As soon as I saw both your faces in one thumbnail I raced straight to this video. What a collab! I love videos about how different parts of the industry work. And also hearing other people talk about their jobs... because I’m super nosy. Please do more of these. I say all this like three minutes in. That’s how excited I am about it. Ha. I completely second Jennifer on putting in a little work on researching a culture prior to reading a book that's from another country. I remember reading and loving these two books that heavily featured their cultures (Korean & Latinx) and there was alot of backlash from western readers who had complaints/issues that were about culturally specific things. I was surprised until I realized they were looking at these books from a western perspective without any knowledge of either cultures. Whereas because i'm ethnically Latina who is studying the Korean language and have looked into Korean history and culture as an extension of my interest in the language, I was able to step back from my american/western mindset and view these books from their respective cultures and understand why certain elements were the way they are and what these books were trying to do. Ever since then, it's made me realize how important it is to do a little research beforehand and it's honestly made the biggest difference in my reading.
Anyways, this was amazing. You two brought up alot of good points and I just loved seeing a video with two of my favorites! (So yes, please do another video together!) ❤
I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say people who work in books are boring. My question about foreign rights was riveting.
Y'all are so great. I would love to see more things like this. As someone entering a bookish career that is not publishing, it is interesting to hear what your jobs and experiences have been like!

I actually AM interested in getting into publishing. Which would not be an easy thing to do. So I'm all ears for this. And being a booknerd, and listening to things like Bookriot, I've discovered I have a huge interest in hearing about what goes into keeping books coming out.
Ohmigosh. I assumed this is more or less what foreign rights agent is. But hearing you describe it, for some reason I am geeking out. You help bring books to the world. That is so cool!

The suppressed deckled edges rant was awesome. So great you will be in Frankfurt. 5 pm pretty much everybody starts drinking at the fair., so yes you will be partying I assume :D I'll recommend hall 4.1 where the independent publishers are but mostly because I also work in that hall. :D
I love this! South Africa's literary scene is dire, both as a writer and reader. People working to get international titles to trickle down to SA are doing the Lord's work.🤣And not just the bestsellers that are going to make it here anyway. I squeal with excitement to see Booker titles here, Women's Prize for Fiction books: it's amazing. I seldom get to see them in person (outside of Booktube.)
Yeah. Those of us on Booktube are more plugged in than we realise. It's strange to realise what a lovely reading bubble we have here.
I love what you said about publishing not being forward thinking. Yes. I've seen that first hand. It's so retrospective, which ultimately keeps storytelling stuck in the past. We're people who acknowledge the importance of storytelling, and the inherent power involved with who gets to tell stories, so we take this stuff seriously. It can be pretty frustrating sometimes to see how backward looking publishing is. I don't know what change I'll be able to make in my lifetime, but hopefully it will be something. Publishing has a long way to go, but I know some great writers. And as you said, publishing doesn't make money. From my understanding, most people enter it out of the love of books because it's certainly not lucrative. Hopefully that will contribute towards putting out the best books possible.

No into publishing, but I’m a social work student in my senior year and this is exciting to see my two of my favorite UA-camrs in the same video :)
How to stand out and get your foot in the door seems to be the same in most industries. You either need to know someone on the inside or be able to show that you are willing to do the grunt work. I am in the process of changing careers from retail management into the non-profit sector. I ended up doing what I now found out is called a "minternship" or mid-career internship. On top of working my full time job, I started volunteering for a small non-profit in my area. I think this is the only reason why I was able to get in the door to interviews with non-profits and the experience and references I gained is probably the reason why I was able to get a job at an amazing non-profit. Before this, I was struggling to get interviews. I had been pigeonholed due to my years spent on a very linear career path within one industry. To get out of that, I had to think outside the mentality of "just keep at it and something will come up".
Regarding drinking/partying: In London I find there’s a huge drinking culture. It felt like every week we were having drinks in the kitchen to celebrate something or other and we had like 3 different Christmas parties/lunches!
Have fun at Frankfurt, I had an absolute blast when I went last year!

Really loved your answer to the mind-frame of reading translated works, definitely something I've seen/heard from many readers and experienced myself in the past. It's so important to challenge the idea of the English-speaking countries (particularly UK/US) as the standard to all literature and stories. This was so great!

Thanks for this video and that was a great point about how to appreciate translated books. I think at first, I was reading foreign books with Americentric perspective but reading more books from other countries and cultures has changed me so I read differently now as well. Hashtag growth!
Thanks ! I am in France so I was interested about your job in Foreign Rights and I also know about Francfort’s fair because one of my favorite publishers go there to find Eastern European authors. Anyway I didn’t know Matthew so I am going to check his channel out. I realized how much I miss seeing your smile 😊 and I hope you can make more videos. I wish you could talk more about Slavic authors as well. Also, it’s only because I have been following English speaking booktubers that I have found out about the tiny amount of books translated into English. Like all the translated readathons for instance - I have read so many translated books from all over the world, I think in Europe it’s a common thing. No big deal. I am still thinking about the Sapiens story too .. great interview ! Merci 😊

You are a delightful duo. And the answers are fascinating. I was grinning hard at the Christmas party part - I'm a translator and our department is exactly the same. A bunch of hermits averse to human contact xD Except for sarcastic comments within our own teams.

Lovely video! Watched with interest as I'm a marketing manager at a large publisher and I think with the first question it's as Jen said. You have to be interested in the industry, not just like books. I also think that perhaps people get hired outside of publishing because of transferable skills, if you've worked before some of those skills combined with your passion make you a good candidate.
Programs that publishers put on for diversity like you said is good but doesn't address the real problem. Hiring diversity into assistant levels and not where the huge decisions are made means nothing changes.
Enjoy your first fair Jen! I went to London book fair this year but as a student, it was so good to experience it.
Interesting that you say the publishing scene isn't party heavy, definitely the assumption of the London publishing scene, but I can't confirm.

Also, you'd be surprised how many librarians don't read all that much (I'm a librarian, but I read heavily).
When I go to the library to check out books, I like to engage the librarian in conversation. Sometimes, we have discourse and the librarian shares perspective that is probably only possible from someone who works around books. And then sometimes, I am disappointed that the person at the checkout counter is not an avid reader. But I guess the question is what makes a librarian? Not just a person who works in the library, right?
