I would recommend someone avoid a mathematics major if they have a severe problem/fear with being wrong. One of the best ways to learn math is too try different approaches to solving a problem you've never seen before, and (depending on how foreign that problem is) more often than not, your first (many) approaches will be wrong. If you want to first think about a problem so you always approach it with a (not the) correct solution, then you'll most likely come across (too) many problems that you won't solve.
At my university, the professor who was "correct the most" was also "wrong the most." And this is because he had so little fear about being wrong.

Is this more applicable for higher level math? I'm going through the calculus sequence right now and getting problems right on the first try close to 100% of the time. How does this apply to someone who can't seem to ever be wrong? I guess I'll find out eventually.

When I was a math major in college people in non-stem degrees would often get a little intimidated when to talking about "intellectual" topics around me (not that I was happy with that, it just happened). I'd also get the 'nerd' perception quite often, but only after I told someone my major. I disagree a little bit with the liking calculus statement because often that's really all you have to go by for determining whether or not you like math. Most people in calculus courses won't be able to open a book on real analysis or topology and make an informed decision on whether or not they like it without trying one of the courses first. You should very much want to learn math and enjoy mathematical reasoning if you want to major in it though.

Math people aren't necessarily the smartest. Math, CS, and Physics majors today are so focused on their stem subjects that they don't know Grant Wood painted American Gothic or Eva Peron wrote letters to Charles De Gaulle. Having history and arts knowledge is very important. There use to be well rounded stem majors but not as much.

@@W81Researcher Knowing random-ass facts (especially about who did what thing) is so far away from the true meaning of intelligence that I feel annoyed that it even has to be said. In fact, I find that truly intelligent people tend to discard stuff like this because their brains are optimized to retain information that is actually important. Okay, you know who painted a thing and who wrote letters to some dude. What problems can you solve with that? What value can you provide to the world now that you are armed with that knowledge other than passing on these random Jeopardy-like trivia nuggets to some other person to make them feel like a pseudointellectual? Congratulations! Actually, you know what? The reason those STEM majors don't know this stuff is because they are actually doing something that is so challenging that they have to sacrifice so much to get good and master it that they don't have time to be frolicking around in art history. The concept of a library was invented so we wouldn't have to remember this stuff. When you read that fact, you know it. What it means is self-evident. When you try to read a passage in a calculus book, you may actually have to flex that thing you call your brain to even begin to understand what is going on.

I really wish this video was out my freshman year of college. I am a junior right now and I pursued mathematics. I can tell you all of these reasons resonated with me. I loved calculating, I thought it looked cool and did not exactly what I wanted to do. It's not too late for me but definitely would have wished someone told me to stop, but it's not too late for any of you out there deciding to stick with mathematics. @@EJ-sp7ru Wow time does fly (three years ago!). First off, I think it’s perfectly fine to have an interest in abstract mathematics but continue to pursue applied mathematics. For my school specifically, there was a lot of overlap with the two math majors. So, it didn’t matter really which one to pick. There was still going to be a certain number of proof and theory classes. However, if the differences in your class requirements are less of theory and proofs, absolutely go for it!
I think employers love seeing the ability to think abstractly and logically in one’s resume. However, I think experience and passion are way better (I don’t mean passion in the surface-level sense of a love for something. Rather, a list of achievements, clubs etc. that revolve around a common subject/interest). I learned this after I graduated college (time flys 😅).
New bottom line: Have an end goal in mind. Know what you want to be by the end of your studies. If you don’t know, pursue what you like and it will natural fall into place.
      Good luck!

I literally did Math (I'm in my third year) because:
    1) It's the most difficult major a human can do (therefore doing the hardest makes me able to do anything)
    2) It's the least major that needs memory
    3) I'm simply in love with Math🤷🏻‍♂️
    EDIT:
Hello guys! It's so interesting to see the comment after 1 year! I got a scholarship from a French university so now I'm continuing my masters in Pure Mathematics. I updated my opinion a little bit:
    1) It's "by far" the most difficult major. I've seen some of what other difficult majors learn and it's nothing compared to Mathematics. What's difficult in Physics for example is the Mathematics which is considered easy in a Math major. Plus, nothing ever get close to Mathematics with proof.
    2) It's the least major that needs memory BUT It really needs more memory than what I thought.
    3) I still love it but I'm starting a little bit to regret doing Pure Mathematics ; I'm very good at programming, plus, an applied Math degree is easier to do, by far better to help you find a job, and the jobs you find are more payed.

It doesn't really matter. What matters is skills, connections and the relevant experience. No serious company in the world hires any college graduate only based on the degree they got and if a company is doing that, better not to work for it. As long as you're highly skilled and those skills can help make the company profit, no one in the world cares what your degree is. Some companies do specifically state they want stem graduates but that's only because it's mostly stem graduates who have the skills and they don't want to read too many applications. It's the most negotiable requirement and it shouldn't actually matter. That's essentially how capitalism regulates and stabilises itself. If you can make a company more profitable, you'll be employed. That's about it.

@@achyuththouta6957 Yes but its easier to get a computer science job without a degree than Civil Engineering, and also in my state you have to have a degree to be eligible to get an engineering license and lead projects. Not sure if thats true in every state though. Probably most of them anyway. Any good engineering program will have hands in projects to build practical skills and or co-ops through industry partnerships so I really don't understand why people think college is all about sitting in a Classroom when it never was. And lots of schools have job fairs so I think some college students miss tons of opportunities to build connections. If your school is only sitting in a classroom it is a bad school just as much as though companies that hire only on degrees may be bad companies because good schools have co ops. Some even require co ops or projects. In the end, you have evidence of skills beyond a piece of paper. My dad got an engineering job straight out of college. Lucky for him he went to a college that had hands on projects. Imagine that.

I went to Chico and I didn’t really like the school because I fail to see what kind of school it was. So, I suggest you check out each school your interested in attending and stay there for like a day or two to get a feel for it. Know which school is best for your degree. Also, I’ll have you consider going to the Air Force to find a job that could relate to your major if you want. That way you can get experience and you’ll get your college payed for by the GI bill. One more thing, try not to get in debt. If your going to school, you make sure that you really want this degree. It bad enough to see so many people dropout because of there indecisiveness. Good luck.

Also, I definitely struggled with proofs when I was starting out, but as I kept taking more proof classes, the more I started to understand how to do them. My best piece of advice for you with proofs is to make sure u understand your theorems in order to apply it to proofs. It’s definitely difficult, but we learn to conquer our mistakes. Proofs are like puzzles where theorems are the puzzle pieces. Gotta push through and know your goal. Wish you the best! God bless

It's not like math is a bad major for money. I'm actually a statistics major so it's a bit different but last I checked the average starting salary was close to 60,000 a year which is really really good money compared to a lot of majors. It's generally true though that if you wanna be rolling it in with a six figure salary 3 months out of college, there are really only a few majors that could do that and math/stats isn't one of them. Honestly, most CS degrees can't do that at least not without a few years of experience at the right company under your belt. 60 grand a year sounds alright to me. And I know that if I want to be a legitimate hardcore statistician and break that 6-figure ceiling then I'll need a graduate degree, at least a master's. But that's alright with me. I'd probably enjoy going back to grad school in a few years anyway. That's how much I like the challenge and the field.

I went for the Masters in Math 1991 and the PhD in Math in 2000, after having worked two years as a chemical engineer in the late 1980s, and after I earned my BChE in chemical engineering in 1986 with a Minor in Russian, because, simply, the math needed to be done: the mathematics to solve problems in bionanotechnology and every other STEM problem or even political, legal, ethical problems. In spite of what an amazing priceless education I received at U of Delaware for my BChE, in spite of my three semesters of Honors Math, and in spite of taking Infinite Series and Advanced Calculus and a year of Abstract Algebra in fun night courses while I worked as a chemE, I was very poorly prepared mathematically in graduate school. It was a devastating shock out unprepared I was, at the high level of abstraction that mystified me, and, frankly, a lot of it still does.
Sure, I LOVE doing math. But that is not why I went into it. I did it because it had to be done. These problems must be solved.
I gave ZERO consideration to "getting a career in math". Although I did teach as a fulltime professor for one year after PhD, and while it was an easy job, I never had any intention to make teaching my career. I intended to return to engineering, armed with my PhD and all these new math ideas (I published six math papers across three different peer reviewed math journals and have given talks on my work, most recently 2023 April 21, my first ever lecture done over Zoom, at the Kolchin Seminar in Differential Algebra). I still do.

But if making money is the end goal, learn programming and the mathematical training should be useful. If you want to make a lot of money and want to use a lot of your math education, that's actually quite difficult. There might be companies that require knowledge in math or work in some niche areas which have got to do with math and if you're competent and lucky, you might get a job in such companies but those are quite rare and I've only seen like a couple of them.

On your second point, if someone told me they were a maths major, I'd definitely care. I'd realise that I am dealing with an intelligent individual. Having said that, I'm not an employer, so my opinion is utterly worthless. Me being impressed is like a dog wagging its tail at the sound of Bach's music. Bach wouldn't feel validated by the dog. But I think any decent employer *should* care. I agree though, impressing people isn't a good reason to do a major.

    • @achyuththouta6957
      @achyuththouta6957 2 роки тому

The problem is that being simply being an intelligent individual will not get you a job in this day and age. Not by any means. The companies only care about skills and to what extent you can help the company become more profitable. Nothing else matters. That's how capitalism regulates and stabilises itself. Right now, the skill which is in high demand is programming and anyone who can program well can get a great job. Good thing is, you don't need a formal education with a particular focus on programming to develop that skill. It's something anyone can do on their own. A math major can learn programming. The education in math would likely help them develop logical thinking which is useful for programming. So most math majors shouldn't be unemployed. If a math major doesn't get employed or gets a job that doesn't pay well, it's entirely their fault. The world is becoming more competitive but it's also becoming easier to compete because there are less restrictions today than there were before.
