Makes great feed we used to cut it at boot stage, we would use it more as a filler in our tmr ration for milk cows, great young stock feed! Also we did thee live trap and relocate for a long time, then we took to rougher methods, unfortunately our feed is too valuable too play nice with the varmints, thanks from mn

You can also use the backhoe to knock the feed loose before scooping. Might be a little bit more messing around but idk why it wouldn't work

TIM from Canada if you put a tarp or a piece of plastic under your… flap that goes into your auger this way at the end, you have easy way to clean up all you have to do is pull your tarp out and everything is on your tarp. no tarp means that you were digging stuff off the ground and usually dirt or mud or get into this some sort of a tarp under your equipment is going to help you with your cleanup…. you can just drag the turbo and put it in the back of something, put it in the front and loader on another waggon or on some sort of skid steer.

I took the cutting edge plate off the bucket and built one with short forks on it (6 inches long) to help break up the silage/haylage. It works best in the winter. Weld the 1/2 inch spikes on a cutting bar and then bolt up like the original cutter blade. Just make scooping up the feed easier, just like a pitch fork vs a scoop shovel 😊

  • @aaronbeisch4707

As for oatlage, we usually try to cut it while it's in the milk stage, but that might be our region.
In the 80s and early 90s, some of the oatlage was put on top of the haylage in the silo for the milk cows.
Yes, we have put plain oatlage in bags, we usually used a bucket and grapple, but thats what we had. My uncles preferred an oats peas mix for their Holsteins if they were going to chop.
On the one hand, the oatlage is no different than the corn, the higher the grain content, the better the feed. One beef calf feeder said it well by saying, chop the good corn otherwise I'll have to add more ground corn to the ration later. I guess it all depends on where you want your production levels at. Which comes with a grain of salt, like buying extra pounds of milk, then as you know the extra pounds of milk production might mean a couple extra open cows at your monthly herd health check.

Great video Kip! I aiways fed oatlage from new seedins to my dairy herd, great feed and the cows loved it. Whenever my mixer wagon would break down and I had to feed with a forage wagon i would load the wagon a evenly as possible, then rum it off on a cement pad and reload it to insure a better mix An extra step but it worked good. Keep the videos coming!!

We have chopped just straight oats. Everything we chop is piled. I wanna say it was 11-13% protein when it tested out. It works good for beef cows but I’m guessing probably not so much for milking cows. Everything we feed is through a tmr mixer

You asked about oats. When still farming we mixed oats with our Haysliage and it worked good for us. Our herd did well on it. You shouldn’t have any issues with it Kip.
You hay silage bags are looking good I think. You have them nice and fat and tight. That is the way you want them. Works good that way.
    Like your bag setup.

Hey Kip my experience with feeding oatlage is more older heifer or dry cow feed. The nutritional value is not there when oats head out you may be able to blend it with some very good testing haylahe but a test will show you what you got. Keeping them bags full n tight is the answer oxygen is your enemy.

As long as you catch the hole fast, you can patch with bag tape or silage tape and prevent some spoilage. Whoever sells your bags can get you a couple rolls. I used to fight it with baleage. Patch them fast and it'll help.

We eventually just put an electric fence around it and that fixed the small critter problem. But I think theres another trap you should try that we didn't have them. It's called a dog proof paw trap. Works good. Got mine from the local feed mill.

We had a regular bucket on our skid steer and it worked fine, a little tough in the winter since it’s frozen and were loading in to an old barge wagon. You might want to invest into a claw bucket for whatever you use weather it’s a skid loader or back hoe depending how tall your tmr wagon is.

If you stay with bags for the more long term planning, a different bagger would be a big help. There’s not anything wrong with an “AG-Bag” bagger, but we run a Martin Bagger, and it has a hydraulic brake, and we fold the bag end down over itself. No need for cables and the cage at the end. It’s only an 8’ bag, just because that’s what people want, but we can do up to 300’ and I believe you van get them in a 10’ tunnel as well. It’s an auger pack versus a tooth drum, and we feel like it keeps the feed mote intact, and doesn’t mutilate the feed as it goes in.

If you have a good nutritionist, they'll take a sample of each individual product, send them in. Like 1st cutting, 2nd cutting, corn silage, oatlage or however. Then they should get samples from a few mixer wagon batches to see what needs to get adjusted.
What I mean is, sometimes A + B might not always equal C, when you may need to adjust the pounds of product like more silage or less haylage, or use a different vitamin/mineral package or variety number of mineral to most balanced diet. I wouldn't kick the free choice long stem hay to the curb yet. Some cows may need the extra filler
