One Guitar: Six Tunings | Fylde Ariel

- Hi folks! So, people often ask me about my Fylde Ariel, particularly regarding how it fairs in various tunings. Short answer: very well! But I thought a little video compilation may be quite a fun way of illustrating it. What do you reckon? It could even become a little series with me doing a similar approach for other guitars. Do you have a favourite tuning in this collection?
This Ariel of mine is in Redwood with Italian Acacia (and the neck is made from an old snooker table!)

Surprised at how well the intonation remained in the low Cmaj7 and B tunings. Is it a short or long scale guitar? Your tone is as lush as always, the guitar sounds like a bigger instrument than it appears to be.
Cheers Don - and yeah the intonation is pretty satisfying across the board. Of course a light touch on the left hand required... particularly as this is indeed a shorter scale instrument. But the result is an epic sounding, tiny guitar!

Hello sir, what do you make of sapele Vs mahogany as a back wood?
I love mahogany's thrumming mid range and it's warmth and character & sustain. The mid range hump can make everything sound "country"
Sapele's even EQ and sparkling trebles make it applicable to a wider range of styles imo and although not as warm as mahogany, the trebles shimmer in a way that I think really benefits fingerstyle.
Anyway, thought would be good to get a great guitarists thoughts on this
Ive been offered one but as a finger strummer and some time finger style it would be wasted, maybe a J 45 or the LG series but at 72 it seems to require and deserve a player.well played Will delightful
Thanks John, appreciate the kind words. They’re fine guitars in numerous settings, I find. Quite a few songwriters seem to favour them for strumming work as well! Versatile little beauties =)
I love listening to you play and I've been experimenting with different tunings. I wonder how you keep track of the notes in your head with so many different tunings? Are you picturing the notes themselves or is it the shapes that you remember? It's pretty mind boggling to me.
Hi Kim, thanks kindly. And yes alternate tunings are great fun to explore. I’d say there’s a bit of that going on during the composition process, but as I memorise the pieces it’s not so much about remembering specific note names. I certainly wouldn’t be able to sight-read notation in Open B - that’s for sure! 😅
Very lovely! How & why were the interesting woods selected for your guitar? Were they your choice or Fylde’s? They aren’t the standard woods for this model.
Thanks Bill! They were my choice, yes. I had been quite taken by these Ariels for a while, and had an opportunity to play a few up at the Ullapool Guitar Festival in Scotland. Wasn’t sure which woods to go for, until one year Roger made one with the spec you see above which just really connected with me. I asked if he had enough of the same wood to make one more for me - and luckily, he did!
I have bought an beautiful Fylde Ariel and am experimenting with setup - It would be really helpful to know how high your Elixir HD Lights 80/20 (13-53) are at the 12th fret - I've taken a bit too much off my saddle unfortunately - a bit of a buzz and lost tone and so starting over again....Thanks and love your music and playing.
Hey Nick - congratulations on the Ariel! Just had a quick check, looks to be 2.4mm for the 6th string at 12th. You might want to reach out to Rog to check what he’d suggest as “standard” for his Ariels. Hope that helps, and thanks for the kind words!
