Has this kid been to Australia? The reason fuel, alcohol etc is so expensive is because we are so far away from the rest of the world.

Yes, but it's different in rural Australia (smaller cities)to the expense, crime, and rat race of Melbourne or Sydney.
Australia is still one of the cheaper fuel prices.
MELBOURNE AND SYDNEY have lost their way compared to a lot of the rest of the countryside. Usually the people who complain are people that are unhappy with everything!!
I've lived in England, Canada, and New Zealand. AUSTRALIA is still the best!!

It seems like a much higher cost of living in Australia if you look just at the cost, but there's some interesting world studies on costs relative to minimum wages, which is a more valid comparison.
You'd earn enough for a Big Mac with 19 minutes' work in Australia, but you'd work for 25 in the UK, 26 in America.
If you compare medical costs, Australia is only beaten by the networked Nordic countries.
Average dwelling prices in the major cities: Sydney AUD 1.156M, London AUD 0.966M, New York AUD 1.2M. If you look at how many hours you have to work for the average house: Sydney 47,967; London 43,969; NY 66,667.
Statistics from 16 May 2024 from the International Energy Agency (IEA) show that Australia has the fourth lowest petrol and diesel prices of thirty OECD countries. USA has the lowest, with about an average 5c/L difference between our two countries. UK is 21st.

Our minimum wage per hour just went up to $24.10, or $915.21 per week, on a permanent 38 hour week. Plus, people who have a permanent position are also entitled to 0ne day every 6 weeks for sick leave, and they get paid their normal rate for the time taken off when sick. Also we get 4 weeks fully paid holiday leave per year, and on top of that, your employer must also pay you 17.5% of your total four weeks holiday pay, just as some extra money for you to have to spend and or enjoy your holiday a bit more. Casual employees do not get these extras, but earn quite a bit more for each hour they work. Casual employees get paid more money depending on the day of the week, and the time of the day they work ie:
working friday & saturday nights, you get paid 'time and a half' ie your hourly amount plus half of it on top. EG; if you were earning say $30 per hour for casual work that involved weekend nights and sundays- mostly hospitality - your employer would have to pay you 'time' ie $30 per hour, plus half ie: $15 dollars, so added together your pay would be $45 per hour for these times. Sundays or public holidays are classified at "Double time", so yep, you would get your normal rate of say $30 doubled ie: you would earn $60 per hour. Also our employers must match the rate of money taken out of our wages for superannuation - this is money that is taken out of our pay and invested for us to receive when we retire, along with a pension paid by the Federal Gov. which is quite generous. We do pretty well over here!

Nah,lotsa misleading info here.Having said that our ratrace isn't as insane as other ratraces. Fuel & alcohol is expensive but I don't drink so fuel isn't a real problem, you just grumble like anyone else ! Food is sometimes expensive, definitely seasonal but is of a much higher standard than Americans are used to. Stay away from big cities if you can......large regional centres are far more liveable.Certainly housing is better. Life is terrific in Oz.......yes,you will always find something to moan about but, hey, when the sun shines & the air is clean....so what ? Research it. If you have needed skills you are wanted. If you have skills of any kind you will be well-regarded.If you just want to come speak to migration agencies, family &/or friends already here, but don't try it blindly. Research, research, research. Then come, you will be welcome.
