I made a separate comment for this, but I think the “pill-popper” line is more a call out to Korean Hip Hop artists rather than a call out to hip hop rappers in general. Some rappers in the KHH scene have received a lot of criticism by trying to emulate all the negative sides of american hip hop culture in their goal of becoming “true hip hop”. Like rapping in english, thinking rapping fast is good rapping, and even mumble rapping. One of the heavier criticized acts has been the drug addiction. We know that drug addiction has been a badly painted side of american rappers, and has nothing to do with what being a good rapper actually is, but these khh rappers still purposely do drugs to try and be better rappers. So Yoongi is not calling out the addicts or the addiction itself, but rather the “copying” or the belief that drug-addiction is a part of hh culture, as that is actually very disrespectful.
We can’t know for sure, because Yoongi himself said he made very blanket statements for a reason, which is “if you think I’m talking about you, then that’s your problem.”

Another really great insight and this is the one I thought that the song led with. Some people are saying it's about him and how he has avoided becoming that stereotypical Hip-Hop person but I still think there's a bigger message being sent to hip hop as a whole.

@@AltSpace I'm kinda with you on this. I took it as a criticism of the glorification of drug use and even abuse* (like molly, cocaine and prescription drugs etc) that's prevalent in hiphop culture today. Not really "attacking" people/artists who struggle with addiction, kinda like you said. Like it's about the phenomena not necessarily the individuals.. It's about the drug "aesthetic" to me.
I base this somewhat on that Yoongi (Suga) is (or seems, idk him personally lol) a sympathetic person and I highly doubt that he would be so insensitive/mean as to shit on anyone for having problems with/suffering from substance abuse.
I use / a lot because English isn't my first language and it's hard to choose words to express myself sometimes. Hope it's not too disorienting/confusing!
Edit: * I say use and abuse because they hold different meanings.

King Suga is the old Agust D, back when he released his first mix tape, hence the older setting, older clothes etc and the scar on his face being fresh. Back then he wanted the fame and the money and he has admitted he was fuelled a lot by anger. The black haired Suga is today's Agust D, hence the car, new clothes, watch etc and the scar now being old. Today's Agust D now has all those things, he's not only reached where he wanted to be but he has surpassed it. And in doing so he has realised that all those things aren't really what's important in life, hence him talking about wanting to just put his feet on the ground and experience some normality. This whole scenario is him facing his old self and putting (or trying to, Suga said himself he's not sure whether old Agust D is completely gone) an end to him, saying he's not that person anymore. It's a statement saying "The old Agust D is gone, but I'm still here, just with different goals and priorities."

I thought about it backwards. He started off with nothing and now he's like a king and has everything but in the end he makes sure to let us know that he is still himself not letting being successful envelope him or change him. It's cool to see different interpretations.

Fun fact: all BTS's mixtapes and more are available for free on Soundcloud.
"Daechwita" is the music that is played in Korea when the king went on a walk or when the army marched. It's basically announcing the King has arrived. He also said he chose it because it fitted well with ARMY (BTS's fans) too. He sampled the music of "Daechwita".
It's both Agust D in the video! It actually represents the "ego king" and "rebel slave" in the MV. It's also not about someone else that is famous.
It's about the conflict within himself as he's someone who has achieved worldwide fame and struggles with wanting to keep his feet on the ground and having to carry the celebrity image. In the end of the video the "slave" shoots at the "king", showing he wants to get rid of that ego side. He said that he on purpose didn't show if the king got hit or not in the end. This is just the concept of the MV though, the lyrics don't exactly follow this and go into other things he wanted to say.
Also the fact that he is bragging is very rare to see in real life or any BTS content, they very much so deserve to brag with everything they have achieved by now, but they still keep humble and down to earth. I don't think you realize how succesful BTS is, both as solo and group artists and how hard they have worked for it. You should watch "from Nobodies to Legends" or the "BTS Crash Course 2020".
I also highly recommend you check out Agust D's full mixtape D-2 on your own to better grasp his mindset in this song. He has another song "Dear My Friend" on the mixtape that goes into his childhood friend that got lost in drugs, probably partly why he's so intolerant. The reason it's called D-2 is because it's his second mixtape. I would recommend the song "The Last" from his first mixtape (called just Agust D) where he really goes deep into his depression, social anxiety and more struggles.

Also, a little background info, one of his best friends from childhood, and into adulthood, went to jail for something to do with substance abuse. Someone already gave a great explanation on the pill 💊 popper lyric. However, I will add that Yoongi is just saying his NOT a weak pill popper-he doesn’t have to do that. So, rather than a call out -it’s more of a general statement about his success. He has often said to whomever needs to hear it “your failures are not related to my success”. BTS is all about accountability of one’s self.

  • @tysonn4736

My take on this song is that it's a bit of a sequel to the song Interlude: Shadow where Suga says "I wanna be a rap star, I wanna be the top, I wanna be a rockstar, I want it all mine, I wanna be rich, I wanna be the king." Well now he is the king and he's bragging a bit about that. But to me the real key to the song comes during the flow switch where is says "I got everything I wanted, what more'll make me feel contented, I wanted clothes clothes, then money money, then goal goal now what's next, Yeah what's next, here comes my reality check there's nowhere higher".
Also, both roles are played by Suga in the video. So in a way you can view the "King" Suga as the (false) pinnacle he desired in the past, and "Street" Suga as killing his own prior mistakes.
Also, love your videos. Your insight into broader hip hop culture really makes them worthwhile.

I also see a link with some songs of his previous mixtape, for instance in "the last" when he says that he feels that greed could turn him into a monster. I think "King Suga" here might be some sort of manifestation of that "monster" he's afraid to become. And in the end he kills that monster , tus it's all ok, he finally put this side of him under control

He's not speaking to anyone else's experience or feigning to be "their voice". He is HIS OWN voice directly pertaining to his own experiences and the people he has avoided or juked becoming. He could've easily fallen into the "other path". This song is about his own strength in finding his path and feeling grateful that he didn't go another way. He could've EASILY become that but he wants to share his Strong Mental Attitude that has nothing to do with anyone else.

Blond haired king Suga is the same guy as black haired modern day Suga. The story in the MV is modern Suga overthrowing the mad king who represents Suga's past self. If you watch closely, you will see Suga make a deal in the marketplace with the butcher. The butcher is also the executioner, so instead of killing Suga, he smuggles in a gun to help overthrow the mad king.
Daechwita is traditional Korean music played when the king or the army is in procession. So I think the best translation for this song would be something like "the king is here". Suga used real Daechwita music in the production of this song, and you can hear it especially at the beginning of the track.
FYI, Agust D = Suga = Min Yoongi, and he is a member of BTS. He uses the Agust D name for his solo music which he produces himself. Suga is his stage name as a member of BTS. He is often credited as one of the producers and/or writers on BTS songs. He has also produced songs for other Korean artists, such as "Eight" with IU, "So Far Away" with Suran, and "Song Request" with Lee Sora".

Both Suga and RM of BTS were prominent underground rappers in Korea. They were derided by some fellow rappers when they signed onto an "idol" group saying that the two had been on the right path but succumbed to temptation by doing so. These rappers told them that they were basically performing as girls since idols wore make-up on stage. So some parts are responses to particular people. However the main message is as you said, he's climbed so high but wants to keep his feet on the ground. The blonde Agust D is based on a real historical figure who became paranoid and power mad. The dark haired Agust D conspires with the butcher from the beginning of the MV, who is also the executioner, to rebel and kill the king. Suga is in effect killing off any shadow urges to keep his ego in check and feet on the ground. BTW the fellow with the fishing pole and the guy with whom he fights are members of BTS, JIN and Jungkook. Supposedly the girl that's holding the box that holds the jade car key represents the fan base ARMY. Also the framed saying above Suga's head in this scene is from Confucius and means "the classical scholar doesn't value treasure".

Great to see another reaction from you! Welcome back! As I understand it, "Daechwita" is a type of traditional Korean music that is played when an army starts marching, or to announce the arrival of the king. Also there's only one rapper in this - it's Suga/AgustD the whole time. He plays both the tyrannical king with blonde hair and the peasant/street kid with the black hair. Both have a scar across their right eye, to show they are connected (I believe). My own interpretation of the video is that the king Suga represents the famous, successful, possibly greedy side of him (or what he could potentially be if he let his greed and fame go to his head) - he has reached the top and beheads anyone who displeases him. The peasant Suga represents the side of him that wants to be grounded in reality and stay grateful and humble (as much as Suga flexes in this song, I think the line "I only looked up and now I want to look down and put my feet on the ground" is the most important one in the song, that's just my opinion, though!). That's why peasant Suga kills king Suga at the end - he's metaphorically putting an end to that side of himself (or potential side). DKDKTV did a theory video on this one, too, which has some good ideas and explanations. Sorry for the long comment! Hope it all made sense. XD

Suga aka Agust D👑 is a well known producer and songwriter in south korea, he even won a award. Suga released their second mixtape 'D-2' and his songs quickly positioned in the most important places of music chats worldwide .
Suga has become the first South Korean solo artist to enter both the Billboard album and single charts at the same time, following the release of the "mixtape" "D-2" with his title track "Daechwita" . Inspired by traditional Korean music used for the military march and royal parade, "Daechwita" combines the sound of traditional Korean wind and percussion instruments with the hiphop musical sub-genre "trap".
Agust D 2, Suga's second mixtape has received a lot of support from fans and his music has positioned himself in the best places on the music charts, breaking several records. Suga's second solo record material, 'D-2' is in seventh place on the official album chart in the UK, the country's music list is considered one of the most important in the world. Suga has become the first South Korean soloist to have record material on the UK music chart and place his work in such an important position on the chart. Suga is one of the most influential Korean producers and musicians in the music industry. entertainment, thanks to the talent of the rapper from the company Big Hit, many artists seek to collaborate with him.

this artist has dealt with depression and social anxiety. with that being said, he's absolutely not mocking it. he's made several songs touching this topic and about mental awareness. :) it's about him... he's reached that level of success. he plays two roles though... also him... an internal conflict. and it's resolved at the end... you know, the "king" getting shot. daechwita is the background music that's being played when the king in the korean dynasty is about to go out and do a "march." it signifies the entrance of the king.

Welcome back! I’m really liking your reactions!!! When Yoongi (Agust D) talked about Daechwita, he said he made this song to be more of an auditory-pleasing song rather than hold much meaning. The MV follows a story line connected to his past MV, but there isn’t much depth to the song outside of that. However, the album itself D-2, is my second favorite album of 2020 so far. Even if you don’t react to it, I would love for you to listen to it, as Yoongi as always been a storyteller and you seem like the type of person who enjoys that. In D-2, Yoongi opens up and shares his fears, dreams, feelings, and thoughts about making it so big and though the album struck me as very nostalgic, sad, and lonely, it’s also extremely comforting, raw, and emotional. Trust me, it’s an experience. If you do want to delve deeper and listen to the album, I would recommend staying far away from the lyric videos here on yt as they have horrible translations and instead share this site, a translation page by a fellow ARMY: doolsetbangtan.wordpress.com/d-2/

I recommend you to watch BTS Interlude: Shadow (there is the short version of the song in the video, the full length version is in the Map of the soul: 7 album). It's Suga's solo where he speaks that he wanted to become big but he hasn't known how hard it is to be famous (especially to him cause we know he is an introvert). There are two Sugas in the video - him and his shadow (his fears). This song is part of BTS's albums era Map of the Soul based on psychologist Carl Jung's Map of the Soul. According to Jung, "the Shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. This act is the essential condition for any kind of self-knowledge."
As the other ARMYs has already said, you should become familiar with the guys' personalities and background cause their experience, thoughts, fears definitely reflects in their music. Once you know the songs hit differently.
Who is BTS?: The Seven Members of Bangtan is a good introduction (though it's a little bit outdated) along with BTS From Nobodies to Legends and BTS' Contribution to Music.
    Thank you for the reaction.

About the “pill popper” line I think he’s calling out K HipHop for trying to distort the culture because actual HipHop cover drugs and other vices because it is a part the writer’s life as contrast to these “rappers” in Korea who do vices to make it seem like they’re HipHop. Why he’s taking shots at this is because BTS got a LOT of crap, him and RM especially, from the K HipHop community for debuting in a Kpop idol group and discriminating their work saying that that’s not HipHop and just “rap” just cuz they’re a part of an idol group.

    • @AltSpace

Thanks for your comment! What's an idol group? I'm still learning lool

    • @KRYONart
      @KRYONart 4 роки тому +8

AltSpace “idol groups” are what Koreans call kpop groups, the Korean equivalent of “boy/girl bands” or “boy/girl groups”. In context regarding the hate and usual preconceived notions, I think there’s a general stereotype with regards to Boy Groups and Girl Groups around the world, or to those who’re looking in, that it’s just a “teen girl” thing. Some of it’s understandable considering that not a lot of pop groups have creative control, this is especially true for kpop group. They’re packaged in a very groomed, aesthetically pleasing act. Very few groups have creative freedom, and BigHit, BTS’ company gives them that. However, in the beginning they didn’t have that much support especially from the the KHipHop scene in spite the bulk of their songs as a group fall under HipHop.

The mad king (his past-self) and his current self finally facing himself while the lyrics are a diss to haters and modern 'artists' in music today how its all based around the mindset of drugs, money, and women. The song goes realll in depth like all of BTS' other songs (this is a rapper from the group). if you want you can check out this song explained by a korean and he breaks down the meaning of every lyric and the symbolism in the MV!

Suga had been in the past in a troubled mental state, and he did not go to drugs to overcome it (he has been diagnosed with social phobia, anxiety, and Depression). He also had a friend that went to jail bc of drugs and the very moment the dude got out, and Suga tried to go close to him again, the guy offered him drugs. Again. But also, those rappers that use excuses to not only stay in the addiction but also glorify it and get more young people into it, needs to be called out. Because: ok, you have a problem, but why glorify it and bring more people into it by making it look "cool" when you KNOW how much suffering it's causing you and your loved ones?
Also, in the video and the song he plays TWO characters battling one another. The "King" is his more ambitious/power-hungry side. The peasant is his true self, that was silenced and tied sometimes, but in the end, overcame and killed/put under control that "bad" side of him.

Dech-i-ta = Daechwita is music played by guards/military as they march or 'walk' the King out of his palace. AgustD aka Suga is the only rapper here. Also not 'cowbells', what is unfamiliar to you are Korean traditional music instruments. Ruthless King and a servant/slave (true event) ancient story. The lyrics have nothing in common with the MV. Agust D is always spitting bullets at society and others (both Korean), who have been kicking dirt at him. Popping pills is not generalized to all rappers and hip hop. He would not criticize other societies/cultures. He is going after KHipHop entertainers.

daechwita is a type of traditional military style korean music that’s played while marching. Pretty sure it was also played when the king would go marching into town with all of his 103792 servants on 10489284 horses and military haha
So the chorus? Is sort of implying ya daechwita play it loud cuz I’m the king and I’m coming.
And he sampled that music into the track (mostly in the beginning and the chorus with the bagpipe sounding instrument)

Fun fact there was a rumor going around that Suga/AGUST D was going to collab with logic for either this new mixtape (d-2) or logic’s album bc they took a photo together in logics studio and it seemed like they were working on something together. This however was before quarantine and suga:/AGUST D said a lot of planned collabs didn’t end up working out bc of quarantine.
Honestly I think you’ll enjoy AGUST D’s mixtape, it’s called D-2. It’s really personal and kinda gives you an in into his thoughts and emotions about various issues. You can find lyric translations on genius, I think they do a decent job. But for the most reliable translarons I’d suggest the website doolset lyrics. If u just google doolset d-2, the lyrics for all the songs should come up.
    I wouldn’t trust lyric vids
Also you don’t have to do a reaction to the album. I’m just recommending this bc I just think you’ll enjoy and get something out of it :)
But if you do react to it or some of it, pretty sure army will enjoy the hell out of it lol
    Anyways I like ur channel!

They are the same people :D Daechwita = traditional Korean music played when a king or an army enters a village
He is talking about stereotypes that a person low in social status cannot become a king but he has, you can link this to BTS and the discrimination they faced when they debuted because of stereotypes that groups from small companies wont get anywhere. You can further link this to breaking stereotypes through the rebellion of the people against their king, in the beginning we see rows of people bowing down to their King, who obviously mistreats ( A. he stood on some of them. B. in the scene where people are lined up to be beheaded you can see an instrument - i don't know the proper name- that was used when the people wanted to make a complaint or judgement to the way the king ruled, therefore leaving us to assume their king was killing those who suggested change) these people later head-bang with lower class Suga, showing they've joined him in rebellion.
