This is not only a prime example of sheer greed but just as bad is the damage it will do to other genuine charities who will have lost the trust of some of their donors .
His daughter and her husband are an utter disgrace and for me they have been treated leniently while deserving every bit of criticism they receive.

I agree that they shouldn't receive an 'incredibly high' salary, but the people running charities still need remuneration for their time, don't they?

@@stevie-c1471 The original commenter said "I won't donate just to pay the CEO's salary". I was pointing out that it is in fact reasonable for part of any donation made to a charity to go towards paying the charity's staff.

She wanted £150k as a charity director because that's the going rate for one in the UK. It's why I only give money to small local charities. I don't want my donation going to the salary of some " captain of industry" brought in to run a charity.

Here in Sweden I remember the head of the Red Cross was picking up a huge salary. Why do they need to pay, isn’t there any retired top manager that wants to show some goodwill late in life after building a fortune. Isn’t there a single one that can do that for two years and then pass it on to the next one?
Wouldn’t that be nice in the UK too.

@@bokhans: In the Netherlands the blood bank chariry hired some doctor as head for more than 200k euro per year. There was outrage about that... But it doesn't really change and happens everywhere.

If the books were marketed as in support of the Sir Tom Moore Foundation, but no money went to it, surely that is at least obtaining money by deception? It can’t be right that his daughter is allowed to walk away with £1.5 million.

By removing charitable status the crown can tax the funds as income. By prosecuting for fraud or lesser crimes, the public can seize the funds, yes. Successful prosecution could lead to jail for fraud i suppose but unlikely. That's why the allegations from the report that they have damaged trust in charities is so important.

I would have no issue with his family benefitting from the proceeds of his book after his death if it wasn't for the fact that it was marketed as a book that would be raising money for his charity and they've kept all of the proceeds for themselves. Not to even offer a contribution to charity in the face of all this scrutiny shows how brazen they are.

I thought when seeing her, particularly when she became more assertive in media appearances, ‘she has the look of Janice from The Sopranos’, the grasping sister of mob boss Tony.
What also sticks in the craw are the ‘disgusted’ headlines by the UK tabloids, where were they and their claims of seekers of truth and investigation?
Imagine if anyone had, really prior to the whole spa issue, raised any concerns.
Especially if anyone or organization that they don’t like did so (which is most of them), they would have vilified and got death threats from the deranged who believe these rags.

I worked in the charity sector for more than 20y, lastly as a non-financial auditor, boards snd trustees do make mistakes as the lady says, it would have been "cleaner" if the family had had as little hands on involvement as possible. In terms of obscenely high salaries, in my experience there were people like myself, who accepted a lower salary to work in the charity sector, when high numbers of ex-local authority officers and ex-civil servants became involved huge amounts of empire building went on, several layers of additional management were created and then the cronyism began.

He wrote the books. Knew what was what, and was happy for the money from them to go to the family, as a kind of spin-off of his charity efforts, and his capturing the zeitgeist. He'd have seen and signed the contracts - by all accounts, he was compos mentis. That's a plausible account, I think.
Now, had they just made the single donation of his charity monies raised, and not created the Foundation, they could have quietly pocketed the book money. People without a charitable bone in their bodies suddenly creating a charity - yeah right!

I believe the NHS received £39 million for Capt Tom‘s effort? That’s a tidy Sum and well done, wherever that went is anybody’s guess. The family wrote a book on the efforts of them and Capt Tom, a family history, a family life. Therefore the family has every right to claim the money from the Books. Like Captain Tom, I would want to see my family honoured and protected by mine and their efforts. The book like any book went for sale and people bought the book obviously they wanted to read their story.
Their are countless allegations of ministers lining their pockets during the Covid fiasco and that was taxpayers money. 😂
