    When I saw the Panther and Jagdpanther right next to each other at the US Army Ordinance Museum, Aberdeen, Maryland, you could see that the slope of whole side armor (right above the tracks) of the hull superstructure on the Jagdpanther represents the same angle of the side hull armor of the Panther. Beautiful design relation.
    I ran my bare hand on this chunky hard cold steel side armor ....
    Perfect combination of speed, mobility, firepower, and protection .... ❤️

I love Sherman tank in all of it's variants. It's one of my all time favorite tank series.
    However, you have to admit that even the M4A3(76)W HVSS was near-hopelessly outmatched by PzVs and VIs. Only the Firefly had a realistically fair shot of defeating them.
    At least the M4s was a good match against the PzIIIs and IVs (tanks that the M4 was anticipated to encounter) but the experience of the Geman crews, as well as their far superior optics, guns, and projectiles still gave them the edge.

    Gosh I envy that driver having great fun driving that beast around as if it was a toy! Besides being impressed with his driving skills I was impressed with the very good genetal restoration and in particular with the notoriously difficult engine! Not once it was spluttering or smoking despite being pushed quite hard and the sound was marvelous! If you compare with the Tiger of bovington museum you can hear the difference! The Tiger engine is less harmonious, more ragged and smokey! Did the Germans employed a veteran to do such a marvelous restoration on that engine? The only flaw on that Jagpanther is the left exhaust pipe as it was only installed on the Panther A! A curious mistake! Anyway I would love to drive around that beast! God job!

      Paolo Viti The two ladies from Koblenz (Ute/Jagdpanther 234 and Ulrike/Panther 801) have very late model Maybach HL230 not the HL210 of the very early model Bovington Tiger. They have been in "active duty" during the development of the Leopard 1 and the "KaJaPa" so they got some more maintenance and the "best available" spares. They also had the benefit of being always "active" or "stored in reserve" and so their general state was always very good, basically they are not restaurations but well maintained oldtimersIn the case of 801 she is a "Ausf. G Too late" (build from existing parts for the british army post Mai 1945) so she is likely the best preserved Panther anyway

      Michael Brinkhues thanks for the info! It makes sense! Yes I know very well that two "ladies" has the later Maybach HL230 whilst the Bovington Tiger has the first series HL210 and that the 810 was built from existing parts together with, if I'm not wrong, other 4 Panthers! Nevertheless I think that they did a hell of a good job!

      @mrsparkle001 9 років тому +3

      Well it's lighter than it would have been 70 years ago and depending on the terrain it might get bogged down by mud or soft ground.
      The sherman's advantage was ease of manufacture and repair. German high command insisted on developing increasingly bigger and more complex tanks that couldn't easily be repaired due to lack of interchangeable parts.

    • @doktorbimmer
      @doktorbimmer 9 років тому +21

      mrsparkle001 The Panther and Jagdpanther were faster than the Sherman both on-road and off-road... the Sherman also didn't have what would be considered a very good ground pressure, what is called track floatation or "track lift"... due to its narrow tracks and less sophisticated suspensions system ( some modern tractors have better suspension) a Panther or Tiger could cross soft or boggy ground completely impassable by the Sherman... German tanks could also climb grades and over obstacles faster too.
      The Panther and the Tiger were designed and built on an entirely new concept never conceived by the Allied planning depts....
      a revolutionary concept now widely adopted around the world known as "Force Multiplication"
      cheers!

      doktorbimmer-UR
      That's not all true. There were bridges and other areas shermans could cross that tigers could not.
      But the biggest problem for the tigers and panthers was their complicated construction and fuel cost. It was a bigger problem with the even lager king tigers and elephants. Some would break down after just a hundred yards and had to be abandoned. They could have built many, many more panzers and had the capability to repair them all had they had some sense. It's exactly what the US did.

      Sadly porsche's tank would sound very wierd since its engine was always at the highest rpm to power the electric engines.

    -SMGJohn- ... its WAS probably the best tank of the war.
    650HP -700HP Diesel??? in case you weren't up to speed on Diesel engine developement of the era... such an engine did not exist in 1942.
    In fact, the Maybach V-12 with its very compact size, low weight and high HP output is considered by many experts the best tank engine of WW2.

      The KV-1 (1939) used an 600HP Diesel Engine, the V-2k.

    • @doktorbimmer
      @doktorbimmer 10 років тому +4

      Emil Antonowsky Yes, basically the V-2 with higher injection pressure and a higher rpm limit. Increased vibration and wear only shortened the service life even further... the KV-1 was under powered and no larger engine was available. from then on all V-2 variants were limited to 500hp until the super/turbocharged versions after the war.
      The V-2 was too large already, nearly twice the size of any other tank engine, it took up nearly two thirds of the available hull space and caused some serious design problems, like turret placement.
      Cheers!

      Junkers built 880hp diesel engines before WW2 and those were used in airplanes. Smaller versions of the Junkers diesel engines were used in trucks and tractors. It would have been quite easy to fit one into a tank. The technology to build a powerful, turbocharged diesel engine certainly existed in the early to mid 1940'ies.

      @doktorbimmer 10 років тому +1

      MrAstrojensen Ah Yes! the Jumo 205! Truly an amazing piece of engineering.. yes its true it did exist.. and did produce the prescribed power output... it was also small, relatively compact and lighter than a Maybach Hl-230.. but about twice the length
      Unfortunately these engines cost something like 10 times the price of the Maybach... which was not cheap to produce either..
      It would not be until the late 1950s to 1960s that mass produced supercharged/turbocharged Diesels were economical enough for general use and for AFVs
      Cheers!

      The real doktorbimmer Actually Dr. Maybach was working on a 10 cylinder 830HP diesel that would be a "drop in" replacement for the HL230 series. His work was delayed because a certain guy thankfully considered the diesel for the "Maus" more important. The same guy also decided not to give the Panzer V the stronger final drives of the Mobile Bunker VI and not to wait for the second gen turret.Thankfully because in the 1950s/60s the germans basically build such a beast - the Leopard 1

    But why did they choose 234, and then put zimmerit on it.
    Photos shown 234 clearly without zimmerit, and rightfully so since it's a late G1.
    was this chassis actually one of the 654 G1 late?

    badass looking and highly successful war machine; it's only downside was the lack of numbers.
    Germans didnt knew they had a gem in their hands with the panther series.
    They should of discontinued the more expensive heavy tank Tiger I and II production, and concentrate on the panther as main battle tank and jagdpanther for extra fire power when needed.
    Tiger I cost of production cca. 30% more then a panther and less effective
