  • Well... I guess I bought a plane. I have always wanted a 701; it just seems like as close as you can get to a perfect plane. It's all metal so it can be stored outside if need be, it has doors and heat for for the cold months when you don't want to dress for an open cockpit, it goes fast enough to actually go somewhere (as long as it's not TOO far away) and it's still really good at off-field operations.
    This one isn't perfect... yet. But once I get done with it it'll be pretty close I think. Stay tuned and follow along as I fly it, mod it, and have some adventures with it. :-)

    We’re building an 801. That aileron split you observe is the clever way Zenith got a “dihedral” effect into a wing that is otherwise straight, flat, and easy to build. 👍 Nice plane!!

    Congrats Matt! Good Looking Bird ... I'm also a 701 Owner (3rd Owner built in 1991 here in Ontario) original engine was an 80hp Rotax which I've swapped out for an almost new 100hp Rotax ... she gets up in a hurry and cruises at 85-90 mph. Enjoy!

    Congratulations on the CH701! I heard that some builders in South America added 16 inches of wingspan on each wing and left the slats off. That gave them the same performance of having slats plus more speed and the airplane flew with the nose at a lower attitude. Looking fwd to warmer weather so you can film with the wheels on the 701.

    Very nice. For a transponder, give serious consideration to the UAvionics Tail Beacon. It's Mode S and ADS-B that will meet Canadian requirements in the future.. You would have to put the UAvionics EFIS, or something like the GRT SportEX EFIS to control it. But Hey, that's all for the future. Drop me a line if you have questions on the SportEX. I've installed 2 of them now. Sweet new toy, look forward to seeing your new adventures in it. Cheers from Winnipeg.

    If I remember right when I built one years ago the split in the ailerons is how they set the washout of the wing.The wing is built on a flat surface instead of having to build it with one outer corner up a certain amount to introduce washout so at the split there is a certain measurement for the offset to make the washout.

    • @mmatt
      @mmatt  Рік тому

      That's my current understanding of it too but I'm still trying to wrap my head around the physics of it. lol
      I get it... but then the way I "get it" contradicts what I understand about flaps. Once I get it figured out, I plan to do a video on how it works.

    The flaperon type is Junkers. Nice plane !

  • @Halli50
    @Halli50 Рік тому

    I believe Junkers of Germany pioneered this type of flaperons in the inter-war years, the best-known version being the Junkers JU52. I have always heard them referred to as Junkers-type ailerons. The infamous Stuka JU87 dive bomber also had them.
    Like all large-wing, low wing-load aircraft this is a "rudder airplane", i.e. the rudder is very effective and has similar or even more roll authority than the ailerons - side-slipping these things is interesting and very effective. It changes glide ratio into that of a grand piano - with the lid closed! This takes some getting used to and is great - once you get used to it. With it's light weight, once you return to coordinated flight, the sink stops INSTANTLY. Very handy for landing over obstacles, but be sure to practice a LOT at altitude before you start slipping to within 10-20 feet off the ground.
    Whenever you want to bank quickly, use some accompanying rudder. The roll rate (usually rather lackluster on this type of aircraft) becomes rather impressive.
    PS. If you want to become familiar with the minimum-speed attitude and behavior of your aircraft in ground effect, do some ultra-slow passes over the runway at 1-2 feet, struggling to keep it just airborne. You WILL touch down now and then, but you will become thoroughly familiar with this part of the flight envelope.

    Sweet new plane! Nicely done and humble too!👍 Look up some Arkanstol video's if you like stol stuff that's not in a flat, no obstacles environment! You wouldn't believe how capable stock airframes are! The Helio Courier is sitting back in time looking at the cool kid's and thinking wow, I did all this stol stuff WAY better, with less power, and more weight..back in 1949! I'm not comparing that to this. Only pointing out an epic plane.
    VG's vs Leading edge slat's is simple. "Whatever makes you feel good" or as you say "whichever you like better!"
    People are arguing about thing's that very few pilot's have the skill to even get to the limit where vg's and slats really matter. It's like the active aero on these hypercar's that the owner's never take to the track and use.
    Look up "Speedy does the log run" 40 degree 600ft air america bluff side!

Why don't you call them "Full flying ailerons"? Irregardlessly, you're right they're not the Friese type ailerons that protrude below the wing when deflected upwards to counteract adverse yaw. Irregardlessly dropped, FTW!

    • @mmatt
      @mmatt  Рік тому

      It all depends on the light. In direct sunlight, it's no problem at all. But on an overcast day, it's very much like a glassy water landing for seaplane pilots. You just set up for a minimum sink rate and wait until you hit the ground.

    2:58 Notice the angle of attack of the inboard portion of flaperon is greater than the outboard section. This design feature will mean the inboard portion will stall first, thus giving a warning, before the aileron portion has stalled.

      Thank you! I guess it's an easier way of adding washout to an all metal wing.

    Transitioning from the Beaver to the 701 looks like it was seamless as your landings look awesome. How well does the heater work?

      Very well. The doors have some gaps that need closing but once that is done, it'll be very warm inside.

    Looking nice! My 701 has alot of similarities. I don't think you should bother with a transponder since it's registered has a Bula, you can't enter controlled airspaces anyway....

      With prior permission, you can.
      CAR 602.29(2)(b) states:
      "A person may operate a hang glider or an ultra-light aeroplane in controlled airspace" ... " within a control zone of a controlled airport where the person has obtained an air traffic control clearance by two-way radio voice communication from the air traffic control unit of the airport"

    Didn't even know there was a 701 down here at Weyman let alone one for sale. I was by there yesterday but no-one was around and I didn't notice an empty hanger. Guess I better start paying better attention, I haven't been there this winter and seems any news I get comes from the breakfasts at Woodstock. When They starting up again?
