Ozzy is instantly recognizable when heard in a song, and he's a really good rock singer. He's not the best, but that's not what music is all about. He has a large catalogue of really good songs ( I don't know if he wrote them or not ) and that's all there is to that.
Ozzy isn't technical like a Mariah Carey for example but I've never heard a live, in concert vocalist with as much raw sincere power and tonality as Ozzy. If you have heard better, please let me know.
I really do agree with Lita about Ozzy's singing. When you look at some of his songs with Sabbath, his voice can go high. He also has his albums Down To Earth, No More Tears, Diary of a Madman (that's all I can think of right now that can demonstrate his voice) where his vocal range is big. Like compare Dreamer and Gets Me Through in vocals. While Dreamer his much lower, and more like his singing today, Gets Me Through is high pitched. His voice is unique and I feel like people just take one listen and are just like, "Nah, he can't sing," when they haven't even really listened. Even my Grandma liked his voice and his music, and she doesn't even listen to metal!
Ozzy is the man, the Prince of Darkness. It always amazes me that when he speaks you can hardly understand a word he says but when he sings it’s crystal clear, and he has a beautiful strong voice, it’s truly amazing.
Reminds me of that Mel Brooks 'It's Good To be King' where atrocious behaviour becomes 'acceptable' and 'endearing' because of the power and influence of the person doing it.
