If you really want to learn how to swear like the British, just catch a bus to Liverpool and ask the 2 teenage girls to stop smoking. I've heard allot of swearing in my time, but nothing will ever compare to the 30 minutes of those two!

I can attest as I was a waitress for a time.
working for tips would never work in the UK as you can't make people like you and any attempt to do so would likely make you just annoying. I went to the USA for a holiday and the waiting staff aren't able to just leave you alone to eat in peace.
+smegskull I want to go to the US at some point but tipping is something that bothers me. I've never tipped someone unless asked if I would like to as its not a common thing in England as we get reasonable wages. I have only ever paid for what I eat/buy and never felt it was my place to pay the wages of staff. Half the time I can only just about afford the food I buy never mind giving someone a worthy tip. I'm all for complimenting a staff members great service but I just feel tipping is a bit too much at times. So I think I'll only ever do it if I'm feeling generous and can afford it. Or service was great. Though as long as people understand its just something I'm not used to rather than I'm a horrible person.

I never hear any of the words used in this video, with the exception of bloody hell, which my grandfather still says. Who coincidentally was born around the time they last used many of the other phrases above.
cdvdtz I haven't heard it used in a while. Local slang changes pretty rapidly in London. I tend to head phrases like Sloshed or Blotto and occasionally Wasted.

Tootsie Wootsie I would have to respectfully disagree with the Harry Potter part of that.. I personally think it happened far before Harry Potter was a thing. Keep in mind the U.S. was originally colonized by the British, so at least the older words have been here from the start. I would pin its resurgence in popularity on one of two things. The first, and in my opinion less likely, being WWI and WWII. The second, and somewhat more plausible, being the "British Invasion".
This just makes me proud to be British 😂

Great Britain is Scotland, England and Wales. The UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. But each country and each region has their own culture and there are lots of different regional accents. That's why using the word "British" is a bit misleading.

I don't know if it's a british word, but a friend I skype with who lives in britain says 'numpty' and I love that word. Get her mad while playing a game and you're likely to be called a numpty.

Ashlee Bee Numpty isn't a swear word. It's more an affectionate word used instead of idiot or something similar. Numpty isn't a nasty word in Britain unless you are very very easily offended. You wouldn't necessarily use the word numpty to be nasty to someone because it isn't a very nasty word. Hope you can understand what I'm trying to say :)

One of my Oxford Dons, who was a linguist, told me "bloody" was derived from the affirmation -- "by my lady," (i.e., swearing upon the name of the Virgin Mary), which in Elizabethan times was pronounced "bee ma laaddy." So another theory in the mix.
Another Shakespearean oath. It's more likely contraction of By Our Lady.
The Irish, on the other hand, are next level.

Blimey, comes from the expression , " May God blind me ". Meaning if I'm not telling the truth may God strike me blind , and has been paraphrased over time .
Now that I have a toddler learning to talk, these should be great alternatives to American swears.

My favorite swear words are a lot stronger like the F and C words as well as their Welsh translation. It sounds so poetic when a sentence consists of nearly half swear words and still manages to convey a clear and coherent meaning.

Being from the US and visiting a cousin in the UK, while he was driving I kept hearing him say "Pratt!" under his breath. When we got to our destination, I told other relatives arriving in a separate car that I learned a new word, said it quite loudly, and was rewarded with pained silence and averted looks.
It's actually "prat". (Pratt is quite a common surname in England). It used to be almost taboo, meaning a lady's rude bits, but is now much weaker and widespread, though not polite. There is "pratting around" = aimless activity, the same as "faffing around".

As a kid in boarding school we were told that Bloody was a shortened form of By Our Lady - (It was a catholic school after all) becoming a type of curse word when shortened and used more n more as an expletive.

There's also "Ruddy" as a euphemism for "Bloody". Curiously with one of nevil Shute's first novels his publishers wanted to accept the Ms, but would not print the B-word, so he simply said "Change them all to 'ruddy'".

Sod as an insult is probably a shortening of sodomite. No way to be sure (that I'm aware of) but a quick google of dictionary meanings and etymology sites do mention sodomite as the most likely origin.

We germans use a lot of "ü"'s but not in "blutig". You can say "blaublütig" for "blue-blooded" and maybe it's an older form... but in general it's "blutig". Anyway I like video.

I do however say fudge, because it sounds similar to a swear word, and sugar instead of actually swearing. I also say beep, because if things like tv shows can beep out swears then why shouldn't I.
