Playing the chaconne on a solitary unaccompanied violin is "heroic", but it really doesn't do it justice! (And I'm saying this as a violinist.) An ensemble like this brings out the full symphonic sonority of the more dramatic sections, and all the "hidden" melodies a violinist would (try to) imply with careful control of bow speed, pressure, and vibrato can be explicitly played. Beautiful work!
I am pretty confident if Bach was brought back from the dead and listen to this, it would bring tears of joy to his eyes. Many of the big name violinists do not understand this piece as well as these saxophonists do. Absolutely amazing transcription and performance. Thanks for sharing.
Dr. Fennell would be So pleased with this sound, I'm positive. I played Bari sax under his direction at NC School of the Arts in a summer program. So last century, but there's still a few of us around.
LOL, I thought it was the violinists who voted to keep the saxes out of the orchestra! Guess it wasn't you Thunder. Guess I'll have to then go with my second theory.. It must have been the French!
After this, J S Bach and Adolfo Sax came on stage and gave each other a hand shake. Bach is so well written it sounds perfect on any instrument. These musicians however bring another level to the music.
What a wonderful demonstration of the power and depth of Bach's eternal music! It can be transcribed to almost any instrument, and something quite new emerges, while remaining faithful to the original score! This particular version was a complete surprise, a real treat! Tky v much.
I was fortunate enough to be around composer Mark Mellits one week who transcribes his music for various ensembles. When the saxes played' 'Groove Machine' he said "God, I love saxophones"... Adolphe Sax was a genius designing his series of horns. No more proof is needed of Sax's vision than this performance. And if you have enough money, you can buy one of his original horns today. The ESP performs Mellits' music in another UA-cam
I never imagined that saxophone could sound as beautiful and powerful as say cello or violin...and here we are. This cracked my heart open and brought me to tears. What a powerful, beautiful, and nuanced performance. Thank you to all of the musicians. You rock!
Among many other things this shows what musicians are capable of when mastering the tonal possibilities of their instruments, an art that thankfully seems to be gaining somewhat of a rebirth possibly or at least more exposure due to youtube and the wonderfully generous folks posting such high quality offerings! This goes towards the re-birth of interest in what I think might be truly "Old-School" playing, from a time before fancy condenser microphones and other high tech sound reinforcement gear - a time when musicians needed to learn the full range of tone, expression, dynamic range and in general how to reach out without technical support (other than what comes from the quality of their instrument itself). For this I'll be eternally grateful!
THANKS ! I put my Bose headphones on my ears and I listened to the music as I was in the concert hall. I reproach to pianists to not understand what they play in the Busoni transcription. Here I have 9 Musiciens, 9 different persons but this harmony ! Thanks ! And thank you to not have played this f****** "tierce picarde" at the end of many transcriptions and play a final minor chord !
Just Wow - an awesome performance and transcription. Gods hand guided Bach when he created this monumental work and hearing it played by different instrument's is truly a joy.
Who would have thought..........? I have listened to this a dozen times and each time, I hear something I did not hear the time before, only Bach could write such a momentous piece, and these musicians performed it perfectly. Congratulations on a performance well done. I have heard Josh Bell play it, Lisitsa play it, Xavier on the organ, and I think I like this performance better than any I have ever heard and have downloaded it and play it often.
Fine job! Especially with 9 musicians playing from memory. I still think the violin is the ultimate instrument for this, and the fact that it cannot actually be played on a violin as written is a commentary from Bach about the ultimate mystery. I would also argue that the ability to play all the notes (by a full orchestra, a computer, whatever) does not equal a fully successful performance. These folks gave it a good shot!
Hurrah! What a wonderful performance! Dear performers I wish you all the best to perform better and better in more and more pieces like this. I like these types of musical ensembles because it gives pleasant and energetic sense. Dear performers! Thank you very much!.
See the comment from Buergi Dunitz above. Bach wrote this for one violin, but it seems to me that the scope of what he imagined could fill a whole symphony orchestra.
Flo Thurneyssen, Ronald Caravan put out a book of many Bach solo works for strings (and one flute piece) including the second partita in d for violin (bvw 1004), all of which transposed for saxophone. He however left out the chaconne from his transposition as he considered it too difficult to be performed solo on a saxophone, as well as impractical if performed with techniques designed to replicate violin rolls as there are so many. I disagree and am working on an arrangement for Bari (sorry) so you can look out for it on muse score in the near future and simply shift it up a half or whole step to fit the bottom of tenor range.
Herbert fawcett yes, but I must say that I find your choice of words photosynthetic and pleonastic, for your asunderment is parabolic of your kinnikinnickian antidaephobic tendency to verisimilitate without proper cabalistic consent. Learn vocabulary bro.
My body is physically incapable of handling the amount of emotion coming from this performance. Amazing.

Curiously enough, one of the best version ever. And i'm a violinist..
Bravo.
exactamente, es como estar escuchando a Heifetz multiplicado

Absolutely wonderful performance and arrangement of the greatest 15 minute composition in music history.

Adolphe Sax is at this time very very pround of his own invention, great work and playing !

Music by Bach with instruments that Bach himself did not know - Thank you for this performance & video!
The performance needs no praise, it speaks plenty well enough on its own. Thank you for giving this its nothing short of a gracious gift.
This is absolute music - Whatever it is played on, it works - if the spirit of JSB is invoked...
I was surprised at my reaction to this beautiful performance. Well done!
I agree that Chaconne is the greatest composition in music history.
This is the best version on UA-cam.
This is breathtaking. I cannot simply describe it.
Das ist einfach wunderschön, zum Heulen schön.

CONGRATS this was beautiful executed. I was not sure how The Chaconne would translate to this. I loved it
I think I'm going to wear out the grooves on this UA-cam video. A stunning performance of this monumental work! Bravi tutti!
This is one of the most brilliant performances of any piece I've ever heard in my life. Thank you so much for posting.

Me emociona hasta las lágrimas. Tenia 6 años cuando escuchaba la chacona una y otra vez interpretado por andres segovia. Bellísima. Felicitaciones
Thank you for playing this and making it available to the world. Your playing is lovely and brings yet another perspective on this timeless piece!
ブラボー!┅こんな編成でやれるんだ、目から鱗!。
This is so beautiful! Congratulations to everyone!
Just Wow - an awesome performance and transcription.

Breathtakingly beautiful.
14:07 was definitely the highlight- that chord was so thick- even the bass and two baris formed some sort of triad I think.
Stunning.
音の重なりが綺麗すぎます!!!😍
This. Is. Beautiful.
BRAVO !!! Spellbinding! Bach would be proud.
What a gorgeous rendition 🙉 👏
I like this transcription, it sounds marvellous
Stunning, one of the best versions I ever heard!
Wow. Just wow. What an incredible performance, and an equally incredible transcription. (Wish there was a piano transcription this good.)

Bravo!!!
Great work
Stupendo.
Bravissimi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely beautiful! Anyway I could get my hands on this chart?
This is beautiful. If you want a rendition equally as gorgeous, check out this partita arranged for Marimba.
it takes 9 saxophones to do the job of one violin 🤯
See the comment from Buergi Dunitz above. Bach wrote this for one violin, but it seems to me that the scope of what he imagined could fill a whole symphony orchestra.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏
日本人いる?
バッハの作品はどんな楽器でも合うね。
まるで最初からその楽器のために作られた曲に聞こえる。バッハの時代にサックスはなかったのに。

@@TiqueO6 Nobody reads the description, I have come to realize! :(
Fucking Bach. Great performance
Вообще духовой оркестр может сыграть ВСЕ! Даже симфонический оркестр не может его заменить его в некоторых вещах.
Is there any universe where I could get the sheet music for this?
brilliant :-) do you know where i can find bwv 1004 score for tenor sax ? :-)

There were more musicians credited than there were performing.
Actually one of them was credited with playing bass and tenor though he only played bass in this video. Great musicianship all around.
Jon Goldman I didn't notice that. Thanks for pointing it out.

Hi, great work, congratulagions! Where can I find this arrangement?
Sounds as if they are trying to find the continuity of organ sound... but the piece was written for ... solo violin !
This feels like an ASMR tho
i see twins and a triplet on the right side
9 саксофонов сыграют что угодно.
En El solo de violin la pieza suena dramatica muy desesperante, con cualquier otro instrumento suena diferente
Beautiful sound, amazing playing...but you can't change the character of the piece entirely.
No.
A very self-c0nscious effort to play an ephemeral piece of music. Strings maybe, but never saxes.
+Herbert fawcett "Ephermeral"? LOL! Best malaprop ever!
Yeah you can't use words just because they look beautiful to you.
