    I’m a math major (4 year bachelors in maths, 2 years masters in comp science). I did maths because I liked it. But I think it’s quite difficult to get work in a math related field. I became an IT project manager and have done quite well. I’m about to retire. Recently I’ve started studying maths again (set theory and logic to start) and thoroughly enjoying it.

    • @martinracek8593

      Why did you find it difficult to get work in a math related field ? I am a highschool student wondering wether I should get a bachelors in math or in physics.

      How did the math/computer science combo treat you? Right now I'm a 2nd year math major and I'm going to he adding CS to that next year (making me both math and CS major in 4 years) and I'm wondering wether or not to do the CS master or maybe choose something else again (finance maybe).

    • @Simon-lb2iu
      @Simon-lb2iu Рік тому +2

      @@alex_bor Maths and Comp Science is a great combo, but I reckon maths and finance would be good as well, especially if you are trying to keep away from excessively backroom roles. In truth, however, once your in a field for a few years, your degree becomes less and less relevant. Maths is a bit different than other subjects because, for me at least, it’s fun and meaningful.

    • @Simon-lb2iu
      @Simon-lb2iu Рік тому +1

      @@martinracek8593 Maths is not really a vocational subject. It’s not like medicine or law where you train for a specific profession (although there are some maths-related subjects that you can train in which are vocational - think actuary or statistician). Many maths majors go into the computer industry because maths skills are useful there, although you may end up doing a lot of coding or configuration.

    Hey man, brazilian pure math major here. I've watched your intro to topology video a while ago... Subscribed because you seem like a nice guy with love for math. I'm glad you are uploading more here. For me, the main reason for a math major is the power that you get... Everything uses math in a certain level. I am pretty much good at everything but I am passionate about nothing. Not my dancing, my piano playing or French even though I love the language. The only thing I am interested in even a bit is maths. I like how logical everything is and how math can blow your mind time and time again. Honestly I don’t know what to do in the future since I am only in 10th grade. I can’t see myself doing the same thing for the rest of my life and my parents say math will allow me to go in many different directions. I hope I can decide soon on what to do in my life. For me solving computer science problems was a motivation, all tech base models are based on high level of analytic or other field of math. for me designing better and more accurate algorithms was the first reason to start a master in pure math which you mentioned in your third reasons to have a bachelor degree before and have a good base of math for chemistry or physics or ...
    And specially I like to solve conjectures in the future!
    I don't know if I could be a good teacher or professor but I definitely know I should train people to do some thing with what I train them and I better be expert in that.
    I mean I had not figured out how are homotopy functions are guessable in hard unpredictable situations, but if I teach algebraic topology I better find plenty of those topics useful for at least making the base of a new tech or understanding the mechanism of a model better or help me solve some sort of math proofs!

    I don't necessarily like abstract concepts, but if handled well, I find them enjoyable enough. Math is an art form, just like blowing stuff up is in chemistry(though that is sometimes more illegal).

    I’ve been thinking of getting a math degree for the following reasons: I was a double major in criminal justice and philosophy (attempting to become a lawyer), but only got the crj major, and left school to become a law enforcement officer. I have since left that profession and joined the military. I have a great tuition assistance program and GI bill to pay for one bachelors and one graduate degree. I like the idea of a math degree because I have become very interested in math philosophically, and really appreciate the analytical characteristics of the profession. I also love logic, my favorite part of philosophy. I might use the math major to finally get my law degree (math majors score really high on the lsat), or pursue a career in math or stem field. I’ve been out of school for four years, and might be having a pipe dream, but yeah- any advice? I saw your 4 reasons not to get a math degree, and I am still wanting to get one.

    High school: I was 4th in class out of some 302 students.
    College (chemical engineering + Russian): 3.54 out of 4.00 GPA. Cum Loude
    Graduate school ("pure" mathematics): 3.00 out of 4.0 GPA (actually it might even be lower - I long forgot)
    Yes, I worked my ass off since nursery school, through our excellent New Jersey public schools through grade school, high school, on many subjects, played violin + viola, weightlifted, played PAL soccer for 2 years when I was 10 or 11. Worked my ass off minoring in Russian and majoring in chem eng at U Del.
    Sure - all that stuff was hard. Moreover, I earned easy As in various night courses in Advanced Calculus, Infinite Series, Electrical Circuit Theory at Drexel University, and two semesters of Abstract Algebra at Villanova,
    as a non-matriculated student.
    NONE OF THIS PREPARED ME FOR THE SHEER PSYCHOLOGICAL TERROR & SUFFERING & DIFFICULTY IN ABSTRACTION IN GRADUATE SCHOOL OF PhD-LEVEL PROFESSIONAL MATHEMATICS! TO THIS DAY, I STILL DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE REASONS FOR COHOMOLOGY, DIAGRAM CHASING,
    I even returned to community college in 2005 to take two C++ courses, four semesters of French (the only four the school offered), and completed a Biotechnology A.S. in 2009.
    As you can see by my grades, my grades reflected my much poorer performance in pure abstract math compared to anything else I had ever done in my life before or since.
    The problem was that I was NOT an UNDERGRADUATE MATH major. If I had been, I would have taken a year of REAL ANALYSIS and a year of TOPOLOGY at the undergrad level FIRST, PREPARING me for graduate level classes.
    In fact, at Rutgers, by my 2nd semester, I had to fall back and take undergraduate level math classes,
    which upset the state scholarship I was getting.

    Hi, my name is Mason Wang and I love mathematics / math and also this video you made on math major. I agree with you about “ 4 Reasons to be a Math Major (Mathematics Major)” and very well said. Thanks for sharing!
    I love mathematics because I love solving different equations, graphing linear equations, counting different money from all over the world and doing word problems too. I think mathematics is very important to the world and numbers too because we need it to calculate different math problems like buying food with money and solving it, so we know how much it cost / the total cost.
    Question, if I love mathematics / math then does that count on becoming a math major person or not quite really? I think it is depending on if you do well in college / if you are going to college then you could try different classes out and see which major fits you the best?

      Math majors typically do formal proofs, which involves using definitions to create theorems, rather than memorize them. It’s more than just understanding the material, it’s being able to come up with stuff on your own. Look up some higher level math courses beyond calculus to see what they’re about.

      If you're starting out at a community college, they probably have remedial classes, and my CC offered Math classes online until Calculus. So, you can still do them while working, though it'd be some work. I never attended high school, so I had to start off with Algebra. I started college at 34 and have taken a Math course each semester. Started with an algebra/remedial algebra hybrid class and now I'm taking Calc 3. It's been a lot of work, but I'll have most of my Math out of the way before I transfer to the local University. Of course, I'm a CS major, not Math.....but there is a good bit of Math in a Computer Science program.

    One might want to look over "Principles of Mathematical Analysis" by Walter Rudin to see what mathematics at a higher level looks like. By the way, Rudin's wife, Mary Ellen, got into mathematics because when she went to register as a freshman at the University of Texas there were long lines except at the table to register for mathematics majors. She went to that table and R. L. Moore talked her into becoming a mathematics major. She got her BA and PhD there under Moore. Moore had a very independent way of teaching PhD students and later in life she felt she hadn't learned as much mathematics as she might have under a professor using more conventional methods. I think she was wrong. I don't think she realized how much his method taught her how to think, even if she was short-changed on what to think.

    Thanks for your great contents. It's very informative.
    One of my concerns is if mathematicians will be replaced by AI and ML, and whether their job will be automated in oncoming decades. I guess the chance of mathematicians' jobs getting automated in some careers is fairly low, like financial analysts, or mathematicians and statisticians. But what about the pure mathematics fields?
    I've heard that right now in proofs and theorems, mathematicians are helped by AI. If it's gonna be automated in coming decades, then what do we focus so much on the theorems for?
    Personally, I like theorems and solving complex problems, but since the technology and AI grow fast, I'm not sure if what we have focused on in the past hundred years is going to be what we should focus on in the future.
    Honestly it saddens me when I think that mathematicians' job is replaceable by technology, since pure mathematics is one of the hardest fields and degrees. I don't know if it's true or not. I don't have any solid information about it, and I've heard contradictory thing on this subject.
    I wonder if you could give us your view about it.

      @binampoudyal3198 2 роки тому

      Speaking as a Math and Philosophy major who dabbles in proofs a lot, and as someone who has a lot taken quite a few courses in comp sci and computational math, I highly doubt that AI will replace mathematicians anytime soon. I have no doubt that they will help a lot. Research on algorithms and logic (itself a branch of pure mathematics and logic) is itself often times the foundations on which these AI are build in the first place, and as such there is always a need for them to be improved upon. Besides AIs won't decide for themselves anytime soon, what theorems need to be proved -- they will for the most part be guided by human mathematicians who will better understand the context of the problem, and the results. And then what about the theorems in statistics? There is always the need for new methodologies and techniques, and the need to contextualize and clarify them, and they are often guided by research in pure mathematics (heck a lot of research in probability would count as pure maths research).
