interests? Let's say I love robots, but I also love dragons and environment design. I don't see dragons and mechs meshing well together, so putting them in the same portfolio might show that lack of consistency. Would it be better to make multiple portfolios and tailor those to a specific niche to better market yourself?

      If you apply to a studio you need to tailor the portfolio on a company basis. Otherwise have a general one where you can get selected. Ultimately it doesn’t matter how many genres you have, if the quality is good and consistent that matters most

      Mech dragons fam, mech dragons.....thats a fairly novel idea
      So mech dragon in a futuristic, or fantasy, or steampunk, etc environment
      Try to somehow bring believability to the concept of a robot dragon;
      .designing exactly how the wings connect to move in a similar way as a dragon
      .or how the fire breathing gets translated as a big cannon/laser,
      .or sonic or thermal radar (real vs techno),
      .or since its a robot, the tail is gonna do much more that a regular dragon.
      Honestly now that i think about it, how did you miss what a great project this could be? An idea like this would be epic. And you can do it! Cause i sure as hell cant draw a dragon or robots-

    my uni teachers say that it doesn't really matter if it's good or not they just want to see the progress , which kinda contradicts what you're saying about how our portofolio should include good amazing work. any advice on what to actually include in the portofolio? thank you so much by the way

      Put your best work in, old work that doesn’t showcase you at your current skill set would be a disservice. I hire artists regularly and personally seeing their progression is one of the last things I’m interested in.

    I will probably never have a portfolio. I am not a perfectionist, but I unfortunately I know how certain things work on an engineering standpoint and a biological standpoint. Knowing that the ship, building, etc. I designed has flaws in it that makes it impractical eats at me. Then I get stuck asking questions about how something would work with something else, instead of thinking about it visually. I remember when I was younger, I did not have this problem.
    For example, Bioshock 3 has a beautiful world...but is it really possible to have something like that up in the sky? My practicality is killing my creativity. Hopefully I find a way to reconcile those. I have a great sci-fi story to tell. Maybe I am overloading myself right now. I'll hold back on that one and start with one down to earth with simple space that doesn't stray to far from relatability.

      well then the workflow that comes to mind is to build out from some core idea// technology. I'm no expert this is really just a random idea but what i would do is find a Problem.
      For instance you have a colony on two floating islands, one has food the other has industry, how do you connect these with a transportation vehicle.
      Well you might come up with an Airship, okay but an Airship needs a harbour and needs to be built, how does that work. Okay so if they have technology X can they use it to solve problem Y. If you want to work in the confines of engineering just create some fantasy materials that enable you to become creative. Say this one place has a super food that lets you work tirelessly for 24hrs without a break but can only be made in this one village, how does that change a culture.

      No matter what I do, I just publish it and let people decide if it's good or not. My main job is to create, not really appreciate it. Creating it is hard enough to let it go to waste and there is a lot of popular stuff of the same type of less quality anyway.

      You should let go of some of that "need to be real and accurate" concept design, like animation, is an illusion. Animation is the illustration of life because its about making the viewer BELIEVE that that chair is actually alive, then you delve into how it would look/act as a living being. Obviously chairs dont do that, but thats not important. The same with concept design. No one is watching star wars to be able build their own spaceship, they are just interested in the idea of a spaceship being entertained. A GENERAL idea of its logistics is all that is needed. Not the actual mathematical and physics based calculations. Concept design is like the design stages of architecture or engineering; it doesnt have to actually make sense, just look like it makes sense. You can use ur background to make it look like it makes sense more than some others, you just dont need to make it applical to the real world. We arent making spaceships anytime soon, fam. Believability! Not actual realism.

      I think the ability to simplify reality is one of the hardest things about being a concept artist. It also connects to the same ability in painting. Then using that core simplified knowledge and stretching it to fit your imagination

    I’m still confused about what problem solving means in concept art, is it about functionality, design, or aesthetic? Perhaps all of the above to clearly state an idea that solves all 3 categories essential for world building??

    You mentioned AI and flooding the market. I have a design background, specifically in 3D, but I am fascinated with AI and have been deep diving into it for the past year. AI does require a lot of consideration in its final output. Given the current technology, why wouldn't AI prompting be valuable in today's design industry? If you can achieve the same goal more quickly and generate multiple ideas simultaneously, could that be a part of my design journey? I believe it takes significant skill to create something new and interesting with the assistance of A.i & will be an extremely valuable skill moving forward

    im only 4 minutes into this video, but what? i'm so confused. i've been taught its better to have a diverse portfolio so that clients can see your versatility. maybe that's why i can't find work.

    Personally I think a portfolio musnt contain sketches if your sketches are messy and ugly. Lets be fair no one likes that.

    its incredible ridiculous that you are trying to be a super talented Artist and you can not have something that's not great but still not terrible in your portfolio and you are not going to get a job. after 10 years of grinding a gave up trying to become a 3D artist and stopped even enjoying to make 3d art after all of this ridiculous art test and how are you even supost to have time to do all that super polished work when you have a kid a job and not even life. My advice do art for you and if you get a job is just a bonus

      There’s literally dozens in the same position of that person. And because they needed so much help and allows to breakdown the examples. You can’t make the same points on a portfolio that is great and ready.

I am not in the industry, kinda self-taught, but I have a master's degree in arts.
