    Poseidon's comment isn't him wanting Polyphemus dead, it's about the fact Odysseus revealed his name which let Polyphemus pray to Poseidon, leading to this attack here as retribution. If Odysseus didn't reveal his name, like Athena said, he wouldn't be in this mess.

    • @akaittou
      @akaittou 3 місяці тому +37

      The messed up thing about that (in epic the musical specifically) is that if Athena hadn't insisted on Odysseus going back to kill Polyphemus after they'd managed to escape the cave, Odysseus would have left without those final words. It's a good way to show how any kind of association with the gods, be it positive or negative, is ultimately detrimental for the mortals involved. Common knowledge in ancient Greece, but a modern day rendition/reimagining needs those extra things conveying it.

      @@akaittouthat's an interesting take. I always thought that Odysseus made his final statement to Polyphemus was an uncharacteristic, but reasonable loss of self-control due to his first loss of his men (especially Polities).

      If Athena hadn't showed up to demand Odysseus go back and finish off Polyphemus somehow instead of just getting everyone back to the ships and leaving, he wouldn't have had a catalyst to push him to the point of doing something as irrational as revealing his name despite having deliberately hidden it earlier. Athena's inability to understand how mortals think and especially how they feel is one of the main driving forces of the musical's interpretation of Odyssey, and this is where it initially comes to a head.

    Just something to make note of. "Don't anger Poseidon" was made because he was the pettiest of the Greek gods. He'd cause problems for people on the water because of an inconvenience or if he was bored or even if someone didn't pray to him that day. So you say "Don't anger Poseidon" because most times he made rough seas being petty. So if you actually pissed him off...well, you saw what he does when he's actually been set off.

    Small fact: dying by drowning was especially terrifying to the Greeks because the remains of the deceased were often lost at sea.
    They couldn't be given a proper burial and thus had no coin for the ferry to journey them over to the afterlife. So any sneak murder and hidden body meant that a soil was lost in the afterlife.

  • @LittleTehri
    @LittleTehri 3 місяці тому +130

    The fact that Poseidon just about tells Odysseus that if he'd just done as Athena adviced and killed Polyphemus, then none of this would've happened, it really hits hard. It becomes such a good parallell to "The Horse and the Infant" where Odysseus ultimately did as Zeus urged in order to avoid future problems. But that lesson apparently didn't stick, and Poseidon is actively showing him the consequences of that. "Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves" - if Odysseus had just killed Polyphemus just like he killed the infant, he would've avoided a lot of pain for both himself and his crew.
    Poseidon did not want Polyphemus to die - but he is saying that he would rather that Odysseus had just killed him instead of crippling him, instead of inflicting such pain and then just leaving him to suffer. And if he had just done that, if Polyphemus had died then and there, or even if Odysseus had never told the cyclops his name, then Poseidon would never have known who to punish for injuring his son.
    Thank you for a fantastic video! This really is my favourite so far in the entire series, and I was so happy to see you react to it!

      Trying to kill polyphemus is too risky knowing that other cyclops will probably join the fight, fleeting would be the best option, but ody was getting too cocky and gave polyphemus his full name. Polyphemus probably snitched and said ody's full name. For a powerful God, a name would be enough.

    What sets this animation apart from others is how Poseidon isn't filled with righteous anger as we'd expect him to be. He seems like he could care less about his son's well-being and takes genuine pleasure in making Odysseus suffer for his naivity. A true villain with solid motives.

    • @anniefemmas5097
      @anniefemmas5097 Місяць тому +3

      Poseidon really cared about his children in fact. What Poseidon meant was that "You totally could have avoid al this if you only had killed my son, but nooo" It's the fact that it would have been fair to kill the cyclops, but instead, Odysseus left him blind, humiliated, telling him his name, mocking him that he was no longer a threat, leaving him To die a horrible death alone and starving (in Greece it was worse to be disabled than to die) Killing him would have been mercy (As Poseidon makes us understand)
      And by Greek rules, if you hurt a family member in such a way, the other family member has the right to exact revenge on you. (The reason why Odysseus had to kill the infant, but he thought he was better than the gods on this occasion)
      Poseidon wouldn't have chased him if Odysseus hadn't been so arrogant.

  • @YuubiTimberwolf
    @YuubiTimberwolf 2 місяці тому +12

    There are two things to note about "you could've avoided this if you just killed my son"
    - Odysseus mocked his son by giving his name and leaving
    - Killing his son would spared Poseidon's son much trouble as he is now blind and needs to be taken care for
    Athena warned Odysseus but her tone made it sound to him like mockery, he thought he is better than her by giving the cyclops mercy but in this world mercy has a steep price.

    Poseidon is actually angry that he has to kill Odysseus to save his own reputation, since he can’t let the man who hurt his son get away with the insult. But he’s more angry at Odysseus’ hypocrisy and false righteousness.

    2:39 it's not about him wanting him to kill his son but that Odysseus "mercy" wasn't as "merciful" as he tries to make it seem, Polyphemus asked Poseidon to curse Odysseus. What Odysseus saw as mercy was far from it when you think about how the situation was handled... Poly is a giant, ugly beast who eats men and herds sheep, then a group of men invade his home and kill his FAVORITE sheep without regard to who was living here. In a fit of rage he decides to kill them but is drugged and falls unconscious, only to wake up to his now spear shaped club being dragged into his eye making him blind. He cries and whales opening his cave to run outside and the men had the chance to escape but the leader decides that blinding him wasn't enough. "Hey you, cyclops! Remember my friends who have fallen, for I am your *DARKEST MOMMENT* (the cyclops is blind and will only see darkness, which Poseidon also repeats to Ody), I am Odysseus!!"

  • @ShyyGaladriel

    Odysseus's greatest flaw is his hubris. Had he killed the Polyphemus as he was instructed to instead of maim him Poseidon wouldn't have known who killed his son. Had he not told Polyphemus his name then the Cyclops wouldn't have been able to pray to his father for revenge. Poseidon's hand was forced, he had to take revenge, but even then he gave Odysseus the chance to apologize. And instead of doing that all Odysseus did was justify his actions to the father of the man he maimed. Thus now Poseidon not only has to take revenge for his son, but now for himself as well for being disrespected by Odysseus.

    Think about it, Poseidon is probably the pettiest god in existence. He'd shipwreck some random guy just because of a bad day. So what do you think will happen when he finds out his son was blinded? I don't think the whole "Nobody has hurt me" schtick is gonna work on someone like Poseidon, so he will realize someone hurt his son. And if minding your own business can get you killed, what would happen when you hurt his child?
