In response to Chris Chen's question about how to configure the read cache (by 2 SSDs) in the PowerVault Manager(GUI) or CLI?: SSD Read Cache can be created during Disk Group creation. Only a single read-cache disk group may exist within a pool. Read cache does not add to the overall capacity of the pool to which it has been added. You can add or remove it from the pool without any adverse effect on the volumes and their data for the pool, other than to impact the read-access performance. You can create a read-cache disk group for a virtual pool under the following conditions: • the system includes available SSDs, and • the pool does not contain a virtual disk group comprised of SSDs (known as a Performance tier) Each read-cache disk group consists of one or two SSDs with a maximum usable capacity of 4TB. A separate copy of the data is also kept in spinning disks. Read cache contents are lost when a controller restart or failover occurs. This does not cause data loss or corruption, as the read cache only duplicates the content that exists in the fault-tolerant disk groups.
Moving from 3par to an ME5 I have an issue trying to add additional FC initiators to configured initiators/hosts (I have no SAN switch in a very small 2 host environment). Both the 3Par and ME5 were connected to the hosts without redundancy to transfer data between datastores, then after migration complete, add redundancy by removing the 3par, and adding those initiators to the ME5. It looks like I can't do this in GUI and need to do this in CLI. (Unfortunately I couldn't do this during deployment without a SAN switch) Fortunately I can contact Support Assist.
hi.. would you know summary of steps in adding an expansion enclosure to a running ME5 storage? as per deployment guide, a shutdown is required. other than that, nothing is mentioned.. on previous powervault (or generally on all storage), we normally power-on first the enclosure until all disks led are lit, then followed by the controller enclosure last to be powered on, would you know if its the same procedure on ME5?
Thank you for this video, very helpful. The part where you stated that each controller has its own pool - So if you have VM's running on one volume/pool, if the controller fails then we loose the data ?
No. It means that you are able to leverage twice the resources for higher performance when all equipment is operational. If a controller fails, the other controller takes over without interruption.
@@StorageReview ah great thanks for clarification on the failover. I'm confused on the performance part. If you have 2 pools they are going to be separate volumes, so your gaining performance by having the different volumes on their own controller but then your losing the maximum pool/volume size?
@@branagan1985 Think of it this way. If you have two horses pulling a cart at the same speed, both are putting in half the work. One horse dies, same cart, but probably a bit slower depending on how heavy that cart is loaded. The controllers have no issue with the capacity, its how much I/O load they are seeing. If you have a fully decked out ME5 config with all flash, there may be some situations where both controllers are under full load. For just hard drives this would never be an issue.
Thanks for your video. I have concern that when a volume in ME5024 is 4TB which provided to ESXi host but datastore in ESXi host just show 3,73TB available. Why the datastore is not 4TB? I have created a pool size with 19TB, a volume 4TB and the ESXi host mapped to the volume, FC connect.
In ME5024, do we see the used space for volumes as well? There is no option to create thin volumes and i'm not sure we are creating thin or thick volume.
@@StorageReview please let me know how to create thin volume. I can't see any option to create thin volume. I even checked tbe licenses, there is no description of thin privisioning, is it the reason?
@@StorageReview i think i got the reason. The pool we have in our storage is linear, not virtual. I think this is the reason we are not able to create thin volumes.
Rolled out a ME5024 recently half filled with 4TBs SSDs. Entry level guys were able to get it rolling in under an hour including unpacking it. Speed is fantastic. The background initialization on ADAPT did take a couple weeks to finish but otherwise had zero issues. Replacing a 5 year old compellent unit it was very nice. You can definitely tell they put a lot of the compellent tech under the hood.
Thank you for the video . I manage to install the device . My device has 6x2TB SSD and 9x2.4 HDD. What is the best practice ? Create performance pool in Pool A and the HDD in Pool B ? or can I create disk group in Pool A ? also as I have 9HDD , while I create RAID6 its take only 8 disks and one disk showing as spare , is there anyway I can add the 9th disk also to disk group ?
We are pretty new to the PowerVaults and just bought a ME5012 with one ISCSI controller. When I get to the Provisioning tab, there is an error that says "In order to provision your system, you must have ungrouped initiators or existing host or host groups." and I cannot get past it. All of the other screens are good and I created a disk group. Any idea what is wrong?
@@StorageReview Yep we got support, just figured I would ask here after watching your video but I think we got it sorted for the most part. I only configured an IP for a single port A01 and after configuring another port, and connecting that to our network, and realizing the ports are backwards starting with A3->A0, it looks like the web console changed and now I have many options for provisioning etc so we are making some progress. Thanks for the video !
Hi do you have a video for me5 iscsi ethernet setup
Thanks for releasing this vid! Side note: please fewer shorts and more full length vids.
Hah. Ok. Have another long form tomorrow and a new pod with Dell soon!

Ok, so the reason I can't create hosts is because I have to FULLY cable ALL iSCSI ports?
That shouldn't be required. Even with just one cable connected with both sides visible to one another should be enough.
What is the price?
@@castroleo679 usually this price band starts in the 20-25K area.
