Ron Wood's Rhythm Guitar Riffs in Faces and Rolling Stones | Reverb Learn to Play

  • Rolling Stones/Faces guitarist Ron Wood's playing (both with iconic bands and solo) stretches beyond the parameters of a typical player. With his talent for slide guitar, lap steel, acoustic, and lead playing, it would be easy to make a full series of Ron Wood videos, but today Jeff Massey is taking the time to focus on Wood's rhythmic leanings.

Great to see and hear this, I’d always maintained that Ronnie’s bass playing on the first two Jeff Beck Group albums was his finest hour, but there’s no denying his individual approach and unique tone on guitar (esp with the Faces) which definitely deserves more attention. He earned his gig with the Stones, and when he played on ‘Its only rock n roll’ (title track only) he still had that distinctive biting Faces guitar tone.

I call him RON. FIRST i would recommend Ron's first band The Birds, (1964-66) who sound as explosive as the early Who, with punkier vocals. Check out "A Collector's Guide to Rare English Birds", which collects all their singles and plenty of unreleased gems. The Birds led Jeff Beck to ask Rw to form the JB Group, originanally as guitarist - when ex Bird bassist Kim Gardner split Ron switched to bass and the 2 JBG albums Hugely influenced the early Led Zeppelin records, musically and even on term of engineering/mix etc. Ron & Rod were then in Faces of course - check out how expressive, warm, delicate and raunchy, loose and tight Ron's work is on say "Long Player", the layered accoustics, lead electric, pedal steel, slide work (& great songwriting) blend together to create the groups fully accomplished musical personality, something technique alone cannot achieve. Another thing evident in rw's playing is wit ('Cut Across Shorty', 'Too Bad' 'Its All Over now'). Too bad indeed his songwriting skill is not utilized more in the Stones. My Favorite Stones RW lps are SOME GIRLS, EMOTIONAL RESCUE, & BRIDGES TO BABYLON. As for his solo work NOW LOOK & NOT FOR BEGINNERS are my faves. And for Faces fans check out the Wood/RONNIE LANE soundtrack MAHONEY'S LAST STAND, which features the other Faces and some terrific songs ('Just For A Moment', 'Mona the Blues').....thanks all for the great comments!

I saw The Stones many times starting in '81 which only got better through the years. A very interesting time was at a show in 2014 in Spain where I saw them reunite with Mick taylor. On Midnight Rambler everyone was fantastic, Taylor did something different from his 70's shows and was great, keith as always hammers the hell out of Rambler, Jagger on the harp was better than I'd ever seen him live getting close to his 69 through 73 performances, not fucking about but playing the hell out of the harp. However! The big surprsie was Ron Wood and not cause he hasn't always held his own in my opinion but because he dropped a bomb of a solo, it was very unique even for him and was not trying to be competitive but he just demonstrated what unusually great shit he could pull out of his hat and he did, not better than Taylor just brilliant right up there with him but doing his own thing showing that each player is a unique artist. I never saw such a brilliant colloboration of 3 distinct guitar players live in my life.

Gr8 Bass player too & uses open tunings but a fabulous artist too .. his paintings & sketches .. I sat in a bar with a crowd of folk around him & he was as unobtrusive & not a rock star as anybody I've ever met .. just another guy in the bar & only the muso's around knew who he was .. all around a cool guy .

Great Video... i have always enjoyed Ron's vibe ( he also wrote one of the best autobiographies ever) taking you up on your suggestion and i would love to see more Ron! I also think someone who channels Ron and i love his vibe is Rich Robinson. Thanks man
