If you get a chipper you won't own it. It will own you. Enjoy minimalist freedom:)
Wow! NOW THAT is something to think about! boom! what a comment and perspective. thanks man
The past five years I’ve been the lead climber for a big tree company where I’m from, working through weather permitted 3-5 days a week all bigs trees. Now I own my own company, really enjoy getting a call and it’s something simple like the tree you took down. I appreciate the small jobs now, the money is there and it’s simple. Great to see you’ve got some work again!
Great to hear I'm not alone in appreciating those small jobs! I mean, don't get me wrong: I'll still schedule some bigger stuff that take more time and planning and all of that, but when those bigger jobs come in back-to-back it's just a drain. Keep it up man
Ahhhhhhhhhhh my friend you hit the nail on the head 😁😁😁..who needs a chipper ..ish🤔🤔.. I'm just glad you Own a small yellow school bus 👍👍😁😁.. I would even mention a stump grinder... not yet?? Welcome to my life.. Firefighting one day tree removal the next..☺️☺️☺️.. nice work..
You would have been perfect on that late night call I got the other night: the fire department needed someone to take care of a tree!? I was surprised to learn they don't carry a chainsaw with them on the fire truck.
Nice work
Thanks buddy!
Meta - thanks for vocalizing that you are fine with the set up you have. I am a solo guy and have a flatbed trailer and a 2wd ford. Seems like everyone around me has lifts and. crazy equipment. I ENJOY my tiny tree service. Keep em coming.... from MN
Good to hear it man. Yeah, the predominant wisdom seems to be "bigger is better" but I find a small, lean outfit can get a lot of work done, have fun, and make good $$
Small jobs are the best. Start around 7:30am and done in time to get chick-fil-a breakfast. Keep it up Spencer!
Not only that, when you start that early there's the joy of waking up the neighborhood. haha! I just read this comment to my wife and she responded "Chick-fil-a makes breakfast?" haha
Another thing about the chipper comments is that it doesn’t solve the problem of the trunk pieces. Chippers that can take entire trees are a few hundred thousand dollars, so he would still need a dump trailer. That means more trips to switch between chipper and dump trailer. And no, you’re not throwing large logs into the back of a dump truck or large chipper box.
This isn't a how to video for getting rid of mice, it just a video on how I got rid of mice.
A short but enjoyable video.
Cheers
Michael (from Scotland)
haha you said it ... if those mice come back I'm gonna have to bring the barn cats in on the job
Right on man old school old fashion work great stuff no need for all that u have what u need to make your money keep doing u
I appreciate that. Thanks man
@@metaspencer yeah buddy that’s how I have been doing it for years it always works
I'm with you on the small jobs. They are a welcome break from the bigger life-threatening, mentally draining jobs. If we worked exciting and intense tree jobs every day, the odds are we wouldn't live long to talk about it. Cheers
You said it man. Keep things balanced and flowing along
I called in sick 😷 today ! I've been Spencering the whole day ! Critters love to eat your $ ... F150 in my yard , squirrels ate most of the wiring ! My daily Cobalt , same ! Love your channel ! And I got to see a ground crew helper that says this is Not a how to video 👍 😂
Oh that's so cool! Thanks for buzzin' around the channel and checking things out ... Hope you feel better
Big or small🌲🌲. its fun to fell them ALL. Spence, I love your solo tree-man setup. Your overhead is very small and you have very limited headaches in running your business. I prefer solo working myself. I'm more efficient, i'm safer, and I dont have to explain my ways of doing things to anyone. Keep up the great work. Stay safe and keep on truckin 🇺🇸🪵🪓🪵🌲🪵🪓🌲
Great to hear your thoughts and to know we've got some similar perspectives! Plus you have the best tree icons on the block: 🪵🪓🪵🌲🪵🪓🌲
Great job 👍
Love your explanation about not getting a chipper! Totally agreed!!
Awesome video, I wish every job was as weird and novel as helping a fire crew. Pretty comical, probably could have sent a single crew to watch it burn itself out and make sure it didn't burn any further.
That was very Mennonite of you to question the unintended consequences of a chipper. I'm just reaching that stage where I'm tailoring my equipment for my situation. I'm loaded with rigging equipment for contracting, but trying to bump up my solo stuff. Love working solo jobs, no pressure, control of every step, just a bit more zen.
It's interesting to hear about that gear and work transition you're in the midst of and thinking about ... I've only done a bit of contract climbing but bought some rigging stuff (blocks) I seldom use these days. I appreciate your perspective
Spencer maybe it is an idea to look around for a chipper where the trailer part is broken
(axle broken / drawbar broken / had a small accident) and needs to be replaced and is therefore cheaper,
and then you don't mount it back on a trailer
but on the back of your pick-up truck between the toolboxes and you blow the chips into your dump trailer,
maybe that is more of a combination for you,
so you have a cheap chipper and you have little to adjust to your existing combination
Cool idea -- I hadn't thought of that option. It could work out!
Enjoyed the video. Great explanation on your attitude towards tree work. I agree. Bigger you get the bigger the problems. You may make more money with more equipment, personnel working on BIG tree projects. But, what about the mind. What about happiness, enjoyment, etc. I like working with one good ground person. I pick the job to match me and my resources. I enjoy my work. 👍
Great perspective man! Gotta keep the mind and body healthy out there for sure. It's great to hear that you have a good ground person to work with ... that creates some great synergy when the fit is right
Next video: Spencer adds a siren and red lights to the work wagon!🤣🤣🤣
You read my mind man :)
How’d I miss this one Spencer?? Good job. Right around this time I took down 4 60’ balsams at my camp. 2 were toast so I took the four. They had a ton of limbs. I had help that day so it wasn’t a bad day.
I've been dreaming of some good clean tree work like those balsams. Lately I've had all kinds of scabby storm damage to deal with. But it's warming up!
Better to be Chipper, than to have a Chipper.. Also, congrats on some first-responder action! Always a good time! Sort've!
Be chipper! hahaha ... I like that one :)
I would rather do a bunch of small jobs in a day than a big job that takes several days. It's a good feeling to go in, do the work and then you're on you way to the next one. Pretty bizarre burning tree job. You won't be forgetting about that one any time soon. Have a good one!
Good to hear I'm not alone in appreciating the smaller jobs :)
@@metaspencer Yeah, totally!
Love the variety of the smaller jobs. I just purchased an electric chain saw on a pole and it's been the cat's meow for trimming the shrubs and small trees in our yard. It's much easier than breaking out the Stihl or the lopper on a stick. Oh, and I fired up my 5hp chipper and made mulch for the flower bed with the trimmings. Having a chipper is nice. . .
What a coincidence: I just got a telescoping battery powered chainsaw and it's pretty darned great for smaller pruning jobs. Light, easy, fast, etc. gotta use the right tool for the job :)
@@metaspencer I chose to get a 110v version as I'll use it near an outlet or a portable generator and I didn't want to get into another battery system.
Catching up on past episodes. A Chipper means more investment & hiring ground crew. Better off hiring a chipper if needed.
great point ... I recently rented one and it worked out well, but I'd rather not own one
I love the smaller jobs, lets me go into autopilot a little and ponder the stuff I haven't got round to. Currently trying to figure out how to get a trailer like that. Not a common design here but looks amazing! Been doing tree work off an on for a few years, but I've just finally got the proper certification and figuring things out; I too reckon the chipper just adds a bit more complexity and also seems to encourage double or even triple handling sometimes.
It was a fortunate accident when I found that green trailer used at a lot nearby ... it just seemed right and has been a good one for a lot of things. I still roll with a flatbed trailer for certain jobs and when hauling equipment, but being able to dump really works for me.
@@metaspencer It's a beaut!
Great to see another Metaspencer video drop. interesting content especially the burring tree. good explanation of the real day to day tree work. Jobs aren't always the glamorous big tree fells. Keep making, will keep watching.
You said it man: the glamorous moments can be few and far between :)
Nice 200t!!!
My buddy hooked me up with it recently and I've been using it a bit ... dang thing is OFF THE CHAIN powerful. Fun saw to run
Wow!
Small world. I lived in Ithaca NY for 10 years. Right at the road from where you turned ( At the Octopus) back up 17. Thanks for taking me back.
Each job is big to someone. Stay safe.
The octopus! They kinda re-engineered that area a bit but it’s still wacky. Great coincidence
I rock the truck & trailer combo (no chipper) as well, works for me… I use a utility trailer so although it doesn’t dump, everything can be loaded and offloaded at waist level, as well as cut down with the saw without having to jump inside and walk on top of the load. large rounds can be rolled up the ramp.
I rolled out with a similar trailer for many years and really liked it: lower, like you said, and that thing could handle an amazing amount of stuff! In fact, now that you mention it you got me thinking "Dang, I really miss that old trailer." I even fabricated a little stubby back piece so it didn't always have to have the ramp on there. Keep it going man!
@@metaspencer Watching you lift those spruce rounds over your head and chuck em in the trailer I was like “dang man this guy is doing it like I was in my 20’s… impressive!” Thanks for the inspiration, keep on killing it!
@@mtbguidecoeurdalene2741 At 52 I guess I got that ol' man strength :) on the good days that is
Enjoyed the vid and I appreciate your mentality, I share it. Stay safe🤘
Thanks buddy!
I worked without a chipper for a long time, same reason as you. I work for someone now and we chip. Love it of course, but we do bomb dead (mostly ash) directly into a high sided dump truck. Highly recommend that. Keep doing it how you’re doing it my man.
Those dead ash trees just keep on coming! It's pretty crazy out there. I like you're perspective which seems to be that there are different ways to do it ... and do it well.
@@metaspencer exactly what I’m saying. If you haven’t noticed on the sale sites, there are a ton of chippers for sale. Guys can’t find help so they’re going to grapple trucks. Cut it all down then grapple load it up into giant boxes. Where you would normally chip as you go which takes more man power. What you’re doing is the same method, just takes a little more time and energy, but costs a big fat zero.
That's a pretty interesting observations. I have noted the rise of the grapple and there sure are a lot of chippers out there for sale. Help is hard to find at the same time. Something to think about for sure.
Thank you
Good hearing from ya!
I myself have 2 chippers and I'd be lost without them at this point in my career. Nothing wrong with the way you do it and I did that for a long time.
All that matters is that the person running the show is happy with the way it go's and the job gets done.
Good video Spencer and you have a great setup
You said it man: once you work out a system that works for ya, that's what it's all about!
I am with ya. I like the slow steady pace and exercise. More equipment mire problems for sure. Even my small pto chipper takes alot of work to keep going. I would rather be out cutting and climbing
I have a buddy with a PTO chipper and if I find a good deal on one I'll probably get one for jobs around the farm -- good to hear your perspective on it all man!
@metaspencer . I have done alot of trees with it. And backyards are perfect cause I can drive my tractor back and chip it all and then haul logs off. Around here there is almost always a place I can spray the chips. But it takes time to chip
I bought a small chipper and it was worse than nothing. I LOVE CHIPS for the garden, better weed suppression than landscape fabric (never) or bark mulch, but you would generate way more than anyone could use.
I've been tempted by some of those smaller chippers, but then I've feared they'd end up sucking (like you describe). I'm always toying with the idea of using plastic to keep weeds down in the garden, but I've never gone there. Instead I just use a hoe and kinda like it :)
Bio360 plastic film that warms the soil and degrades in a year-pricey though. Will try this year
It is to have you back on the youtuber. Thanks for the interesting two-parter video. 🌲🪚👨🚒🔥
Woohoo! Thanks Janet
Hey brother, you don't need a chipper when you have the ground crew with you. But I noticed the ground crew took today off. The ground crew takes a lot of days off, lol. Thanks for the How you video. Take care brother and may Father YHVH bless y'all.
I've gotta look around for that ground crew! Where are those guys??? :)
Oh neat!! I didn't know you were in Ithica, I'm in Albany!
Albany! Excellent. Yeah, we moved out here just a year-and-a-half ago ... great trees here for sure
At the moment I still load everything into my dump trailer by hand, it does well, especially when I chop everything up smaller to fill all the voids as I stack it in the trailer. I mainly work solo as well, I have dabbled with running a 6 inch chipper pulled behind my dump trailer and that worked really well. It also opened me up to do chip and spread jobs where people wanted erosion protection. There are pros and cons. I'm hoping for my business to get a chipper this year and allow me to chip into the bed of my 350 or into the trailer. I respect the hustle and stay safe and keep it up.
it sounds like you've established some good work flows and are moving in some new directions ... well done man! there is no doubt about it that chipping has a lot of pluses and benefits
If you do decide to do a chipper. I use the old chuck and duck style. I'll swear by them until I retire. It's gotten tough finding any equipment shops to work on old equipment. But all a whisper chipper is is an engine usually straight 6, a clutch, and a drum. As long as the bearings are good and you can change the knives. Pretty much any shop will do anything else and you're like me mechanically un-inclined. If you are handy with a wrench you can't get more simple. Plus they're usually cheap as people tend to have an ignorant fear of them. Sure they're violent but that's what keeps people on their toes! No one ever tries to kick something into a chuck and duck!
thanks for that perspective -- yeah they've become feared with the newer style of chipper, but I'm always on the lookout for a good used one
Completely with you on the time thing. I am a youth worker by trade and if we gave everyone quality time I feel like life would get better for a lot of people. I wander the streets and catch up with folks on the journey. Never know who I am going to meet and what we're going to talk about. It's fun.
What an interesting job that must be/have been -- lots of important relationships and contributions there, I'm guessing.
My boss hates it when we chit chat with customers / our bosses ! I'm a municipal worker and Most people Do Care and are really neat to talk to !
I too do not and will not run a chipper.
You have to have a dedicated truck with a chip box and you have to have a place to take the chips. In my area the local landscaping supply yards will not accept commercial/residential chips as they cannot guarantee the chips don't have invasive species in them.
Also like you said, a chipper is expensive!
I just burn my loose material and I cut up the bulk to use/sell as firewood.
I am not a tree trimming company but I get enough tree/brush removal jobs that I can heat my house via wood stove with what I cut up on jobs.
You said it man: even the chip can be tough to deal with. When you have a system that works for ya, as you describe, why change it? thanks man
when you ende up getting a chipper just attach it to the dump trailer and you will be good to go!
Sounds like a wild ride!
I own a chipper, I’m currently trying to sell it to go to a dump trailer. Chipping everything ends up being twice the work and takes way longer then just throwing it in the trailer.
Interesting! I've suspected that might be the case but haven't heard anyone mention the slowdown of chipping. thanks man
U cant use a chipper in a RV park... its way too noisey
Good point! didn't think about that
you know, if you think about it, when you have a chipper on the job, you pick up the branch and feed it in and you don't touch it again.
when you don't have a chipper on the job, you pick up the branch and throw it into the dump trailer and you don't touch it again.
SO, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
about $50,000 for a used chipper and another $50,000 for a chip truck, dat's de difference here.....
seriously, I have a pto chipper for my tractor and I chip into barrells when I have no place to blow them and dump them into the bucket and then do whatever with them.
works great and it cost me $3,500 brand new.
I'm with you man: chippers seem to me like massive money pits in many situations. plus, if you love the work handling brush can be a great part of the whole process. plus, some chippers look pretty slow
Are you pulling that 12 or 14 ft trailer with a 1500 truck or a 2500?
F350 with air bags ... I've pulled it with my older 2500 Chevy but it's not a good deal.
Being a solo operator, I think a chipper would be unsafe, no matter how skilled and experienced a person is. Not having a two man crew, could be fatal...
There ya go! Reason #6! Thank you man
@@metaspencer youtuber/tree cutter Bino H, just did a chipper safety video on his channel.
I’ll check it out … I like his vids
Steve Buscemi
haha
Yup ur sounding too much like me..... i prefer the smaller jobs..... the big jobs are just too life draining and not really satisfying anymore.... eventually u will be the same in that regard.... good rant on the chipper, i did not take account of the maintenance issue involved with them so that was handy to know..... best off hiring one if really needed... so its their problem. I hope 911 payed u well for the late night dangerous call out, next time put some emergency lights on ya vehicle and play the siren....lol
A siren! I need one for sure. I like how you frame things and think, but I've gotta admit that I take those big jobs sometimes both for the challenge and because they help pay the bills.
@@metaspencer being a slave to the elite sucks and I really do understand that the big jobs can pay the bills so long as u charge the right price for urself to do so, dont make my mistake and charging too cheap and not being able to pay the bills.
you are my brother... I will send you a very good thing on Facebook :)
Thanks for those messages and links man. Those PTO choppers really DESTROY the branches. Awesome man
@@metaspencer I think what I sent you is also an extra solution :)
No chipper desired to save time and energy Spencer, yet you extensively edit your vids to appear to get done quickly and with not that much energy used.
There's always some sweat and hard work out there! Thanks what I like about it :)
