    Tech diver here who has worked on quite a few survey/recovery projects. The professional companies I worked for all used Higain omnidirectional antennae even when using a drone 50 metres away. I was told it was amazing how much a swell of half a metre can affect the signal. Secondly, can you not print a housing that can be slung between the floats but 100% under the surface? That rectangular block could house your sub. As it is in the water, your sub should be able to be deployed free using thrusters. Upon return, the cable reel takes up the c\slack and the sub using thrusters again re-enters its housing block to return with the boat. The stress on the fibre cable put on it by towing puts your sub in danger of being lost if it snaps. The currents underwater can get up to 7-10 knots. Add that speed to the directional pull of the boat can put (boat speed+underwater current = total stress), on your fibre line.

    • @ilya_k392
      @ilya_k392 7 місяців тому +5

      I would even switch to 915mhz version to have better range so close to ground. And I would try to analyze the pins from the plug of the sonar sensor, and just try to mirror it over 4g\5g internet to the ground station head unit (but that will be quit difficult).

    • @ZappelFly
      @ZappelFly 7 місяців тому +7

      I was thinking exactly the same, when i saw the radio. With ELRS you can have a range of many kilometers at best. Maybe you could also do the videosignal via some drone protocol by simply filming the screen of the onboard Hummingbird with a drone camera. That would probably also save you some energy.

    • @JayReding
      @JayReding 7 місяців тому +2

      That would definitely help. Raising the antenna as much as possible would also help - the water is going to tend to reflect and scatter RF signals which can be very annoying to spread-spectrum systems. ELRS also has a 2.4gHz/915mHz combo option now that would be really nice for a use case like this.

    Amazing video! Brief note about the wreck
    The remains of the IL2 in the bottom of the water are the metal components of the plane, basically the main fuselage and the roots of the wings. The wings and tail were made of wood, so they disappeared by degradation and time.
    There is a wonderful scale model made by Diego Quijano in 1/48 of an IL2 showing its materials, look at it, and you will see how the submerged remains of the aircraft fit with the original metal structure of the plane.

  • @dennisash7221
    @dennisash7221 7 місяців тому +21

    Cool video. The problem you have with the waves is mainly due to the fact that you have a very short length of the boat making very unstable, there are two solutions to reduce the bounce of the boat, 1. make it longer, a lot longer 20 to 30 ft which would help stabilize but that will be a huge boat. The other way is to build the boat with SWATH technology hulls, if you can get the motors on a kind of pontoon that operates about 1m under the surface of the water you can have a super sable platform to mount the sonar onto. The other solution is to make a towable drone that operates at about 1m below the surface and mount the transducer onto that to maintain its stability. your image will be much smoother.
    This could have some far reaching implications for SAR in bodies of water, this is an awesome project.

    • @Sailing360
      @Sailing360 4 місяці тому

      they COULD cheat and make the transducer (sonar head) that already sit on a stick.. add two gimbal servos to keep it mostly level at all times.. COULD add yaw as well to compensatete for boat being turned by waves during the search, simply do absolute stability on pitch and roll.. and dampened follow on yaw, so if you turn the boat, in a few seconds it will follow the boats new heading, but won't be tossed off by a abrupt yaw moment.. its a hack, but old-fashioned droned gimbals used servos and we flew 5-8pound cameras.. with servo stability - the tech is pretty off the shelf.

    For the future, a good option for long range wireless communication might be LoRaWAN
    it's specifically designed to be able to transmit and receive from ridiculous distances and very low powers. LoRaWAN specifically is designed to host a wifi network across the LoRa protocol, which would be perfect for your router issues. LoRa can easily span over a kilometer without directed antennae, and with them, I believe the range is ~8 km

    • @bastienx8
      @bastienx8 7 місяців тому +2

    what about using one of those GPS trolling motors with spot lock. They keep much bigger boats in place than yours.

      Since the water is basically radio opaque, mount your antennas on fiberglass poles (driveway markers) sticking up above the boat. First rule of ham radio...good antennas, mounted as high as is practical. On both the boat and the ground station.

    Is it possible to enclosed the sonar head unit and transducer in the CPS? This would reduce wave distortion. The only problem would be data connectivity, but you could remove an entire craft from the equation...

    A cool idea for a similar project: make an autonomous land vehicle with a metal detector that would mark targets with paint or shoot a flag like one used for underground survey or shoot a stick into ground. To find loat treasure or land mines etc in large fields

    This could be used by people like Adventures With Purpose to find vehicles sitting in local lakes. Using it with Starlink would improve speeds substantially and keep it mobile.
