👴 Old Composer Reactions 🤘
This album makes me feel old cause I still think of it as "Deftones' new stuff". It was released in 2010.
I feel u bro.
Same
right? xd you’re not wrong in the grand scheme of deftones to be fair.. but goodness, 13 years ago. ugh. i was 21 when this was released. holy sh*t.
As someone who bought white pony from an FYE -I feel u
Same...I remember when this came out. It was the last deftones cd I ever purchased. Seems like yesterday.
This album is absolutely amazing and super underrated, probably my personal favorite from their entire discography.
Love this album as I do all their albums. I'd say with honesty I don't go back to Saturday Night Wrist often or their debut. I love individual tracks but the album lacks flow and cohesion to me. I think Diamond Eyes along with White Pony and ATF are the most praised. I've never thought it was thought of as underrated. I love this album but for me Koi No Yokan is even better as it has that intensity, flow/transitions, melody, it for me is arguably their most progressive album. I think Sergio Vegas bass is so much more prevalent in the mix too which is great to hear. Abe's drumming is awesome as usual. Steph's guttural, chuggy riffs are blistering at times, Chino has his banshee vocal and his melodic, textural wail like singing on show. His shoegazy guitar playing is also there. Frank's soundscaping and layering is epic. I love Diamond Eyes but I prefer the more subtle, spacey, psychedelic proggy and less bombastic Koi No Yokan. I think their most underrated album is actually Gore as that just is too ethereal and left of centre for some Deftones fans. The mix I think is a bit weak in places I think on Gore. I honestly think that's a brilliant album and a grower like their self titled is. There are some absolute tunes on Diamond Eyes though, it's such a propulsive album. Is Diamond Eyes your personal favourite?
I wouldn’t say it’s underrated. Regarded as their best album by many fans (me included).
Totally agree. Koi no yokan is pretty amazing tho
Overall this is my favorite album!
Diamond Eyes, and Koi No Yokan. Masterpieces.
Love this album. Heavy, progressive and always deftones
The switch to 8 string guitars for this album was a wonderful touch.
Ohms kicks ass too 🤟
@@bayoustate9481 I was happily surprised by that one, too. A bit better than Gore to me; which, save for a few tracks, was pretty forgettable.
Agreed, tbh the more I listen I feel like Diamond Eyes is their most polished album
I love this album, they pull no punches. The deftones blend aggression and beauty completely uniquely.
Geebz, try the following songs from them for a more unique and complex experience:
Deftones - Cherry Waves
Deftones - Beware
Deftones - Battle-Axe
Deftones - Leathers
Deftones - Entombed
Deftones - Minerva
Deftones - Be Quiet and Drive Far Away
Entombed is SO damn good! He should do that one for sure!
I would add Phantom Bride.
Entombed 💖
This album was their return to form for me. I had lost track of them after high school and didn’t think their self titled lived up to White Pony. I didn’t even realize they had released Saturday Night Wrist but Diamond Eyes brought me back to Deftones.
Same here bro..
You didn't like the self titled album? As someone who has been a fan since 1999, I loved every album up until Saturday Night Wrist and Koi No Yokan. Every other album has been fire IMO.
I got introduced to them when their S/T dropped and haven’t been disappointed since Gore was released. Still not a bad album but my least favorite of theirs so far.
I had to go back and make sure, because i'm in the same boat and consider this one to be closer to White Pony & Around the Fur, so much so that I forgot which order they were released in.
I could have sworn the self titled came right before Koi No Yokan.
it’s an unpopular opinion but this album and Koi No Yokan are my favourite deftones albums. The atmosphere has never been better 👌
Ayyy thought it was just me
Yes, Diamond Eyes is the first album that was able to keep my attention for more than 1 or 2 songs, Koi was able to keep it the entire album. I freaking love Koi
Love their whole discography but I also say those 2 are my favorite, might even say Koi No Yokan is my favorite!
Agreed, but also white pony....
Those two, Around the Fur and White Pony.....I constantly rotate among those. Sprinkling in the others once in a while.
Geebz decomposing deftones? Instant like!
Sonically, this is the best album from Deftones. The mix on this is perfection through the entire project. It's on my list of albums I could listen to with no skips, and ranked up there with one of the best mix references for rock music.
This, Koi, and White Pony form a 3 way tie of my favorite deftones album
7:10 My favorite part of this song is that when I saw it live during their tour with Gojira they played the breakdown stop and go chugging for a whole 2 minutes straight and everyone was headbanging in sync with it. Me and a couple people around me thought they were stalling to fix a technical error or if something was going wrong but we realised it was just them messing with us
man, deftones and gojira - bet that was a fantastic show
Yo, that album rules.
The have a synth player, Frank Delgado, so yes it was a synth at the beginning and throughout the song.
For Deftones' best sonic songs that you won't hear often from the mainstream fan.
Leathers
Tempest
Phantom Bride
Combat
It's a synth, not a guitar. Frank Delgado playing.
The more Deftones the better. You should do something heavier from Around the Fur like Rickets or Headup. Also, producer on this was the same as Koi No Yokan, and to me the really have a similar vibe although maybe a bit darker/heavier overall on KNY.
My first Deftones Album. Still Love it
"Getting deftoned", love the new expression \m/
You have done so much Deftones and I love it. You should decompose the song Knife Prty
I’m very surprised a lot of vocal coaches and composers haven’t reacted to it yet, absolutely the most chilling Deftones song ever
Unbelievably great song off an incredible album
Great reaction, and love to see content from the Diamon Eyes era. Thanks for sharing!
This is my favorite Deftones album. I love it so much I had the owl tattooed on my arm (and listened to the album during the process!). You've Seen the Butcher is the best track for me.
You’ve Seen the Butcher is easily top five Deftones songs for me and I have a good feeling you’d love the guitar work in it Geebz
Huge song, underrated in their discography imo. Did you happen to watch Nik Nocturnal's "Making A Deftones Song" video this week? He nailed it!
Underrated, really? I first heard Deftones on Saints Row 3 and this was one of the two songs on there by them I believe. Back when Saints Row devs had taste lool
Freaking loved Nik's song, he totally nailed it!!!
@@VLADPowder It was the only Deftones song on the game. Sure had quite some fantastic songs on the soundtrack!
@@captaincobana4144 Well Hole In The Earth was on SR2 then because I remember flying planes listening to it. Good times
@@VLADPowder Wow, it was indeed. I never knew
Yeeaaahhhhhhh deftones,.....when i read this,..im back ,.sir
One of my favorite guitar tones on record. So good.
Hell yes this was one of my OG defones requests!
This album means alot to me in many different ways. Still go back to it often! "Risk" has always stood out to me from this record.
"Risk" is an amazing track, so ethereal
Risk is so awesome, it's sounds like a triplet riff that Steph is playing. It's even more compelling the fact that it doesn't literally reference Chi Cheng and yet it still does in a quite spiritual way. My favourites off this album are Risk, You've Seen The Butcher and Beauty School.
I agree! I always think that's one of their most overlooked tracks! So good
I am really looking forward to the Loathe video reaction. Is there a particular date when you plan to release the video?
Over the weekend :)
@@KeyOfGeebz ❤️❤️❤️
This song is still on rotation for me. Never gets old!
As a musician and guitar player I’ve adored the Deftones since 2000 for their crazy time n key signatures. Seen em several times life and they’re great every time
Diamond Eyes is amazing, I recommend rocket skates it’s soooo good
Loved the reaction as always! Something else in the realm of Deftones that you should check out is Loathe. I know you've covered one or two of their tracks before but they have a ton of other killer songs that deserve your attention!
Man I love this album. Prince, and This Place is Death are stand outs for me. Love those songs.
Love Prince. The mix of melodic and heavy
First song I learned on drums fully with my guitar player. Then the whole album.
The opening sound reminds me of Cliff Burton on Bass in "Orion" on the album Master of Puppets
YAYYY I finally got my suggestion! 😍 This whole album is pure gold and perfection
Hot diggity dog! Good choice! Loaded a bowl for this one (I still got the Meshuggah Slow Burn on the back burner tho, I'm lackin!!)
Had a great time. Thanks for dropping Deftones on us today Geebz.
Man I love Diamond Eyes!!! ❤️❤️
killer ambiance. dreamy but heavy at the same time - that's real deftones.
Wow, I could have sworn you did this one from Deftones already!
This song and the album were a great turning point in the band for me, especially followed by my favorite album of their's, _Koi No Yokan,_ which has a distinctly different sound coming from them.
Diamond Eyes is a classic, and one that every new Deftones fan should listen to... after listening to all of White Pony, of course!
If anyone wants to hear a nice change of pace for the band, the song _Entombed_ off of _Koi No Yokan_ is one of my favorites. Very reserved & atmospheric, it's almost cathartic listening to it.
🤙🏼🤘🏼seeing them play Aloha Tower with Chi. Good memories. Mahalogato for doing this one.
Oh my bro, chill with the snow.
Geebz, you came through on this one....made my day!! xoxo
my favourite deftones track and album!!!! thanks for the video
I'm always blown away watching your mind work! The way you analyze a song gives me a new perspective of a song I've heard dozens of times. 👍👍
My favorite Deftones album! Beauty School is also another banger.
Hell yeah! congrats on getting back!
Yes 💪🏻 I suggested this it's my favourite deftones song, thanks!
Congrats on the your other projects! Glad to see some more vids but I'm sure it's nice to venture out into those other passions again as well.
I love that you offer us some glimpses into your life and don't just get right into the breakdown. It's so welcoming and reminds me of just sitting down and talking with my teacher and band in my high school jazz class. Love your channel!
You should check out 'Beauty School' off of this record. Super cool.
One of my top 3 tracks by Deftones. Cool cap btw. Syncopation at its finest.
Should definitely do a *Slow Burn* on Deftones one day!
That’s such great news about the puppets Geebz!! You can see how much joy that brings you.
If Meshuggah did a collab with Chino, this is what it would sound like. (you still have #periphery in your video description btw)
1:37 that reaction
This song was the first time I recognized the power of mixing and guitar tone: when everything pulls back with just the guitar and vocal... It sounds like a buzz saw; or just machinery that could easily take your hand off during its transition to the next verse.
If you really stop to listen to the lyrics and connect the dots, this album has a story woven through it. This is a comment I found that sums the story up on this album:
On his deathbed at the end of the album, the human-turned god-turned human (Chi?) addresses his wife. The album has told us that she existed as goddess, complex priestess, DIAMOND EYES, over the Earth for a very long time before the man begged her to let him join her ranks. She let him into her ROYAL chambers, and impressed with his compassion for the Earth, made him her king and gave him CMND. He distracted her from her duties with the pleasures of Earth. She lost her purity when SHE SAW THE BUTCHER. She waived her immortality to be with him physically, and they had a son. When the PRINCE and Earthlings destroyed the planet, she was killed. Earth ROCKET SKATED into a state of hell. The only remnant of the beautiful past was the SEXTAPE. The Prince asked his father to take a RISK by opening old wounds and making an attempt at forgiveness. If the father ever wanted to forgive the son, who had committed evil, he was available at 976-EVIL. Earth was a PLACE OF DEATH because it managed to tempt and ultimately kill the complex priestess who had ruled for so long.
I love Deftones. Their music is so unique. Koi No Yokan and Royal are pretty great as well
Got way into Deftones last week and now I see you did one of my favorite tracks too, what are the odds.
Please do Mudvayne - Nothing To Gein... That song has so much for you to dissect. You would absolutely love it.
YES! I was waiting on this one. The visuals are so ridiculous!
So it's funny you mentioned the rhythm guitars not being doubled, while those cabs were probably still multiple mic'd, they're still doing a left and right take!
i love this man..love his energy
Hi Geebz, I’m glad you’re getting back with the puppets!😊
Around the fur is their best album. "Change my mind"!
Thx for the reaction!
You need to check out 'Risk' and 'You've Seen The Butcher'. Some great songs with great off beat drumming
More Deftones! more, More, MORE! All of it, really lol
Excellent choice 🤘 Geebz ! Good to have you back 🫡
Still Geebz. Love the unexpected Deftones drop in the morning ❤️
I love your channel so much, keep doing what you're doing!
My favorite Deftones album, this song is what got me to be absolutely obsessed with Deftones 🥰
My favorite album. The album really shows off the amazing writing skills all around the band. Stephen is a tone king
Prince
From the same album 🙏
Love your work. I believe the metal community; as would I, love to see you review one of the most famous songs in the world of metal... Slayer's Angel of Death. I'll buy a a cup of coffee! *it has to be the original track because Tom Araya's scream in the intro is a "one and only take" meaning he was never able to replicate it, not once. And the guitars of the late Jeff Hanneman and the wicked licks of Kerry King will break your brain. I think it truly is the most epic scream ever recorded. Thank you for being an entertainer and reviewing metal. Can't get enough of it.
Oh and seeing your reaction to Tomas Haake with Meshuggah was awesome.
@Geebz, I’m about 2 weeks into watching you.. love what I’ve seen. I owe you a cup of coffee.
Can you review Deftones songs “Doomed User”, “CMND/CTRL”,“Rapture” and “What Happened To You?” with respect to your other requests and the other bands there are to review, in general?
Goddamn its been a minute since I've been here. Hope all is well my friend.
it's funny you say that about how it's easing you into the album, because the next song starts off with the classic Chino scream and you're right, it doesn't let up
Love your breakdowns man, I learn alot!
I use to tear up to this song.
So glad you're getting back into your work with the kiddos.
Great reaction as always.
Check out Crown Lands
Sup Geebz, Awwwright 🤙🤘. Love the Deftones. This track to me, it calms me a lot during the chorus. That breathy approach to Chino. Oh man I love it. I hope you can get to the drum cover of Earthside - The Closest I've Come and Beyond Creation - Earthborn Evolution (music video). Those 2 tracks will blow your mind in completely different ways. And a great circle back.
Love the djenty sound they tried out
great choice brother
Please do cherry waves! You will love the experience
Yes!!! More Deftones please!!!
Would love to see you check out something from their latest album Ohms. Some suggestions from the album:
The Spell of Mathematics
Error
Ohms
I feel like the use of negative space or rests is part of Deftones style and it suits them just like it suits mac Miller on swimming-react to that
As far as hitting play on an album and listening all the way through its: 1) Saturday Night Wrist and 2) Diamond eyes for me.
One of their fav songs
"I will take you away with me, once and for all" 😢😢😢
This is where a grown ass man started to cry like a baby...
You absolutely gotta do ""Risk" from this album. Would love to see you do some from their album Saturday Night Wrist - "Cherry Waves," "Xerces," and "Kimdracula" are all incredible.
Yes! Amazing album!
Please do the song Minerva by Deftones. Amazing video and song.
Love this album!!
Best fuckin album
took about 4 seconds and you knew you had a deftones song
Best Deftones song ever…
