    So sad because i'll never be a ballerina... I started ballet at 4 but i didnt get a lot of technique until i was 14 and now i'm almost 17. I don't dance really bad, but i'm not as good as 17 yo ballerinas. Also, my body isn't a ballerina body at all... Soletimes i think about it and i tell myself that i could be a modern dancer, but i think i'm not strong enough mentally to be a dancer at all. The thing is, next year i will have to choose in what sector i would like to have a job : but nothing pleases me enough to think about studies etc. And then i re -think about how i can't be a dancer. Its a fucking vicious circle, and i'm lost because i don't like anything. Sorry for exposing my life, i needed to write it somewhere 😊 maybe in my next life ill be a ballerina

      alien soup maybe you could work as a physical therapist for a company or play in the orchestra or do something where you can still be around ballet all the time? And don't stop pursuing it even if you're unable to go professional you can still enjoy dance recreationally!!

      alien soup if you love dance that much, but don't think you are very good at it, you could try teaching at a YMCA or small studio. I am a 12 year old ballet dancer who started pointe later then everyone else and have learned so much more and am even more advanced then some of the other girls because I watched their flaws and made sure not to do them. If you love dance that much, you could even take an adult class to get your "daily dose of dance!"

    The mental part is SO important! I can do 4-5 on demi-pointe, but as of right now, I don't do them en pointe at all. I'm just getting back to dance after illness, and for now I'm just doing releves, echappes and such by the barre (also know as my kitchen table) to strengthen. I'm not going to attempt a pirouette until I feel like I have the strength. I know that I might be able to do them now, but because I don't trust my muscles, I know I won't make it.

  • @lily.renneker2503

    Hi Katy! Today was my first day at my summer intensive and they had us do pirouettes in the center on pointe and I have never done them even at the barre. But, since I watched this a couple weeks before, I remembered what you said about pushing off and going straight up, helped me get single. And I got it right away! I was super happy!

    Just saw this today and great timing. I'm performing tonight and tomorrow in a student recital and I have two variations and one demo en pointe and in each one I have to do 2-3 single pirouettes from 4th. I can manage it 80% of the time but sometimes I get really nervous (which doesn't help at all) or feel like I won't be able to get up there. I really liked and will work on your tips and just hearing this makes me feel a lot better. Your turns from 5th video helped sooo much (too much, I did a perfect 16 count phrase once and so my teacher put it in the demo (eek!! That has like a 60% success rate lol) so I will definitely make sure I'm "in the toe" for tonight, I think that will help me mentally. You're right it's all mental, my teacher tells us all the time since we all can do doubles or triples on demi lol. But a single pirouette!? Oh my goodness throw the last 10yrs out the window LMAO

    once you have have strong feet, get over your box, and are able to hold a passé on point for at least a couple seconds then all you need to do is just go for it. don’t think about it too much. start with holds. then do half turns. and then you just got to be brave and do a single. i swear it’s not as hard as it looks. the first time i did a turn on pointe the rest of my class could already do them and i was so scared to do it. my scary russian 😭😂 ballet was telling me to try it and the whole class was staring at me and so i kinda just had to do one. then i did it and i was surprised about how easy it was. you just have to make sure you can easily get up on a passé from fourth position!! those are my tips, hope they help!!

      My teacher says if you don't fall, you're not trying hard enough! In ballet class/rehearsals, it's okay to fall! So if you end up falling out, don't be ashamed! I'm just starting pirouettes too

  • @edwicec07

    You're totally right, turning is almost all about your mental approach! That's the reason why I can't do more than one pirouette and a half and I can't get my doubles: I'm so mentally blocked, I'm scared! Thank your for this video, I hope it'll help me :)

    • @amypreddy235
      @amypreddy235 8 років тому +7

      Think of the muscles under your glutes, some people call them the turn out muscles. By using them it keeps you foot in close to your body as you put it down in to your finish. Also keep your back up, don't collapse in the back and core as you come down, keep strong and held.

    • @arabellat5133
      @arabellat5133 8 років тому +1

      Also, make sure you have control over the turnout of your standing leg. Don't let it go too much.

    Love the comment about feeling flat through the pelvis and knee. What about dealing with not ideal turnout in the hips? Are you saying that we can go past our natural turnout in the hips to maintain correct posture with the turn? I teach it this way as well, but it is nice to get some validation by the likes of you. So encouraging to hear/see this!

    • @madelinekiesel7740

      Madeline Kiesel little padding I've heard of but none I've never seen people go without it I always heard that I should never do it. Especially after that one girl did and it ended up being really bad

    • @madelinekiesel7740
      @madelinekiesel7740 7 років тому

    • @liobu3097
      @liobu3097 6 років тому

      Yea Yea
      Other ballerinas prefer it with light lambs wool’s or light padding. Some of them have extremely strong feet and in ballet, you use those equipment only if you feel comfortable with them. My grandma told me she used light lamb’s wool when she was in her young years dancing ballet, she also told me the pointe shoes now look very different

    I love everything you mentioned, thank you! Your shoes also look lovely in this video. Thanks to your insight, I've found that bloch eurostretches work for me! They've helped me work my best for pirouettes an everything, especially while working on challenging ballets.

    I can only do a single en pointe because I'm so afraid of injury. How do I now when I can do more than just a single? I really don't want to risk it.

      Just go for it! Worst you could do is hurt your ankle. Or most likely, fall on the floor. You just have to trust your technique, and try your hardest!

      Kirstyn Timberlake I had the exact same problem when I first got on pointe. I could do perfect triples on flat but on pointe I was so scared. My teacher told me over and over I have to keep trying and take chances. I kept on practicing even though I was scared and over time I realized that u just have to go for it and being scared makes everything harder. Now I can do triples en pointe and I'm not scared. You just have to go for it and keep practicing.

      Dance Rocks where would you recommend practicing? I have carpeted floors at home, and my studio doesn't really like it when we stay after class to work on stuff because there are other classes

      a name for practicing after class or at home, maybe try to arrange a private lesson with your teacher. I’ve done this and it’s helped me get to a double en pointe!

      Rose Chamberlin yes, well where would I practice at home? But private lessons are a good idea and I think that I’ll ask my parents if I may. Thank you!

    Also do you have a video about breaking into pointe shoes, because my second pair of pointe shoes are really hard to break in.

    I've been on pointe for 3 years this year and never had to do turns (we have practiced but never had one in a dance) - and after watching this video it's helped me mentally to know what I'm doing!!
    Do you have hyper-extend legs?? I do and was wondering if you have any tips??

    Thanks so much for these videos! I'm 13 and really want to improve as much as I can! One thing I'm struggling with is not keeping my weight balanced or on the ball of my foot and all, I'm really trying to work on it as I feel if I master that I can grow more as a dancer, I also have these troubles due to my hyper extension which I know you made a video on! If you have any tricks let me know! Thank you so much!

    so, this could be different methods of training, (i'm vaganova trained) but i'm noticing you kind of 'roll up' onto your pointe shoe rather than the tiny "hop" feeling. i was always taught to 'hop' and suck in the leg, and bring it under you, specifically en pointe (so your toes replace the heel on the floor) rather than transfer your weight out to the toes. do you think one way or the other could be a help (or hindrance) on getting multiple pirouettes en pointe? i have consistent doubles but pretty flukey with triples :\

    • @aname1857
      @aname1857 7 років тому +2

      Salty Sugar Plum it all depends on the dancer, I personally find the way where you scoop it up under yourself easier because I'm more on my leg, but my studio taught me to releve

    • @meowool
      @meowool 6 років тому

      Vaganova is known for doing the little hop thing on pointe while other styles (like balanchine) roll up.

    • @alinaj1707
      @alinaj1707 6 років тому

      Salty Sugar Plum Yeah, at my old studio, it was Vaganova and then we had one teacher who was RAD trained. We always did a little snatch up to pointe in the center, not always at the barre (example, during fondues we wouldn't do a hop/snatch because it disrupts the slow melty movement). Now, I am at a Balanchine studio and they don't really specify about it too much for turns, but they do mention rolling up. At first, rolling up for a pirouette felt really awkward, but it actually ended up a lot better than how I would do it when I snatched up to pointe. For me, snatching up to pointe is too sudden and makes me really nervous and anxious. When I roll up, it feels smoother and it makes me less scared to do the turn.
