thanks to the Georgia Photographer I now know how to adjust my adapter. It all makes sense I noticed the screws with the Allen wrench but never messed with it. Thanks man I'm a new Yashica collector and user. Great info you got here.
Thank you!!! That lens is pretty cool, I still need to make the video of dismantling it and cleaning the internal parts to see how it looks. But for now it does work and I like it. 👍📸
Great video, I finally found out what the little Allen screws on the adaptor are meant to do. I got the Yashinon 50mm f1.7 which was recommended by the Monochrome Memoirs, and from the few photos I have taken with it, I love the lens and the way it isolates the subject it has a very unique way of rendering photos. Thanks for the video.
I had that lens back when I was shooting with a Yashica camera. It was actually a nice machine. It worked really well for me for over a decade and was a pawn shop find to boot. I hate that I got rid of it now...
@@cubanrum Yes, I did notice they are quite economical for some reason. The Yashica brand has never been a high value brand even though the gear works really well.
Thanks for this. I am sitting at my desk with the same two lenses. I was about to sell the Yashica, but then you pointed out the Manual/Auto switch that I hadn't noticed. I am out to shoot some more, and will decide after that. The Pentax SMC f/1.4 50mm is brilliant. My favourite, along with the M42 50mm f/4.0 macro. you are right about the Yashica being heavy, but I find that actually helps with steadiness in some cases. Mine is mint. No fungus or haze. A nice-looking, impressive piece of glass and metal.
I have a Yashica fxd quartz with a 50mm f2 lens. Awesome quality. Yashica made the Contax cameras and lenses. I am collecting Yashica cameras and lenses now. I have a 1957 Yashica Mat with a 75mm 3.5 Lumaxar lens.
Great video! Thanks for posting! I own two very similar lenses but unfortunately not in that good shape. I am pretty sure the previous owner misplaced inner elements when cleaning or lubricating in a way the lens doesnt focus properly. Would you happen to know where to find a manual or scheme that shows how the interior of this item is assembled?
Yes sir, seems that it is luck of the draw if one can get a lens apart, get it clean... and the back together again. I am not always successful myself...😬👍📸
Love these old lenses. What Mount is on your Leica? An M39? I’ve got the 50mm f1.7 yashinon and a 35mm SMC Takumar M42. The 50 focuses fine with an adapter on my 750 but the 35 won’t focus to infinity, even with the Adapter with the little lens in it. Seems to work fine on the Z6 mirrorless with a z adapter without that little lens. I’m half tempted to look for an old Pentax M42 Mount film camera just to mess around with them officially. But there we go with the GAS again... 🙄. And I meant to add... saw a review of Leica film cameras the other day and the reviewer claims PART of the Leica-Look is due to the rangefinder format which reduces the distance from the lens to the film/sensor plane (in contrast with the mirror box on an SLR) which helps with fine focusing and increased sharpness can contrast corner to corner.
The CL has a L mount on it. Which is a bayonet style mount. Being mirrorless, all of the other mounts can be adapted to it. So it works out really well for that. You need that Pentax camera 😜🤷🏻♂️ You know it deep down. Lol.
Hey David thanks again man and this is another great coverage of a beloved subject for many of us, "The Vintage Lenses". Like how you presented this pretty babe here. I guess all the low contrast is due to the internal flare and glare as this is one of the earlier Yashica lenses that didn't have adequate lens coating, as was not known to manufacturers by then. Of course not among the very early Yashica lenses. A little piece of interesting information that I found and like to share with your and your viewers: The Yashikor (Older) is a 3 element / 3 group triplet lens. The Yashinon (This one) is a 4 element / 3 group Tessar clone. The Carl Zeiss mastery in optical engineering made this lens, if not The Most, at least one of the more often copies lens configuration of the 20th Century! So no wonder to see a lot more lenses including some Russians that have the same engine under the hood! It was copied because it was and still is a great lens or a great way to arrange 4 elements. Please note that "Tessar " is the Greek word for four / 4. Note the odd configuration of elements 3 and 4 (the two rear elements of the lens) that are concave/convex (Thus fitting tight into each other) and actually glued together. Over time and their tiny separation is the cause for some flaws you may report in final IQ. Anyhow, this is one great addition to anyone's collection yet another well functionable portraiture and general walk around photography lens, at affordable price, as long as you know how to focus manually! Thanks for your great uploads and content that are simple yet right to the point. Way to go & GBY.
Neither, if those are the factors that need controlling. Both of those lenses have issues with everything you mentioned. 😂 The f1.4 is better if stopped down to f2 though. So I could say that one is better.
@@bradl2636 yeah. It is really funny how they made so many variations of the same focal length. Doesn’t make sense except that it is probably due to using subcontractors and their existing designs that were simply rebadged for Yashica. That is the only logical solution I could come up with.
It does produce a unique look. I am going to do a teardown on it and make a video about it. I think it has mold in it and that is why I am getting that weird effect.
@@davidsaylors that's what it looks like to me but im by far from a lens expert, you can almost make the mold out on the example shots you showed...That will be a cool video to see, im one of those that has to know how things work...lol...I look forward to the video!
It will take a while to get that one right. I will have to figure out how to get the camera in on the bench. 🤷🏻♂️ Not impossible but it will be tight. I should have done it with the last one too...

Yashica is a really slept on brand, I've got two of their lenses and they also have a very old school look to them.

The Konica 50mm f1.7 has an amazing blue flare
